Do you love beer (or liquor)? What are you favorites?
« on: Wed, 21 December 2011, 19:29:51 »
So instead of flooding another thead, I decided to start this one for beer (and liquor I guess =P) discussions. What are you favorite beers for all occassions? What do you have in your fridge? Not a beer fan? What about liquor? Want to try good beer? Ask for suggestions!

My current favorites:
Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' is an awesome "Pale" Wheat Ale but more of an IPA. One of the best smelling hoppy beers I've ever had the pleasure of having.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the definitive beer for its style. Don't like the bitter hop taste? Drink this for two weeks and you'll find other beers will start tasting much better.
Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is roasty, has hints of chocolate and lots of coffee. Great beer for those that don't like the hoppy taste and looking for something that packs a lot of punch.
La Fin Du Monde is an amazing Belgian Strong Ale that has notes of coriander and cinnamon spice and is simply amazing. Can be tried by first-timers but might be a little off putting or confusing. It's flavor is not what most mainstream American people may think a beer would taste like.

Demik: I have yet to try Hitachino but I'd love to some day. Their single bottles around here are like 3 bucks! Kinda pricey but I know they're worth it. I actually hated Rogue's Hazlenut. It was way too sickly sweet for me, tasted like they straight up pumped hazelnut syrup in the beer. Didn't sit well with me. Their Double Chocolate Stout was amazing though, had it on tap. Never tried Hoegaarden even though I probably should. Hear it's an ok beer which just has a great history. That Orange Wheat looks good, I'll have to look into that.

sinis: Pilsner Urquell I have yet to try as well. Anything in the lager family I'm a little hesitant even though Urquell has a great pedigree.

that's a shame, i love that beer. not too sweet IMO. there is also this french xmas beer that i've been trying to find with no luck. they were having a clearance and i got it for pretty cheap, it's called la choulette de noel.. bevmo doesn't seem to carry it even though i got it from them. and yes, try the hangar 24 orange wheat! also, for cheaper beers.. i was surprised at how good bud light golden wheat was.. especially since the rest of their beers taste like crap and you need 2 kegs to get drunk of them. and yeah, sucks that hitachino is so expensive. i think bevmo sells it at around 4-5 bucks a bottle. i only buy that on special occasions lol.

one beer that i will not drink even if my life depended on it is corona. that beer is disgusting. taste and smells like utter crap. and heineken.

While I really hate Corona, Bud, etc, I'll drink them if it was just a group of friends that didn't like good beer hanging out since it's so cheap. Doesn't get me drunk but it goes down like water after a while. If I'm at home and want something good, I'll have something good. My local brew pubs have great beers, especially Black IPAs. I finally had an RIS that was aged in a bourbon barrel and boy did it take on that smell and taste. It was good, but a little too much for me.

I recommend anything from Lagunitas, especially their Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' like I mentioned or their Lagunitas SUCKS (seasonal). Both hoppy with great fruity/citrus notes and smells. I love that. Weinstephaner Weiss is also amazing if you like wheat beers.

one corona that i could drink is corona familiar. completely different taste from regular skunk corona.

i just can't mess with mexican beers, all that i've tried (and i've tried my fair share being that in mexican and my whole family drinks) i just don't like.

speaking of seasonal beer, <3 sam adams oktoberfest. i wish i had a better selection but i have to make due with w/e bevmo has. what i like to do is grab a case of beer im familiar with and buy a mixed six pack of other beers i've never tried before. which is how i found out about hitachino. but it can get expensive.

i'll try something from lagunitas this weekend

I'm not the worlds biggest fan, but I do enjoy a few every once in awhile.  Currently my favorite tends to be of the amber variety, currently fat tire, though that's not as good as the amber at our local micro-brew, but I'm too poor for that, seeing as they've raised prices twice this year, and their service went into the gutters.  Beyond amber, I tend to move around pretty wildly, as long as there's decent quality brews for sale.  None of that stupid expensive domestic (non micro brew) crap, it's all terrible, for more or less the same price.

