Hey! These icons are indeed bought through thenounproject. Buying icons through there leaves you with no need of giving the designers credit.

This set I'm running specifically to pleasure my taste. I've always been interested in photography. I grew up using a polaroid camera, having all these polaroid films laying around brings back tons of memories. That's why I've decided to dedicate this set to that theme.

CCPL License, but you should thank them anyway. It costs nothing to thank the designers for their icons.  Here I will do it for you:

Gonna be real for a moment, I had to google what this even meant and why things were the way they were to be able to give some actual feedback and not harp on things others have brought up. Not too great of a look, to be fair.

That being said, if the set is about photography or cameras, why does it have to be Japanese? Surely, and I'm just spitballing here, the set could've just been called 'Aperture' without sublegends, and maybe some more thought into presenting it as a more fully fleshed out interest check. For some bit of more constructive criticism, or rather for something neat because photography is a passion, hobby, and past means of making ends meet for me, why not also have a novelty function row with the legends "f/1, f/2" and so on? Think that might be a winner if possible and would tie the set together more than just sublegends and pulled logos for novelties.

Best of luck with this one.

Thanks for that link! I decided to look through Noun Project FAQ and found some pretty interesting paragraphs;

The first is from here
Quote
To use an icon in items for resale (such as Tshirts, phone cases, stickers, mugs), you must purchase a license for each icon using the individual purchase feature and Pay $2.99. Pre-paid credit, NounPro or NounTeam accounts may not be used to download icons for items for resale. One icon license purchased may be used for up to 100 units of product.

For example, if you're selling 500 Tshirts with the same icon design, you will need to purchase 5 icon licenses (500 Tshirts / 100 units per license).

If you're unsure if your items are considered Resale or Commercial use, please read here.

And the second is from here (emphasis mine in the below quote)
Quote
The biggest differentiating factor is that in Items for Resale, the icon creates the substantial value of the product.

For example: if you print a book on iconography and use icons throughout the book, the icons make up the value of the book and therefore it is considered an item for Resale. However, if you use icons to designate the sub-section in the book, or to illustrate an infographic, that is considered Commercial Use. In both cases, the book can be available for sale, the biggest determining factor is what is contributing most to its value.

Now, I am not a lawyer, but I'd argue that the Noun Project icons do create the substantial value of the novelty kit. With 5 icons per kit and two instances of each, some quick mafs ($3 * 5 * 2)/100 tells us that OP should be paying $0.30 per nov kit sold. As long as he does this (which I'm not implying is not already his plan), he is free to use them sans attribution.

Otherwise, cool to see MoDo Dark running

It looks good. Want more novelties like the aforementioned ISO ISO enter, and the f/# stops for the function row maybe as was suggested too. I like the japanese sublegends because Canon and Sony, but you mentioning polaroids would make me think to add in some kind of polaroid touch to it if possible. Love the deskmat design too.

Hey! Thanks for bringing this up, I am fully aware of this and this will be paid for. I've multiple times gotten commission work done for previous projects, and the designer has always been paid by either me or the vendor.

As of now, I've only bought 1x of each icon used from The Noun Project, regarding the sale hasn't started. If I decide to move on with these novelties, and we get sales, profit margins will go towards paying for the icons used!

That being said, I will add credit to the designers of the icons in the IC, so no more people get confused.

I really love the Hiragana sublegends on these dark grey Alphas.
Nice change from black.
Personally I like to see Alice support in base kit.

Something like this would require an entire set of new molds for the F-row and that would make the set a significant bit more expensive.

1. No, and I'm going to be thorough with my response as I feel it did not have the right tone before, nor did it fully convey my thoughts. Fully fleshed out in this day and age to me means more than posting a few renders of kits and listing vendors. Describe to me the idea. I don't want to have to go and Google the name of the kit in order to have some vague understanding of what the idea is. I'm not the designer of the set. While I can piece together it is photography themed based on the novelties, in what aspect does it tie in? Is it a general photography themed set? Does it have to do with a specific Japanese photographer? Was the designer inspired by more monochromatic photography? Tell me the thought process, the story, the reasoning behind why this kit should exist like the 40 other sets that get posted on a daily basis (slight exaggeration, but the point remains). Simply showing me renders with a list of vendors does some weird psychology thing to me. I want to learn, I want to experience the same thought process, I want to feel like the designer of the set cares enough to express that thought process.
Edit: There is a picture at the bottom now that has a small blurb about the set. Either it wasn't there earlier or for some reason, that image did not load for me, so this point is now moot in my eyes.

