[IC] Kester 44 Rosin Core Solder 63/37 .020
« on: Sun, 03 March 2013, 18:57:38 »
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068IJWC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thought maybe I'd just post this and see what happened, $35 dollars for a spool of solder is quite a lot for one person.

This type of solder is really good for working with PCB's. It is a rosin based solder and is .02 in diameter. This will help a lot when working with Keyboard PCB's. It also helps with not burning the PCBs, so it is great for beginners :p It has really great quality over-all and it would last a looooooong time!

It is an entire pound of solder. Mimic said he has had this spool since October, doing over 40 keyboard builds and has probably only used 1/18 of it.

I am in need of some good solder and maybe I could just buy it and divvy it out to others? I don't know I thought I'd post this to see if anyone else is feeling the same way and before I buy a $35 one pound spool of solder  :D

If anyone is interested (who knows) post here and we could work out a splitting way between how many people are interested?

If you aren't sure whether to join in on this, just look at this guys review and you'll have your decision :))

"0 of 4 people found the following review helpful
3.0 out of 5 stars solder
It is just a spool of solder. What kind of a review does that require?
If you want one then buy it.

Published 1 month ago by Dr. John"

:p

Thanks!

IMHO you should just buy yourself the whole roll.  You never know when you're going to need it.  Also, I highly suggest you go with the Kester 245 instead of the 44.  The 245 is a No-Clean solder, which means you aren't obligated to buy other chemicals to remove the flux residue.

I really can't justify spending $35 dollars on a pound of solder. Do you think that the 245 is just as good as the 44, besides the cleaning factors?

Thanks

Alrighty then, just gonna check on one more type of solder, then we can decide!

Right now its $20 (if we go with 44) or about $15 each(if we go with 245) for each of us jdcarpe, which is much better than $35. But hopefully one or two more people join in and then I'll order it and will ship out to everyone (all four of us :p )

I see that's the exact one I recommended you in PM. I have a 1lb roll of kester 44's in both 0.020" and 0.31". The 0.020" size is just small enough for fine SMD work, and large enough to solder switches quickly. I'm in Cali, so after tax and shipping, a roll was about $45 shipped for me.

There's no point in going for no-clean flux for keyboard related stuff. Mechanical keyboard is just a huge PCB with majority diodes and switches, you're not obligated to clean the flux off.

Mimic said he has had this spool since October, doing over 40 keyboard builds and has probably only used 1/18 of it.

40?  :o Dam that's more that keyboards that I've modded and built combined. At least before the wave of phantoms that will be coming in.

It would be a little more than that to cover shipping from me to you, but not much. Could this stuff be sent in envelopes?

This seems like a good deal and I'm curious about trying different kinds of solder when I start soldering more again.

Awesome, is everyone alright with 3.2 oz per person? I know jdcarpe said 3 or 4 so we'll see, I'm sure he won't mind.

We will call it good with these names:

1) Gupgup
2) jdcarpe
3) CPTBadass
4) LastAndroid
5) Greystroke

I will PM each of you with projected costs, this will include shipping from amazon to me, price of 3.2 oz solder, and price of shipping from me to you. Should be close to $11 or $12 dollars, much less if this can be mailed in an envelope, anyone know?

Would be $9 per person if it could go in an envelope, but I don't know what 3.2 oz of solder looks like :/. If it can't, a small flat rate bubble mailer should be around $3.50 with tracking?

If a mod wants to move this to GB, go ahead haha, not sure if it is worth it or what not

First class it in a #000 or something like you sent my black springs/stems in. You can actually print first class postage via Paypal and it shouldn't be more than $2 each weighing ~4oz.

Blah, I meant to PM this.

Sent out PM's everyone, take that $3.50 and turn it to a $2 if you would. Total should be around $10.40, pretty good!

Sorry Daniel! I should have moved it :/

And not necessarily metalliqaz, for someone that does maybe a couple keyboards a month 3.2 oz of it will last a long time. Plus having a mini group buy for it gets 5 people solder! I'll probably host another once I need more.

Received in the mail today :D

I am amazed at how thin it is! I'll post a couple pictures in a little bit.

Also, would you guys be interested in maybe me wrapping this around some old thread spools to keep nice and tidy? It may increase shipping a little bit, so let me know.

If you have any other preferences at how I wrap/ship to you. Please post here!

Just in an envelope is fine.  Maybe tape it to a card, in a loose coil, so it doesn't end up wadded into a corner of the envelope.  Nothing fancy, it's just solder.   :D

Hey guys! I had a little extra time today so I decided to get it over with and get it ready to ship!

Here is what they will look like shipped:
15920-0

I hope that is okay with everyone. Regardless of the way I did it, it wouldn't have been able to ship in a normal envelope.

I also don't have a Postal scale, so I had to use a kitchen scale :/ I gave everyone a little more than what I thought was 3.2, so that everyone got at least that. Let me know what you think please!

I may have some of my share, let me see how much one keyboard project takes and I'll let you know! I'll be doing one tonight probably.

For all other buyers, I am able to ship out at about 4 PM central time today!

Edit: I actually had some unexpected things to do for an upcoming job for this summer so shipping today will not be able to happen :/
