Vega
Screwless seamless gasket 65% keyboard by Kevinplus and ai03

Latest update: GB begun at TypePlus; prepping a GB thread for this board. Latest update post here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106983.msg2984835#msg2984835)

Refining upon Polaris and its gasket typing feel, acoustics, and aesthetics, Vega takes things one step further with a steel weight, completely screwless exterior, and refined build process.

Tailor-Made Typing Experience

Vega brings the extreme typing comfort and acoustic tuning to the 65% form factor, using 28 custom gaskets to completely isolate the plate from the case.

A precision-cut foam midlayer and dual stack bottom foam layer allows for precise tuning to balance acoustics and typing feel to your exact preference.

The Reference Aesthetic

The clean, sleek, seamless exterior of Vega has no visible exterior screws, which are conveniently hidden under the keycaps for an uninterrupted minimal aesthetic regardless of the viewing angle.

The immense rear-angled weight is made entirely of stainless steel, providing the elegance and heft worthy of being the centerpiece of your desk.

Stress-Free Circuitry

The thin, flex-slotted hotswap PCB comes pre-installed with VIA Configurator compatible firmware, ready for lightning-fast assembly and easy keymap editing without the headaches of drivers and firmware flashing.

A solderable PCB kit is available for those who prefer soldering or non-stock layouts.

Thorough Engineering

The centered USB cutout allows for a neutral cable position fit for any desk, and careful design allows for maximized comfort and acoustics even with a hotswap structure.

Temporary plate retention screws aid the build process while also protecting the plate inside the case during shipping.

That green looks drastically different from the Polaris green, and I like it a lot more. Hopefully the ano comes out looking like that and we don't end up with another E-yellow fiasco.

Will be a separate add-on outside of base cost, just to simplify logistics so Kevinplus doesn't get sent to the hospital from overworking

Nice! Would you consider adding underglow LEDs to the PCB for the PC version?

No PC version this time around; the thin supports for the internal screws would shatter.

It's been nice following along the developments of this, and great to see the IC materialize - it looks great, and I'm definitely in for it. Do we have an idea of when it may go to GB by any chance?

Timeline TBA. Currently still sorting out the last of the details.

Been waiting for this  ;D  Will there be color options for the weight?  I see black and grey with the protos.

Still deciding on this last factor, but currently both Kevinplus and I are leaning towards all black.
Maybe silver weight for black case, but the proto wasn't too spectacular in terms of durability so there'd need to be another finishing method.

Apologize for harping on this but do you have an total cost estimate (including shipping?) I understand this will be more than polaris simply because more material. But an estimate would be great.

Really like the looks of this. If you're not completely locked into the hotswap pcb being the default, I would personally prefer the soldering to be the default or better yet, just be given a choice between the two. Prefer not to pay for a hotswap pcb I don't need.

I guess I kinda get the decision of having a seperate add on kit for non-hs, as it almost doubles as another pcb+plate, but it still feels rather unfortunately gimmicky especially when you offer that sick split spacebar layout.

Would it be possible to only get a pcb and a plate made later on (since you're pretty good about doing making open source consistently, which ty btw)

This looks amazing. Will the hotswap PCB have an option for people to solder their own LEDs in or would that not be possible?

Would you consider supporting a configuration on the solderable PCB which swaps the right shift and the up arrow key?  This would allow me to use a JIS layout (possibly even utilising your Japanese keycaps!), without complicating the board design too much.

Really like the looks of this. If you're not completely locked into the hotswap pcb being the default, I would personally prefer the soldering to be the default or better yet, just be given a choice between the two. Prefer not to pay for a hotswap pcb I don't need.

Same.

+1. Would really prefer a choice of hs package and a solder package rather than having solder as an add on. i can see myself getting both but i can also see myself saving $70-100 if given the choice.

hopefully this isn't another loooong IC like the tkl, seeing you already have a few rounds of proto.

do appreciate the consistent layout of your ICs.

Apologize for harping on this but do you have an total cost estimate (including shipping?) I understand this will be more than polaris simply because more material. But an estimate would be great.

I would highly suggest not counting on shipping being included in stuff like this any time soon. The shipping situation this year is different than ever in the past for more reasons than just covid, but covid is still also a thing.

Everything's going to cost more to ship everywhere until covid is gone, and after it's gone, a lot of things are still going to cost a lot more to ship a lot of places for the foreseeable future due to the new postal agreements, and the inevitable cost increases from the logistics companies since their cheapest competition is charging more.

