Building my first Keyboard
« on: Tue, 24 December 2019, 07:38:00 »
Hi guys, I'm going to buy the components for my first keyboard, but first I would have to ask a couple of questions:
- Having to use it for programming would make it convenient for me to have the arrow and the media keys, so I wouldn't know what to choose between a 60% or a 65% layout.
- Which PCB should I take? For 60% I had seen the GH60 and the DZ60, but for 65% I would not know which one to choose.
- Are the mounting plate and the case the same for each PCB? (example: a case for the GH60 fits a DZ60? Same for a 65%)

Thanks a lot and happy holidays :)

60% form factor is pretty standard, most generic cases/PCBs/plates tend to fit. Not so much for 65% though so watch out for compatibility. There is the Tada68 PCB you could use. Check kbdfans.cn.

for standard 60%, the ones you mentioned are fine. you'll want one that supports short right shift (1.75) which both mentioned do. and you can use the bottom right corner as dedicated arrows. (sometimes referred to as the "KBT Pure" layout)

GH60 thread - scroll down to images of possible key layouts

65+% - look at the Tada68, KDB65 & KDB67 from KDBFans, they would have the pcb, plate & case to match.
there was also the Novel Keys NK65 (group buy) that ran not long ago, could watch for extras or 2nd hand.

or do a totally custom one off. https://68keys.io/ (based on the magic force 68 layout)

there's also the Drop Alt https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-alt-high-profile-mechanical-keyboard
