FOLKS!

We're about due for another Keycon. This time it will be in Northern CA; Mountain View at the 724support.com offices (courtesy samwisekoi!).

I haven't nailed down a date yet, but I'm looking at the end of April/early May timeframe. I may stretch a little into May after Cal lets out or earlier in April so that I don't collide with Cal's finals.

Mountain View is easily accessible via San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Jose International Airport (SJO), and Oakland International Airport (OAK). It's also a hop skip and a jump up from Southern California, where a number of our vendors live.

Please use this thread to discuss potential dates (what dates work well for you? what dates don't?). Cool stuff to do, and duration of convention. My initial thought is to make it an entire weekend of events. We could have the convention floor open Saturday AND Sunday and have some cool junkets (John Muir National Park! Marin Headlands SP! Crissy field and the SF Presidio! Museum Crawl! and more!) that are optional and locally organized.

Finally, if you're a vendor, please let me know if you have any major conflicts (trade shows, quarter-end statement prep, etc. etc.) in that timeframe.

FINALLY, if you're iMav, please go through your calendar and post up some dates that work for you.

THANKS FOLKS! Looking forward to meeting everyone and having an awesome keyboard-filled weekend!

CPTBadAss Edit (5/29/14): Just to clear up any confusion this is essentially a community gather or meetup of Geekhackers. We're going to play with samwisekoi's pinball machines, each other's keyboards, and perhaps listen to some presentations from attendants.  I may have a camera to make some fun videos.

At the moment, I'm not aware of any vendors attending. So don't expect that Filco is going to show up with a limited edition Keycon keyboard. There may be some things for sale and vendors have expressed interest in coming. But I haven't heard anything *for sure*.

You don't actually need convention tickets or anything so no need to contact 724support.com. This is the thread that has all the information. All you need to do is to show up on 7/12-7/13 the tentative start time of 0900 Pacific Time USA (9 AM). Tentative end times (not including dinners/hangouts) is at 1700 Pacific Time USA (5 PM).

This thread will be updated with more solid info when it comes in. Tentative planning information can be found in the Organization thread found above.

6/6/14 - CPTBadAss is running a GB for Keycon t-shirts here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59117.0). Please take a look if you're interested.

If I can manage to put the money aside for it, any summer weekend should work perfectly for me! KEYCONNNN YEAHHHHHH!

Please let this be in the summer. It definitely needs to be on a weekend. May at the earliest. I'll be going regardless but it would really be better for me if it were May or early June...maybe even later in the year. Think I have conflicts late June and late August. Other than that I'm not too picky for a "summer" timeframe.

I think a full day of keyboards would work out fine. Like 10-6 or something?

And then another day of hanging out. If we're going to SFO? I demand a food crawl; with lots of coffee and ice cream. What would really be cool is if we could go to like Massdrop or something keyboard/computer related. I'm sure I'll have more ideas after I visit this month.

I'll submit a vacation request now, but there's a very good chance I will be able to take some time off around then. Time to start raising funds for airfare!

Once you finalize the date, I will have a better idea if I can make it or not.

I wish I could attend but alas I don't think I can convince the wife to take that long of a drive (also a sitter for the 5 and 1 year old for an entire weekend might be a bit of an issue).  That said I would love to join but I doubt I can.  I will still be keeping all ears on everything Keycon.

This x1000. Two months of notice isn't nearly enough.

Hotels, travel plans, reservations, and perhaps things like streaming/presentations all need to be planned out.

please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong here, but i feel like the two major factors to consider in scheduling the western keycon is

a) travel costs. summer flights into the SF area are significantly more expensive than spring flights.

b) college schedules. we have lots of students here, and many of the people who will want to come are students at UC or CSU. most UCs (except for cal) let out mid-june. Cal lets out mid-may. if we schedule for sooner (april?), we shouldn't run into anyone's exam schedules. between early may and mid-june, however, there's a big old dead zone in which someone's going to have exams and not be able to make it.

so my thinking is that, first, we need to decide whether we want a spring con or a summer con. if we go with spring, we want to schedule ASAP and probably for mid-april. if we go with summer, we have a little more time to schedule, but will probably want to stick to end of june, first week of july at the latest.

thankfully, weather is not an issue for keycon west. it's going to be pretty great no matter when we schedule for.

so, thoughts on those two options? (mid-april vs late june)

I vote summer, mid-June or early July. I have some plans the last week of June that I can't move.

