I quite like the idea of this for gestures. With my graphics tablet I can use the pen up to 7-8mm above the surface and it makes a difference not having to press all the time.

Now that's funny, my iBook's touchpad can actually detect my finger about 0.5 mm above the pad sometimes. (And, it's made by Alps.)