Some merchants / group buys will continue the practice, but don't count on it being as prevalent.

I think the specifications of this keyboard are impeccable.
The only concern is I maybe have to take long time to choose one color from these options!
I hope additional renders or photos will available in future updates. I'm looking forward the GB will open!

Same here, would love to have the choice to get only the solder package.

ai03 (avoiding the ping for now), the Vega PCB is again flexy, as Polaris, right? And I don’t see a USB daughterboard.

Sorry if you answered this already, if so, please point me at your answer.

Will Vega also have the same behaviour with the USB port flexing against the case, as here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/h7gofy/polaris_owners_usb_port_stress/

Admittedly, in normal use that won’t be a problem.

And further, just for my own education, I’ve been told the USB daughterboard is more to assist layout of the PCB than to safeguard against flex of the PCB / movement of the USB port.

What is your motivation? I guess you’d be the authority on this, since most other designers use your daughterboard!

Great, thanks. So will the Vega have similar movement of the USB port?

<EDIT:> Ah, I see Polaris has USB on one side, Vega has it in the middle. And maybe the USB port is then closer to gasket support than on Polaris as well.

Would you guys mind sharing why this layout is preferable? I'm new to keyboards, but coming from a laptop keyboard, it's nice to be able to use Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn for scrolling through tabs, and a menu key saves moving your hand to the mouse to right-click. Open to discussing it; there aren't many curated layout comparisons with pros/cons that I could find.

Ultimately it's all preference, which is why other layouts exist. I myself like the blocker because it makes it easier to track where your fingers are landing for the arrow keys.

Its preference, people get smaller layouts because they don't use the key or they are happy to use layers. You can get a TKL or 75% instead of 65%, its up to you, there is no 'best'

You can always map Fn+PgUp/PgDn to work as Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn. And Menu can be Fn+M or whatever. The blocker is nice because it looks cleaner (it's less cramped than having three keys there), and it gives you tactile feedback as to where the arrow cluster is.

It's just preference - I've never used RCtrl or the Menu key in my life, so I don't need them. However, you can remap anything to just about anything else (including modifiers such as Ctrl), so it's not like you're only restricted to the physically present keys.

I appreciate a clean look, but the asymmetry is a little weird.  I feel like locating the arrows (and other keys) by muscle memory is much more significant than relying on empty space.  Good point on mapping it as a Fn key; will have to try that.  An extra keystroke is less desirable though; does the software/firmware allow you to map keypresses vs holds differently (i.e. press for menu, hold for Ctrl modifier)?  The menu key is great if you use any right-click functions frequently (e.g. on an image, Menu → Open With ("h") → Adobe Photoshop is a real timesaver).

Yes, of course, any good firmware will allow you to do that (QMK firmware is what's mostly used).

No

Absolutely no

On a more serious note, I chose the 1.5/7U-based layout for four reasons:
- Historical significance of the WKL-based layouts
- Ability to support 3/1/3U split space and 7U on a single hotswap PCB once 3U becomes more common
- Noticeably better reach on the left ctrl position
- A survey taken before IC revealed roughly equal demand for 1.5 and 1.25 based 65% layouts, and plenty of 1.25 based 65% boards already exist

The downside of 7u space is that RAlt/AltGr becomes noticeably more difficult to reach. This is an issue primarily for non-US users that rely heavily on AltGr to input special characters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the hotswap layout with the 7u spacebar has no RAlt/AltGr (only RControl which of course could be re-mapped but you get my point). We ISO users will have to rely on the soldering kit, which allow a 6.25u spacebar along with AltGr.

That's why it would be great if we could get to choose between the hotswap and soldering kits instead of hotswap being the default and having to purchase the soldering kit additionally.

The key to the right of 7u space would be AltGr. Yes, it would be better to not be forced to purchase the hotswap PCB.

Very likely in the future.

Looks really clean. I would like to see non-hotswap standard for flexibility on layouts.
Roughly half of the PCB issues I had to deal with on Polaris were related to soldering errors, and the other half firmware flashing. Vega attempts to resolve these issues for the sake of my sanity when I get flooded by DMs and pings and emails.

The downside of 7u space is that RAlt/AltGr becomes noticeably more difficult to reach. This is an issue primarily for non-US users that rely heavily on AltGr to input special characters.

Maybe in the future, but definitely not now.
I just spent months optimizing Vega for the least logistics headache and best labor conditions for everyone involved in making the board whether factory worker or vendor, so I will not undo such efforts until I or the vendor is financially stable enough to hire more workers and offload sorting work to be less burden on each person.

