Title: [GB] SA 1965 (Complete)
Post by: jchan94 on Thu, 01 December 2016, 17:49:12
Hey everyone,
In collaboration with our very own render genius, thesiscamper, we're happy to announce the release of SA 1965; a Beatles inspired set. He's worked very hard to lay the ground floor for this, and now we're finally ready to show it all off. Over the past few months, you've seen renders of it shown off here and there, so I hope you're ready for it to become reality. All colors are custom to be matched with pantone.

The international China/Singapore GB is organized by kingnestea. The novelties were designed by /u/thesiscamper himself & Keyclack Inc.

Get yours here & make sure to read the details on the product page itself.

Good luck, your numbers are looking really good so far. I might pick up the alphas, they would look really nice with Chocolatier as the white chocolate kit never happened.

Will be in by Dec 13 I guess... I wanna see how it works out for the MOQ for the sets I am interested in

Are refunds transactional? I am only interested if ISO happens, and don't want the rest of stuff if it doesn't happen. Will the whole order get refunded?

Also, is it too late to have an all-brown F1-F12 stripe?

If a kit does not make the MoQ, we will email all participants and ask if they want a refund for that 1 kit, or the whole order to opt out.

I'll talk it over and see if we can include it at the 200 Alpha break point, which looks like we're approaching.

Ivan confirmed?

I also noticed that the dark RETURN key from the 40s pack is R4. Aren't they normally row 3? Is the R4 RETURN a 40% thing or is it misplaced?

It's for the MiniVan.

Still very important info considering a lot of people want a brown return key for the alpha/tkl set and the responses to that are generally "theres one in the 40s kit" , at least now more people will know that wouldn't work that well.

edit: I was one of the ones saying I'd be in if it had a brown return standard, and I really wish it did. But I will still probably get in when the alphas hit their final MOQ, since i love the brown/cream colorway for this. Really hoping someone can get GB for some extra modifiers/novelties going for this after to include a brown return and some coffeeish novelties (since coffee v3 won't be out for at least a year)

Maybe a brown one will be added in a mini color pack, we're considering it... but nothing is final except what you see in the kit mock-ups.

Yea sorry just edited my post right before you replied. I was thinking you guys could do a mini pack gb after this or something. I love the colorway and think it'd look great with some coffee novelties, think you'd attract a good amount of attention since coffee v2 was awhile ago and all thats been confirmed for coffee v3 is that it's at least one full year away.

No problem man, of course we want to accommodate requests as much as possible, but price and MOQ gets in the way. We have already discussed a mini kit early on, but considering several people already joined with the current design I believe we made the right choice, and it is what I intended for the set, a red return key.

I assure you we (jchan, me et al) will discuss this again before the buy ends.

I remember, we fixed the row numbering and there shouldn't be an R1. Jchan is still waiting for quotes from Melissa before updating the mock-ups, but here it is.

So I'm having trouble finding references to how the color scheme was done. Is there a flyer or something that this was modeled after, similar to how 1976 was?

One last question about this set then i'll stop bothering you guys. Did SP/SA ever give you any reasoning for the high prices on this kit? For an MOQ of 100 its: $111 for alphas and tkl kit on here , SA dancer/dasher is able to get a tkl kit (which for them includes alphas) at $76 .  I could see some discrepancy in pricing, but what was the $35 swing for ?  Our highest MOQ doesnt even go down to that. If it's on there end I think you guys should do some haggling and show them those facts and how good your numbers are right now.

Hi will the prices be updated later since most of the kits has hit MOQ because I rather not deal with refunds with my bank, I have issues with them with regards to refunds

I'm not part of the drop team, but IIRC, the high price is due to the custom pantone-matched colors (which is why you don't see SP color codes listed) and the custom molds for the novelties. I don't think Dasher currently has either of these.

The set may be a little too retro for me (I'm usually more into vibrancy than muted brown/whites), though I am still pondering buying in, I just wanted to say your renders are getting eerie at this point Camper - they are just frighteningly good, I have no idea how you do what you do but please continue to put your work out there, it's incredible.

Makes sense that's still a high price raise on their part, could see it being half of that but damn.

It looks like the TKL mods, numpad and novelties are all approaching/have passed the next price drop. Is the price able to come down more because of the higher volume of sales?

I loved this set the first I saw it and the more I look at it the more I like it!! I will definitely be in on this!!

Looks like the 40s kit has been updated with a red novelty return, an ivory and brown  |\ key and an R4 Shift key (looks like 1.75u or 2u). Any plans for some similar adjustments to the Nonstandard kit? Saaaay a brown return key and esc key??? Spent a lot of time looking at this and was thinking that an option pack for red F1-F4 & F9-F12 would be a cool addition as well. Or even red RPT, SCRLK, PAUSE.  I know it's late in the game but thought toss the idea out there. Wasn't there talk also of an additional TKL Drop at MOQ 150?

