[IC] GMK Classic Blue (RAMA Cap! GB MAY 4-29 2020 on NovelKeys!)
« on: Sun, 29 September 2019, 11:30:52 »
Group buy thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106117.0

I'm a big fan of blue and have been wanting to run a classic GMK keyset with stock colors for awhile.

I know there are a lot of GMK blue keysets already, but none of them are as simple as I wanted.

This keyset has no theme: it's just a stock blue keyset.

Working with hiney, we've developed the below kits.
MOQ will be 150 for the base kits.

Kits:

Base kit 1: WS1/V4

Base kit 2: V4/WS1

Spacebar kit:

The plan is icon + text mods. I really am a fan of monotone keysets, and that's why I want to try 2 base kits. Whenever I get an alpha kit I don't like paying for a lot of keys I never end up using, so I wanted to try for 2 base kits.

Vendors:
NA: https://novelkeys.xyz/
EU: https://mykeyboard.eu/
SEA: https://monokei.co/
ASIA: https://www.zfrontier.com/

Pricing: TBD, shouldn't be too bad since it's all stock colors.

GB Date:  May 4-29  2020.

Renders by janglad

RAMA Caps:

E-white coating, blue infill. Price TBD

I think the base kit 1 already exists and was ran by LZ.

Sort of, it looks like it was Blue on White with a mod addon of White on Blue. Same colours though.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=82308.0

Right we're aware of it, it's also a keyset you can buy with a GMK keyboard https://uniqey.net/en/keyboard-designer#e00d8e697b4a963e75a2ea1f46014624

Personally I'm most interested in the monotone blue, but we thought the base kit 1 would be more popular.

i personally love and own this keyset, and i like the idea of seeing a re-run of the classic colorway. i hope that this group buy can offer some features that are not available anywhere else. for example, i would love to see some yuri icons / oblivion text mods / hangul alphas / etc in this colorway - additions i would love to pick up and use with the set i already have. the blue base alphas look great too!

I'm totally down for a set & have been wanting to see more simplistic sets ran. As of recently we have really veered into super crazy colorways with some out there color combos. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with that, but it is nice indeed to see a simple, non themed set made with stock GMK colors to keep the GB smooth & fast. Any ideal of when this might run yet or you guys just putting the feelers out here?

I see some issues with the kits, and I have some suggestions.

Base kit 1:
  • The blue R1 \| key is not useful and should be removed.
  • R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn should be added.
  • The R4 1.25u Menu key is unnecessary since there is an Fn key of the same row and size.
  • The ISO support is wrong: it's halfway between the baseline 4 keys and full ISO-UK. Either add the remaining three R1 `¬, 2", 3£ keys for full ISO-UK, or remove R3 '@, #~ and replace them with R3 \| for baseline support.
  • I'd recommend either doing away with numpad sublegends altogether, or having them front printed, like the PrtSc and Pause ones.
  • Stepped 1.75u Control is kinda iffy. Most sets choose not to run it, as the non-stepped one is usually enough. Your call.

Base kit 2:
  • The blue R1 \| and `~ are straight up duplicates; remove them. You need one R1 \| and that's it.
  • 2–6 same as above.

Spacebar kit:
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 1.75c is only used on JD40, and you need two of them to cover that board, so there's not much point in including it.
  • Does a 1.25c mold even exist?
  • As someone who has a lot of 6u spacebar builds, I think it's okay to have just one of the two options. Most modern PCBs that support 6u will have switch holes for both positions.

Anything with a right column (65%, 75%). It's actually probably more popular than R2 PgUp, R3 PgDn nowadays.

might remove the blue \| key if that's the case

r3 pgup/dn sure, i dont use it and dont care for it but we'll see

i like menu key

i dont care to add those extra three num keys, i'd rather add the bare minimum to keep the set cost down for the 75%+ that won't use iso

yea will likely remove numpad sublegends, and remove the front print on the PrtSc and Pause

removing stepped control

yea we did a copy/paste of the blue set, those will be removed ty

2-6 same as above

1.75c will be there because why not

yes a 1.25c mold exists, otherwise we wouldn't include it

yea true on the spacebars, someone always complains though ;)

Thanks pixelpusher! Think that's my favorite of all blues. I have a set of what I believe are the true Olivetti alphas and I like that blue a lot.

I got metropolis and voyage, when they arrive happy to mail you a cap I won't use for what I believe is the biggest blue cap collection anywhere.

Ha.  Thanks.  Yeah, and those are only the ones that are close in color to striker.  I have many other types of blue sets (lots of light blue and cyan)

Blue is best!  V4 is arguably the best “blue” out there.

10/1: updated the kits off of your suggestions.

Psst, you still have those R3 '@ and #~ ISO keys in your base kit, as well as the marginally useful 1.75c spacebar in the spacebar kit. As far as the ISO keys go, remove those two and replace them with a R3 \|. Then for the R4 ISO key you have two options: either stick with R4 \| (in which case there will be a duplicate key), or change it to R4 <>.

By the way, you should update the KLE to use | instead of ¦ for the pipe legends.