The key to the right of 7u space would be AltGr. Yes, it would be better to not be forced to purchase the hotswap PCB.

Maybe in the future, but definitely not now.

Roughly half of the PCB issues I had to deal with on Polaris were related to soldering errors, and the other half firmware flashing. Vega attempts to resolve these issues for the sake of my sanity when I get flooded by DMs and pings and emails.

That makes sense, especially considering how popular this board is going to be with 2020 demand and the approachability of 65%. Honestly I'm stoked for the hotswap pcb as I don't have any HS boards for testing/breaking in switches. If I'm able to order a Vega I'll be picking up a second solderable pcb+plate as well.

God, please make it happen! this board looks quite gorgeous.. now with 3u hotswap spacebar and how easy it is to reach that ctrl key, you have just sold it for both me and my son!

Well, yeah. At the very bottom of the initial post there's the supported layout for the default hotswap and then the supported layouts for the solder pcb/plate.

when gb?
No

Interested regardless, but I'd prefer something closer to the DZ65 or TADA68 layout, with 2-3 keys next to the arrows; the blocker seems like wasted space.

Yup being honest it is one of the main reasons that I like this board - hotswap 7u. Nice job AIO3
Title: Re: [IC] Vega - Gasket seamless screwless 65% keyboard
Post by: Domantas on Sun, 12 July 2020, 16:24:34
The downside of 7u space is that RAlt/AltGr becomes noticeably more difficult to reach. This is an issue primarily for non-US users that rely heavily on AltGr to input special characters.

Yeah I use alt gr, but that is whatever since I use it mostly with right hand. Also will there be burgundy color? It is still ic right?

I mean to be fair....I'm not exactly a big fan of the think 2.0 design either. I think the new badge designs stand out a little too much and distract from the rest of the board. That's just my personal opinion though. Clearly plenty of ppl either love it or are into the hype.

No, at least for this round. Possibly in the future, but probably faster to just modify the plate files once released and order one from a factory of choice.

Standoffs will be included for those who plan on swapping switches without board disassembly, but can be built without for those wanting very slightly improved keyfeel.
It is recommended to install at least one of the standoffs for EMI shielding/ESD protection resasons; this will be explained in the build guide.

Oh alright! But the PCB has flex cuts right? In that case we can have our own plates printed say on Ponoko and custom cut them to be half plates.

Are there any estimations on whether this will be an open gb, or limited?

I imagine there are a lot of us that are looking at both boards but would prefer the Vega. But without knowing if it's obtainable will push us towards the Think instead. I understand this isn't your problem. You will have no problem selling these boards whether the Think or any or board exist. Just let us know your intentions even if you can't guarantee it so that we can feel better about our purchase.

I always really don't care if the board is fcfs/raffle OR unlimited. I just choose the board I like more. For example I hate that weight of think 6.5 so I will probably skip it. Vega for me looks much better and I would like it to be unlimited or at least 800 units fcfs or smth (but raffle is a bit more chill though, still it should be very legitimate with vendors showing how they raffle (we should get number ticket or smth))

Mr. Aio3 Would you consider fr4 since it is hotswap?
There is no correlation between fr4 and hotswap; also my name is not aio3

A request of the bottom row split-spacebar for the solderable PCB:
Please make 2.75u + 1.25u + 2.25u also possible for left thumb spacebar pressers (currently only 2.25u + 1.25u + 2.75u)
I only added the single 225/275 split option as a temporary split measure; future round PCBs will likely drop 6.25U-based layouts entirely in favor of 3/1/3 split for a fully 7U-based board once 3U bars become further common.

Can you please let us know if this is intended to be unlimited, FCFS, or a raffle before the Think 6.5v2 goes live?
I am not involved in the development, production, or sales of the Think6.5, nor do I have the intent to compete against it.
I am simply moving this project exactly as I intend as many factors surrounding its development and production see fit; if this causes inconvenience to you, please buy a later round of this, or not buy this at all.

Sorry if it’s been asked already but is a polycarb unit likely for future rounds? Regardless, I’ll be jumping on this haha

Clay333 literally said what I was about to say.

I am just wondering if this will be a raffle or unlimited because if it's a raffle, I am just going to buy the Think 6.5 but I think it goes without saying people would rather buy this board than think 6.5.

Someone gave a joke answer but this is a serious consideration for many people.

I took the dangerous path and will just focus on this board. Too clean and classy. Might as well go all out on it. If I fail to buy then for sure there will be upcoming GB's in the future. If you don't have a current custom keyboard, then go for the Think for the safer route.

