New to Geekhack... Good morning everyone :)
« on: Wed, 15 August 2012, 15:01:35 »
Good morning everyone:

I'm m00n and I'm a budding keyboard enthusiast. I was a teacher of English as a Second Language in Cambodia for five years, spent my free time travelling around other countries in SEA. Now I've returned back to the United States and am going to school to get my Master's Degree in Education. I also work as a tehnical support representative for a major cable company in the interim.

I built a computer in mid 2011 that was pretty nice but I always felt that I had cut corners on certain aspects of it and I wasn't satisifed with it as a result. I purchased an SSD later on and my mb didn't support sata 6.0. I started looking for a new mb. Instead of just buying a new mb, I built a whole new system, this time trying to make everything as perfect as possible. Sometime along the way, I can't remember where or how, I found out about mechanical keyboards, and was automatically interested.

I got a Mionix Zibol 60 in used but excellent condition from Amazon but when it arrived, some of the keys didn't work, so I ended up returning it. Then I got a Das Ultimate. I really enjoyed it and I actually liked the glossy finish but the keys started getting shiny after two weeks so I ended up returning it. I didn't know that much about ABS vs PBT keycaps at the time.

Now I've got two keyboards and a third on the way. I own a Coolermaster QuickFire Rapid w/ Blue Cherry MX, but I'm going to return it because I don't like ten keyless. Although I touch type, I use the number pad for typing in numbers and I really couldn't get used to not having it anymore. I've also got a Monoprice non-back lit mech w/ black cherry mx for work. I've read that people don't really like the blacks for typing but I have no problems with it at all. I type with it all day and I don't get any finger fatigue. I also have a Filco Ninja w/ Blue Cherry MX on the way. This is the keyboard I will replace the Coolermaster with. I really like the clickiness of the blues so I didn't want anything else.

I've just ordered a couple of key cap sets from the classies here. I hope to get a Clack Factory key next time they go on sale or if I can ever find anyone here to sell me one.

Anyways, apart from keyboards and computers, I also like running, bicycling, electronic cigarettes (check me out on Electronic Cigarette Forums), android smartphones (root, rom, apps, etc.), cooking (mostly Asian), live music, reading books.

It's nice being here... I look forward to being part of the GH community. :)

Welcome!  My sister is headed to Cambodia in a week any suggestions of must see things?

Sure... well Angkor Wat is where most tourists visit and for good reason, it's definitely a must see! Also she should visit the beachtown, Sihanoukville (maybe Kompong Som on the map). There are a lot of cool things to do in Sihanoukville but mainly it's for drinking, hanging out at the beach, meeting others. The Snake House is an interesting restaurant to visit, it's a herbarium and each table you eat at has a live poisionous snake encased in glass on the table.

Poipet has a bunch of casinos and if she's in to that, she can visit there. It's illegal to gamble in Thailand so mostly Thais get bused into spend their money there.

Phnom Penh, the capital, is where I lived and worked, so is where I'm most familiar with. Wat Phnom, Independence Monument, Riverside, and the markets are the most popular places to visit. The Riverside has a lot of restaurants and bars, and also a long boardwalk with people selling stuff. It's all overlooking the Mekong River. It's especially famous for Happy Herb pizza shops which sprinkle a special herbs *wink* on your pizza if you ask them too. The lake side used to be very popular but I'm not sure if it exists anymore. It's near Calmette hospital (the only hospital in the capital), and it is where all the backpackers hang out. Great place to meet others, eat cheap food, and hang out at the bars. Most tourists visit the Russian market to get rip off DVDs, touristy stuff, knick knacks, clothes, etc.

If she really wants to go someplace remote people seem to enjoy visiting Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri. I know the people for Dancing Roads bike tours. You can rent dirt bikes and they will guide you through some of the most remote parts of Cambodia.

Finally, she should get some gold while she's there. The gold stores surrounding New Market (Phsar Thmey) have some wonderful gold, 18k-24k, and much cheaper than here in the US. The local markets  themselves have a lot of interesting kinds of food and wonderful fruit/vegetables. Also, there are some wonderful restaurants there. I know that Topaz is French/Asian fusion and is one of the more pricey restaurants. I'll see if I can think of some more stuff... Hope she has fun...

Thanks for giving me your 1000th post. Yeah, I won't overpay for CC's. On Electronic Cigarette Forums, there are mods that are also very rare and sometimes people post them on the classies for three or four times the price. But there are some who don't believe in that and if they like PIF, they help someone out and sell it for what they paid for it. I may never happen, but maybe it will... I certainly hope so... :)

It's great fun but it's not for everyone. It's hot, humid, dusty, and dirty. However, the people smile and are very nice, they don't know what a McDonalds is, the girls are pretty, and the food is good and cheap. Not to mention, you can learn how to ride a motorbike like an Asian.

You're welcome! Just to let you know... the restaurant she should surely visit in Phnom Penh is called Malis... couldn't remember the name of it before. It's Royal Khmer Cuisine in a garden setting and it's fantastic. Bon appetit!

Absolutely... I still admire the stamina/endurance of cyclo drivers. If you're not familiar, a cyclo is a bicycle with a carriage attached to the front. Cyclo drivers can taxi people in their carriages in that heat and humidity all day long. I bicycle around 23 miles a day or run around 7 but I can only imagine the kind of stamina it would take to do their job.
