First time group buy runner here and now that school is done I'm going to push to setup and complete the group buy in a quick turnaround.
I still have a few details to hammer out with Greatfirewall but I believe most of it is hammered down so far.
There's one unfortunate problem, I didn't manage to build it yesterday since I forgot the PCB mount stabilizers when I went to visit Nathan. So right now it's still not built.
So what exactly is the Golbat?
The Golbat is a 40% keyboard that has an adjustable bottom row. This means that you can desolder and resolder in the way that you like. Here are some examples of how Greatfirewall, Ryu have setup their own Golbat:

The case is 4 layers. Top and bottom layers are aluminum and the middle layers are acrylic.
The colors available are the following:

So this gives a really wide availability of colors for your color matching OCD.
The PCB comes with the diodes and resistors soldered on so the only thing left for you to buy is switches, LEDs, stabilizers.

One part of the acrylic goes above the PCB and the other below the PCB.
If you have any other questions regarding the keyboard itself, let me know and I'll either answer them or forward them to GFW.
Of course I haven't programmed my PCB yet since it's not built but I'll have it built before I start the GB. This is purely the IC.
The aim for the group buy is 20 units with each unit being about 1KG for shipping.
The units will be produced by the friend of GFW in China and shipped to me.
The standard Golbat 40% set will cost $80USD + fees and shipping.
For an extra $15 the HHKB plate will be included (so you'll get both the standard plate and the HHKB style plate). This is $95USD + fees and shipping.
Shipping it being done from Quebec, Canada and should be $12-17USD anywhere in Canada with insurance for $200 CDN.
To ship to the USA the price is $15-20USD including insurance for $100CDN. (It's a big jump for the extra insurance).
The range is because Canada Post doesn't have flat rate boxes and is all dependent on the distance. British Columbia is more expensive than Ontario to ship to. Some ZIP codes in the USA are more expensive but in general it's $15.
Anodized bolts: Before people ask, unfortunately GFW can't source them for the GB so they'll be plain grey.

It'd force some an awkward spacebar size- probably 5u or 4.75u, both absurdly difficult sizes to find. You could always map the rightmost key to Alt, anyway.

The options of the acrylic are crazy, it'll take me forever to choose. I'll be doing vintage blacks since I have bags laying around. What switches you using?
Although I'd like to grab nature whites if I could. Zealio purple would be tempting, price is a bit much but at 40% maybe!

Yea. The regular layout board is available on taobao but shipping and proxying can be expensive. There's really not much of a deal on the kit itself but GFW said that the HHKB-style plate would only be available when buying in 5+ so that, along with the diluted proxy and shipping costs, is what makes this buy more interesting than just buying directly. If you just want the PCB it would be definitely faster to just order it yourself.
Definitely in for one. Can't have too many 40% boards.

There are over 100 responses to the IC form now so I'm going to see with GFW if it will be possible to extend the number of units for this. (Or do multiple rounds to avoid having $10000 caught up in one order and being at high risk)

Just to confirm, the PCB probably doesn't support SMD LEDs, does it? So if we wanted underlighting we'd have to just use regular 2-pin flipped downward?
No it doesn't, there are only holes for in-switch LEDs.
Now with that said, I hung out with GL1TCH3D and we semi-tested out this theory. I heard the guys on the Boardmakers podcast say they soldered SMD LEDs onto the bottom of the PCB on the in-switch holes. Seems that the comonents do line up nicely but it is a less than ideal solder job.
We put in 1.8mm leds upside down in the in-swith hole up there is not enough space to close up the case with them in place - the case really is that tight of a fit! Laying some 3mm x 2mm x 1mm down sideways (so the 1mm is the height) seemed to work, but it would leave some exposed wiring inside the bottom of the case. You can see this post in the "post your 40%" thread where some work has been done to actually achieve this. Remember, if you go for in-switch AND this method it is going to draw more current so the LEDs will be dimmer.

The issue: the website GFW gave me to build the firmware doesn't work so I may have to setup TMK to do it which would be a huge hassle =[

Blue doesn't work that well when passing through orange acrylic but it's very visible for the bottom half of the acrylic plate.
I will also consider taking on soldering jobs if there's a decent amount of interest for me to get my own soldering iron (instead of constantly borrowing one) which means I would also have to order switches too for those who want it soldered. Anyway, that's another story.
I got detailed instructions from GFW about creating the firmware without TMK so I'll try that this weekend and hopefully have the GB running next week with payment collection by the 21st of January.

I think there is a typo in the GB thread. I'm 99% sure that you need a normal 6.25u stab for the full sized spacebar - joining the sizes 3 keys that replace it in the 'split' layout makes exactly 6.25u.