(ps: In the MOQ listing of your op the "40s" is bold'ed but not yellow'ed)

We won't be adding the extra keys you've asked for. The set was intended to be as such and we want to respect the designer, Thesiscamper. The accents plays very nicely IMO.

Sad to hear that but oh well, don't think I'll be jumping on this one unless SP allows another MOQ price drop tier. Going to save my money and invest in one of your other group buys, and maybe try and grab an extra set of SA camper when it comes around in feb/march

Would it by any chance be possible to get an option for e.g. 1 or 4 blank light-colored R1 caps for the keyboards that has media buttons above numpad (or media buttons for that matter)
Ergodox kit has some R1 blanks, but it's kinda a lot to pay for an entire ergodox kits for a couple of blanks. Besides, light colored ones would go better with the general layout...

I'm new to a GB in keyclack, most of the time I've spent a lot in MD. I've got several question to ask:

1. When will this GB end?
2. In MD, payment will be charged after the GB deadline end. Will keyclack do the same? or,
3. Payment will be charged right after we checkout? Means if prices get lower due to MOQ achieved after we pay, we lost the opportunity to get that lower price.

Thank you

Briefly considered the idea of buying up any remaining ISO kits to hit the MOQ, but I don't have $650 to do that. Joining anyway (just in case) once I'm on my own PC after work.

So sad seeing this dream set slip away.

Also, is it too late to have an all-brown F1-F12 stripe?
I'll talk it over and see if we can include it at the 200 Alpha break point, which looks like we're approaching.

Is it still likely? Inverted F-row would make the whole board look like a yellow submarine:

Also any chance of making novelty rings to be of equal thickness:

Thanks!

No offence but including alternate F-Row kits in the base kit is BS in my opinion. Alternate colour F-rows is a way more obscure request than standard colour RETURN and ESC, common to most sets with alternate colours for those keys, the RETURN and ESC key thing was already brought up way early in the group buy.

I'm not trying to dictate the artistic direction for this set as I know the idea of brown enter and esc keys was vetoed by the designers but I AM paying money for the set and I and several other voiced a desire to have the standard brown colour for those keys, so why is it such a big deal to allow them? Having some other random request added to the base keyset instead of being included in a child kit for other specific layout needs without any kind of vote is lame.

I kinda second this, as much as I like the option for brown or red F keys as well.

Also just hoping the 40s make MOQ :(

We're going to adjust the ring thickness to make them more consistent, thank you for pointing it out.

We do plan to include the brown return and esc keys now, but not the f-row keys because that's a lot of keys. Maybe a small additional pack next time with brown f-keys and numpad keys.

What is the ISO kit number at the moment? Taobao is not likely to improve it and it's already evening here in Europe... and then the GB will be over by early morning. Crossing fingers for a UK-themed keyset to have UK keycaps!

I'm also really hoping for the ISO kit to make it. If it's really close to the minimum, I might even consider getting an additional one.

ISO, ERGO will not go through. I've already emailed the participants as we are less than half way to the MoQ.

40s is going forward however.

Updated numbers soon as we are closing the GBs and need to fix all these current orders with failed kits.

Why prices are now $68? Why not $48 as it says there on website?

Why ISO is out of stock?

With our initial date ending on Dec 14, we had less than half of the ISO moq for the pricing. I have since then, taken it out because there are essentially none being bought on an international scale. Ergodox as well.

Refunds @ the end for the pricing mate as it has been stated a few times.

More tickets to do tonight, and I still have to do refunds later this week (after XMAS at this rate).

For those who are wondering, we've added 2 keys to the TKL set. 1x Brown Return + 1x Brown ESC.

Lastly, I didn't put it here, but one lucky person will win this lego set with their order:

Refunds are starting to roll out this week.

I've calculated all of the totals needed to be refunded to each order already and just need to spend a day refunding them to individual orders.

I will send out a mass email to all participants to check the order total of their orders to see the properly reflected amount.

My only remorse is not getting more kits. I was simply envisioning putting this on a standard full size keyboard. Now I'm thinking I'd like to put it on either the M65-A or possibly a WKL TKL board, but I'll be missing a few bottom row keys for both and a 1.75u right shift. Who knows? Maybe I can score some keys that someone else doesn't need after this ships.

We'll have extras for all the kits when it comes around, but it seems that SP is delayed "again".

I'll have to confirm the date with SP again.

