Is there a Teensy kit for custom keyboards?
« on: Fri, 12 April 2013, 01:46:30 »
I am in the planning stages of making my first DYI keyboard and could use some advice on how to proceed.
The keyboard is a split keyboard similar to ErgoDox.
The ErgoDox PCB will not fit in the case.  Switches will be plate mounted without PCB.

Is there a Teensy kit for custom keyboards?  I didn't find one.

Would buying an ErgoDox kit and installing the electronic innards be the simplest way to bring my keyboard to life?
The ErgoDox kit comes with a lot of electronic parts:
 1 x Teensy USB Board, Version 2
 1 x MCP23018 I/O expander
 2 x 3.5mm TRRS connector
 1 x USB mini B plug
 1 x 0.1uF ceramic capacitor
 76 x 1N4148 diode (through-hole) or 1N4148W-7-F diode (surface-mount)
 2 x 2.2k Ohm resistor
 3 x 3mm T1 LED
 3 x 220 Ohm resistor
 84 x Cherry MX switch
2 x USB cable Male A to male mini B
 1 x TRRS cable

Buying the kit might save me time and money, even if I don't use the PCB and case.
Is buying an ErgoDox kit the way to go?  I want to buy the right parts.

I can solder, but I have no formal electronics training.
I value your advice.

After some more reading I decided to build the keyboard from scratch.
All the electronics and 50 switches listed on http://ergodox.org/Hardware.aspx are available for $100.

I will use the ErgoDox PCB drawings to reproduce the key matrices by soldering diodes directly to the switches as lowpoly did on his M0110 mod: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=20898.0
The ErgoDox PCB drawing is available at http://www.ergodox.org/Downloads.aspx
The Front.gtl and Back.gbl Gerber files show the matrix column and rows nicely.
A free online Gerber file viewer is on http://www.gerber-viewer.com/

The cases and mount plates will come from http://www.shapeways.com

I think there might be a market for Teensy kits for custom keyboards.
Keyboard makers can pop the kit into any plate mounted keyboard.

I had meant to reply to this and just got busy. I was going to recommend you look in my "Keyboard Prototyping" thread (link in my signature), and samwisekoi's thread that I link in the OP of that thread. Also, lowpoly's method of direct wiring, which samwisekoi has in his OP. That, along with the Teensy and component likst from Mouser that samwisekoi put in his thread, here http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38847.msg788599#msg788599

Looks like you are on your way to a great start! Please keep us updated. :)
