AEK II Alps 60% Plate Buy
« on: Mon, 27 April 2015, 20:26:59 »
Fill out the form here I can get an idea of numbers.

Crappy plate render:

Expected price: $29 + paypal fees + shipping

Since they should fit in a flat rate envelope, shipping will likely be $6 for Flat Rate + additional if you want added cardboard or a thin wood shim.  Shipping is subject to change, but I don't expect higher that $15 on the absolute high side.

File belongs to JDCarpe and this is a non-profit buy (unless JD wants a little $$ for his services).

Quotes are at 10 units in T-304 16 gauge (0.06in) stainless steel and will likely go down.  The local quotes I've gotten so far came back at $21.50 per plate for laser cut and $29 for waterjet cutting at 10 units.  I'm waiting to hear back from the others. I'm partial to waterjet over laser.

Price does not include Paypal fees or shipping fees.  Since this is a non-profit buy and I expect low numbers, I am not going to add any kind of GB fee, though I may ask for small donations if there's an unexpected added cost.

This is perfect for someone wanting to direct wire an Alps board or for someone who got into Hasu's Alps 60% or expects a round 2.

This will be a quick buy.  Orders will close the second week of May and the waterjet place claimed a one business week turn around, so it should be in the mail by the end of May.

Any chance to get also one with the Dell layout ? I would be in for one so I don't have to butcher my Dell keyboard for the plate.

If someone is willing to make a template for the plate and you can get 10 people on board I can do another run for that after this is done.

Alright, it's looking like I'm at 11 plates (included mine) right now.  I'm missing responses from CPTBadAss, mashby, and echo0 who all said they wanted one, but I'm looking at getting several extras made and seeing if I can get another price break at 20.  If those three commit, I should be at 15 + 5 extras.

I'm also leaning toward the laser cut over waterjet since it's about 30% cheaper.

And I know I originally said the second week of May, but I'm looking to expedite it and get it going next week.  I'll be paying out of pocket to make it quicker, so I would appreciate a quick turnaround with invoices when I send them out.

Yeah, I was going to count you and mashby in the numbers anyways since I know you're both good for it.  I'll probably be getting 20 so there are some extras.

Not yet.  If it does go again, there should be a few extras and I can always run it again.

I recommend cutting a plate with test holes using your planned materials and process before you go all the way through with cutting a bunch of full keyboard plates. 16 gauge is actually slightly on the thick side for keyboard plates: both Alps and MX are ideally intended for more like 17–18 gauge steel, and might have trouble clipping into a 16 gauge plate.

If you make the holes slightly longer than the standard Alps plate spec, you can get them to clip in pretty well, but if you make the holes tight, then you’ll end up stressing and possibly breaking the little plastic clips, especially if the switches are later removed to use in another context.

It's no big deal to move to 0.05" steel.  I was going off a couple of people's stated preferences for thickness that I typically trust on issues like this.  I re-measured two Apple plates and see 0.05", so when I ask for an updated quote at the higher 20-25 units, I'll include the updated 18ga (0.05") thickness.  The thinner gauge will hopefully result in a lower price.

On the other hand, most the MX plates I've measured are ~0.06" thick.

Right now we're sitting at 20 plates if I count mashby who isn't in the form yet.

There are definitely 16 gauge Alps plates out there. For instance, those Leading Edge boards. I just find they tend to lead to a lot of broken plastic clips.

I'd prefer 0.05"  if possible.  For it is sturdy enough for 60% size, many people might be happy with that feeling.  ;)

Alright, got the revised quote.  It's now a little under $20 a plate.  I'll get the order in either tomorrow or early next week and pay for it out of pocket, so I'd really appreciate quick payment of invoices when they go out.  I won't know the cheapest way of shipping until I get the plates.

I plan on going with the cheapest shipping you are comfortable with.  So far the options appear to be the following:

There are potentially other cheaper options like parcel select, but they have no tracking and no insurance.

I'm not too late, am I?

No, the 25 plates includes a few extras that I'm paying for out of pocket, but it closes tomorrow.

Nubs, just go with the flat rate envelope, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure the plate won't bend.

I designed the plate for the buy, but I believe this is what you're looking for:

As a starting point for a discussion, I believe this to be the canonical set of dimensions for a 60% board.

Actually JD, that drawing seems to be missing some key dimensions, namely:

  • The precise X,Y location of the DIP switch pocket
  • The Y locations of the two topmost holes (the ones with the 24.8 and 25.4 X dimensions

I'm guessing the DIP switch pocket shares its left X dimension with the centerline of the hole directly above it, and its Y is central to the plate. If that's true, and if the two topmost holes share the same Y dimension, then that would tell me everything I need to know. But if you have precise numbers it would be good for me to be sure before hitting go on a CNC machine!

