[IC] RGBYO double shot kit [need color help]
« on: Mon, 15 October 2012, 19:54:42 »
We had a lot of information in the last RGBY interest check. I'm going to try and consolidate everything from memory that we mentioned and see if we can get everything that we want. Since the other interest check was up for a decent amount of time I'm hoping to keep this one to maybe a week or less.
Here are the bullet points that I think we wanted:
  • Double shots from SP
  • Colors - Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, and Orange (Two 1.25x red, blue, and yellow / one 1.25x orange, one green left shift and another green right shift)
  • Black and White legends (Cherry)
  • Iso keys as a two piece set (smallfry can elaborate)
  • 1.75x shift for Pure, and 1x green key to go next to the shift
  • Selling the keys as individuals so that people that think they may wear out left shifts gaming can order extras
  • Maybe slightly different shades of RGBYO than have been done previously. Open to suggestions
  • Maybe 1x size yellow keys to go with 1.5x modifier set
  • Maybe purple or pink alternate colors for orange since we may build the sets a la cart
  • Escape key?

What are the standard sizes for the following keys:
left ansi shift
right ansi shift
left iso shift
right iso shift
I think left ansi shift is 2.25x size and right ansi is 2.75x size.

ANSI is 2.25 and 2.75. ISO is 1.25 and 2.75. The short right shift from the G80-1800 is 1.75.

I like that idea too. We can put it to a vote, or just have both a la carte if we want.

Also at the moment I'm waiting on some pricing from SP.

Sorry, but the way you want to do this gb is a really bad idea.
-too many options -> low quantities -> high prices....
-selling individual keys -> too much trouble

Nothing is in stone yet, still an interest check, still accepting constructive feedback. Might only have some extra left shifts and that would be the only a la carte keys besides escapes.

Keep the ideas flowing.

Maybe we can keep things simple and propose only 2 sets:

1.25 set:
- 2x1.25 ctrl
- 2x1.25 alt
- 2x1.25 win
- 1x1.25 menu
- 1x2.75 right shift
- 1x1.75 short right shift
- 1x2.25 left shift
- 1x1.25 left ISO shift
- 1 red esc

1.5 set:
- 2x1.5 ctrl
- 2x1.5 alt
- 2x1.0 win
- 1x2.75 right shift
- 1x2.25 left shift
- 1x1.75 short right shift
- 1 red esc

EDIT: 1x1.75 added to the 1.5 set

This sounds like a great idea!
Interested in a 1.25 Set. Also I'm interested in 1x extra 1.75 short Shift and 1-2x  2.25 left Shifts, if those are available.
All would be with white lettering.

Perhaps have 2 full kit versions like eon proposed (1.25x and 1.5x), but also have either an add-on kit that contains the extra keys that are new to this round (like the menu key and a 'Pure' adapter with 1.75x Left Shift and 1x key ) or have those available individually?  That way, those that already have current kits can add those on.  Just a suggestion :)  Either way, looking forward to this next round!

Well in my suggestion the 1.75x right shift is in the set as well as the menu key. I believe the left shift on pure is standard right ? We could add a 1x green key for pure in the 1.25 set too I guess.

We can still use cherry font for a plain "Esc" escape key.

Out of ten surveys so far (nice easy number to work with) 70% want the exact same RGBY colors from previous kits
60% are ok with having the pure compatibility kit included
70% want to be able to purchase some keys a la carte (which would actually make sets cheaper by the way if say left shift keys hit the next price tier)
60% don't want the iso key in the set by default
70% do want the option for another color besides orange available a la carte (7 people like the idea of purple, 3 pink some of the same from purple obviously, and one suggestion for teal/turquoise)
80% want 1x keys included with the 1.5 modifier set
60% want star for the 1x keys
shift and control are most popular for a la carte option at the moment, some requests for escape keys one recommendation for menu key options
60% people want diamonds for windows/menu and the rest is mixed opinions some with multiple options

So discuss and lets get more questionnaires filled out so we can have a more accurate representation of what people want.

So we can use Shift, control, and alt cherry font keys but we can't use cherry text "esc" or "Esc" on the escape key, or the graphics of cherries either. Do we just want a blank red key, or what on there? I was thinking of paying the new legend fee out of pocket and having a key that says:
"  no
escape"

How does everyone feel? What do you want for this set? If you are upset then take it up with the people in charge of the cherry legends, not all of them are opposed to allowing us to have a cherry escape key though. I'm also trying to see if hashbaz will sell us his extra escape keys to just include in this set. Those escape keys would not be group buy prices because they are supposed to fund the cherry legend project.