It would require a redesign of the board; the existing design wouldn't be structurally sound in PC.

Oof, good to know!

From a learning standpoint, what would likely cause the issues for pc?

Since future rounds are, well, in the future, it would be nice to have a 2.75–1.25–2.25 option for this round, if circumstances allow.

Internal screw points too thin to withstand gasket compression force if done in poly

No
You are free to make your own PCB to handle further compat once the outer dimensions are open sourced

But there are some hotswap keyboards using fr4 plate as far as I know so it should be usable with hotswap. Or you think it won't work well with gasket system?

You are AI03 indeed, sorry, I though its O, not 0.

Since I've designed it very specific to MX, I cannot guarantee that Alps will work due to internals conflicts.
I do have a second generation version of Lunar in the works for an Alps-specific design.

Gorgeous board. I'm going to have to get in on this. Very clean lines throughout.
I'm not normally into the back weight, because you can't see them, so I feel overly ornate back designs are a waste (although I appreciate and admire the design effort), but also feel that plain ones with just plain text are way too boring and uninspired.
Yours hits the nice middle ground for me.

Words from the Chinese GB chat ran by Kevinplus is that it'll be between $300 - $360, and likely to be on the higher side. Still well worth it imo. Polaris was just an outrageously good deal that shouldn't be expected to be the norm.

Nice that they almost announced the price! Though it makes me feel only like considering it, not sought after kind of feel. Cha I already ordered bear65, so I will just wait for polaris type of keyboard situation cheche or go with KEYCULT    because this is like more gasket version of kbd67, which I have. The thing I don't like for such a price (300-360) a bit is rectangle board not having daugtherboard

It's basically a given since (I believe) these will be shipped from China. :(  Already have a fudge factor for shipping in mind so it's not completely devastating seeing shipping be 10-15% of the cost on top of the Vega itself.

What an expensive hobby this can be...

Is this a good time to remind people that the cost of epacket shipping from China to the US went up substantially last month, and you just haven't noticed yet because covid? All those $5 shipping options we used to get are gonna be more expensive when they come back, and rise again ~16% every July through 2025.

Is this a good time to remind people that the cost of epacket shipping from China to the US went up substantially last month, and you just haven't noticed yet because covid? All those $5 shipping options we used to get are gonna be more expensive when they come back, and rise again ~16% every July through 2025.
Oh I noticed alright... crazy shipping prices and even slower delivery.

I've never had the patience or money to join in on a GB for a keyboard that was still in interest check level, but I am 1000% in for this one.

I really like how this board refines features from the polaris.  The seamless design is beautiful but i find that the board may look a bit bland, especially from the top down view  (since it just looks like a typical 67 key 65% keyboard, like a kbd67mkii).  Personally i really like the ai03 logo, maybe adding it into the top right might add some character

I don't understand why every keyboard needs to have some type of logo jammed into the design. Half of them look terrible because Product Design skills != Graphic Design skills. Why run the risk of destroying a design that is praised for being clean and minimalistic?
IMO YMMV

Agreed - Vega is perfect as is. Personally, a large part of my interest in Vega stems from how clean it is; any visible badge or logo on the top would really dampen that.

No thanks.  It's the opposite: instead of making them more "premium", logos cheapen products.  Minimalism is what makes this board attractive.  I absolutely refuse to buy a keyboard with a logo.  Quality design should speak and advertise for itself.

absolutely 100% this.

blocker logos are ugly af and I still don't understand how people could possible like a dumb logo more than an additional key on the top right corner.

I'm a Mech noob, been rocking a Corsair K70 (pre-rgb, Cherry Brown) for years now, which I fully understand doesn't count. About 3 weeks ago I thought I'd see what all the fuss was all about , down the rabbit hole I fell.

Lost track of the Rabbit a while back, but damn these biscuits are great and do like to the look of Vega. Personally I love the minimalism and agree with the above that it benefits from being brandless, a rare treat in 2020. So I guess I've made my choice, I'm in.

Likely start with Glorious Pandas as I'm team tactile for now. Not sure about caps yet, more digging is required. Suggestions as ever, are welcome...

be fast if you want to get one of these boards. very fast. :D

it's extremely hyped now and it will most likely be limited in units available.

and it's also not going to be a crazy deal like the Polaris.
Expect something in the range of $300-400.

Duly noted Elmo, thanks for the advice, do hear these things are gone as soon as they arrive, so I'll be mindful. I'm paying mind here, and on discord. Anything else I should do?