Demik: Where do you live? Bevmo should have great selection. A Total Wine just opened up in the area and it's beer heaven. We had some stores that had great selection but couldn't match the Total Wine. There are some sites that have beer trackers like Beer Advocate that will show you the best places to get beer.

Fireball: Amber variety are great, and Fat Tire is a decent choice. Very bready taste to it that lingers in my mouth, but otherwise good. Where do you live? Perhaps I can point you in the direction of a beer store that might have make your own six-pack options.

Los Angeles, I think we have a total wine around here. Or something similar to a total wine/bevmo. I just have to find it.

Speaking of fat tire, tried it once but the after taste tasted milky. And stayed in my mouth longer than I wanted it to.

What's hard is finding a bar with these on tap. Usually I'm not a fan of beer on tap because a ton of it gets watered down. But I'd like to taste the tap version of some of the beers I enjoy to see how they measure up with each other.

Here's a list of California Total Wine stores, don't know where you might live in LA but I don't think any of those are in LA proper are they?

I'm sure you should have some great brew pubs down there. Also close proximity to SD so Stone stuff shouldn't be hard to find!

Hays KS, while booze is relatively big business here (a college plus a lot of German Catholics) , I didn't notice anything like that... I wouldn't be too surprised if it wasn't an option here, considering the size of the town.  I suppose I wouldn't know,  I've not been to any of the liquor stores in awhile.

(side note)One of the good things about hays is that they have a pretty excellent microbrewery (http://www.lbbrewing.com/).  Sadly they're a bit too expensive for me these days, or else I'd likely have a growler in my fridge all the time.  Their brews have largely influenced my taste, as I used to drink there quite a bit when I first "started drinking".  Better then anything bottled I've tried yet by a bit.  They make me seriously hope that wherever I end up moving to for work has a decent micro-brewery.

Fat Tire has two major advantages, one is that it's relatively local (6 hours away is about as local of a bottled micro brew as you'll get), the other would be, it's as far as I know the only available amber at my brothers favorite bar.  And on Tuesdays at 2 bucks a bottle it's relatively cheap there.  I'll switch between various microbrews there, leaving hoegaarden as my second favorite of their stock (which at a small bar isn't all that much, but I can't complain too much), but I still prefer the taste of amber.  Chances are when I graduate and get some money I'll likely get a chance to diversify my beer portfolio a bit more.

Balrog: Does the espresso stout taste like straight up coffee? I think I had Lagunitas' espresso stout and I didn't care too much for it. I like coffee but can't drink it black. It was way too much for me. Maybe I'll try some espresso stouts when my pallate develops more.

As for liquor such as whiskey, bourbon, etc. I can't drink those straight. I'd love to be able to sip on them but I tried a friend's Old Fashioned and man, that was a bit too much for me. Again, probably when my pallate develops more. Tequila I've had bad experiences with (Cuervo, ick) and the smell of it makes me gag. If I have the option for better stuff, I'll try it but still hesitant.

Harrison: Thanks for the link for Comman Man Cocktails. I'm at work right now but I'll check it out when I get home.

I totally agree with harrison, good tequila is 100x better than jose cuervo. I do NOT drink vodka in any form, or lots of tequila. In highschool I downed a 1/5th of burnetts citrus vodka (think a $13 fifth) in a little under 2 hours and had alcohol poisoning so me and vodka do not mix well. As tequila goes, I like good tequila, and do enjoy tequila cocktails, but if I get drunk off it, I make god awful choices and wake up in the morning with a terrible hang over.

@Bienc, a great drink for you I think would be a whiskey sour, single not double. I like those because it allows you to taste the bourbon in it, but the sour takes away alot of the bite to it. And no the espresso stout does not have a super heavy taste of espresso. It tastes like a good strong stout with undertones of espresso in it.

Ha!  I'm up here in portland, so I have the same problem.

Currently I'm more interested in Liqueur.  My current fav is Zwack.  Its hungarian, not expensive, and delicious.  I tell people that its what they wished that Jagermeister tasted like.