2. Aperture as a name for a photography themed set does work if the above is done. Expand upon the idea, explain the name, the process, and people won't think of Portal when they see GMK Aperture. Not only that though, but it was literally the first thought I had. Could've easily called it GMK Focal Length, GMK Full Frame, GMK Prime, GMK 35mm, and so on. But, instead, it's GMK Shashin which does work with the sublegends, but only after a search of Google was that apparent to me, a self described idiot.

3. No, I don't know much about the manufacturing side of things, but I do know that new molds do get made. While sure, it will make the kit more expensive, it was simply an idea to throw out. Then again, must have missed over the part right after that says: "Think that might be a winner if possible" meaning, to me, "I have doubts it could be done, but it would be pretty rad if it could."

I like these colours and the way your presented the IC, though the Japanese is a little bit random. People don't normally associate photography to Japan, but sublegends are always nice I guess! Not really sure what to suggest since this IC looks pretty much like just an announcement that it's happening, but if you could make the novelties more interesting to tie Japan and photography together that would be rad.

P.S. There's a typo in the image at the bottom that explains the name of the set, you called it Shanshin haha.

the set could've just been called 'Aperture'

Aperture as a name doesn't work because it would cause people to confuse it with a Portal game themed keycap set.

A japanese name suits the set given that it has sublegends.
And the theme fits. Most of the cameras during the analog photography age came from japan anyways.

Or make the set be ISO-DE as a tribute to the king of glass, Zeiss. Makes just about the same amount of sense to me.

If you have to do this at all, what does it say about the set?

To curb people saying nIcE gMk (insert any from the above list) cLoNe, and to eliminate the need to purchase two separate GMK sets (Evil Dolch and WoB) to replicate one of the base kits (I don't know of any kits that exist with hiragana sublegends with these colors).

I personally feel it has its own place among the listed existing sets.

I see it as comparing the colors to other sets, just for that purpose. If you like the color theme or you dig another, or just to see how it differs to each set or how they can relate. It's not bad or good, just a nice thing to have and reference.

Love the theme as a photography fan!

My only complaint is that the line weight of the novelties (specifically mod icons vs. the enter/shift key) are inconsistent. You also have contrasting styles of the rounded mod icons vs. the sharper icons. Which makes it seem a bit rushed, considering they are purchased icons from different icon packs. Maybe spend some more time on the icon packs? I'm sure you can think of more themes specific to Fuji without infringing on Fuji's copyright.

The Japanese subs are also a bit of a weird addition, but since you're referencing Fuji a bit, I suppose that's a bit of a nitpick on my end.

Love the desk mat.

Good luck with IC!

I actually like the subtlety of this set. It actually looks very relaxing and I think it will turn out great. One thing I would do is ask a couple of people who have ran a few sets to see if they think you should run 2 base kits or 1 base kit plus alphas. No matter where you got the novelties from, it's cool and I can see myself just picking up the novelties set by itself. GLWS.

maybe some more thought into presenting it as a more fully fleshed out interest check

are you literally joking? how is this not as fleshed out as possible for a interest check? he even has vendors in it already.

Something like this would require an entire set of new molds for the F-row and that would make the set a significant bit more expensive.

This is a fair point. As someone who lives in Japan I know what "Shashin" means but I would be surprised at how many people know. It would also be cool to have the kanji for shashin as well. I feel that the word shashin doesn't bring anything to the table other than the sublegends. I'd love to see some more Japanese association to hit shashin out of the ballpark. There is so much more cool Japan stuff you could probably do to connect the word shashin with Japan and cameras. This actually makes me brainstorm right now. Love it. Keep it up.

clean set is a clean set. the "theme" feels like an afterthought... to which is true after reading all of this lol

the novelties leave much to be desired. literally the bare minimum in reference to the theme. since the graphics reference a sort of "dark room" i am assuming this theme is more related to the black and white film side of photography? could dive even further into "street photography" when i think of "japanese" and "street photography" daido moriyama comes to mind; extremely stark black and white work. film has so many aspects one can use: exposure, develop, stop, dodge/burn, etc...