I think the Escape key font should match the other keys.  What is the reason for not being able to use the Cherry font?

It is looking promising that we will use the cherry escape keys hashbaz has and the proceeds from those keys will go to the cherry replica fund. I'm in the process of seeing how many keys he has, and how much they will be to figure out how much each set will change. This may also give people options as to what escape key they want in their set, and extras should be available if the sales of sets does not use them all up.

I'm sure this buy will finish off the extra escape keys I have, and then some.  My main concern was that nobody would buy the keys that benefit the replica fund if the same exact key is available here for less.

i'd be in for a 1.25 set, but would want an a la cart 1.25 left shift.

I think this would be the cheapest way to get an ISO set.

It's been about a week since this started, which the OP pointed out would be as long as the IC may last. Any update as to what needs to happen for the group buy to get going? I'd love to get it started!

We need to decide on the color codes for everything that has a question mark next to it, and what we want our escape key to be (lower case "esc", "Esc", geekhack, open to suggestions)

Also I want to include an extra escape key with every set until the extras sell out. Doing this will make the sets about $3 more per set but you will get two escape keys, and it will support the cherry replica set. You will have a choice what the extra escape is until that choice sells out.

Tentatively what will be available as the extra escape keys:  60 black Esc, 51 black Cherry logo, 54 white Esc, and 46 white Cherry logo keys. So the first 111 black sets, and first 110 white sets would be $3 more than estimate prices but you can choose an extra escape key.

Do you have a swatch set?  I'd order one and just let us know what you're thinking.  I think enough people have the chips to chime in YES/NO on a color.

If you ask me, the colors of last GBs were totally fine. I would go with those.

What was the yellow color? We still need to choose orange, and the pink/purple/teal colors for a la carte options. I don't have a color ring and if I order one right now it will delay the group buy starting. Does someone that owns a color ring want to help us come to a conclusion on what colors to use?

The RGB codes for both my and mbc's sets are RA, VCM, and BDH.  mbc's yellow is YBP.  I have a color ring, and will snap some pictures if you'd like.

Natural Color System

The four colors should be:
(white legends) red, green, blue, yellow, black
(black legends) reg, green, blue, yellow, white

Alright I set the RGBY colors Unless YY is a better yellow color. Now we need to decide what shade of orange, then between the two pink colors (RCR and RCS) one is like pepto pink the other a light pink, there is probably only one shade of lavender, and the right shade of teal.

Also there are different shades of black and white, what are the color codes that have been used previously?

YY is really bright.  The win keys from my RGBY sets were YY and were generally disliked.  Straight black is NN, and that is what is used typically for black legends.  White legends are usually WFK.

Going to wrap up the poll so we can start deciding what to do.
About 2/3 of those polled want the same colors as previous RGBY kits
For including the pure compatibility kit 16 said don't include it, 15 said yes
20 do want to buy some keys a la cart, 11 don't
21 do not want the left iso shift in the main set, 10 do
18 do not want alternate menu colors to orange available a la cart, 13 do
Only 4 votes for pink, and 3 for teal/turquoise, purple had the majority. Also this question had some overlap but in general just not much interest in pink/teal
21 yes for 1x size key to be included in the 1.5 modifier set, 10 said no
1 x key got 14 star votes and 14 diamond votes. One vote for blank, one for windows logo, one left empty
Those that are interested in a la cart keys are interested in a wide variety of the different options
11 want Diamonds on their windows and menu keys, 8 want Traditional windows/menu legends, 7 want stars, one for Tux, one for Windows 8 logo, one Menu be menu; Windows be diamond, one "simple words:"Windows" and "Menu", unless you put win98 logo on.", and one Text: "meta", "super"

Here are my thoughts and reasons:
Keep the same RGBY colors as previous kits. Maybe a month or two after this buy is over do one for alternate colors
Even though one more person said not to include pure compatibility kit I'm inclined to include it because the poker is supposedly going away, and the Pure may be replacing it. So People just may not know that the 1.75x shift will be good to have.
I want to have keys available a la cart, the numbers are there and it only makes the sets cheaper. Only bad thing is it makes packing slightly more difficult but I think the benefit is there.
The majority do not want a left iso included so I'm torn on this option, it needs more discussion.
Since slightly more don't want other options to orange I will make the alternate colors available as a la cart options, and if they don't reach MOQ then they will be dropped.
I don't think people had lavender in mind when they voted for purple, but I will have these alternate colors available anyways and peoples orders will decide.
1x size key will be included with the 1.5 modifier set, it will be yellow. I could have it available as orange a la cart also if people express an interest
What we put on the 1x size keys was a tie for stars and diamonds. Not really sure how to decide this one. One side of me wants to say diamonds have already been done lets go stars, part of me says stars are kind of "busy".
We will definitely have a la cart keys available for everything.
What we put on the windows and menu keys was also really close. Surprisingly Diamonds barely win this one, maybe people only like stars on 1x size keys. I'd like to have the set with diamonds and maybe the other two available a la cart and if they hit MOQ, and people are willing to pay extra, we'll do them.

