Title: Leopold Step Sculpture 2 vs Cherry Profile *** UPDATED ***
Post by: Hyde on Wed, 16 September 2015, 19:30:22
I've heard that Leopold's Step Scupture 2 profile is very similar to Cherry profile.

Has anyone actually compare them yet?

I find it weird because I actually don't like Cherry profile but I kind of don't mind Leopold's Step Sculpture 2.

Anyone has any insight to this?

EDIT:  Scroll down for comparison pics.

165 views and no one has anything to say?

Maybe this weekend I'll bust out both of my keycap sets and take some pictures and we'll go from there.  :P

I haven't used them side by side, I assumed they were practically the same.

But I do really like the Leopold caps.

The leopold caps are nice but I still prefer cherry profile. The textured surface and relatively short cap makes my typing less accurate.

I have both, but I'm not sure on the exact differences. I'd imagine there are relatively small differences between the two.

I like both so...

Leopold's being too textured? Leopold's are smoother than most, unless their old PBT was rougher than their current sets.

At least the one on my fc660m is. Definitely more textured than HHKB's caps.

Leopold's texture is rougher than Cherry, the profile is very close in curvature, but the top row of the 60% area is a little bit lower than Cherry.

The feeling is very good in general, but I really prefer Cherry.

The new Leopold PBTs are rougher than BSP, I don't have OG Cherry Dyesubs to compare to and I assume that or BSP are what you are referring to.
At the same time though they are smoother than almost any other PBT sets I've tried, the only one close to equal is Gateron.

At least the one on my fc660m is. Definitely more textured than HHKB's caps.
Don't have any Topre keycaps/boards so I can't say if the newer PBT is smoother than PFU/Realforce.

So I finally had the time to take some pictures and to do comparison.

Good news is that now I have pretty comparison pictures.  Bad news is that the keycap which I thought should be Leopold's Step Sculpture profile turned out to be OEM profile.  :(

As it turns out, it's unfortunate that I still don't have any keyboard with Leopold profile.

Archiss Progres Touch Retro are meant to be rebrand of Leopold FC900R.

So I'd assume they'll be Leopold's profile, but I guess maybe the company that already had the mold in OEM so probably too expensive to make new mold for Leopold.  So most likely Leopold FC900R dobule shot version will also have OEM profile.

Most of the OEM keycaps are almost the same, except Tai Hao bottom 3 row are a bit more different.

In any case here are the pics:

Here is the setup that I used LOL:

The pictures are awesome and the work invested was huge, thank you very much. However, there is a new Leopold profile that is found in the FC660C between others, called Sculpture 2. I already sold my keyboard and its set, but the profile is close to Cherry and nothing like OEM.

This is an image from Elite Keyboards with those caps on an FC.

Heyyyyy thanks for the comment.  :D

Yes I'm aware of it, I was hoping my Archiss would be in that step sculpture 2 profile.  Then I was going to do an OEM vs Step Sculpture 2 vs Cherry comparison.

Oh well maybe next time I obtain keycaps with actual Step Scupture 2 profile I'll do this shoot again lol.

I don't have any pics or exact measurements now but I do have a set that I believe is step culture 2: a set of side-printed Varmilos. They're definitely much closer to Cherry profile than OEM as you said. I'd be fairly comfortable mixing caps from them and Cherry sets on same rows as the differences are small enough at least when it comes to visible row height.