I also REALLY like Chartreuse (the drink, not the color).  Especially the green one (the drink, not the color).  Its french, expensive, and delicious.  I've tried the yellow and the green version.  The yellow is too sweet for me.  With ice, its fine, but just not special enough.  I've yet to try the older vintages, since they're usually over $200/L.

Edit: Apparently Portland is now famous for aged cocktails - yeah, exactly what you were thinking.  Classic cocktail gets mixed, then put in an old win cask and then sits for 5 or 6 months.  I've yet to try them.  Interested to know if anyone else has.

I don't like the Zwack that is sold in the US, it is too much syrupy than what is sold as Unicum in Hungary, and I wish they sold 'Next' here.
My favorite is vodka, especially Żubrówka which sadly is illegal in the US (toxic schomxic) and I am getting dangerously low on this as well (damn 3 bottle limit). Any Europeans want to send me some?
I drink lots of beer and it is very hard to pick a favorite though I do drink a lot of Obolon Bile, and I favor wheat ales mostly.
I am also fond of sweet wines like Tokaji, Tvishi, Moskately, Khvanchkara, etc.

I generally choose my beer/spirit based on what has the best ml of alcohol to Ł1 ratio, so Tennent's Super and Tesco Vodka it is.

If someone else is buying, I quite like Dalwhinnie* and Hendricks.

I like beer to be heavy, bitter, and hoppy. Here in Georgia the Terrapin Rye Pale Ale is pretty good, out west Rogue Shakespeare Stout.

For common brews, I ask for any kind of IPA, then I like Guinness, St Pauli Girl, and Heineken or Budweiser if it comes down to that.

Ales for drinking along with food, lagers when food is not involved.

Single malts are exquisite, lower grade Irish whiskey is usually better than low-grade Scotch whisky.

Although I was born and raised in Tennessee, bourbon is better than "Tennessee Whiskey" and I prefer Ezra Brooks bourbon for drinking on a budget. I like it straight up, or with light rocks and soda if need be.

Otherwise, a really good margarita is hard to beat. Or a gimlet (don't let them hand you vodka!).

Before dinner a dry sherry is a good aperitif.

Glad to see so much discussion here! Great brews all around and the liquor talk makes me want to try it more often!

fohat.digs: I hear that Terrapin is an overall great brewery. Consensus from /r/beer over on Reddit is that they make excellent stuff. Rogue is great, but I think they're a bit overpriced for what they have to offer. Their Dead Guy is great. Other than that, they're kind of overpriced and from what I've heard, they're kind of really big ****s to their employees. Read an article on it but meh, I could not have read into it much.

mr626: Glad to see there are some good brews down under!

Computer-Lab: Wish I can get Yuengling here. I've always wanted to try it. I hear it's decent, better than Bud/macros, and is nearly as cheap. Good stuff!

I love beer every day of every year.
I can tell all my troubles to those tiny golden bubbles.

Oh, Bushmill's Irish whiskey is great too.

I was wondering if german stores are the only ones that do that. It tastes good if you drink it out of a glas. More on the bitter side though. Much hop.

Beer is good. Just NOT the beers that are heavily advertised on the media :-)
Some favorites:
Spaten, Warsteiner, Full Sail Amber, Steelhead Extra Pale Ale. The latter comes from Mad River brewing company, it has a very pleasant floral character. I sometimes find it at Whole Foods. Here's a pic from their website:

Ukraine has plastic bottles beer, but only large ones like 2-3l. It's the really cheap brands like Arsenalnoye, Lvivske and cost around equivalent of 1euro. You see those bald guys in tracksuits drinking it loitering around metro stations. I remember drinking some cheap piss in Czech in plastic too something like Zlato, and of course the dreadful Newmarkt in plastic jug in Romania but it cost like 30cent.
In the US I see cheap beer like Coors in plastic at the race track. They stopped having glass since people were throwing them at the horses when they were loosing.

Anyone ever had Innis & Gunn Oak Aged beer?