Yeah.  The plates should be ~$21 after tax (I calculated $20.84) + shipping + $0.30 PayPal flat fee +2.5% PayPal fee.  I'm still figuring it the best shipping method, but it should end up being $28-35 total for a single plate shipped within the US.  I'm holding off on invoicing until I know for sure on shipping method.

Metalliqaz sent his epsilon with cardboard protecting the plate and PCB and then in a flat rate box. I think Tyvek envelope + Cardboard + bubble wrap will be fine.

I might be able to send them in regional boxes for the same price or less, but the Tyvek envelopes may work too, I'm just concerned about the size.  I'll figure out the best and cheapest after I have one on hand.

Is this already closed? Round 2 PCB just started so I'd imagine more people will be hopping on this (maybe myself too).

Also, these are the stabilizers it accepts correct?

Are there any more of these available? I would jump on one for sure.  Let me know and I will fill out the google doc with paypal info.

I doubt it, but if anyone backs out, I'll be running down the list for extras.

+1! I'm excited about PCB round 2, and would love to get a few of these plates. If we can do round two I'd be in for a few :)

Just got an email back from them (they're not the best at communication).  They said the fitment looks good from the samples I left, but I'll be checking on it tomorrow during my lunch.  They said it should be done in a couple of days after that.  So I said this week, but it looks like it will be next week.

You know, I may just have this plate & PCB in hand and assembled with some orange Alps switches before my round-2 Infinity with Matias switches arrives from Massdrop. And for cheaper.

Saw plate sample today.  Popped switches in and stabilizers.  All seemed good.  There was some dross on the bottom and I wasn't happy with it, but he said there's an option that should take care of that, I just have to wait on a quote.  If it's $1-2 I'll add it, otherwise, I'll see if I can clean the plates up easily myself.  The top was fine though, just some dross on the bottom.

Just got a phone call that they are ready.  No quote was received for the finishing, so I'm assuming that hasn't been done.  I'll take a look at them and make sure they're okay and will probably try and figure out a way to get them looking nice this weekend if they have little bits of dross or anything.

As such, it looks like I'll be doing some clean up on them myself.  I will not be charging for the clean up if I do it, but if you want to give a little extra for it when the time comes, I would not be opposed.

They finished one of the plates, so I'll take a look at it and see how it looks and get a price estimate of it.  If it's a couple of dollars more, I'll go ahead and get them all finished, unless someone has an objection.

I'll be heading in on Monday to pick them up.

Where are you getting the stabilizers for this plate? Is the only option to harvest OG AEKII boards?

Old Alps boards, old Omron boards, anything that used the same style of stabilizing clip.  Some Alps boards used a stabilizer closer to Costar, but most used the same old style.

This is a plate they did what they called line finish or line something on.  I'm supposed to get a quote, but they said it shouldn't be more than a couple of dollars a plate.  I wasn't happy with how they looked without it, so I'll be getting all the plates finished that way so long as it's reasonable.

So, with that said, since I was naive and thought the a finish like that was included in the price, I'll eat the cost as long as it's no more than $2-3 a plate.  If you are willing to pay for the finish, it would be greatly appreciated but not necessary since it was my naive mistake.  I'll include my Paypal email in the invoice if you decide you would like to reimburse me for the finish.

Just got the quote.  Line grain finish is $4 additional.  I'm willing/able to eat $50, but not $100, so $2 is being added.  Sorry for the unexpected overrun.  Again, if you're willing to pay the full amount, it's very much appreciated, but since it's my mistake, I'll be eating half of it.

A huge thanks to everyone who is willing to be invoiced for the full amount.  I wasn't expecting the added cost, but there was no way I could ship out the plates without doing it.  They were just too rough looking.

When will invoices be sent out?

As soon as I have all the plates in hand and shipping cost calculated.  The current timeline I was given by the laser cutter is that I'll have them on hand Monday or Tuesday and, if you pay by Friday the 19th, they will be shipped on Saturday the 20th.  I was hoping this would be done already, but things have been a lot slower than expected from the timelines I was given (3-4 days to cut turned into two weeks).

And if anyone wants White Alps or Dampened Cream Alps and is willing to pay an extra $5-10 in shipping, I can include an FK-2001 (2 on hand) or AEK II (1 on hand) PCB/plate.

Nubbs if you mean you got extra AEK2 for sale, I'd love to get one to use as a donor for stabilizers and caps.

I understand the need to finish the first plate GB before we consider the second one, so I'm happy to wait and look forward to seeing how the first batch will turn out!

Picked up the plates today.  I'll get invoicing going tomorrow or Wednesday.  The after tax price was $25.08, so I'll be invoicing $25 + PayPal fees + shipping to those who said they were willing to pay for my naivete and $23 + fees + shipping for those who haven't responded with a note stating that paying the difference would be appreciated, but not required.

