[IC] GMK Pickle
« on: Sun, 11 July 2021, 09:56:20 »
You are sitting at a picnic bench waiting for your deli sandwich to be delivered. It is a hot July day and you’re enjoying a chilled bottle of pop. Then, suddenly you see your order come around. A plate with a wax-wrapped sandwich cut in half, glistening in the sun as it’s brought to you. It’s placed on the table. A deli sandwich, a plate of fries, and a pickle spear right between. The dill and vinegar smell takes over, wafts of the deli sandwich with its fresh bread and accompanied fries join in. It’s a cacophony of tingling delights. You grab the pickle spear, take a bite.... crunch....... Perfection. Now you can evoke this feeling every day at your desk without worrying about crumbs in your
board.

Presenting... GMK Pickle

Kits:

Explanation of the kitting: The kitting is meant to be basic, easy to understand, and easy to pick what you need (ahem, you need all of the kits). We support the more popular 40's, ISO, and ANSI, all in the base kit! I have chosen the spacebars kit to clean up Alice and to support some other spacebar needs. The novelties were kitted in a way that made sense to me, I know right.

More renders of the boards with different colors and angles can be found here: GMK Pickle Full Render Gallery

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!

A very special thanks to the following:

Thatsdho and Stwabee for the renders and graphic design work, great job!
Krugerlive for helping me with kitting, advice, writing IC, and so much more that I cannot fit in this.
This keyset would not be in such tip top shape without you. Thank you so much Kruger!

DotMatrix for the help with kitting and formatting the IC.

The CK regulars, for listening to my long boring messages about a set they do not care much about.

Steve_Laroo for help with kitting the 40's.
Arydz for help with polishing up the IC and my horrible grammar.

IC Feedback Form: IC Form

It would be great for y'all to fill this out! I will read all of them individually and take notes, I will do my best to see what is wanted the most! Thank you.

Thanks for checking this out, have a great rest of your day/ night.

Stay crunchy!

Upcoming changes to kitting gained from feedback:

-Removing accent keys in base kit.
-Adding 1u R3 pipe key, 1u tilde key, and a short left shift for ISO.
-Will be looking into adding 1.5u novelties, my silly brain forgot, smh.
-The 3 keys for 40's support will be the following: R3 1.25 tab, R3 1.5 enter, and R2 1.75 Backspace..
-40's kit's will be icon, not text/icon, keeping in line with the base kit.
- Adding alternate alphas. The color of the alternate alphas is the current mod color.

Thanks to Panda and Riker for the amazing feedback
More feedback will be added here, keep it coming!

(Renders were resized, sorry about the previous sizing.)

Didn't think I would like a pickle themed set. Can't wait for the collabs.

nice work sam

- base 40s support has text + icon backspace and enter but the rest of the set is icon mods?
- are the 'accent' enter & esc supposed to be alpha colored?
- consider 2x 3u spacebars in spacebar kit
- ne f13 avail nvm it's to the right of the 65 mods
- please consider compressing the images
- why is there a shift next to the stepped caps, is this supposed to be control? or is this some 40s thing I'm not familiar with

glwic :)

your kitting is a bit wonky... you have alpha colored "accents" and you dont have proper terminal iso support. That pickle jar novelty may have trouble with spec with the small gaps it has.

1.5u novelties would be cool to see. GLWIC

I appreciate the amount of effort and professional renders put into this set, but I just can't get behind the alpha color, it looks like that one time I chugged a Rockstar energy drink and peed light green.

I have said this before but I'll put it here for posterity:
"Accent" colored escape and enter keys don't make a whole lot of sense for a set with no accent colors. I'd personally prefer to see the 40s support expanded in favor of those two keys.

Couple of additional notes from myself:
  • With no accent color, the spacebar kit might be too niche to meet a large MOQ
  • ISO layout needs a 1u R3 pipe key, also typically has a 1u tilde key and a short left shift
  • Missing 1.5u novelty mods
  • 40s support might need a little work. Coral has 2 different 1u tab keys, a 1.25u tab key, short enter kits in multiple sizes, etc.
  • Seconding panda on the 40s mods. Backspace and enter keys are inconsistent with the base kit

Nice work Sam, this set works really well and I think it will be successful if you work out the minor kitting issues.

...Shout-outs to the Gherkin render with the big bezel alu case lmfao. Did your renderer design that?

Those three 40s keys should be a R2 1.75u Backspace, an R3 1.25u Tab, and an R3 1.5u Enter. They...do not appear to be that size in your render.

Normally "4-key ISO" is ISO Enter, R4 1.25u Shift, R3 1u |\, and R4 1u <>; no tilde involved.

Having two "macro columns" in your novelty kit is rather nice for ortho and colstag boards, since this is likely too niche of a set to support a standalone ortho/40s kit. But I do wonder if there are enough pickle enthusiasts out there to support such a kit at all.
Out of curiosity, are the 1.25u novs dilly beans?

Most of the real comments have been said already, but I have a few alternative considerations:

  • Colour comparisons for your colours next to the other ones, its quite hard to do real comparisons
  • B in base kit. It's a small concession for those that don't get the space kit (or the space kit does not meet moq, as mentioned above)
  • 2u numpad alt colours are superfluous at best. Any consideration for a 2u numpad novelty instead?
  • It bears mentioning AGAIN because this is a real problem, please consider image compression:

Can you find an example of this? Most 4 key ISO support I've seen includes a R3 ~#.

...Agreed that you need to make the images smaller too, m8.

Sure. For brevity's sake I'll stop at ten:
  • Analog Dreams R2
  • Arch
  • Handarbeit R2
  • Hazakura
  • Lavender
  • Lazurite
  • Moonlight
  • Parcel
  • Wasabi R2
  • Zooted
Maybe you're thinking of UK-ISO, which is also a common approach, but requires more than four keys.

Please consider dual 3u spacebars at least in the spacebar kit.

The set = a pickle not one key :D
If the space was dark green then it would just look like the mods and it wouldn't look like a pickle. I see what you mean.
Light monochrome alphas / mods with Dark Esc + Enter + Arrows + Space would work but uh that isn't what you rendered and probably doesn't look as good anyhow. BUT the space would look like a pickle.

- fix the legends on the 3 40% compatible key to be icon, not icon/text
- remove the accent keys as they match w/ alphas
- add ISO left shift
- add R3 pipe
- add alpha colored tilde