It basically tastes like a sweetened whiskey made into a beer. It's crazy expensive, but crazy good.

There is a brewery in Fort Worth (very close to Dallas, about 40 mins away) called Rahr and Sons.

Not sure how popular they are (if at all) outside of north Texas, but they make really good beer with some ridiculous names like Ugly Pug (black lager) and Buffalo Butt (amber lager).  I'm not a beer connoisseur or anything, but so far that's the best I've had.

Caipirinha, Single Malt Scotch, dark wheat beer. But I'll try anything, from the cheapest mix to the high-end ****. Contrary to the impression the last sentence may give, I don't drink often. Maybe once every two months.

If you're German, try to get your hands on some Andechser Dunkel. It's really good beer.

Prob my favorite grocery store (cheap) beer.  I like both the regular & the darker black & tan.  Sometimes Micahlobs Amberbock to mix it up.

The Yuengling brewery is like a 8 minute drive from my house :D

I should go take a tour of it one day.

Saw a lot of tequila talk - a brand that is really good and not well known nor too expensive I think is Gran Centenario.  I was at Wine & More and they were out of the standard stuff so I got a bottle of Roseangel - http://www.deadasweknowit.com/1166827/Rosangel-Tequila

Those were some of the best margaritas I ever had.

Flensburger Pilsener ftw! But I really don't know if it's possible to buy it somewhere else than Germany. Hell, sometimes it's even hard to find in the rest if Germany. But it's a really good beer, and not too expensive.

I like the fact that the legal drinking age for beer and wine is 16 here! Whoo!

But still I sometimes enjoy a whisky. Glenmorangie is one of my favourites.

And when I'm with friends "Hansen Präsident" (That's "Rum Verschnitt", literally "blended rum". A mixture of Jamaican Rum, rectified spirit and water. Cheap, and fine for mixing) with Cola is fine too.

I agree, the Yuengling lager and the Yuengling black & tan are both quite delicious.  The black & tan is much smoother, and I almost prefer it over the lager.  It may be time for me to take a road trip up to New York and buy a case or two.

If you like Yuengling you should try Shinerbock.  It tastes extremely similar except it's brewed in Texas instead of Tampa.  If you ever visit the Tampa area be sure to take a tasting tour of the Cigar City Brewery.

I got myself wrecked on some of this filth again recently.

Ł2.50 for a 3 litre bottle at 7.5%, so 225ml of alcohol.  That's almost as much as a 750ml bottle of vodka, or a similar spirit.  If you're a sick loser like myself that will chug down any foul tasting liquid in search of a "bargain" I highly recommend it.

Wish we could buy big bottles of cider like that here in Sweden ;)
I dont drink beer and red wine much, but i love most other beverages!

My fav last couple weeks is red bull and schweppes russian. Big glas, ice, lots of slices of lemons, 3 parts red bull, 1 part schweppes russian. Add vodka if you like that :)

Had my first Old Fashioned last night! It was surprisingly good. I asked for it with Crown Royal. I guess I'm just a liquor noob but I would cringe every time because of the whisky taste but it was still good. Can definitely taste the sugars and the fruit. Will try again.

I've tried several different types of beer and can't get into any of them.  I think it's probably the alcohol.

What types of beer? Is the alcohol super prevalent in the ones you've tried? There are some beers that have pretty high ABV where you can't taste the alcohol at all.

I'm rediscovering one of my old favorite drinks. Take some light crisp beer like Peroni and drop a shot of Cointreau and slice of lemon in. I've also been into New Belgium Belgo lately.

The New Belgium Belgo looks good! You might want to try looking for Stone's version of a Belgian IPA. Hear that one's mighty tasty. NB's Trippel is very good as well.

Yeah it's a nice one, perhaps my favorite of theirs. I like IPA, and Belgian spiced, and it's like the best of both. Their trippel is ok, but nowhere near as good as some of the actual Belgian abbey ones, and is not cheap enough compared to make me compromise. Never heard of Stone, I don't think they sell it in my area.

