Car Thread

Where are all the car fanatics on GH?

While cars aren't typically a geeky thing, there are so many different makes, models, mods, tunability potential in different cars that I consider it to be.  ^-^

Personally some of my favorites (so you get an idea of what I like):
E30 M3
E46 M3
Lancia Intergrale Evo II
R34 Skyline GT-R
G-Wagen (with appropriate offroad mods)

While I don't really care for expensive exotics, I really love impressive cars that got great handling and balance (power as well), and incredibly capable ones such as the G-Wagen that can handle many terrains.

What does everyone like? Feel free to post whatever you want, as there are so many different types of cars (trucks), and it would be cool to see what everyone's preferences are  :thumb:

I’m a big car nerd. My history is

Bunch of Honda’s and a couple trucks, then
2006 WRX
2006 STI
2006 Saab 9-2X
2008 TL-S 6Speed
Now 2014 Evolution GSR
and the wife has a 14 GTI, although I may jump on the Tesla bandwagon (for her)  if the Model 3 stays at the 35K point. If not the new TDI AWD wagon looks pretty dope. I really don't like her GTI.

I’ve done suspension, wheels, tires, misc. engine work to them all. Except the Evo, I’m keeping that motor stock for a while. I’m doing full suspension this time. Ohline R/T going in this spring.

I thoroughly enjoy spending a day in the driveway wrenching or detailing. I find it super therapeutic. If there was a good road course near me I’d spend some time tracking but nothing is close and everything is stupid $$.

I think you're in really good company here. A lot of users have posted pictures of their cars. And I've heard rumors that the admin/mod team loves cars so much there's been talk about making "GearHack". I had the chance to drive mkawa's old RSX cross country with dorkvader and to ride in his Fiat 500. Both cars are all types of insane. The 500 is so crazy, we were going to make shirts that said "I survived the Fiat".

But personally? I'm not that into cars. When my Camry died I picked up an Altima and I'm really happy with it. I don't feel the need to mod or tune my cars at all. Just want something that goes from A to B....but I really would like something like that RSX.

I was wondering if there was a thread like this on here!

I drive a 1991 Miata, mostly stock except for suspension and exhaust. There's so much I want to do to it, but as far as realistic goals I'm hoping to get a new set of wheels and tires and do a 1.8L swap in the near future if I can stop buying keyboards. lol I don't really track it but it's been through some autocrossing.

In the future I want to get a used GD WRX as a fun winter car since the Miata isn't exactly suited to Pittsburgh winters.

I've had some good rides in my day -

1991 Eagle Talon TSI - this was heavily modified by the end of it's life. The thing could absolutely fly. I wish I could remember my best quarter mile time.
1990 Nissan 300Z
1995 Nissan Maxima GLE
2005 Chrysler 300C
2011 Cadillac CTS-V

There was a bunch of garbage mixed in between the good stuff - a VW I owned was the biggest piece of crap a person can ever imagine.

I've not had any cars that people would typically pour money into, other than the one I have right now. I've only been driving about 6 years as well, so I've not had that many cars.

Of note I've had:

A 2001 Vauxhall Vectra 2.6l V6

Currently got a 1991 Mk2 Golf CL 1.6td

I inherited the Golf last year and I've just been making him road worthy this year. Next year hopefully going to get some nice steel wheels and get the interior redone. Maybe a complete refurb of the undercarriage too, we will see.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I'm 18 so I have yet to buy my own car but I grew up in a great family so I've been able to drive a bunch of cars. The only fun car that my dad has owned while I've legally been able to drive is an ap1 s2000. But he worked for Audi and Porsche for a while so we get cool stuff to drive for a weekend every once and a while. I am currently studying to be a mechanical engineer with the hope I'll be able to get a job in the automotive industry.

I really like cars, but I don't really have the income to buy a track car or a serious road car. I love my focus though as its fun to drive slowly and has good econ.

Also my dads 3.2 Audi A3(?) Quatro is fun when you can throw it round some corners at speed

So yeah. Never gonna sell it hah.