Thoughts?

While it would be cool to have a la carte options, I've re-thought my stance and believe it would be better if you cut down on the options and decide the last color(s) and the Pure/iso compatibility before starting the group buy. It would definitely speed up the process and would probably make things a lot easier in the long run.

My thoughts:

1. Definitely keep the colours the same as previous RGBYs.
2. The Pure kit should be decided at your discretion - some people will be happy or unhappy either way - my opinion is to leave it out and have it a la carte.
3. For the 1.5x set Orange a la carte is not necessary IMO - it really doesn't look good with the RGB without the Yellow.
4. For the 1.5x set include both stars and diamonds?
5. Perhaps for the 1.25x set Y Winkeys use diamonds and the 1.25 O Menu key can use a star?
6. Making keys open for a la carte order then cancelling them is a great idea - Left ISO, 1.75x Shift (if you decide not to include it), Purple, Lavender.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

Here is what I'm thinking for the remaining colors
Orange - OAS
Lavender - RCJ
Pink - RCS
Teal (or just lighter blue) - BBQ

If anyone with a color wheel could chime in that would be awesome. I'll probably order a color wheel soon but won't have it for awhile.

Well the RGBY will be the same as the last one, we are adding orange for the menu key, and a la cart options for menu key replacements. I guess if you didn't mind diamonds or stars on every key you could make everything besides the green shift keys different colors.

Maybe noobish question... but does each separate legend color have to meet the MOQ, or just the caps themselves?  Depending on the answer to that question, I guess it will help answer whether we can choose either black/white when ordering caps without having to worry about MOQ for each...

On another note, I would prefer to have an a la carte option and have demand dictate the options available

What is this missing that you need?

So what's the update now...
hashbaz and I are trying to get some final plans made. We were considering doing a blue instead of red escape as something a little different, and also because we are going to sell extra red escapes left over from the cherry replica set so who would want two red escapes? Then we got thinking that maybe if we did an RGB rotation so the control keys would be blue, the shift keys red, and the alt keys green might be cool looking and different from the hundreds of RGBs out there right now. He is going to make a mock up of what it would look like and in a week or two we can hopefully get the group buy started.

Interested in a 1.25 with ISO and 1.5 with ISO set.

What about just offering less different, but more complete sets? The overall price for everybody would be lower then. E.g. only offer sets with ISO and Pure Addons?

Hard to beat the nice red-orange-yellow gradient going on the right side of the standard RGBYO. IMO, the primary colours look a bit jarring when they're used for the Winkey/Menu.

Those look great! The original is great as always, and I like that last set a lot too.

It may be cool to see another option like the last one but with the red and yellow switched (to keep the RGB to Shift/Control/Alt), and a blue Esc. Just throwing that out there.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing some different color combos for sure. All of them!

Definitely interested in the 1.25 ISO variant. I'll lurk and see if we can hit a decent MOQ though. I'm not willing to pay $60. :(

So would people be cool with this as the group buy? It is the same colors as normal RGB just with one rotation for shift, control, alt.

make the orange key a symbol so it can be used for menu or fn depending on the board.

What I really want is a set of the original colors with white legends.  Out of all the alternate colors I like that one best.  Put me down for both.

Uhm, shift is green, control is red, alt is blue.  Don't question the wisdom of Cherry

Well there are 4+ RGB kits already available (MBC, hashbaz, aggiejy, a korean one). Also sometime soon Sherryton is going to have one available as well making 5+. So since we have around 100 extra cherry escapes from the cherry red set in black and white legends I'm going to bundle with these sets, I thought it would be cool to keep the normal color scheme, and just do a simple rotation of the colors. That way people will have a blue and red escape instead of two escape keys. Variety is the spice of life son, the more I look at it, the more it grows on me.

Now that someone sold me a hashbaz RGBY (it's in the mail) I'm more open to the alternative color rotation.  Maybe have each key available in all three colors?  Someone could get all red, all blue or all green modifiers.

I'm putting my interest towards seeing completely new colours instead of just rotating it. Maybe using the secondary colours?
