Modding the Leo FC660C
« on: Wed, 18 December 2013, 21:52:45 »
I love my 660C, but I hate its differently weighted spacebar. I'd much rather put the 55g spring either on the escape key (like on the ergonomically weighted realforces) or put it on a key I barely use like insert. Does anyone have experience modding this keyboard? How easy is it to open up the case and swap the springs?

Also, I'd love to know if anyone has modded this board to all 55g. Since topre connoisseurs often talk about how different the HHKB, Realforce, and 660C feel, I was wondering if anyone has modded a 660C to all 55g, and how the feel compares to 55g modded HHKBs and 55g Realforces.

You would have to dissect a perfectly good realforce just to salvage the 55g domes

Yeah but you could make a weird sort of heavier variable realforce monster using the 45gs from the leo and the leftover 55gs (from the extra tkl keys).

Dats alot of trouble . Why not just stick with the realforce?

You can find some of the details of how to disassemble Leopold if you search for silence mods for FC660C. I have a FC660C that I like too. It is the rubber cups not springs you have to move.  I haven't noticed the different weighting of the FC660C spacebar. Some (maybe all) topre keyboards have an extra helper spring on the space bar. My Realforce U87 45g doesn't (bought used) but my new U87 55g does. I haven't looked on the Leopold. I believe the helper spring is approx 5g. I thought about moving my 45g cups over from the Leopold because I prefer them, but the 55g is growing on me. Maybe my fingers are getting stronger.

Uh, what. You can just take off the space bar and move the spring to the Esc key...

Yeah, it's been done. khaangaroo doesn't seem to post much anymore but he sold a 30g silent FC660C on classified a while back.

30g topres , wonder how those feel like

I believe they're said to feel light, linear, and smooth. A bit too easy to actuate, though.
Seems like not too many people have tried modding the Leo to 55g--if I end up getting a 55g RF and try the mod, I'll be sure to update with the results!
