Secondhand boards
« on: Thu, 31 January 2019, 00:22:33 »
I was wondering if there is anything in particular to look out for when buying a second hand board? Also wondering how well they retain their value? Specifically, I’ve seen a HHKB up for sale, 2 years old but guy is asking nearly as much as a new one but is willing to consider an offer. I want to make a fair offer but never purchased a used board before so not sure how much of its value it retains. 50% 80%?

That's a bad deal 2 years old and the price is almost as new. I have seen used ones go for low of 150 Dollars. Even saw one go for 130 Dollars that one is already sold just saying  :p. I would look at Reddit mech market and look at what people sell them for and buy them for. Most of the time you can see if it sold for the price or not by a stripe trough the title with the sold tag.

That's what I'd call taking the piss. I'd ignore the "consider an offer" part and just not do business with someone who tried that.

General rule of thumb, at least for me...
If it's still on the market, and brand new, don't expect more than 80%, and it better be in mint condition and like new.  If I'm spending more than that, I may as well buy new and get a warranty.

For this, if it was me, I'd offer 50% and that would be generous.
It's a keyboard with 2 years of use. The electronics don't wear but the keycaps do. I'm sure someone out there is willing to pay more than that, but I sure as heck wouldn't. It's not new, it's not rare, it's not vintage, why the heck would I pay near new for it. I don't even care if it just sat on a shelf most of that time, it's 2 years old, has no warranty.

Not sure where you live but when considering price don't forget to factor in import fees - if I buy a HHKB from Japan I'll probably be stung for 20% tax plus a handling fee on top of the cost of a new board.  If this seller has taken this hit it might not be such a bad deal.

That said I bought a used HHKB for £110 iirc and definitely sold it on a couple of months later for £100...

it all depends, some items that are limited runs like with group buys can always raise in price. if the depend is high then the price will reflect that. anything that is run of the mill however should depreciate at a normal rate.
