Title: [GB] h87a LIVE NOW
Post by: hineybush on Tue, 11 September 2018, 22:03:28
h87a returns again, with both a SOUTH and a NORTH version - this is in reference to the spacebar stabilizer direction. Some cases need a north-facing to allow for the PCB to fit properly.

MOST keyboards will fit either. Check the plate of your keyboard to verify which you'd be better off with. The south-facing ones will have cutouts that extend below the switch cutouts, and the north-facing will have cutouts extending above the switch cutouts.

I have updated my compatibility list to reflect this, and showing which of my other PCBs fit in boards:

Look at the "h87a" column.

You must use screw-in stabilizers on AT LEAST the spacebar and 2.75 right shift.

I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS PCB WILL FIT YOUR CASE, even if it is listed as "probable" by the spreadsheet linked above. If you have doubts, wait until someone else with your case tries this PCB.

Specs:

  • TKL PCB, programmable via QMK. - https://github.com/hinnebusch/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/h87a
  • MX plate/PCB mount only. NO ALPS SUPPORT ON THIS VERSION
  • "Skinny A87" form factor - same footprint as B87, but same USB placement and stab layout as A87.
  • Standard ANSI and WKL bottom rows, ISO enter, short right and left shifts, 2u backspace
  • Top-side Mini USB port
  • Bi-directional spacebar and right shift stabilizer mounting (north or south) - You must use screw-in stabilizers on AT LEAST these two positions
  • RGB underglow
  • One-color in-switch LED
  • Powered by Atmega32U4 MCU
  • No physical reset switch - just short two pins on the PCB (for case compatibility)
  • In-switch indicator lights - connected via jumpers
  • Pins to solder a daughter board on (Moon TKL, for example)
  • Fully soldered and pre-programmed with a basic TKL map out of the box
  • SPI pins
  • Breakaway USB port for cases that use USB daughterboards
  • Matte black solder mask w/ white text

What does an "extended USB port" mod entail for the KMAC rows in the spreadsheet?

What does an "extended USB port" mod entail for the KMAC rows in the spreadsheet?

I was told that the KMAC board(s) have a USB port that extends further out than a typical a.87 PCB. Someone may correct me if that's not true.

So far at 31 sold including 5 dedicated to an Australian vendor - more than halfway to MOQ. Very nice showing after only two days.

Ah sure enoguh it looks like it, top is a Leeku 87 which I believe is a.87, bottom is a KMAC:

So the USB would be a little recessed into the case, not bad.

Thanks for the info, the pic helps a lot. Yeah I guess it'd be up to whether the case would allow you to plug into one if it's more recessed.

Sorry for the dumb question, but does this mean I have to take the PCB out of the case to reflash it, or is there some sort of hotkey I can set up in qmk to put it into flash mode?

Not really well versed in qmk.

Yes - the default keymap has Fn + R as the "soft reset" hotkey within QMK. The pins are incase you need to do a "hard reset", and take the place of a switch.

Currently at 37 PCBs ordered.

We're at about 65 ordered

I've updated the design to better fit boards with no clearance for the outdent where the spacebar stab goes. A "downside" of this is that you have to use screw-in stabilizers for those two spots. I've also updated the spacebar and right shift footprints to allow the user to use either stab orientation - north or south. Twitch VOD of the process:

Unfortunately, no, there isn't anything yet.

This is also one of my biggest gripes with QMK -- I eventually found myself with enough QMK boards to make learning how to do everything "manually" worth it, but in most people's cases (yourself included) it's really much too complex. That being said, I think something is being worked on, but you'd need to inquire with folks like MechMerlin or Jack Humbert himself.

Aside from cloning, installing, installing dependencies, updating, reading the documentation, figuring out the learning curve, figuring out how to change the keymap, figuring out how to flash firmware, "oh, an error", googling how to fix errors, reading thread after thread on how to fix something so you can move one little tiny step forward to the next error..

Nah, it's all relatively easy and worth it just to move a switch around.

Sounds like I may have to grab one just to get comfortable with QMK and all it's idiosyncrasies.

The QMK Configurator (linked) is pretty good, and h87a is on there. I need to work with mechmerlin to get more layouts for the board on. You pretty much click and drag the keys you want, where you want them.

The code itself is pretty clean as well, and is clean to compile and use as long as you're just replacing keys. If that's all you're trying to do you shouldn't run into issues.

Feel free to join my Discord at https://discord.gg/u3eFQNz (https://discord.gg/u3eFQNz) for tech support if/when the time comes.