Cigars huh? I've had a couple which were failures. I didn't know how to light them properly. I finally lit one correctly and had a great smoke which lasted for at least 45 minutes or so, but the taste notes that you're supposed to get from them... I don't know. It wasn't Cuban quality mind you but it was an alright one. Fruit notes, etc I don't get. Again, I'm not well versed in cigars (I used to smoke cigarettes and found the difference in Camel and Marlboro tabacco) so I guess it's just experience based.

Yeah, I can't quite appreciate cigars yet.  Whenever I smoke a cigar, I immediately feel queasy.  I get a similar reaction if I smoke an entire Marlboro Red... I smoked for a year and reds still made me feel sick.  I've been told I'm inhaling too much of the smoke, and that I'm supposed to swish it around my mouth for a bit.  eck.

1. the taste
2. you incorporate nicotine over everything: eat it, hold it to your skin, let smoke get into your mouth.
people died by smuggling tobacco leafes on their skin under their clothes. this is how good you incorporate nicotine over the skin. and why you better hide cigarettes from your children. when they eat them they might die. and why nicotine gums and such work.

I just like a cigarillo to my beer. Or even something bigger than this if you have the time.

I had a cigar yesterday and each time I've had one before, I can't stand the way my mouth tastes and I constantly need to spit. I feel like I'm going to swallow poison if I swallow my own spit while smoking a cigar. I know the taste is the most important factor and you're not supposed to inhale the cigar smoke at all but damn. The smoke itself I'm fine with, but the taste it leaves after... ick.

LOL. I smoke usually either Gitanes Brunes unfiltered, or Belomorkanal for cigarettes and some cigars to me are like lights. I also always smoke them 'improperly' as inhaling is not overwhelming for me.
I generally prefer Maduro and Oscuro types and avoid the large ones, and stick with corona or smaller. I have a thing for box pressed ones at the moment too.

On topic: I discovered Philippines beer this weekend. Some of it was sort of weird tasting, but the cheapo San Miguel Pilsen wasn't too bad at all.

San Miguel is the beer of the Philippines. I haven't tried it with my beer tongue, but the last time I did, it wasn't enjoyable. But like I said, I have a different taste now so maybe. I'm from there so it's no hard to come by ;D. Red Horse is another Philippine beer that's supposed to be ok.

Well, I say not too bad, not that it is the greatest... Red Horse, SM Negra and Beer na Beer are the others I tried, but didn't like them so much. Especially not Red Horse, such a bad aftertaste that one. But it is cheap, only $4 / 6pack at the Asian market.

Asahi is a pretty sweet/malty beer. Goes very well with Sushi. But since we have all-you-can-eat sushi places here, it takes up room for more sushi!

That is usually the only time I smoke cigars is when I drink.  I find that it makes me need to drink less to feel a good buzz.  It seems to enhance my drunkenness substantially.

I heard a long time (probably bro science though) that smoking will increase a buzz by a good percentage and make it last longer. No evidence though. If I had to guess, it's probably the nicotine stimulating your brain.

I get a good buzz just from working on computers (granted they're usually plugged in)

Mr. Computer Lab In Basement, I should PM you a few photos of my lab sometime, once it's a little tidier of course. I'm sitting behind 8 monitors at the moment trying to get caught up on work, well trying anyways.

Yes, nicotine has reactions with alcohol, just like many other substance. Caffeine is amongst the funnest, for that amazing hyper aware drunk, popular with the Jägerbömb set. It also increases dehydration adding to the effect of alcohol. :thumb:

I agree, some of the smaller American breweries actually make some very nice beers. You might be particularly interested in Ommegang (Duvel North America). A lot of Belgian beer is imported to US, and easy to find the bigger brands like Chimay, Gulden Drak, Piraat, Duvel, etc.

Ommegang makes great Belgian style beer. Also Unibroue from Canada (pretty easily found in America though, there are many places to get it where I live and you really wouldn't expect to find it here). Their La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, and Trois Pistoles are the top notch and available year round. I think they have some seasonals as well.

