You'll have to ask JD! I have no clue how much they cost to make. I bought it along with the PCB, teensy, and some labor from JD (he soldered diodes and teensy for me), so it's hard to tell which portion of the cost was the case.

I had a few made in a small batches (3), and they cost me about $64 each. I need to find a cheaper laser cutter...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm exceptionally pleased with it.

For those skeptical of its practicality, I was initially worried about the same thing, but I've found that it's not too difficult to get used to, especially for writing. Since everything is so close to the home row, your hands aren't ever moving much even for complex chording. This makes lots of things that would be impractical otherwise quite practical on this small layout, like Fn-Cmd-Shift-[ to switch tabs.

Another thing I've noticed is that the layout is sufficiently different that my hands don't get confused when switching between it and a proper 60%. The switch is almost seamless, and I transition to the new shortcuts without thinking about it or making mistakes.

"it's not too difficult to get used to" its a good phrase to define its practicality, or usability. But again, who cares about that after seeing at it.

My layout is still a work in progress (the unicode layer doesn’t even work yet). Layers 1 and 2 are taken from http://neo-layout.org/.

0 Default layer:

  b u . , ü | p c l m f
 h i e a o  |  d t r n s
k y ö ä x q | ß j g w v z

1 Special character layer:
  … _ [ ] ^ | ! < > = &
 \ / { } *  |  ? ( ) - :
# $ | ~ `   | @ + % " ' ;

2 Movement layer and function keys:
  ↑ ← ↑ → ↓ |
 ← ← ↓ → →  |
F F F F F F | F F F F F F

3 Unicde layer with . as modifier:
  b u . , ü |
 h i e a o  |    „ “ ” ’
k y ö ä x ß |

4 Numbers with , as modifier:
  b u . , ü |   7 8 9 .
 h i e a o  |    4 5 6 ,
k y ö ä x ß |   0 1 2 3

All thumb keys but space are dual role keys. For a description see http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41685.0

    0 1 2   |   3 4 5

0: ALT / TAB
1: SPACE
2: LAYER2 / ENTER
3: LAKER1 / KC_ESC
4: SHIFT / BACKSPACE
5: CONTROL / GUI

The next step after that: a onehanded keyboard with two keys for your left index and middle finger. The middle finger operates 0, and the index operates 1. You have to type in the the number of the keycode you want to send in binary. Pressing the two buttons together sends the message and resets for the next keycode.
Just think of that—you wouldn't have to move your fingers at all! In fact, you could have only one arm with two fingers and still operate this keyboard. Or no arms and two big toes...