Halfway through the edits for the next/final version.

1. Edited outline (about 1-2mm smaller in all directions) and larger corner radii to better fit some boards, including Jane V2
2. Extend USB port about 1.3mm outwards for a better fit in cases (was too sunken in on some with the protos)
3. Changed diode package for less parts (same matrix, so QMK should be the same) and less cost.
4. Rerouting a bunch of it bc I can make it a bit tidier now

At over 150 ordered atm with a few vendors jumping on board to stock the PCB.

Reminder that this GB will close this Friday, Oct. 5, at-or-later-than Midnight EST.

Depends on how many you order - that should be normal for 2 PCBs. Note that's base shipping price (for one) + PP fee (described in the product listing) + additional price for second PCB packing/material/weight.

May be a weird question, but I forgot to ask before I ordered: are the PCB-mount pin holes Cherry spec? I'm not sure if anyone's been adjusting them to fit the thicker Gateron/Zealio pins, but I'm planning on using Cherry PCB-mount and want a tight fit.

Also, do you know how thick the PCB will be?

I've tested the holes with Zealios and they're snug but the switches can be removed fine. Cherry PCB mount is a slight bit looser, but still snug.

Just FYI, the upcoming v2 switches from Zeal are supposed to have the slightly smaller Cherry-sized PCB mount pins.

Yeee. I don't predict any issues

No, they haven't been ordered (or put up for sale) yet. I'm waiting on the blank ones to arrive so I can build and verify they're good to go before the large order.

The final prototype (ver 1.4) works perfectly with the original .hex files. There's a slight outline issue that I've fixed, and I'm ordering the group buy version (1.5) tomorrow.

Pre-orders will be available this week (Tues/Weds) for $50 per, I'll likely have 25ish available fcfs on my site.

I think I may have to delay the pre-ordering until at least tomorrow (Thurs 10/25) because I'm waiting on some more info from my manufacturer for the money transfer.

Seems that way. If the production starts at the end of this week I'm looking at ~4 weeks until they're shipped to me, then flashing/packing/shipping on my end. Likely closer to mid December (before Christmas) as I'll be out of town at the beginning of the month.

The EU proxy doesn't appear to allow preorders (the GB page shows out of stock).

Hiney could you allocate some stock over there? I forgot about this GB and missed out during the buy period so would be nice to grab one of the preorders before I forget. Thanks!

They have 20 PCBs heading their way, 18 are claimed iirc. They may have two left. I can probably get yours on their shipment, just PM me on Discord (@hineybush#0069) and we can set that up.

The $1.30 is just the PayPal fee (which is actually the GB/$45 amount, the pre-order/$50 amount is a little higher), which is added to the normal shipping fee for the final cost of $8.55

Not exactly sure, but I expect to have them in 2-3 weeks.

I'll be out of town on a business trip from the end of November until Dec 6, I'm hoping they arrive during my trip so I can get to flashing/packing/shipping as soon as I return.

Only issues I've seen so far are a few of the 22ohm USB resistors touching, because I had the factory use them to replace the STF202 ESD chip I originally wanted to use. An easy fix for me. The chip caused a lot of issues with getting the PCB into bootloader mode, I think because it may be designed for USB 1.1 only? Not 100% sure. Regardless the PCBs work flawlessly without the chip, as long as the resistors aren't touching ;)

Sorry I don’t fully understand the issue.  Are a few resistors touching on all the boards, but it’s not a big deal? Or, on a few boards, there are resistors touching, causing those boards to fail QC?

Just built a Keycult No. 1 with one of these PCBs tonight. I noticed that right shift is really sticky compared to the other stabilized keys. There's resistance on the way down and it doesn't spring back like normal. Is there something tricky about the stabilizers in that position? Maybe I gummed up them up with too much/thick lube. I'm using the clear Zeal stabs.

I think I know why.. The right shift and spacebar stabs are bi-directional (the stab wires can be in either north or south-facing direction) which makes the footprints slightly oblong. My best guess is the stab is loose in the mounts right now. You'd be able to fix this by loosening the stab screws slightly, pushing/pulling the stab in the wire/clip end's direction, and re-tightening the screws.

Thanks, I thought that was related. I loosened and retightened in the correct spot and it works great now. When I was building, I noticed the screws in that stab kept sliding towards the middle of the oblong slot once I tightened them down. The tension from being screwed down in the wrong place must have deformed the stab housings enough to squeeze on the sliders.

Thanks for putting this project together.

Anyone know how to enable the caps lock LED?

