Favorite Browser Extensions?
« on: Tue, 12 July 2016, 00:03:56 »
What is your favorite browser extension and why? Any browsers are allowed but I will not accept Adblockers as an answer (too many people use them). Answers do not have to contribute to your productivity. Feel free to name one favorite and any honorable mentions.

My favorite extension is currently Vimium for Chrome. Navigating the web with my only favorite input device is rather nifty and boosts my productivity. Honorable mention goes to the Reddit Enhancement Suite.

Imagus is also really nice. But that's about it really.

Distill - https://distill.io

I kind of dont want to share this tip with people but Distill is by far my favorite plugin. Allows me to automatically check web pages if anything has changed. Great for watching for "drops" or new products or just if something comes back in stock.

*browser of choice is Opera.

Strange as it may sound, I have a bad habit of accidentally closing tabs before I'm finished with them.  Undo Closed Tabs Button has been fantastic for helping me with that.  Honourable mentions go to  FireGestures (or any mouse gestures really, FireGestures just happens to be the one I use as Firefox doesn't have them baked in from the start) and mPage, my favourite local rss aggregator.

Cookie whitelist with buttons (keeps the browser clean and harder to track)
Forecast Fox (weather)

The handy one though is Video DownloadHelper, lets you uhh, "time shift" Youtube and other video sites.

Whether you're using Firefox or Chrome, some kind of tab group extension is essential. Not sure why, but they removed that functionality in Firefox by default, so sad. Stylish is really nice if you're handy with a little CSS and you like making sites you visit regularly look nice. Greasemonkey is pretty cool for adding functionality to pages. Besides those two, I only really use a few 4chan/reddit extensions and Adblock, which I turn off for some sites and YouTube videos (support content you enjoy by donating some ad revenue)!

I've used Xmarks for this for a number of years. Not the best interface, but does the job reliably.

uBlock > AdBlock

More efficient blocking (in terms of both blocking itself and performance), no whitelist for Google's tracking.

This^

(Although, I would specifically recommend uBlock Origin if you're a Chrome/Firefox user)

Winzipper.

No I think I've managed to get rid of it now. Still stuck with qksee that keep hijacking my browser changing the homepage. I've been caught with this a couple of times since switching to Windows 10 and I'm miffed. In the past whenever I caught some browserware/adware I ran SBS&D and cleared it out but nowadays finding a good free malware remover seems more difficult.

On Chrome right now I got:

Auto HD for YouTube - Automatically loads videos in the highest quality setting. Not sure if I still need it but have had it for a while and it still works so whatever.
Backspace to go Back - Since Chrome removed that feature in their recent update...
Better History - Self-explanatory.
Cloudy Calculator - Nifty internet calculator. Can ask literal questions and get answers. Basically stupid man's Google in an extension, but save me from opening a new tab.
Downloads Button - Cuz' I like a button to click rather than hitting the shortcut, even though everything goes to my desktop...
HTTPS Everywhere - Essential
Reddit Enhancement Suite - Essential (if you use reddit)
Snap Links Lite - Right click drag to mass open links. Basically what I use most.
Speed Dial 2 - There's pretty much about 10 sites I visit all the time so easy access as my homepage.
Tampermonkey - For the scripts
uBlock Origin - Essential
User-Agent Switcher for Chrome - Use it for something specific. Just spoofs so I can have my Chrome browser recognized as something else (iOS, IE, Android, Windows Phone, Firefox, Opera, or Safari).

Sometimes I use Opera or Firefox and all I got on those are uBlock Origin, User-Agent Switcher, Reddit Enhancement, HTTPS-Everywhere, and Greasemonkey (or Tampermonkey).

I've just updated to Windows 10 again. Back to using Microsoft Edge

The first thing I did was to remove Cortana and Bing and the second thing I did was to download Firefox.

Then there was a load of other garbage to shovel out.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Holy cow!

I did this and now I am blocked from my account!

No matter what I do, I am trapped in a "manage cookies" screen and can't escape!

My absolute favorite is ChangeColors in Chrome.

It lets you change the background/text colors of web pages (or a specific page). It's a godsend for my eyes at night.

There are a few instances where it doesn't work perfectly (like any plugin), but for 90% of what I do, it works perfect. It doesn't change the color of images or anything and you can select the colors you want it to override with.

You can download it from the Google Chrome store but it doesn't seem show up in searches for some reason but here's the link to the google store page:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/change-colors/jbmkekhehjedonbhoikhhkmlapalklgn?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog

I have mine set to black background with white text and red links. I'll post screenshots if anyone is curious how it looks.

As a side note, I can't believe this isn't just built-in to browsers. I can't be the only one who has their eyes singed when using my computer at night. Fortunately GeekHack has a dark theme, at least!