Working on some fallbacks none the less. Say something a little less bespoke, such as an NK65 (when in stock), or the Drop Alt. Which are certainly kinder to the wallet, yet seem to lack a certain elegance, not to mention consideration in comparison.

Says who?

pretty much everyone knows it at this point that it's not going to be unlimited after the disaster that the Polaris GB was.
Unlimited creates way too many problems and it's easier to just run multiple limited rounds of a board because that way you can plan ahead how many units you will have to make.

Either way, really excited for this to go live. :thumb:

Says who?

pretty much everyone knows it at this point that it's not going to be unlimited after the disaster that the Polaris GB was.
Unlimited creates way too many problems and it's easier to just run multiple limited rounds of a board because that way you can plan ahead how many units you will have to make.

Looks like it is

Oh man, we're going to need to fast on this.

Still fresh myself, wonder if this scene is attracting bot interest like the GPUs do? Remember when we thought AI was going to shoot us in the face? Instead it seems determained to drive us all crazy with cold calls, capchas and buying up all our stuff.

The only unlimited groupbuy that ai03 ran so far was the Polaris and that created quite a bit of problems during the production and shipping.

The KBD series boards aren't exactly groupbuys and they weren't run by ai03.
They were just a collaboration / commission design work for KBDfans where ai03 had nothing to do with the groupbuy fulfilment.

All other groupbuys that he ran were limited in-stock or pre-orders (Lunar, Andromea, Orbit-X)

Doesn't mean there won't be a chance for an unlimited GB though, is up to ai03 choices. Messed up one time doesn't mean you can't learn to do it better next time.

I don't know about how big ai03 company or the company that he cooperative is? But there are unlimited GB with large quantities in the past like the Canoe from Percent studio or Space65/Think 6.5 from Gray studio that went (mostly) without any hiccups.

Oh well, we'll just have to see

He's not a company. Nobody in this hobby is.
It's all just hobbyists that like to make stuff.

Keycult for example is just two people.  :blank:

And Percent groupbuys are not unlimited either. They just have a very high limit.

The Polaris was handled by KBDfans which is probably the biggest vendor in this hobby rn with around 20 people.
And they still created a total mess out of it with one delay after another.

Like I said there aren't really any big companies in this hobby that are able to handle mass production of these high end keyboards.
Manufacturing the stuff is not a problem because there are tons of companies in china that do that kinda stuff.
The handling of the quality control and the shipping is the problem. And you just can't handle 1000+ units in a realistic timeframe with just two or three people.
And most hobbyist vendors are just that small. Even Novelkeys which is probably the largest vendor for the US rn is just 4 people.

Why not just wait for more confirmed info rather than guessing or inferring what's going to happen? Be prepared for any situation, don't expect that you're guaranteed to get a Vega but don't expect to have to rush to place an order for one either. Just go with the flow and watch.

I kinda don't agree avoiding proxies (especially in countries with high taxes), because often existence of proxies is determining factor whenever to buy or not buy, when choosing between two similar boards. After spending a lot for taxes, you really start to appretiate runners choosing proxies

Stop talking nonsense. The price of GBs in EU stores is literally USD price converted in EUR+ VAT (21%). Plus adding vendors adds overall cost to the board across all proxies. I would also like an EU store to proxy it, but I have no issues just ordering it from where ever and then just paying the import tax myself.

Only thing more expensive for us would be shipping.

He's not necessarily talking nonsense really, because to be fair it depends on where you're from and what the shipping method is - VAT is 23% where I live and handling fees are through the roof, with other countries having up to like 27%, so for a hobby like keyboards where purchases + shipping can be upward of $600 2 to 6% more along with fees etc can be a decent amount of money. Especially if vendors go with like DHL Express, which basically makes you pay 40-60€ for purchases outside the EU, buying from "local" stores is way cheaper AND easier than importing.

I have paid 100€ in just import fees and VAT for a wrist rest that cost me $80 before, it's not fun, surprises like that do not happen when buying from EU vendors. People have every right to speak up about stuff like that.

Yup, that's how it works. People who didn't pay hundred euro for vat and tax combined won't understand why we love proxies. There are so much more hidden fees than ordering through eu vendor. Vendors always find ways how to cut down cost and both them and us benefit from that. And yes the main problem is when over seas vendors chooses random courier service which ask 40 euro as they are "fullfilling documents"

I don't know how they run things internationally though, might be slightly different since the logistics are more difficult. Sorry for the silence as of late; I oft forget to check GH

Vega was supposed to drop in at mid-October, but due to delays in manufacturing and preparation I'm not 100% sure when it will drop at the moment. Kevin's stated that end of October might be possible if everything goes perfectly, but we all know what happens with ETAs.