I've been meaning to add that to the project page on my site, check it out in the next few days.

To connect the caps lock LED, locate the jumper pads (three next to each other, would be either J1 or J2) and bridge the center pad to the pad with a dot next to it, or to the opposite pad to add it to the standard led backlight.

Note that I may have those pads backwards, I won't be able to check until tomorrow.

Could you show a picture as an example? I don't really understand the instructions

One more dumb question, will just a blob of solder work for this?

Yep! Should be okay. I'd recommend using a small bit of wire without insulation or a diode/LED leg, but they aren't necessary.

Hey, yeah! I printed out all of the labels once they were sold. Took me a couple days to get the packing in order, they'll be dropped off to USPS tomorrow.

Yusssss, that was my only real critique: it's not quite flexible enough for my taste to be used with a half-plate. Amazing quality though, very happy with mine.

Can you clarify what you mean by "thinner?" I'd really like to buy one of these to put in a nerd tkl case, but the usb connector needs to be on the bottom side of the pcb to fit. This is literally the only thing stopping me from ordering one right now.

Thinner meaning 1.2mm thick, vs the "normal" thickness of 1.6mm which most PCBs use. I have no plans to make a bottom-USB version publicly available atm, sorry to disappoint.

Found a problem with the 1u winkey LEDs. There's a short due to the trace crossing over the VCC pad.

To fix: Cut the trace at the red line with an xacto/utility knife. Using wire/something conductive, bridge the LED pad to the center (circle) pad.

Also: expect a new round of these in 2-3 weeks (beginning of March I think). Estimated ship is beginning/mid May.

Code: [Select]
Group buys:
H87 round 2  ~$45 for 1.6mm, ~$50 for 1.2mm and alps (based on estimated order numbers)
h87a 1.6mm (regular) and 1.2mm (thinboi) versions. h87a 1.6mm will be red, 1.2mm will be matte black
h87alps - 1.6mm thick only. will be matte black.

The new PCB design stuff is done. I plan to have pricing by the end of this week, and the next GB round will likely start this upcoming Monday (Mar. 11, 2019). It will run for ~3.5 weeks, ending Mar. 29, 2019. No proxies are set up at the moment, but I will be reaching out to vendors to see if any are interested in taking up some stock.

Differences from previous version:

This time around I'll have three versions:
Normal (1.6mm, same as last round) which will be red
Thin (1.2mm, will add more flex etc) which will be matte black
Alps-only (1.6mm thick) which will have alps-only compatibility (WKL, ANSI, and AEK) - need to add bigass enter at this time. This one will be gloss black

Differences from previous version:

  • Fixed WKL winkey LED issue
  • Changed RGB LEDs (2020 vs. 3535 on the old)
  • Improved/redone routing
  • Small tweaks etc. that don't really affect anything
  • QMK will be the exact same as the first round

This time around I'll have three versions:
Normal (1.6mm, same as last round) which will be red
Thin (1.2mm, will add more flex etc) which will be matte black

Just smaller ones. It shouldn't matter really since these aren't wireless, but they'll also use less power.

Since plates are/will be in stock (eta 2 weeks for them to be in stock) they'll ship immediately while the PCBs will ship in May. If you really want me to hold on to them, PM me with your order numbers and I can take care of a partial shipping refund.

I'll def stock extras. I also plan to run the GB through vendors in the future, if not just stocking. I don't want to do the fulfillment myself going forward, so that's how I'll do them.

Phew.  I've been standardizing the PCB on my TKLs using the h87a (8 to date) and my heart sunk at the thought of not being able to get more in the future.
All I need now is VIA Configurator support :)

I'm thinking about adding RGB LED out pins for the LED stuff, so you can add a small strip if you'd need it (some boards have the RGB on the topside, like Duck Unicorn x Legend). thoughts?

Anybody knows where I can find plans to laser cut a compatible stacked acrylic TKL? I found a dusty repo about a uniTKL ;)

TWO MORE UPDATESSSS

Refactored and updated the QMK: https://github.com/hineybush/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/hineybush/h87a

This will be added to the main QMK repo (and I think the Configurator) once the PR is approved.

Added ziptie holes for a direct-soldered cable. It's designed for the small zipties, like <4mm wide.

can someone highlight the differences between this PCB and the XD87 by kprepublic? Was ruminating on getting this for an alps tkl build for a while, then I came across the XD87 which apparently also supports alps. I see that this one uses QMK, which is awesome, but the XD87 being 12 dollars cheaper is definitely appealing to my literally empty wallet, especially if I'm considering buying two PCBs. and lastly, will the XD87 case work with this PCB? unsure of what bottom USB not top means and if it applies to the XD87 case, but if its something relatively easy that a dremel can solve, I'm okay with this. Hard pressed to find a cheaper tkl case anywhere, most of the compatible cases on the list are distant future end game cases at the moment.