I've got almost 2 more years here so I am sure I will try a bunch more. No idea where I will end up next though, but I was around Saint Louis when I was in the States last. Whenever you come back next, always be on the lookout for local brewpubs/breweries with restaurants. Depending on how big their brewery is, they may have some Belgian style offerings, but all the rest of what they have should be higher quality than the usual American Macro.

I had a bad experience with beer at a "young" age, and I've stuck to hard liquor since.
I usually drink Finlandia or Beefeater 24 - haven't quite developed a taste for whiskey, rum, or bourbon.
Occasionally drink Leyenda del Milagro tequila. Being an engineering student, I should probably fix that rum problem real quick...

Went on a study abroad to Belgium a few years ago--ever since, I've been hooked on Belgians.  IPA's are also super delicious.

All time favorite:  Tripel Karmeliet
Favorite from USA:  400 Pound Monkey, Titan IPA is also pretty good
Cheaper go to beer:  Sam Adams

I live in a college town so without special ordering things, most of the selection is limited to widely distributed microbreweries and large foreign brews.   :(

Tastes like an accident spilled beer in cocoa, and then knocked over a shaker of chili powder in it.

That's a great place to start. I didn't particularly like the Sunset Wheat when I first started drinking beer, my cousin told me it tasted like Fruit Pebbles so I totally had to try it. I was disappointed. Had it a month ago (after a year+ of beer drinking) and finally tasted the Fruit Pebbles.

If you have a good beer place, look for Weihenstephaner Weissbier. You will not be disappointed. Also start drinking hoppier beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or something equivalent. It will help you get used to that bitter taste and make many other beers taste better.

All time favorite was a co-worker's homebrew Trippel Bock at his bachelor party.

Love these off topic threads. Should have ventured here before!

I have turned into quite a craft beer lover over the last 6 years!

Used to be a Heineken and Newcastle drinker but now find them to taste TERRIBLE. A doctor my brother works with happens to be married to someone who started a local brewery in 2006 here in Minneapolis called Surly and they are extremely popular now and about to expand. They have opened my eyes to what true beer can taste like and I've refined my taste as a result.

I still love most Surly brews but have ventured out and its quite a journey I must say! Seeing all these new breweries finally opening in the USA is very exciting, expecially here in MN. Almost getting back to pre-prohibition levels now.

Some of my favorites include Founders, 3 Floyds, Steel Toe (another newer MN brewery), Brooklyn, and Deschutes.

I've been enjoying Russian Imperial Stouts almost exclusively for the last year. 3 Floyds Dark Lord, Surly Darkness, Founders Imperial, Foothills Sexual Chocolate, New England Imperial Stout Trooper, Half Acre Big Hugs, Cigar City Marshal Zhukor, Bruery Black Tuesday, Smuttynose Imperial, Weyerbacher Old Heathen, etc, etc...that and some DIPA for a change now and then.

Its very exciting to try the same "class" of beer from the various breweries. There are many suttle differences and its great to be able to experiene them all.

Very excited to try a beer from a brewery in TX called Jester King. They make an imperial stout called Black Metal and I have some on the way right now!

Couple good Norwegian breweries are Nogne Ř and Haandbryggeriet. Have had a barleywine and imperial stout from Nogne Ř and imperial stout from Haandbryggeriet.

Good lord, man. You have connections with Surly?! You sir, have it made. Dark Lord is probably one of my White Whales. No way to get it and no way I'm paying inflated prices for it.

Anyone want to trade beers?

I'm having no luck finding distribution for 3 Floyds, Founders, Victory, Etc in the bay area. Should probably just make a beeradvocate account...

I don't think it tastes like fruity pebbles, but I do think it tastes pretty good :)

If I remember that name, I'll check out the Weihenstephaner Weissbier.  There are a few places around here that have very large selections, so I'm sure I'll come across it.  I've heard of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale but have yet to try it, so I guess I'll move it up the list.