All the remaining info will be released in one set (hopefully) once everything is in line.

Excellent quality is always worth the wait! Please don't stress yourself over this, and just let us know when you're ready. Better to have a well-planned product that's great than a rushed one that's not as good :)

Thanks in advanced

They never said what quantity is available as in-stock, but if you don't get in on the in-stock, the GB will be unlimited.

I don't think, that after the Polaris unlimited GB that this will be unlimited at all. I'd assume a high run number but not unlimited.

Vega Final Info Reveal
Let's get straight to the point.

Availability
In-stock: 1000 units, available on November 14, shipping out within a few weeks.
GB: The GB period will open a few weeks after the in-stock units sell out (currently working out the details), and will ship a few months after in typical GB fashion.

Pricing
359USD for in-stock, 329USD for GB.
Yeah, it's a bit higher than I prefer, but a few things added up:
- Steel weight to avoid the brass problems faced during Polaris
- Larger size and mass
- Hotswap sockets
- Currency exchange rates
- Much more complex design
Hopefully I can drop the price in the future as I improve my design skills for efficient production.

Vendor
typeplus.net - Kevinplus's new storefront that focuses on MX keyboards.
So just the Deskeys that everyone knows and trusts, but separating out the MX stuff to a new name so Deskeys can focus on Topre stuff as originally intended.

Purchasing Options
For the pre-order, there will be the following combinations:
- Plate: Poly or alu, single-layout
- PCB: Hotswap
- Additional parts: Soldering kit; includes 1x solderable PCB and universal layout plate in choice of poly or aluminum and necessary parts.

For the group buy, there will be the following options:
- Plate: Poly or alu, single-layout or universal
- PCB: Hotswap or solderable
- Additional parts: Extra PCB kits, extra plate kits

Case Color Options
All weights are matte black PVD unless otherwise stated.
- Grey
- E-White
- Blue
- Green
- Rose Gold
- Black (Silver PVD weight)

So yeah, that covers just about everything left to announce. We'll see how it goes on November 14.

DHL or similar from CN, so I'd assume somewhere around 40USD to the states as long as currency exchange rates don't crash any further.
Couldn't fit in free shipping this time around due to the global situation and its effect on shipping costs.

So I see you purchase the board as hotswap and add-on the soldering kit.  Does the soldering kit include extra foam as well?
Yes

very much interested in this board on aesthetic alone, but could anyone explain the advantages of this board?
With keyboards, the differences are fairly small and diminishing returns kicks in fast.
This specific board uses gaskets and dampers for typing comfort over extended use and controlled acoustics, but whether or not the typing differences will be worth the price difference will be entirely based on how much one values it.

so if the in-stock units are not sold out, the gb will never begin, right?
Yes

So the November 14th date, what time zone is that?
Likely local CN time since typeplus is based there.
Once the date's a bit closer, I'll reveal a launch time.

Great question. As I'm reading this, the solderable PCB will only be available in GB, but GB is contingent on 'in-stock' selling out. And the thought of paying another shipping fee for PCB/Plate in GB after ordering the board from stock is a bit painful...

that makes sense. I am guessing there won't be a sound test video put out before the launch, so would it be a somewhat close approximation for the vega if I referred to polaris sound tests?

I'd hope 1 per person/address for the in-stock sale. Otherwise it's just gonna be flippers snatching up multiple units. Sat75 sold over 1k units today at a higher price point in minutes.

Supposedly Kevinplus sent a unit to both TaehaTypes and Tae, so there is a chance that a build stream or review may appear online prior to sale.
In general, sound is similar sort of character as Polaris, albeit slightly improved.

There will be a "soft limit" to the GB. According to the post in IG and Discord, in-stock orders will have 1000 units and the GB will have higher number. It wasn't specified exactly how many more just more than 1000 units.

Is there any comparison of the Grey in this run to the Space Grey on the Polaris run? I'm trying to figure out if I want to try to match the Polaris and Vega if the colors are similar or if I will go a different color.

that makes sense. I am guessing there won't be a sound test video put out before the launch, so would it be a somewhat close approximation for the vega if I referred to polaris sound tests?

Supposedly Kevinplus sent a unit to both TaehaTypes and Tae, so there is a chance that a build stream or review may appear online prior to sale.
In general, sound is similar sort of character as Polaris, albeit slightly improved.
that would be amazing, thank you so much for the info !