About half the plates:

I still have the two FK-2001 keyboards with white Alps or clones.  They have everything save the case.  They can be added for the additional shipping cost.

I plan on shipping in these priority mailing boxes since they're free, the right size, cheaper to ship priority than First Class, and are no more expensive that the Tyvek envelope to ship while giving more protection.  I'll have to figure out the best/cheapest way   for international orders.

Ooh baby, those plates are gorgeous.

Count me in if there is a round 2.

Also, re: AEK II and FK-2001 - basically just guts right? I'd like the AEKII to harvest a couple spare switches out of it.
The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's surface area (41,285 km²), making it one of the most alpine countries. Despite the fact that Switzerland covers only 14% of the Alps total area (192,753 km²),[2][3] many alpine four-thousanders (48 of 82) are located in the Swiss Alps and practically all of the remaining few are within 20 km of the country's border.

AEK is already gone, just the FK-2001s are left.  I may or may not do a round 2.  If I do an R2, I'll be building a buffer into the price, invoice in advance, and may use someone else and do waterjet cutting.

I hope you do.

I'd pay good money for a dope looking plate like that in lieu of cutting & modding an AEKII plate. I imagine we'll see some folks from Hasu's round 2 when they start to come in.

Has this thread been linked in that one?

I understand the work required to make something really good, so I would be 100% behind paying a bit more (buffer) and getting it waterjet cut :)

I'll take the FK-2001 if you still have a plate available.  Let me know what info you need.

Hey, nubbinator, I will give up the AEK to the next person in line for it, if it's not too late. I have plenty of Alps switches for now, and I'd rather someone else get it than just keep it in storage.

I wasn't in on the plate buy, but I'd be interested in the AEK II.

Well, specifically I'm interested in the locking caps lock switch from it.

I have started invoicing people.

If you are international, I'm invoicing for the estimated shipping cost for First Class International which, hopefully, shouldn't increase when I go to ship.  If I need to buy new packaging, I may have to add a little more to the cost.  International may get a little cheaper to ship if you're willing to risk a Tyvek envelope and cardboard on either side of the plate.  I'm also including the Paypal international currency conversion fee.  If you have US funds you can transfer, let me know and you may save a dollar or two.

If someone really wants my plate then they can take my order. I will still commit to the buy if no one wants it but I also kind of want to make space to buy me a new fountain pen...

I wouldn't mind taking that plate off of your hands.

PM me your paypal address and country.

By three minutes and paid within three minutes of being invoiced.  The next closest was ten minutes of being invoiced.

As of now, all invoices have been sent out.  I'm still waiting on the boxes to arrive.  Hopefully they come tomorrow so I can ship on Saturday.  If they don't, I'll have to see if I can squeeze it into a lunch break or it will ship next Saturday.

I still have a few outstanding invoices and one person who has not responded as to whether they're US or international.  If there are any left over, I'll PM you.  Shipping to Canada should be in the $10-15 range via First Class International.

As for the outstanding invoices, I plan on offering the orders up for others to claim if they're not paid by this coming Friday (June 26).

This is an issue I've had before with trying to fit a Poker II into a Pure case as well, the issue is in the R1-R5 Dimension. It should fit in most other 60% cases though.

Well, stainless is pretty forgiving, and there should be enough material there if you want to have a go at it with a grinder. You can probably remove enough material to make it fit. I have one of those cases, but to be honest, I've never tried fitment with one of my plate designs before.

Still have several outstanding.  First couple of people who respond to this post requesting a plate will be invoiced tonight and it will be dropped off next weekend (sooner if I can find the time during my lunch).  I believe I have 6 plates available and you can ask for up to two plates.

I heard mention that there would be an SGI plate buy sometime soon and that JDCarpe might be designing it.  I don't want to miss out!  Where will it be announced?

Just FYI, the round 1 plates currently don't fit into Pure CNC cases. Confirmed what someone else said earlier.

+1   I thought he said it would be a At101 plate, but I would be down for either.

Alright, sent two invoices and waiting on info for another.  It looks like I have one more plate available after that.

Received my plate yesterday care of Cpt Badass.

This is a great looking plate. The finish is awesome. Can't wait to begin assembly next week.

Yep, Imgur title says Alps 60% AEKII and Granite Pure. Threw me off, too, the first time I saw it.

Crazy!!  Insanely beautiful!   ;)

I imagine, Oneday I might  type on this plate like a buddhist monk hitting a wooden bell to get an enlightenment to nirvana.

No, but this IC may interest you. Another Alps 60% buy is in the works, and there's a possibility that we may have a choice between AEKII and Dell AT layout plates.