And like I said before people need time to organize flights, deal with their jobs/school, find hotels, and anything else in their lives. A short two month notice is going to be rushed like the last Keycon where we barely got any time to prepare. The hotel situation in particular was not ideal.

Mid April is not ideal since people would have to start looking at flights *right now*.

I have to vote for Spring.  I am good for either, but the earlier time fits my budget for the year better.  Also, as mkawa said, the tickets/hotels should be cheaper around April rather than over the summer when there is more tourist activity.

Two keycons a few weeks apart.

I hate to be super pessimistic but I think demik has a point. It's hard enough to get interest in a meet up in general. People get busy, they have money issues, they need to figure out how to get there, and figure out who's watching the kids, etc etc. We need time to plan, save, and organize. Last year's hotel situation was far from ideal for a group of people. I had a headache trying to find rooms for people or help people find rooms. And the presentations were kind of rushed. To suggest that book-ending the summer will work out is very hopeful in my opinion.

If this does happen as planned, I suspect that Midwest will have much better turn out than West. We have another ten months in the year, can't we spread this out further?

By the way, tickets in April/early May do seem to be rather cheap.  Only a bit above $300 from Indianapolis last time I checked, which is pretty low for a cross-country trip from our lower tier airport.

Pinball - confirmed.
Pool Table - confirmed.
Gaming PC with Steam and projector in conference room - confirmed.
Go-Karts - confirmed, but not running, and not really a safe parking lot any more.  :'(

This event must be on a weekend -- there is an actual company infesting the premises during the week.

By the way, tickets in April/early May do seem to be rather cheap.  Only a bit above $300 from Indianapolis last time I checked, which is pretty low for a cross-country trip from our lower tier airport.

FWIW, I just checked some tickets from Cincinnati to SFO. From mid May to mid June, the price goes up $60.
[/quote]

Also, what about the people that have to fly to both cons and hotel costs?  It's still a near $1000 vacation

Oof...   :-\   Is there a particular reason why we're not considering a rotating annual meetup?  I know it would cause some people to not be able to make it every year, but it would at least allow us to get the largest number of geekhackers together at a given time.  (?)

Keycon-Keycon-Keycon....I'm gonna not think that Keycons are an Mkawa ploy to test and refine his "keyboard mind control machine" on the masses like Kool-Aide on culties. That being said, and my being in Silicon Valley (down the road from Sammy-Kois place) I may be persuaded into creating a hostel-like environment for wayward geekers. Could prolly set up 4 geeks on air mattresses. I'll be partaking in all geeker activities so a lot of transpo can be covered as well, my truck hauls 6 bodies.

So all you girl-geeks feel free to reserve your spot ASAP before it's gone!

Even if it comes with a beard, broad shoulders and other man things.

Might be an idea to use this thread to collect preliminary info used to finalize the locations/dates of both Keycons so geeks can make decisions. A shared spreadsheet of weekend dates would be good, geeks could enter username and block dates can't go...just babbling. Also, I'd consider doing a Midwest/fall Keycon even though I'm in the Bay Area and will do the NorCal Keycon. It's important to me to meet other geekers and contribute to our "thing". That's one reason I'd open up my place for some of you to stay (reduce your cost, make it more fun/interesting, etc).

Hmm, it's close to me...how many keyboards should I bring...
Might have to merge the Kiibohd meetup for that month in with this :D

By then I should have my force curve gauge finalized (if someone helps I might be able to bring it...it's sorta *HEAVY*).
Should have some prototype switches ready too.