I also wouldn't recommend an xd87 pcb, I had one fail after simply unplugging it and the bootloader had to be reflashed. Cheaper isn't always better.

LESS THAN ONE WEEK TO GO FOR THE GB - ORDERS CLOSE THIS FRIDAY APRIL 19

I was asked how I'll handle the thinner PCB and stabilizer mounting. Typically they don't clip in very nicely and can wobble or lift a bit.

I fixed that issue:

They're just small FR4 spacers. I'm including them with all thin PCBs.

Only 2 days left!

I'm considering making the alps PCB 1.2mm thick instead of 1.6mm.

The 1.6mm Alps is a fair bit stiffer (10-20% I figure) than a 1.6mm MX - mainly because of the holes for the MX switches.

any thoughts?

Is there any advantage to it being thinner?

But alps are already paired with fr4 plates for the most part, so I'm not sure if 1.2mm would be too much flex, considering the plate and everything. But I'd be okay with either.

I ordered a 1.2 MX pcb to pair with a polycarb plate. The amount of flex is insignificant, but there will be more flex with a thinner pcb and a less rigid plate.

Is there more docs for this somewhere besides qmk? I'm sure it's posted somewhere, but how do I change rgb colors?

Update-

Still on track for mid-June delivery (to me at least). The blank PCBs are made, and assembly will start after the Chinese holiday. I have a vacation during the third week of June so if I get the PCBs in before then I obviously won't be able to ship many out. It may take a bit for fulfillment on these as there were a LOT of orders, but I can assure I'll get them out as quickly as I can.

Interesting - it should be working as intended if it's definitely the default keymap. If you continue to have issues shoot me a PM or email.

GB Round 2 update - DHL should be delivering the PCBs this week. I am out of town but will start sorting next week (June 9-14). The vendors/GB runners who ordered the PCBs from me for their respective buys will be first priority for me, as they will have a longer ship time. I will likely start actually shipping individual orders ~June 24 or 25 because I'll be out of town a few times again between then and now - I know I know, June's just busy for me. I'll get these out as quickly as I can obviously, with a goal of having extras available ~July 8

At minimum (assuming up to 2 PCBs per variant that have defects that I can't fix), I should have at LEAST: 20 normal, 40 thin, and 20 alps variants.

Got home tonight and unwrapped a pair of thinbois, all is good from what I tested and can see. The LEDs are not as bright as the older version (these use less current) but I don't think it'll affect anything too drastically.

Started packaging/shipping. Will drop off the first orders from my site later today or tomorrow.

I decided to explain my shipping process a bit since I'm sure I'll get the "where is my shipping if you're shipping them" questions:

This inevitably means I ship individual ones last, but those are the quickest and easiest to do since it's a matter of putting the single PCB in a box while packing. I can do a bunch at once this way to save time and effort.

Proxy/large order ones will go out later this week/early next, because I needed to order some larger boxes - I wasn't comfortable reusing the ones my fab shipped in bc 1. they're massive and 2. they're slightly beat up from the shipping

I decided to explain my shipping process a bit since I'm sure I'll get the "where is my shipping if you're shipping them" questions:

  • Sort by "h87"/awaiting shipment/# of line items in ShipStation
  • Start packaging the higher # of line item orders first (more complex/etc)
  • As the # of line items decrease, the # of combinations increases. I then sort these out to like orders (example, if 3 orders have the same 4 items ordered)
  • Pick/pack/label these as I go
  • Drop off

This inevitably means I ship individual ones last, but those are the quickest and easiest to do since it's a matter of putting the single PCB in a box while packing. I can do a bunch at once this way to save time and effort.

Okay, so I'm a bit late (as usual) and looking for a PCB+plate for my Jane v1. Besides the extras, will this have another round, and are you expecting to have plates made for the Jane v1?

Yea FR4 plates are on order. should have them in a week-10 days. Extras wont go up til i have them in stock as well. I'll announce here beforehand.

All GB orders from my store (minus one that I'm holding on to for the time being) are packed and labeled. Will be picked up tomorrow.

Now to do a couple proxy/vendor orders.

