Costar stabs in place of ALPs stabs?
« on: Sat, 13 December 2014, 06:11:43 »
Could I just use costar stabs for my alps keycaps instead of alps stabs? Alps stabs are just a hell of a lot harder to get my hands on and I intend on building an alps keyboard. They're both wire based so it shouldn't be a huge issue should it?

You could certainly try. Only thing that's an issue is that the insert has the MX stem and many Alps inserts are square. But not all.

DK1087XM does it. If you can find keycaps (hint: SP makes some), then it should work fine.

It depends on which keycaps you have.

I have the square type alps inserts on my board, but they're all essentially wire stabs right? Wouldn't the placement and wire shape be the only things I would need to take into consideration?

Costar-style stabilizers aren’t going to work for you then. You should be able to source stabilizer parts from wherever you got the keycaps though, no?

You would have to somehow glue the costar inserts in the right spot on the keycap for them to work. You might also need the costar wire as well.

Why are we not 3d printing costar stab inserts for alps keycaps?  That seems like a no brainer to me since costar stabs are easier to come by than alps stabs (from what I have seen).

I think this should be possible. Are you volunteering to do the 3d-modeling, order some test batches of prints, and iterate until it all works perfectly? :)

I don't own a 3d printer or the required alps caps. :(
sorry.

Definitely don’t use a home 3d printer for this: the results will be garbage.

But Shapeways or similar should work fine.

I was thinking for initial testing, not for final iterations.

Would like to know if you made any progress in this project printing Costar stab inserts for Alps?