Is there any chance we could get some more pictures of the finalized green color? In the renders it appears very green but in the early color samples picture it appears more muted like a sage green.

I think it's because of intense lighting, if you look at the weight, it's supposed to be matte black, but it's showing grey in the photo, that means the blue is lighter than it should be in the photo.

The "matte black" weight will look more or less like the pictures. I have the polaris and the weight on the back matches the picture above.

Either way, I'm very excited for this board. Kev and ai03 did an amazing job yet again.

Release time announcement

Vega's in-stock international sale batch will be released on November 14th at 12:01 PM EST. We picked the time to be a nice compromise to make it as accessible as possible around the globe; hopefully this won't result in everyone having to wake up super early in the morning or whatnot.

The payment methods available will be Shop Pay (Shopify Pay), Google Pay, and typical regular checkout (entering card info and addr real-time).
Over the next day or so, the storefront will be finalized and published at http://typeplus.net/ (http://typeplus.net/). This will likely be the last reliable announcement from my side regarding the release time, so please set your alarm clocks and convert timezones as necessary.

Best of luck to all who wish to purchase, and if you miss, don't panic for the group buy announcement is right around the corner.

P.S. I am 1000x more active at Discord to the point where I oft forget to post to GH in general. If you wish to get consistent, reliable info, please join my Discord server linked on the first post and obtain the necessary roles for receiving notifications.

I'd say the implementation matters more than the quantity.
With Vega, the number grew due to necessity more than anything else.

And tomorrow begins the hell of sorting through the orders.

Group Buy Details

- It is not unlimited; however, it is with a much higher volume cap than in-stock units. The limit exists so Kevin doesn't collapse from overwork.
- Give us some time before we can get it ready; Kevin is already burnt out from a full week of QCing, and I'm reaching my limits with organization.
- Anything else is TBA. I'll post to my Discord and here (if I can remember to do so) as stuff is decided.

It was just a rough estimate on how it felt, wasn't speaking matter-of-fact lol. I was not aware that the launch was 9:01 pst and not 9:00. Either way, they were sold out in around a minute while Google Pay was stuck a loading.

Been in the hobby for a while but this year is my first year trying to participate in group buys that aren't switches or keycaps.  I don't see how you all stand it lol I waited like 9 months for Ghost Linear switches and that wore my patience!

High demand for everything and little stock, but that's just the way it is now. It was super smooth except for Google Pay was really slow to load which isn't any fault of the guys. Get into the GB mate and wait it out for a while, or pay the reseller price.

Onward.

That sold out as I was entering my phone number.... I was at work sitting on the toilet with my phone waiting and I got in when it said in stock and I was able to put it in my cart and then I got to check out. It went back and said it was a required field. By the time I entered it and clicked checkout it was out of stock..... Guess I'll try for the group buy.

I'm having trouble discerning what the green version of vega actually looks like. a redditor posted recently their green vega https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/jvr8c8/vega_65_nice/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/jvr8c8/vega_65_nice/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
and it looks a more muted, darker green than either the render or the sample posted on typeplus. is the typeplus image truest to the actual color?

From ai03's discord:

Quote
Vega Group Buy Details

Again, let's get straight to the point.

Unit Cap
Yes, one exists. Mainly so that QC and packing doesn't go out of control.
The cap quantity is significantly higher than the quantity we had for in-stock. I'll leave it undisclosed for now, similar to exact quantity not being disclosed for Polaris.

Available Products
- Base kit, 329 USD. Your choice of plate material (Aluminum or Polycarbonate), plate style (Single-layout or Universal), and PCB style (Hotswap or Soldering).
- Extra plates, 29 USD. Your choice of plate material and style.
- Extra PCBs, 39 USD. Your choice of PCB style.

Limits
Up to 2 base kits, 2 extra plates, and 2 extra PCBs per household.
Any purchases for only extra parts without a base kit will be voided, since... well, hard to use keyboard parts without the keyboard itself.

Release Date
11/28 12:01PM US Eastern Time (EST) at typeplus.net.
Note: This time is not for the soldering kit for previous in-stock buyers. Read below for that.

Soldering Kits for In-Stock Buyers
If you were not able to secure a soldering kit during the in-stock phase, we will offer soldering kits during the group buy as well.
To be eligible, you must write your order number for the in-stock base kit when prompted (will be on the product page).
In addition, this is strictly for those who were not able to purchase a soldering kit during the in-stock phase; all who were able to purchase one during the in-stock phase will be ineligible for purchasing additional kits.
Note that these will drop on 11/30 at 12:01PM EST rather than on 11/28 to avoid confusion during the main GB.