Also, to note, we'll be adding all our previous buys onto the new site as "inactive" or "outdated" buys. The buys will be up there as archival information, and will be used for updates. Following that, I'll be adding everyone to a specific product mailing list so people can keep up with the updates via email, therefore streamlining the flow of information.

Thanks guys, I will now try to get updates firsthand from Melissa since jchan is having some issues, and hopefully they will all be resolved when 1965 ships... or at least mostly resolved.

Looks like the legends got a little bigger,  and went from 1965 to '65. Looking good! Now just hope this means we're close!

Yes, I had to make these adjustments to account for SP's tooling, especially the "1965" novelty. The original would've looked bad since it had pointed serifs that had to be rounded.

edit:
Made some minor tweaks again.

Trying to decide if I want a black or silver case for this.
Has anyone ever made cases with chocolate or coffee colored anodization?

Been lurking this thread for nearly a year after joining the GB and finally decided to join the forums.

Not exactly anodized, but this is the case I decided to pair with this set: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/filco/images/kobo/woodred/08.jpg
It's one of the Kobo frames available for Filcos called "Classic Wood Brown" - it's Japanese style hand-lacquered finish made with dripping pigment to get the burl-wood effect... it's gorgeous. They also have some other color / finish options that might go well with the set.

There are actual wood cases available for some boards on occasion, but I'm not sure anyone sells them consistently. Those are usually limited to small form-factor boards.

I know brown anodizing is possible, but I haven't seen it on a keyboard yet, though you could get a bare-finish aluminum case and have it powder-coated pretty much any color you like.

Ahh excellent I'll look into that.  Already planning a wood and brass build for nautilus so didn't want to do wood again.  Love filcos!

I will be selling mine as I now type dvorak and there was no kit for it. So if you're after alphas, tkl, and novelties, let me know.

Hi all.

So I probably shouldn't have said anything here, as a lot of people have been asking me about the kits and what I plan on doing with them.

Short answer:
I don't really know.

Long answer:
When the set arrives, the first thing I intend on doing is posting to /mechmarket looking to trade for a Dasher set with Dvorak. I predict this to be extremely unlikely to actually be successful, and should it not be, I will then sell the kits as a full set. This is because I have already received requests for it, so it will just be easier for me to do it that way.

As for price, I have no idea. In past transactions on /mechmarket, I have always charged what I paid for a particular item be it new or from a trade, and in some cases given things away for free. However, I have never dealt with a brand new SA set that I have personally waited +10 months to receive. This is unknown territory for me and I haven't figured out how I'm going to approach it.
Obviously on a moral level, I want to charge what I paid. But on the other hand if other sellers establish a price that appears to be agreed upon by the buying community, do I have a right to do the same?

Please feel free to offer words of advice, as I am quite stuck. I don't want to blatantly profit off of jchan's work, but if this set does indeed hold a higher market value, am I then disadvantaging myself by not doing the same? Or am I still just an a-hole for doing it?

I say charge what other people are willing to pay for. On that note, I believe jchan has extras so if you're looking to sell them quickly you'll have to match his retail price, at least until his stocks run out. I don't think morals should be a great concern, when we're talking about people buying plastic they don't really need.

Agreed, this set is being produced on demand. You helped more of it to exist, charge whatever you are comfortable with. Buying something that was limited in available numbers (e.g. Artisans or limited keebs) to flip is what I believe most people despise, but not buying and reselling unlimited keysets.

Here are the photos. I took a few more, but these BEST REPRESENT the colors of the set.

Now, I want to make sure there is little - no confusion on the colors of the set because I understand 1st impressions.

Originally, the set was rendered out as a "red" accent, but after much talks with Thesiscamper, we agreed that the color was misrepresented in the original renders, and the orange-red is more accurate to the original inspiration in which this set was drawn from.

Lastly, here are my personal notes about the set. The alphas are a beautiful yellow, and match amazingly with the dark brown mods. The Orange, while I personally wish was a tad more red, is beautiful and accents the set surprisingly well.

And one last note: you will receive an email with your unique tracking from no-reply@keyclack.com ; this email is NOT monitored. So please do not reply to it.

Shipping commences next week as it was a little unexpected for this to arrive.

Here are the well-anticipated photos.

Am I the only one not happy about this?

That ivory is spot on, the brown is spot on, they look really nice. Not too thrilled with the orange though, pretty disappointing actually and it kinda kills the set for me. I much preferred the original reddish color from the original renders, but I was ok with the change to 166-C, but that doesn't even look to match Pantone 166-C, I mean that's like Reese's orange. Were there no samples for approval before final production? I've been so excited for this set and now I'm just kinda sad and irritated.

It is 166-C, and I approved the samples myself. I decided, with jchan, to follow the reference album image colors I initially based the set on.