I grew up in the garage with my Dad.  If it had an engine, I was drawn to it.

Here is my list of vehicles starting with my first and the age when I got it (including bikes and boats  ;D)

1983 Tri Zinger 3 wheeler - 7
1977 XL175 - 13 (this was a gift from a neighbor and came in 2 milk crates - I had it running that night much to his amazement)
1985 CR500 -15
1972 Karmann Ghia - 16
1986 Merkur XR4Ti - 17
1985 Toyota Celica Convertible - 17
1990 Audi 100 - 21
1989 19' flat bottom Eliminator with bored and stroked 560ci Ford (Jet boat) - 21
1996 Dodge Dakota Sport 5-speed - 22
1990 CR 250 - 22
1992 CR 125 - 22
2000 Mazda Protege Sport ES - 22

1986 Mazda RX7 FC Convertible - 28
2006 Toyota Tacoma - 30
2003 RM 250 - 30
2011 Honda Fit Sport - 33

I have never left a vehicle stock.  Even the Audi had a full exhaust (which sounded wicked with the 5 cylinder).

Yeah I put a couple thousand into it as I bought it. Transmission, steering wheel, some cosmetic stuff etc. then I put a few more thousand into it. Probably more. They're super fun cars to mod and its a never ending money pit but damn I love mkiis! Enjoy man!

I would like to restore all the bodywork and respray it in original paint, have the entire undercarriage restored, decent sized steel wheels, get all new interior carpets and headliner, new boot liner, buy some recaros and get them recovered in the original fabric that I have in the car (which I ****ing STUPIDLY used to smoke in, so there are a couple of burn marks on the seats), replace all the speakers for new ones, and add a couple of discreet subs in the boot.

Then I would be looking to swap out the engine, get bags or coilovers and whatever. :)

For a week they took away my driver in China, because my aunt needed 2 drivers, and they stuck me with their A8 for a week..  Big cars are such a pain in the ass to drive around in china.. parking was a *****.. and then people will park behind you, and i had to wait 3 hours at a stupid tea shop before they came back.. sigh.....

the only cool car thing related to china is there are virtually no cops,  I was driving without a chinese license..

I think if you were driving yourself, The ideal car for China would be something like a honda fit..

ooo, im looking to get a car early or mid next year. currently have a ****ty 08 sentra.

What you're planning to get ? A good old reliable japanese car ?  :p

either a new fiesta st or a used wrx hatch (if i can find one). or just keep this sentra. it's not ****ty, i just don't like it.

fiesta st is pretty good buy. my sister own one, not the ecoboost model tho.
it suits her more than me. i'm a little too tall for the car. my head almost reaches the roof of the car lol.

I hate how it's only notable for being mkawa's old car rather than being notable for being my current car.

Here it is on the lift. A perfect fit!

I have this since 15 years (it used to be my daily for five years but now it's a garage queen: I drive less than 1000 miles per year on average with it):

84136-0

That Porsche (I already posted it in the other car thread) was "fully depreciated, under appreciated" when I bought it.  It is worth today easily 2x what I paid it (more like 2.5x). The old air-cooled Porsche market seems to go crazy at the moment. In Europe they're getting so expensive that many european buyers are now buying U.S. ones and having them shipped "back home"  :)

And now I plan to buy a second garage queen in the next two months or so (yes, it's going to be black, not red... But the following picture is not a picture of the actual I plan to buy, mine would have grey leather seats):

84138-1

Because I think that model is "fully depreciated, under appreciated" too and looks plain gorgeous. I also think that the criticism about that particular car when it came out makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever today and that people are beginning to realize this (basically when it came out it was criticized for having only 300 hp and tricky handling): very few people still buy these to "race". So I'm pretty sure it will follow the path of the 308 and 328: the 348 shall very probably go up in value. I found a very nice one from one of the most renowned garage in Europe coming with a huge warranty (gearbox, engine, clutch, ...) and as I don't plan to use it a lot (about 1000 miles per year too), maintenance costs should stay low (besides the cam belt, which is a bit pricy and needs to be done about every four years no matter if you drive a lot or not). They're also way more reliable than the 355 (and IMHO better looking than the 355). I know how to take care of one garage queen, so I hope I'll be able to deal with two of them  :p

My daily driver and my girlfriend's daily driver are used BMWs (with small engines, so fuel consumption stays in check), which we buy when they're 6 or 7 years old and then resell after approximately three years. Like Geroximo I also have a BMW Z3 roadster (mine has the tiny 1.9 liter engine, only 118 hp) from 2001 which I use when the weather is sunny.