If you want something that isn't really 'beery' beer you might try some Peroni. It's really subtle and crisp, tastes more like Perrier or something than beer and pretty good with a lemon slice.
I'm enjoying some Red Hook IPA (was on sale for $6) after a frustrating time figuring out why the new fans I added for push on my radiator were killing the power. Turned out I accidentally got the wire under the mounting bolt somehow and was grounding out. It's nice now that I have them working, dropped my temperature 10c.

Good absinthe is much different. However you won't be getting it easy unless you are inside Czech Republic since they don't export many of the truly good ones. Good one has some anise taste, but it's not necessarily the primary flavor. A good one is very complex herbal taste, closer to Chartreuse in flavor than Ouzo. You can tell the 'crap' ones apart since there is no herbs in it at all and look like toxic waste made from artificial flavor. All the good ones I tried had 1-2cm of herbs pulp in bottom of bottle and a dark green to almost amber to reddish brown color depending on age since color shifts as the chlorophyll breaks down.

I still have one bottle I managed to bring back from Czech on my last visit.

Well... you do. A lot of them are kept in country, and are made in very small batch as it is. Same goes with your best beers. None of the really great town beers are export either, not even across Czech let alone to the US. High quality small manufacturer have those downfall, but they make up for it in excellence while you are there to enjoy it. Those are some of the things that keep me coming back for visits, along with the food and wonderful people.

There's a brewery in Houston, TX called St. Arnolds. Great beer from what I've tried, and they also have a "lawnmower" and "weedwacker" beer.. decided to try the weedwacker, and it tasted literally like grass clippings. Most odd beer I've ever tried.

Anchor Porter is a very solid beer. La Fin du Monde, and all of the Unibroue beers in fact, have the special Belgian yeast that they use that will make it taste "wheat-y" or spicy. I still have a bottle in my fridge... Should probably pop that one open!

Capital Blonde Doppelbock!! I found some of that in a salvage type grocery store a while back. It was AMAZING. Haven't seen it since.

Also have to recommend Urthel brewery. Right now I'm looking at an empty bottle of Vlaemse Bock that I kept after I drank it.  Sadly it's out of production, but I live about 30 minutes from a place that might still have some remaining stock. Maybe I'll go find out tomorrow....

Great thread! If I can find my camera battery charger, I'll post some selections from my bottle collection.

I'm enjoying some Menabrea Bionde tonight. I don't buy Italian beers too often, but this one isn't too bad.
Also I've been into Brau Brothers Cherry Bean Stout lately. It's probably one of the best coffee stouts out there. Has a real nice coffee flavor without any bitterness or artificial taste that so many of them have.

Modelo Negra recently... for the most part I only drink lagers and stouts. There are some decent local brews in Santa Barbara but I don't go downtown often enough to enjoy them.

Trying to develop my taste for whisky lately though. About half way through the Jameson I bought a few days ago - something cheap, but decent to start me off.

Beerwise lately it's been Modelo Especial, Session Lager (stubbies!!!) and Landshark.  La Fin du Monde when I'm north enough to get some.  I've done every craft, belgian, exotic beer and then some and I keep coming back to these.
Cider would be Strongbow or Woodchuck.  (You lucky spazzers in the UK who can get Strongbow Cirrus...I'm insanely jealous.)
Liquor I'm almost exclusively a gin drinker, my regulars being Hendricks and Tanqueray.
Vodka, when I drink it, I usually go for Russian Standard.  Or Żubrówka w/ apple juice when I can get some.
I make exceptions for Flor de Cana & Sailor Jerry Rum...and Seagram's 7 for 7&7s.

Got a few bottles of some proper absinthe (not that dyed-green Czech bull****) for proper consumption.  No flames allowed.  Legit descendant of Henri-Louis Pernod...can't disrespect the fam.
If you think keyboards are an expensive hobby, try paying $400+ per 30mL of pre-ban Absinthe...

I have a few bottles of some exotic **** I've picked up in my travels: Opal, Topas, Brennevin, Gammel Dansk, Salmiakki Koskenkorva, I love em all...most people think they taste like ass.  Makes for fun party tricks.