anyways good luck with the set its got lots of potential. at the end of the day, no one really cares about theme lore. its already a clean set.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but the novelty for the enter key, what does the 1,2,3 supposed to be? I would love an aperture ring themed enter key.
Hey! The 1,2,3 novelty for the R3 Ansi Enter is supposed to symbolize the exposure indicator found in most camera hud's!

clean set is a clean set. the "theme" feels like an afterthought... to which is true after reading all of this lol

the novelties leave much to be desired. literally the bare minimum in reference to the theme. since the graphics reference a sort of "dark room" i am assuming this theme is more related to the black and white film side of photography? could dive even further into "street photography" when i think of "japanese" and "street photography" daido moriyama comes to mind; extremely stark black and white work. film has so many aspects one can use: exposure, develop, stop, dodge/burn, etc...

anyways good luck with the set its got lots of potential. at the end of the day, no one really cares about theme lore. its already a clean set.

Ya, Novelties like what you would find when programming a camera might be awesome too. There are a couple but man I would love to see it taken further. I think general photography stuff would be open here like a softbox, camera stand, etc. I like the idea of this set a lot.

Well, he does like his sublegends. Besides, Aperture is taken.

A quick Googling shows me no result for Aperture, but now we're arguing minor points.
Wasn't there an IC for a Portal themed set called Aperture once? I guess it was ditched after the other Portal themed set actually ran, Gateway was it's name I think.

Hmm, on the other hand these images are similar because they are ubiquitous though - they reference a set of icons so commonplace that any argument of copying might as well be moot.

Yeah I agree. I doubt it was copying. But there has to be a line where you consider changing if someone has already displayed your idea a while ago.

I appreciate the support on the Latin base kit. The reasoning why this was replaced with the Latin alpha kit as for now, is because I and the vendors rather wanted to reach a higher MOQ on one of the base kits. That way we can try to adjust the pricing and make it more pleasing for you guys. Also ranging from feedback from the google form, the Hiragana Base was leading with over 20% in votes, so that was an easy choice to decide which base to keep.

This being said, it is very hard to please everyone, but I'm trying my best. Once we submit quotes to GMK, we will throw in all kits, to see what we can do. The Latin base isn't gone yet, it's still a possibility that we might run with it, but this will all be taken into consideration! Thanks

Thanks for your reply and effort! As someone whose first language is an alphabet that has never been offered by GMK or any other premium manufacturer, I feel somewhat strongly about using keycaps with legends from languages that I do not speak. I recognize that many people appreciate "exotic" sublegends regardless of whether they understand that language for practical purpose, but I think it is also ethical to reflect on how you're using someone else's language as a way to fill an aesthetic space. Not trying to specifically call out anyone else's preferences as problematic, sorry that is not my intention at all. I just wanted to share the reason for why I am asking for a Latin base, others asking for a Latin base may of course have different reasons.

Personally I think the Hiragana sub legends in base kit make a lot of sense considering so many camera brands are from Japan (and the name of the set, mats etc).

Also a big fan of higher MOQ sets, which makes them more affordable and hard to do when running 2 base kits. I understand running 2 base kits, if the IC results are close to 50/50, but over 20% lead for Hiragana is fairly significant.

Hoping we get a Rama soon  :thumb:

Personally I think the Hiragana sub legends in base kit make a lot of sense considering so many camera brands are from Japan (and the name of the set, mats etc).

Also a big fan of higher MOQ sets, which makes them more affordable and hard to do when running 2 base kits. I understand running 2 base kits, if the IC results are close to 50/50, but over 20% lead for Hiragana is fairly significant.

Hoping we get a Rama soon  :thumb:

I appreciate your understanding! This is a big part of why I chose to run with subs!

Regarding Rama, there will most definitely be a Shashin x Rama collab :D

nice set, what is the iso hhkb keyboard in the first picture?

Hey, thanks! The hhkb keyboard in the header picture would be the Rama M60-A

Sad to see latin base go... I like this set but unfortunately am out if without the latin base as im not willing to pay extra for the alphas.

