WFD said in one of his videos to use PCB mounted with a plate whenever you can for increased rigidity.

IF the PCB has holes for the PCB mount pins...not all do.

Hence the "whenever you can" sir. More physical locking connections can't hurt.

I don't always completely read before I post, if I did I might not post as much. ;)

does anyone here know if the gh60 plates are going to be the magical type where you can remove the switch top without desoldering?

i've had a 'i think so but i'm not 100% sure' confirmation from the captain, but can anyone else give me the thumbs up?

Before I post my incredible findings from driving down to pick up what I won on Ebay i have one question?  Is there an easy way to tell the difference between modern and vintage blacks?

Hahaha. Yes, there is. The "CHERRY" logo on the top housing of the switches is visibly larger on "vintage" switches than on modern Cherry switches.

Excellent thank you for the quick response JD

Edit I just looked at my find and the word Cherry doesn't seem to be any larger but there is a lot more detail in the emblem next to the word.  And they feel butter smooth considering the condition of the outside of the case.

You should ask the user. And then you should also credit the picture you use to the person who took the picture.

Would a 1983 date on a pcb from a terminal board be old enough for a black switch to be considered "vintage"

I think you can check the switches to see if its vintage.

Well according to the pic the vintage housing the word cherry was the same size as the logo but the newer ones the word was smaller than the logo.  But apparently there was also a transition period.  Will try and get some macro shots of a stem and the housing and try and figure out this one.

Isn't "Vintage" just a term the community came up with? There's a set date that we all said "this is vintage?"

They changed the Logo around 1991 and around that time (a bit later) they changed the plastic or the mold for the sliders as well, which results in a more scratchy feel.

If it is from 1983 you can be 100% sure that these switches are vintage and as you said they feel butter smooth.

Sure they're not just butter smooth from years of wear and usage? All the usage rubbing away the stems' friction points.

I have had few NIB MX boards with earlier production years black and blue switch, and they still feel different in a better way. Also don't forget the discontinued switch like linear white which are super amazing.

Those are probably 2 of the most overpriced G80 on the internet.

He has said that multiple times but this the first post that I could find.

Did you guys ever stop to think that maybe the people who say "vintage" switches are "thebestthebestthebest" are messing with you? Sounds similar to something someone was doing with MY switches. Bunch of jokesters.

I didn't because this board was the first time I have felt a black switch and I had no idea what the vintage of the switches was.  But in my opinion they are smoother than the reds in my orbweaver.

Edit:  Can anyone confirm either way on if Model M, F, or SSK spacebars are PBT?

I'm 90% sure all IBM boards have PBT caps. That should include the spacebar.

Thanks CPT.  Any idea how well PBT takes to dye, either RIT or vinyl?  Also on that topic how well do home dyed caps stand up to the test of time and use?

1) meeba does RIT dye-ing on his meebcaps. They look amazing.
2) meebcaps seem like they have a good quality. I saw Smallfry's Aircraft Carrier M with red dyed caps which looked good too.

1) Rubbing or isopropyl alcohol, as pure as you can get it.
2) Get some denture cleaning tabs. Put the caps in warm water, put the tabs in, and then wait 20 minutes. Take them out and then dry them.
3) Feel of the cap?