Perfs are obviously not my thing (I still did take my Porsche to the track, just for fun): otherwise I'd buy a high-end Corvette or a GT-R.

My preference obviously goes to german rear-wheel drive cars and now I'll "jump ship" and try an italian one and see if that diva is as unreliable as many say (but once again, if I'm buying a 348, I'm buying one which comes with a really huge warranty)  :))

EDIT: oops, forgot about bikes... A long time ago I used to have a dirt bike: a YZ 250 (still with the 2-stroke engine). It was too powerfull for me (a 125 would have been better) but I still have lots of fun on the dirt bikes tracks with it. Had a few Vespa and an Honda XR 350 too.  I don't drive any motorbike anymore.

I have no experience with the 348 but I've driven a 308 and it was a blast, not really that fast but the sound is to die for and it had a gated shifter. Also I've driven a few air cooled 911s (mostly late 70s and 80s). You have a made a great choice in cars!

Thanks for the kind words!  Glad to see others here (well, at least one) like these kind of cars too!  I haven't bought the 348 yet but I'm really really considering it (early january I'm driving 600 km to go see the car)... A neighbour not far from here has a 308 and it sounds amazing indeed (but the 308 skyrocketed in value these last two years). As you wrote: they're not really that fast but, to me, they're really great looking, great sounding, fun cars to drive  :)

I like cars.

I've owned Euro and Japanese but never American.  Currently driving an A4 as I have other priorities I need to spend money on but I do miss tracking.  Stick + AWD + Boost = Happiness.  I still have half a 4B11T sitting in storage along with enough parts to cobble together a Frankenstein track car, I'm sure.

Same goes for all cars really.

not really.

traffic. bumper to bumper traffic ruins all the fun of a stick shift car. so yeah, i can see why some people wouldn't want to deal with it.

You can't enjoy the driving when you are out of said traffic though. Fair enough if you only drive in the rush hour, it might be something to consider, but I can't stand them.

Plus automatic trannys are super expensive to fix.

I've tracked both.  Had an Evo 8 and then an Evo X.  The 4B11 is the newer motor.  The 4G63 was the old reliable that I sorely miss.

Yeah, I love my automatic A4.  Sitting in SoCal traffic is so much less painful and in SoCal, there's always traffic, even if it's 3 in the ****ing morning and you're on a ten lane highway. >:D

exactly. just because it's stick doesn't automatically (hue hue) make it fun. you can have fun driving automatic. it's just personal preference.

Newer manual transmission cars are starting to suck.  The clutches went from Cherry MX Clears to lubed MX Reds.

The shifters are not as precise, short shifting as they could be in many cases.

Come on, how much money has been poured into Automatics, can you imagine how good manuals could be with just a fraction of that?

Plus, on the track, it's more driver than anything.  I've seen people rag on automatics then get completely thrashed by those same automatics.  I'll always have a soft spot for manual in my heart but practicality and sensibility definitely have a say now.  They didn't before.

My next car will be automatic - mostly because Volvo is no longer importing them.  My '13 C30 (final year) is the last Volvo to receive the Manual as an option.  It's doubtful when the V40 arrives in a few years that it will be an option.

It's always the driver. People can have amazing cars and drive them horribly, or have awful cars and drive them really well.

While I love how technology is evolving, it depresses me to know that no matter how skilled I can become, I will never be able to shift faster than the majority of these new automatic transmissions now. :(  It gives me a sad to think about it.

That does suck but there is something great about feeling the shift linkage moving. Also tell yourself that you're Senna. You won't drive faster but you'll feel faster.