On a semi-unrelated note I'll be doing a rare keyboards presentation for (people at) Evernote in March. They like their mech keyboards :D

Pinball - confirmed.
Pool Table - confirmed.
Gaming PC with Steam and projector in conference room - confirmed.
Go-Karts - confirmed, but not running, and not really a safe parking lot any more.  :'(

This event must be on a weekend -- there is an actual company infesting the premises during the week.

i think i'm going to call the west coast for late june, right after all the UCs get out. april is too soon for people to make plans, and most people seem to be asking for summer cons.

for the most part, i think people who go to both conventions are in the minority; most people will be choosing one anyway, so i think having them a couple months apart is going to build excitement rather than make it more difficult for people to attend.

as far as streaming the con is concerned, YES. in fact, i need to meet justin and co. anyway. i'd love to get multiple cameras on twitch.tv for people to watch; one roving cam doing candids and another focused on the organized presentations.

Just make sure that someone pays attention to the stream. Last time it was forgotten at times and left pointing into nothing. Being able to notify from the irc would be nice in such cases, something which would be possible if the sound is left on and high.

I am looking at the second to last weekend in June and the last weekend in June. Actually, the second to last weekend in June might be graduation time for people on quarter systems, so please speak up on these possibilities.

so far:

1) definitely a full weekend, saturday AND sunday this time, with longer days and a dinner on Saturday

2) Lots of vendor presence! Vendors in particular are invited to speak up dates that work or don't work for them

3) I will be working with a couple people to see if we can grab a small hotel block.

thanks folks!

There's your coast answer.

As for KEYCON timing...
July is pimp. EGG-zacktleee what we need is a mid-summer bump, am I right?

Yea, I got space for some geeks, it'll be pretty easy, maybe 20 mins from Sams…(proposed KEYCON location), I'm right next to SJO, and several major freeways, 45 mins to downtown SF, 35 mins to Santa Cruz (beach), and O mins to fun, got a grill, and a truck to haul 5 additional geeks. Options may exist.

Or, and this might sound crazy, we could not have two major cons within 2 months of each other.  What other con does that?

The midwest has this really cool time period called "Fall" or "Autumn" as well. :P

Also, since it's indoors, does it really matter if it's cold outside? Heavy snow and ice I understand. But this means we should have up until October/November yes?

Trade/business conventions trade shows often do that with weather in mind. They will have meetings in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Miami in the winter and Chicago, Boston, Seattle in the summer, avoiding the poorest weather conditions and natural disaster time frames.

A solid consideration if this is to grow to he next level, as well as planning a year in advance.

other trade shows in the same place at the same time make it very hard to run our little convention. we want to be counter-seasonal right now. a winter east coast keycon would be very cold but probably cheaper.

Yay, decided dates it seems.

I'll bring lots of keyboards as usual. I can do presentations on lots of different things: keyboard archaeology, protocol converters, force curves (might even have v2 of my force curve gauge ready by then), etc.
Depending on how many keyboards people want me to bring, I'll need *lots* of tables.

I have a GoPro 3 Black Edition kicking around...probably could use that for streaming.

See? Dreams can come true

the head cam would be amazing hahahaha xD

Anyone in the NY/NJ area planning on going? I'm thinking about it, but It would be nice to travel with someone else. Travelling alone is boring.

This is why it is important to have imaginary friends, even deep into adulthood.

True. ;D
I'm seeing If I can get a few of my IRL friends to come with me. None of them are particularly interested in keyboards, but they can do something else the two days I'm at keycon.

$600 for me to fly to san jose directly from Toronto (costs more if I go to Buffalo first lol)

Dunno if I can budget for that since I'm going to PAX later.

Ohh no.  My wife came to Keycon 2013 and even though she isn't a keyboard geek, she had a surprising amount of fun.

There will a KeyCon 2014 in the Midwest....in the early stages of planning.