Ah, the | vs ¦ war is heating up... finally (?). And it's gonna be nasty, so bare with me while I present facts first and opinions later:

1) | and ¦ are two separate characters (U+007c VERTICAL LINE and U+00A6 BROKEN BAR). The former has been there from the beginning of ASCII and the latter started up life as a visual anomaly (this is not a joke), that afterwards got a life of its own (much like the "grave accent" that later became the "unrelated" backquote).

2) The | character is heavily used in programming, which is why many national layouts have it readily available, sometimes even in the base layer (see the Spanish (Latin America) layout); meanwhile, the ¦ character sees little actual usage, and is of interest only for typographers.

3) The UK English national layout is governed by a standard, that mandates that ¦ must be placed in the R4 key between Shift and Z, in Shift layer, so we should be talking about the key. The same standard places the | character in the key in the AltGr layer (`¬|).

4) Current usage, however, has changed: since before Windows XP, Microsoft implements the UK English national layout by flipping the assignments for | and ¦; implementations in other operating systems have followed suit.

5) Other national layouts (Italian, Portuguese and US English are the most notable examples) also have a \| key, but those have always been about the pipe character and not the broken bar. It's the UK English national layout that is an anomaly in this regard.

So...

You may have noticed that I'm very much a "let's do what the standard says, FFS", and in this particular case, we need to be clear on a few things and separate the issues:

0) It's not a matter of "visual style": | and ¦ are separate characters.

1) For the R1 1.0U and R2 1.5U \| keys, the symbol used should be | and not ¦, because those two keys are meant for keyboards with the US English national layout.

By the way, it's wrong to say that the R1 \| key is not useful - it gets used in HHKB style keyboards, where the 2U Backspace key is split into two 1U alphas (\| and `~).

2) For the R4 1.0U \| key... if we go with the UK Enlish national layout standard, it should be , but current usage mandates \| instead. Given that the document's position is an oddity, and current usage has changed, I would suggest going with the latter.

A few quick comments, besides the ¦ thingie.

1) Please complete the UK English support by adding the missing R1 keys.

2) Consider adding the 1.0U R3 \| key for the benefit of US English over ISO or ANSISO.

3) I wanted to suggest the addition of accented Esc and Enter keys with a deeper shade of blue to the base 2 kit, but seems that V4 is the darkest stock blue GMK has. :-/

4) The space bar kit is great. Don't change anything from it. :-)

Correct, but a mod colored R1 \| isn't useful, which is what I was talking about.

Do you know any boards that use 1.75u space other than Vortex Core and JD40 (which requires two of them)?

I was thinking about maybe a green N7 accent key, or the lighter blue N5, but decided to just skip accents all together. If there's interest we can think about adding an accent esc/ansi enter.

Yep.  True Olivetti is V4 blue

(Attachment Link)

That blue cap collection is awesome!

we like ¦

ill do more research on iso stuff, you can make your own keyset layouts if you'd like

Given that the document's position is an oddity, and current usage has changed, I would suggest going with the latter.

this is great info, ty

in the grand scheme of this set i prefer the split one yeah for visuals. i get they're separate characters. it can and will still be bound to |. and yea we'll adjust more stuff

I just noticed that a Dell rubberdome (that weird one with the wider bottom row) at work uses the split pipe legend on backslash. It might not be strictly correct, but it is a commonly seen variation.

Added some pics from the LZ buy of GMK white-blue.

Based on the IC form, a couple of thoughts: are you guys interested in a R5 add-on kit?

Any interest in a monotone white/blue colorway like LZ offered?

Considering doing 2 alphas kits and 2 mods kits, but that might be more expensive...

10/1: updated the kits off of your suggestions.

Looking at the upcoming slate of keyset gb, we are thinking about launching in February 2020.

Wow this will likely be my next set! To save plastic from being wasted on all your friends here who use 60/65/75% boards, any chance we can split off the numpad into a separate kit? It will also help keep the cost down for the base kit. :)

looking at mid jan - mid feb 2020 now

but with the numpad, it's gonna stay put. otherwise you  may have to buy a numpad kit to moq, and you end up with extra numpads you can't sell later. not many ppl buy a standalone numpad and it doesn't add much cost to the base kit to include it.

Big update: The set will now run in May on Novel Keys! https://novelkeys.xyz/

In order to use Novel Keys as the NA vendor, we have to push the gb back a few months. Sorry for the delay.

This means we have more time to make tweaks on kits, maybe work on some other stuff (deskmats? artisans?) to go along with the group buy, and get some more renders together. We also can confidently offer both base kits which was always important to me.

Thanks again to hiney for working out all this business stuff. I'm looking forward to it and we'll keep you guys updated!

Trying to keep the base kit small but let me talk to hiney about this.

Just since I'm bumping, what would you guys like to see with a deskmat etc? Especially since there is no theme here, would anyone want just a color matched deskmat to the blue, if that's possible of course.

Excellent! I am definitely in. Two requests for your consideration:

1. Text-only modifiers (like the recent GMK Oblivion)? Looks super clean as opposed to the arrows+text for things like "Shift" or "Enter" or "Tab" etc.
2. A 1.5u "Command" key for those of us who use Macs :)

V4 is a stock color for a reason.  It is a fantastic all-around blue.   I will probably pick up both base sets.

Noticed the group buy date moved up a couple of days. Any update on pricing?