I understand your decision!

The colorway is great and the novelties look surprisingly good, BUT! with this set those tiny tiny Hiragana sub-legends just doesn't work at all imho, I don't get it, why make them so small? I'd go full Hiragana (no sub legends) base kit and Alphas base kit and everybody is happy, problem solved, right?

Hey, thanks for your reply! Wish the decision was this easy. We are still waiting on a reply for the GMK quote, once that arrives we will see what the bet price/moq options will be. Once that's settled we will decide upon what kits to bring on to the GB!

Due to a delay regarding GMK quote, we unfortunately need to postpone the groupbuy for now. Meaning it won't go live 1st of May

Once quote is received and prices are set we will set date!

This might be good news for some, and not so good new for others. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do, rather than being patient. The groupbuy will happen, and hopefully it won't be delayed with more than a couple of days/weeks.

Lets try to make the best out of it, and I'll try my best to keep the latin base kit in for you guys!

This being said, you guys are now granted with more time to save up some pocket change for the set!

The IC page looks so dark, but overall I really love this set. Simplistic. I just hoped that the Japanese sub legends were an add-on instead of the alphas as add-on, but that's just "personal preference" as with everything in this hobby. Hope this GB runs successfully!!!

We can't quote this because we have not received all of the vector files yet from the lead vendor. Once we receive all the materials required for the quote we will process it right away :thumb:

Personally I really dig this set! Great design work. I will do what I can to get this processed ASAP once we get all the renders and materials in!

EDIT: S3QL has sent me the files directly, so I will be working on this right away to try to get the quotes our for this set!

Correct, some miscommunication and busy folks affected our vector files to be forwarded. This has now been sorted and the quote is now on the way!

Hoping to get it sorted within the next week or two, and I reckon we'll be looking at going live later this month!

UPDATE REGARDING GMK SHASHIN

- Quote from GMK is still on the way. Some delays regarding novelty measurements, we are sorting out.
- Since the set got delayed by some time, and the interest shown for the Latin Base kit, we will include that instead of the Latin Alphas, as a little plaster on the wound.
- Deskmat prototypes have been produced, and we've been sent some images of them from the factory (images have been posted in discord). Once these deskmats arrive at my place, I will get some proper photos taken!
- Artkey raffle is already done, this was a bit of a bummer, since the delay of the set, made the raffle go live before the GB even started.
- Mechsfashion has hooked me up with a sample of the Mechfashion x GMK Shashin Sleeve! Will grab some cool photos of that before GB!

Setting an estimate on when the GB will go live, is hard. There have been a few delays, but we hope to get everything sorted very soon. Regarding June, there is a few similar sets, so we will have a chat between the vendors, on when we would like to go live!

More updates will be posted, once we know more! Feel free to ask any questions here on in the discord!

Thanks for your patience!

DESKMAT UPDATE

Hey everyone! Still sorry for the delay, but we are hoping to go live very soon!

During the waiting period, we have gotten time to run deskmat samples, which have arrived at both MYKB and me. This begin said, this won't be the first sample run.
I'm not 100% satisfied with the outcome of the deskmats. The material, cloth, and stitching are perfect, but the coloring of the needs some adjusting.

They will both be adjusted a tiny bit. The first one (Shobori) will be adjusted to a larger contrast between the two-toned pattern, that way it will be more noticeable in all lighting. The second one (Poraroido) will also be adjusted a bit, color-wise. As of now, it seems to have a tiny blue/purple miss coloring, that we want to get rid of. We will also make it more contrasty, since it looks a bit dirty now.

Looking at these pictures won't really justify how they actually look in real life. From seeing the two first photos of the Shobori deskmat you might think it's two different deskmats. The first one is taken with a proper camera and lens, and the second one is taken with my phone. This is where I want to make the pattern a lot more noticeable, where you can actually see it in different lighting.

The picture of the Poraroido deskmat might look like the previous render I've provided in this IC. Which is sort of how I want the outcome to be. But looking at it in real life, it does have sort of a blue/purple overlay, which I want to get rid of. I want the design to be fully desaturated.

New samples has been ordered, and I will update you guys once those arrive!