Extras will likely be up later this week, will post here and on my Discord at least 24h in advance

The round 2 group buy extras will be live on my site only starting tomorrow, Monday July 22 at 7PM EST. I'm imposing a limit of how many you can order, 1 normal and 2 thin or alps per order just because I only have so many. Novelkeys will have plenty of stock though and should be getting them soon!

Hotswap adds an unnecessary amount of complexity to the PCB, and the people who would be buying this PCB would probably prefer to solder their finely tuned switches onto it anyway.

Great pic, thanks! Looks like the right shift key stab mounts may be slightly on the outer limit of width based on the wire, would it make sense to narrow the distance between them a bit?

Yes. They are literally just a touch too wide. I ended up taking a razor to the stab mounts to make it fit just right. I also ended up bending a wire from an apple bus spacebar because I only had one right shift large enough. It might make sense to make them the same spacing as the others. I know some wires have a reverse bend and alot of boards use a shorter spacing on the right shift.

I just have to send out the Australian proxy orders, will do that tomorrow!

I plan to do two buys VERY soon: h88ce (for Jane V2 CE and associated new designs - thin (1.2mm) only) and another h87a round (normal and thinboi) without RGB underglow LEDs populated in the aim to make the PCBs a bit cheaper (maybe $3-5 per).

I will include some small updates to these as well- likely adjusting the spacebar stab mounting to north-facing ONLY, port positions for daughterboard connection and RGB strip(s), and other small improvements like routing.

I am planning to open pre-orders in the next week or two. Trying to nail down the final color for the 1.6mm version - either gloss green (likely lighter than the proto pictured below), matte black (like round 1) or black FR4 + clear solder mask (see below):

https://www.strawpoll.me/18822462

Example of the black core + clear solder mask:

New features for h87a 1.7:

Redesigned/more robust snap-off parts (USB port, stab anchors around the spacebar area)
JST-SH 4-pin footprints
One for the USB port (daugtherboards can be directly connected now, no cable soldering)
One for an RGB daughterboard (in the area between the navkeys and arrows, or anywhere you'd like really)
A bypass to allow the RGB out from the MCU to be directly connected to the RGB daughterboard, instead of to the underglow (the first RGB LED would have to be removed in this instance)
Removal of the dedicated Reset pads, they are now incorporated into the 6-pin SPI header as the two pins exist there already
Improved ground plane via stitching to avoid needing to jump ground pads when the USB port is removed on previous versions

I plan to order the 1.2mm-thickness thinbois soon after these - likely 2-3 weeks after.

Hey! The currently available h87alps version (1.0) doesn't support Cherry PCB mount stabs but the next version will. As far as plate goes, you'd need one with plate mount MX stab holes. It depends on the case, but some cases have publically available plate files that you can download. If you find a plate file and need it edited drop me a line.

Is the purpose of these boards mostly to provide a versatile quality TKL PCB for people with really high end cases? I have not gotten past to part of this hobby where everything comes a s a kit (case, plate, PCB all together). What are people doing for a plate to go along with this? Does that depend on their case? I don't know how standardized this layout is.

It's meant to be a replacement PCB for cases that are compatible (listed here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fZ8FtTGDl222hXnomQJgKmwRnWvg2VuoJ-GeAafVTLc/edit#gid=0)). Or for those that want QMK.

This is for people who need a PCB for an older kit with a "bad" PCB, or they want more programmability. I sell FR4 plates for a few boards currently, but a lot of the time plates can be reused or their files can be found around the community for someone to have their own cut. A lot of newer TKLs are being designed around the PCB as well

Yep, once I put them in stock they'll be available to pre order. I'm not doing a group buy, I'm going to be ordering a large amount tonight to have ready to ship in about 5 weeks. This will cut a month ish off of the total time needed to wait.

Hiney, can you post this on r/mk and mechmarket? I probably have mentioned the group buy a few times a week this last month. Many looking for PCB's, I bet more would like to buy a spare.

With the closing of Phosphorus and Firefly, and the opening of 4-5 other sets it's a busy day for notifications.

To reiterate on some questions I've gotten:

My end of the group buy for H87As is exclusively US-only (and territories). If you'd like a vendor to pick up a different region in their group buy, let them know to contact hiney!

For this round, is there any chance you have an alps version that supports the rotated F rows like previously? Seems like this version doesn't support AEK layout :(

Any chance of a Canadian vendor or shipping via USPS for future group buys?

Looks like the DHL option is going to end costing more for shipping than the actual PCB after customs / duties they charge.

There's h87c though currently out of stock. It sold via hineybush directly + 1upkeyboards as well.

Don't know of any hotswap or rgb ones though.
