Hi Sprit!

I'm looking forward to your hardware remapping guide. In the meantime, I've written up a guide that works on OS X and should work on Linux as well – I was having trouble getting the Windows tooling to work. Quoted here:

Okay! I've had some success with hardware key remapping of Sprit's FaceW 60% PCB. I haven't managed to reflash the firmware though, which means that certain clever stuff like arbitrary function layers and dual-action keys aren't possible (I don't think), but this is a huge step up from not being able to to type a backtick yesterday.

The following technique is taken from this page. It uses a plain-text buffer as a primitive command prompt.

Steps to remap keys at the hardware level on a FaceW PCB:

Step 0. Unplug the USB cable from keyboard you're remapping to your computer.

Step 1. Open Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (OS X, click "New Document").

Step 2. On the keyboard you're remapping, hold down M and plug the USB cable back in. The following should be printed in your text buffer:

Code: [Select]
ps2avrU

select mode
1:Key Mapping
2:Macro
3:Exit
4:boot mapper
Input Command Number:

Step 3. We're only going to be dealing with Key Mapping (the only thing I've figured out), so enter the code for Key Mapping. (In my case, this was 1, but the site occasionally shows different numbers, so YMMV.) Something like the following will be displayed:

Code: [Select]
Key Mapper
1: Change Layer
2: Select Key - input keycode
3: Save and Exit
4: Exit without Saving
6: Back
9: Reset to Default (Current Layer)
>>

A quick run down of the important options: 1 will change the function layer you're mapping (the default is the normal layer) and 2 will allow you to remap a key in your current layer. The rest are self-explanatory.

Step 4. Let's remap a key (CapsLock to L-Ctrl). Enter 2 and you'll be prompted to press the key you want to remap. Press CapsLock. You'll then be prompted to enter the 3-digit key code you want to remap it to. Using this spreadsheet, identify the correct 3-digit code. In our case, L-Ctrl is 103.

Step 5. You're now back in the menu from Step 3. Enter 3 to Save and Exit.

Step 6. Unplug your keyboard, plug it back it, and verify that the remapping was successful.

If you learn more about this process, please let me know and I'll add it to this post. Thanks!

Good work btw...  :)

Do the metal cases support a hhkb gh60 type layout?

Can the top metal case part be a different color than the bottom metal case part?

To build a board you'd need the following:
1x X% PCB $50 or $55
1x 90 MX Switches $45
1x Cherry Stabilizers Xpcs $10ish
1x X% Acryl Case $80ish
1x Assembly service $45

Obviously the only other things you'd need are keycaps and a suitable USB cable.

Total cost: $230 or similar depending on configuration

I'm after an assembled 60% board, too. (My Pure--for some reason less loved than Poker--is pretty close to perfection as it is, but this board really goes the extra mile all around.) I don't know how many Cherry stabilizers to order, though, and Sprit's order form says they're currently out of stock. Assuming GB2 hasn't sailed yet, should I order without stabilizers? Order with a note to assemble the board after stabilizers are available? Try to install stabilizers myself?

from what I gather the stabilizers are plate mount, and thus need to be put in at the same time as switches or else won't fit, so yeah I guess your best bet is hanging on for stabilizers or ordered stabilizers and keyboard bits and get someone local to assemble!

Not sure if Sprit will resupply.

So if I am to look at putting together what is essentially a Pure, but with the sprits programability  (Yay for more OSX compatibility), and to use a poker/pure case.

Would I be correct to "order" the following with the google docs form?

- 1x Sprit PCB
- PCB colour (black)
- Plate - 1.6mm Alum - whats the differences with the thicknesses? is there a reason for going 4mm alum vs 1.6mm alum?
- Plate colour (gun metal)
- Cherry MX Brown 90 pcs
- Orange LED 110 pcs and White LED 110pcs
- Stabilisers - Out of stock… what would I normally be ordering? 5pcs?   I hear that a new GB will be organised at some stage :)
- No case - Does this PCB fit a pure/poker case? or will I Need to buy one of the cases in this thread?
- No assembly - I am assuming the PCB comes with all its SMD components, resistors, diodes soldered onto the board already? If its not, all SMD components are included with the PCB right?

I have been trying to find where this information is ion this thead, and I've been scanning through the pages in this thread. Apologies if my late night searching has not been as effective as it should be...