And I believe that covers just about everything.
If you'd like to enjoy a build stream prior to the buy, don't forget to tune in to the TaehaTypes channel on Thursday at 10AM US Pacific Time (PST).

Didn't think I'd have to add this, but here we go
- Extra plates, parts, etc.: Definitely want to do it, but not realistic rn when a $5 set of gaskets would carry a $50 shipping cost. Likely after covid clears out, but simply impractical before such.
- ETA is undecided as usual. If I had to take a wild guess which is literally only as good as yours, I'd guess mid 2021.

Not really sure if I should make an official announcement anymore since it's already been relayed... but I guess here goes nothing

Vega Group Buy Details

As per last time, getting straight to the important details.

Unit Cap
Yes, one exists, albeit mainly so that QC and packing doesn't go out of control.
The cap quantity is significantly higher than the in-stock batch. I'll leave it undisclosed for now, similar to exact quantity not being disclosed for Polaris.

Note: This time is not for the soldering kit for previous in-stock buyers. Read below for that.

ETAs
Undecided as usual, mainly due to the possibility of wildly differing quantities ordered during group buy and the different lead times per each range.
If I had to make an uneducated guess based on no proof or evidence, it would be mid-2021.

Replacement Parts
Many people have contacted me regarding the possibility of selling extra gaskets, foam layers, plates, etc. at a later time. I would love to, but in the current global situation it is simply impractical (i.e. 50USD shipping on a 5USD set of gaskets or whatnot). Hopefully will get around to supplying these parts later on.

And I believe that covers just about everything regarding the GB.
If you'd like to enjoy a build stream prior to the buy, don't forget to tune in to the TaehaTypes channel on Thursday at 10AM US Pacific Time (PST).

Note 2: Currently considering offering hotswap parts for this as well, although might not happen due to logistics complications.

Regarding in-stock buyer shipping/tracking info
All units without a soldering kit have been shipped out by the crew responsible for handling shipment.
However, we only received the tracking number list today after a massive delay, so we'll get to work entering those numbers into Shopify as soon as possible.
Units with soldering kits will be shipped as soon as the outer box to bundle the two products arrive.

What are the main differences between the Universal and the Single Layout plates for Vega? Just looking for some guidance in making a decision between them & if it'd be helpful to pick up one of each.

I'd guess that the single layout plate only supports the layout of the default hotswap PCB, and the universal layout supports all of the layouts of the solderable PCB.

ai03 has plate files for the Vega available on their website. The reply above is correct: The universal plate has more cutouts in several parts of the plate to accommodate a wider variety of layouts, whereas the single layout plate only supports one.

I've attached snips of the plate files viewed from a CAD program. The first image is the universal plate, the second is the single layout plate. Notice the universal plate's wide cutouts on the bottom row, which will allow for a variety of bottom row layouts.

A few updates for the group buy:

"Shipping not available" issues:
This was caused by having more than one base kit in the order, which results in combined weight going beyond what we calculated shipping for.
We will refund the shipping cost difference for individually placed orders for multiple base kits; see below for more details.

For combined orders of base kit + extra parts:
The combined shipping is actually calculated properly, whether or not it was done in one purchase. The shipping cost bound to the extra parts is the difference the base kit's shipping cost would go up by when the extra part gets tacked on to the main package.

Regarding CN group buy:
Kevin will likely be setting this up shortly on his Taobao storefront.

Regarding GB period:
If it doesn't sell out by Dec 12 12:01PM EST, GB will close and head into manufacturing phase.

Order edit form
For plate/PCB chances, color changes, address changes, etc.
Please note that color/plate/PCB cannot be edited once actual production begins.
https://forms.gle/NdZpVQtRaSSGUGk96

Shipping cost refund form for those who purchased multiple base kits across separate orders
Again, this does not apply if you only purchased a single base kit with multiple extra parts, since that calculates combined shipping properly.
https://forms.gle/1QkMMC75FLWEeh7W6

ETA:
Currently a vague "mid-2021". Will update once order quantities are finalized and discussed with factories.

In-stock purchases with soldering kits:
They are wrapping up the packaging phase, and are preparing to ship. I apologize for the delay; getting them packed took a lot longer than we expected.

Extra parts in the future
Currently infeasible due to ridiculous intl shipping costs, but would like to at a later time.

GH GB thread:
I need to set this up asap.
