[IC] Vertigo - Special Edition Raffle Wednesday!
« on: Mon, 21 September 2020, 05:53:09 »
Hey everyone!

Welcome to the long-awaited interest check for Vertigo, our latest project! Some of you may have seen teasers on our Instagram, but we're finally ready to reveal the full details!

Vertigo is a seamless, screwless, gasket-mounted 65% with symmetrical bottom row blockers.

There will be two editions offered for this board, the standard edition and a special edition.

The layouts offered are as shown (please note that only ANSI plates will be offered at GB, with ISO plate files being available on our website).

Standard Edition Features:
-Byzantine Purple or Charcoal Grey aluminum shell piece (see renders for more info on colors)
   -E-white aluminum base piece
   -E-white aluminum full plate
-Custom ek65 PCB (QMK/VIA compatible) with daughterboard
   -Custom hard carrying case
   -Custom injection-molded rubber bumpons
   -Price: $540

Special Edition Features
   -E-white aluminum shell piece
   -Sandblasted copper base piece
   -Aluminum full plate
-Custom ek65 PCB (QMK/VIA compatible) with daughterboard
   -Custom hard carrying case
   -Custom injection-molded rubber bumpons
   -Price: $845

Group Buy Information:
Group buy will happen through our website, eniigmakeyboards.com
We will decide the method of GB later on, please let us know your feedback in the comments
Quantities TBD for all variants
Group buy begins in Q4 2020 (after Infinitum is 100% complete)

Smooth Curves

Vertigo features smooth curves all around. All four of its sides are sculpted upwards, giving it a thin upper bezel, but also leaving enough room on the inside for its complex internals.
The back piece of Vertigo is an elegant curve that loops around the sides of the board, in a singular flush motion.

Screwless Bottom

From a designers’ perspective, the screwless bottom on Vertigo is arguably the most exciting part of this board. The PCB and plate are designed to allow for the screws to slot in through the plate.
The screw itself is split resting between the two different halves of the cases, which not only allows an even weight distribution, but makes this whole system possible by not interfering with the switches.

Please join our Discord server for the quickest updates, and to further discuss this board. Note that you will need to join the Discord server to be eligible for the sale!

We have prototypes in-hand, and they will be built by various streamers. Stay tuned for updates regarding those builds.

To see the full prototype album, click this link.

Please note that none of the details here are final, and are subject to change at any time.

Huge thank you to: bisoromi for helping us figure out how to achieve the screwless bottom, Maschine for teaching us how to render, Lbaron for helping us with plate analysis, and everyone in our Discord server for all the encouragement!

I will add some more info, but it is mounted using 13 3mm poron foam strips. So no, it is not an o-ring style gasket.

Is there a picture or render of the plate?
I will add one tonight, thanks.

If enough people request it, we can look into it, but keeping the top bezels slim was a goal for us.

The ESD is all on the USB lines, which is handled by the daughterboard. You can see the unified daughterboard repository for more info.

That byzantine purple looks fantastic with the white bottom.

I definitely appreciate the ESD protection.
One of the finer touches I like is those thick headed torx plate mount screws. Very nice touch.

Why no shots of the full board in the prototype album? Also, does the back and top of the side profile not count as a seam? (I know that might be a little nit-picky ;) )

We will take some more shots of the full board, and add them to the album.

And no, seamed boards usually consist of a 2-part construction, and a board like this is considered seamless.

Sadly, we won't be doing unlimited because we don't think we'd be able to handle the demand.

Also, I wanted to add something - many have pointed out the similarities between this and Keycult boards, and we've gotten the OK by the Keycult team to run this design.

So, you're saying that the accent on the back of the board is not a second piece?

The original statement was phrased badly - my apologies for that. It's difficult to pinpoint a specific definition for "seamless" but in general, in comparison to other accepted "seamless" boards, Vertigo has a similar construction.

Infinitum, for example, is NOT a seamless board, as it consists of a top piece and a bottom piece, both of which are visible on all sides. There are two primary pieces to this board - a shell piece, and a base piece. The base piece (or accent piece) is only visible from the bottom and the rear of the keyboard (and the small peek on the sides).

Not yet, but it will definitely be below Infinitum. The curves and screw mounting points are expensive to machine, however, so I would keep that in mind.

Amazing design, looks really beautiful and sleek. I'm sad there's not more color options though (even though the purple does look nice). Would have loved to see a deep blue.  ;)

What's the typing angle? When can we expect more information about pricing and production quantity?

For this buy, we won't be offering a WK top (and the PCB doesn't even support it). We may look into it in the future but it is overall unlikely due to the fact that the rear curve was designed with symmetrical blockers in mind.

The typing angle is 6.5 degrees. More information about pricing and production quantity will be revealed after the completion of Infinitum, and closer to the GB date.

Not yet, more details to come soon.

Support for ISO Enter but not for ISO split left Shift and ISO key next to Enter?
We are currently looking into adding the ISO split left shift, and the ISO key next to enter is actually there on the PCB, but was accidentally not added to the layouts sheet.

We will definitely consider it, but it is unlikely, considering it breaks the symmetrical nature of the board.

Also, here is the requested, top-down shot of the purple Vertigo prototype.

The second prototype (in grey) also arrived last week. Here are some pictures of it.

Here are some pictures of the plates and PCBs.

Update 12/8

Hi all! Now that Infinitum is wrapped up, we're ready to set into stone some of the final details regarding Vertigo.

Firstly - let's hop into the details regarding the update to Vertigo Special Edition. We are switching out the copper bottom for a full brass, PVD rose gold, base. This brought up the cost slightly, but we hope that it is a welcome change. For those who will inevitably ask - we are confident in our manufacturing partners' ability to handle a PVD project of this scale, and we have a plan in place in the off-chance that things do go south.

Now, let's get to the meat of the update! We will be hosting raffles for both Vertigo standard edition, and Vertigo special edition, both via our custom-developed raffle software (huge thanks to our Discord mods for creating this).

The raffle for Vertigo special edition will take place Wednesday, December 16th. The raffle for Vertigo standard edition will take place Saturday, December 19th. Both raffles will have a large entering window, exact times TBA.

Vertigo Standard Edition will cost $540, while Vertigo Special Edition will cost $845. There will be 120 units of Vertigo Standard Edition, and 15 units to the public of Vertigo special edition. There will be extras of both variants, method of sale TBA.

We will continue to update this thread as we have more updates. Thank you.