Hopefully the Chicagoland Keycon will still happen in the fall. If not, I think I'm going to try and do an NYC meetup (maybe) and a Nashville meetup (definitely, more of a matter of when, not if) as well. And I think HoffmanMyster is doing a post-graduation GH roadtrip :D.

Hmm. This is an intriguing idea.  But the trip will take a minimum of 31 hours (from Chicago), according to google maps, and that would mean people would almost certainly have to take off work and whatnot.  So for me that means I'm out of that idea, and will have to fly most likely.

fyi, tickets from norcal to disneyland are actually really cheap. flying SJO or OAK into john wayne is basically door to door and flying into john wayne is generally cheap as chips.

another option if you have a whole family to cart down is to rent a van and drive. it's about a 7 hour drive from san jose to anaheim. again, you can fly directly out of john wayne back home; no need to drive back up to norcal or even up to LAX

FOLKS!

i've been talking with boilermaker about scheduling and other issues surrounding boilermaker, and he has two major complicating (but very happy!!) issues. the first is that boilermaker is expecting his first child this fall WOOHOO!

the second is that it's going to be way too close to keycon west.

unfortunately that means we're going to have to cancel keycon chicago this year. expect it to run Spring 2015 instead.

anyway, back to the shorty! please join me in congratulating boilermaker and his wife on their incoming first child! yaaaaa!!!!

I hear you there CPT.  Granted I drove myself last year but I brought my entire PC.  Case, moniter, keyboard, modded orbweaver, and mouse.  Though in my defense that was the only way to really show off the mods I did to the keyboard.

When I got out of the service, the Navy had a service pack up all my stuff to move for me.  They didn't touch any of my electronics.  I moved that all myself from FL to IA.  Including both PC's all the home entertainment components, and the TV.

Title: Re: KEYCON WEST 2014!

a trade show is typically defined as a showing or convention for members of the trade, so i'm not sure what you're referring to.

the thread is here right now because we don't have an events subforum, and the convention _is_ being put on by Geekhackers.org and 724support.com

it's not in off-topic because a) it's not off-topic and b) i prefer that it not be competing with threads such as "climate change: fact or fiction?".

Last few meets were just us hanging out, playing keyboards, and a bit of selling. I know I've bought some things at the last official Keycon (TechKeys business card and a keycap set). But there hasn't been a huge vendor presence...yet. I think tjcaustin is going to sell cables if he's going.

We also had some presentations last year. I might be giving one on machining metals 101 or injection molding 101 depending on interest.

I bought my plane tickets finally. The pricing and timing didn't work out so I couldn't sneak in any extra days to hang out in SF :(. Will be flying in Friday 7/11 night and leaving early Monday 7/14 morning.

....and I may have found some places to buy some fountain pens at so if anyone wants fountain pens and ice cream let me know. Wait this is something about keyboards too right? :P

So the real question is, for those who are traveling in, what keyboards do we bring? I can't bring more than 2 I don't think :(.

So if you don't bring your KingSaver that's actually okay. I can bring a KingSaver for everyone to try but it will be salmon not blue Alps. I also got my DC-2014 today so there will be something with blue Alps at the meetup. Has anyone seen whether Jacobolus is coming? He and I should bring complementary Alps stuff so we don't have too many dupes. :D

I’ll definitely come. I’m not sure what I’ll bring though. Most of the Alps keyboards I grabbed in the last few months have had their switches desoldered, so maybe I’ll just make some kind of switch-try thingy.

it will be a "hey, come on over folks!" event. if we do extra-curricular stuff (museum treks, etc) involving van rentals or anything else complicated, you may be asked to pitch-in. otherwise, just come on over and soak in the keyboards and espresso.

as cptbadass clarified in the OP, THIS IS NOT A LARGE CONVECTION IN THE STYLE OF PAX, CES, WHATEVER. this is a relatively small gathering of friends and family from the geekhack community with keyboards, fun etc. there are no tickets. very little organization and a big focus on building friendly bonds with people you've only met on the internet.

further, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CONTACT 724support.com ABOUT THIS. inquiries should go through me. i am coordinating with samwisekoi, who is donating use of his office for the fun and presentations, but that is the extend of 724support's support of this event. ron will be hanging out with us, of course RON YOU ARE HANGING OUT WITH US, but again, 724support is a real, extremely busy business that other than office space for the weekend, is not involved in organization. thanks everyone

In addition to this Melvang X CBA collabo, and something else I'm working on for Keycon, would anyone be interested in Keycon t-shirts? I'm thinking one of the GH logos on the front, and "Keycon 2014" in special elite on the back. Since I'm making and wearing one, I would like to print them on American Apparel. I've got some places here in Cincinnati to print shirts at but the questions is, should I even bother?

Oh, and black shirt with orange font.

i'm pretty swamped, but if you can talk to them and ask whether it would be easier to go through AA in LA, even just for delivery (everything is made downtown) and help coordinate, that would be awesome. i am pretty much swamped until keycon itself, but if everything were arranged, i could make a run to grab stuff and get them to a printshop. there is one particularly local to me on sawtelle. i think they do the giant robot shirts actually.

I'm proud to announce some collabos for Keycon that I've been working on.

HP x CBA - Stickers

HipsterPunks was kind enough to donate his artistic stylings and time to this project. I'm going to run these and either SPE or the Keycon logofrom my T shirt buy (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59117.0) as stickers to give out.

Melvang x CBA - Keycap pullers

I've commissioned Melvang to make keycap pullers for Keycon. I'll be giving them away there. Melvang was kind enough to donate his knot typing skills and work on this giveaway project with me.

These guys deserve way more credit than I do for all the work they've done. Thank you guys.

I'll also have some keycaps to give away including a Turtle Power keycap set.

The first prototype puller has been sent to CBA.  They will be dressed up a touch with no exposed melted ends of the cordage.  Each one is close to 35 feet of cord and 3 to 4 hours worth of work.  Each one has 2 different decorative knots and 2 different hitchings.

I challenge anyone to name either of the hitchings or the knot used.

Looks like I'll be going now! At first I couldn't, 'cause my work wouldn't let me take time off that weekend.

But like a real GHer, I quit my job to free up time.

Now that my priorities are straightened out, I'll see you there! Maybe I'll even be able to give a talk on hall effect or something.

LOL I love this post.

Sorry if this is redundant, but what time is the action planned to start on July 12?  I am considering catching a morning flight for that Saturday.

From the OP. "You don't actually need convention tickets or anything so no need to contact 724support.com. This is the thread that has all the information. All you need to do is to show up on 7/12-7/13 at the time that will be posted here soon."

Unless there has been anything new...

I'll also have some keycaps to give away including a Turtle Power keycap set.

yeah... I'm going to need that on a shirt...

To be fair, we could do something somewhat similar on the cheap with a white sheet and outside, assuming it isn't overcast.  Then, depending on how that turns out, we can touch up and polish in lightroom (which I have a copy of on my mac mini).

Just a few. The nature of this type of thing is preorder. The moment you are stuck with 1 extra shirt, the process starts to suck and become a chore. Any shirts at Keycon need to sell a couple dollars higher (not cheaper, saving on shipping) since CAPTBadAss is lugging them around the country. Remember that.

If you want a shirt, order now.

SJC is physically closer to Mountain View, SFO is closer by transit convenience.

SJO is much closer to the venue. if you come in to SFO, you'll need to take two trains down to mountain view or your hotel; you'll bart to milpitas, and from there you have to take caltrain down to mountain view.

Bring whatever you like lol. I'm pretty sure you're a grown person and can make a decision. There's never been any "rules" as to what you should bring. I can only bring what can fit in my carryon baggage so I'm probably only bringing my Kingsaver and KMAC. Maybe the Zero if I get it fixed up.

I've never seen the Orion so that would be cool to see.

No worries! Just bring whatever you like. Bring something cool to show off, or something rare for everyone to try, or just whatever keyboard is closest to hand. I've never gone either, but you really can't go wrong here.

Ideally, people just bring anything and everything they have. That's my favorite part about meetups. I get to try a *ton* of different keyboards. From WASD to 456GTs.

I don't think you'd embarass yourself unless you brought a Dell Rubberdome :)). And even then, Sifo brought a DT35 last year which was amazing.

I don't think it's ravioli.  I think that's all part of a larger ruse to mislead us.  I think it's really a more traditional pasta, perhaps a penne?

I had a delicious pasta yesterday, it was sooo goood.  Maybe I'll make spaghetti tonight for dinner...

dude, if you like cheese and bread, zachary's is it. there is no contest outside of chicago.

for friday night i'm thinking zachary's, which is a classic bay area take on deep dish pizza.

another option is cheeseboard in berkeley.

I'm not a huge fan of Cheeseboard Pizza. It's always packed with a line halfway down the block, and the seating is not great for groups. I've been there a couple times and didn't really think it was worth the wait. I mean, it's good pizza with quality ingredients, but there are other places around the bay that make good pizza with quality ingredients, offers table service, and has more than one pizza option a day. I also vote Zachary's.

Assuming most people are staying in the south bay, isn't that kind of a far drive for dinner though? Not that I'm complaining since I live right next to Berkeley.  :P

the trick with friday night is that john is taking some people who are staying in the south bay on a tour in emeryville on friday afternoon, and i'm going to be in the east bay visiting family on friday. the hope is that those who are staying in the south bay can get into the east bay in the early afternoon, tag along with john, and then whoever's in the EB can stay there for dinner rather than having to face 101 traffic south.

i'm also not a huge fan of cheeseboard, but some people can't handle zachary's ;)

I like this plan. c:

And believe it or not, Zachary's does have thin crust pizzas! One of my friends hates deep dish but insists on going there just for the thin crust.

I've actually had Zachary's before as well.  Super tasty.  Lanesplitters is good too for thinner NY-style pizza.

..annnnd commence arguing about Chicago vs. NY style

Neither.  Chicago is too thick (I'll take my cheese in curd form, thank you) and NY is too thin.

Done.

haha YES! Zach's deepdish FTW, oh man, I miss it so much.

*edit

If you guys are looking for the best burrito you ever had, Gordo's is on the same street as Zachary's.

There are two things I miss in the Bay Area, Zachary's Pizza and Gordo's Burritos!

NY style til I die. Chicago is delicious but nothing beats a slice from NY. Every time I'm home, I get pizza, rolls, and garlic knots from the local pizza shop.

Ugh...I wish I was coming into the Bay Area sooner :(. We better be eating good when I come through!

Also for everyone who's going to the big dinners over the weekend. BRING CASH FOR YOUR MEALS. It'll make life far far easier.

I have a 17" Mac Pro that will push up to a 30" display at 2560x1600. Dunno if that helps.
I'm doing my part, so whose bringing the 30" display?

You guys are talking major food Fri aft/night. I'm coming back home (San Jose) sometime Friday afternoon (I work out of town all week), I'm meeting some GHers staying with me, and picking up a late night arrival at SFO... But wouldn't mind hooking up,with some of you if time/logistics allows.

I like cheeseboard but Zachary's is an institution. Around here we prefer Hi-Life to either anyway :P

I'll be off work and back in downtown Oakland around 5 on Friday, where are we meeting or should I just text you?

i'm not sure which location will have enough space for us and will take a reservation. zach's on solano is barely big enough _in total_ for all of us. zach's on college might be a better bet. i'll make some calls and see which location would best fit us.

ok that makes 6 so far, which is pushing it for zachary's on solano, but not impossible for zach's on college. i can make opentable reservations for little star, which might be the best way to go. i'll check this again tomorrow morning on the road @ 10am or so, and if we need reservations, i'll make them at little star by 12-2pm or so and update everyone on the timeslot i grabbed.

Nevermind, saw the other thread, seems to be East Bay.