This is what I decided the set will look like, it is unfortunate that you disagree but I made the best choice for what I wanted the set to be, and we informed everyone of the changes.

It's kinda hard to give a fair representation of colors on computer monitors without a proper calibration workflow - It looks better on my calibrated computer monitors than on my phone, although i also wish they were slightly more redish brown, rather than orange. Hopefully I'll love the colors when I get my hands on the set, looking forward! :thumb:

First, let me apologize. I'm sorry, I should not have questioned whether or not there was approval of samples prior to final production, and was not questioning your vision of what the set should or should not look like. I had a bad day yesterday and should have just kept my mouth shut. Thank you for the clarification on the samples. I know everyone was informed of the change, and I appreciate that, some group buys would not have done that.

I'll eat my words and wait for when the set arrives and I can see it in person.

I do want to say thank you to you and jchan for running a great group buy. Overall the buy has been a pleasurable and well communicated process.

Well apparently it's my monitors that need to be recalibrated or replaced, because they look much closer in that picture. I also started to look at different images of the album used for reference, as well as my own copies, and have noticed a large variance in the colors used in the actual album cover that inspired the set (though this doesn't surprise me and was quite common in older albums that were printed and pressed in multiple locations). Maybe it is a combination of the color grading and lighting in the photo, my monitor needing to be recalibrated, and differences in the many printings of the album cover used as reference that led to my misunderstanding. Regardless, I'm just going to keep my mouth shut from here on and just wait to see it in person.

It's totally understandable especially when it comes to custom colors discussed online. I must admit some of my earlier renders were more red, but as I looked at my reference album image more and more I came to appreciate the "aged" look of the copper/orange color more, and felt it was a better choice.

Another thing to consider is the lighting in my 3D scenes and jchan's photos, most of my renders have one bright light source that casts more shadows and has more contrast, compared to the latest photos that had a more balanced lighting setup. The sample color chip I am holding actually looks a bit darker than the caps in jchan's photos (seen from a Dell IPS monitor). It can be because of the lighting, or my uncalibrated monitor at home and work, or the way I perceive colors.. or maybe all those things.

I hope you change your mind when you receive the set.  :thumb:

The color sample is actually closer to the colors in my monitor, than this next photo suggests. The flash affected the chip, but I'm adding this photo as another comparison.

The album covers themselves IRL vary in color, it's not necessarily because of the way photos were taken or the way monitors are color calibrated. It's actually quite common with older albums from that era. Just like how the vinyl itself was mastered and cut by multiple different engineers, pressed in multiple different pressing plants, the center labels and covers were printed in multiple different print houses. this could lead to slight variations in colors in the covers and labels, as well as fonts used for the labels.

Beatles '65 actually had quite a bit of variation in the colors of the cover over the years (and even within the same pressing runs, as did most of their early albums).   I think I've owned about 6 different color variations of this album, from the ivory background with orange text and red umbrella to grey background with red text and orange umbrella (though sadly, I don't think I actually own a copy right now).

Here is a good example of Meet The Beatles!, both from around the same time, but the green was one of the first 500k, and the brown was after 500k (it has a RIAA Gold Cert. advertising emblem on the cover).

I know the colors vary, that's why I showed what I used in choosing colors.

I've been so stoked for this set since the drop closed, but it's only been in the past week that I really understood what a labor of love 1965 SA has been. Thanks so much to everyone involved in designing the set and handling the logistics of bringing it to the community!

Just realised that ISO kit didn't reach MOQ so I wonder what color the modifiers have. Is it a standard SP color or a custom one? I guess it's darker than the Chocolatier mods?
Guess I have to try to get some blank ISO Enters in that color from SP.

It is a custom color, I'm not sure how close it is to Chocolatier.

Tiny Update.

The boxes all arrived this week, but they mistakenly only gave us 100 vs the 250 (that are needed) to fulfill this.

The boxes are already ordered - we'll getting them on Monday. The 100 or so should be going out tomorrow, thanks!

Here's some of my kits on a Team Ace 40XT for a few test shots.

Sweet caps, totally digging the orangey accent. Really matches the bone colored legends.

JChan, I received my novelties and nonstandard kits today but not my alphas+tkl+numpad.
Since those 3 kits were actually a separate order does that just mean it didn't make the cut for the first 100 sent?

Colors look great! The brown is a perfect charcoal shade, almost looks black unless you really study it.

If you got it separately, then it was part of a cut off order.

You'll get the other one in another shipment since it was another order. Cheers.

Here's a potato pic of my minila with SA Filco.  The entire bottom row is SA 1965 mods except for the TBN spacebar from SP since that and black were the only 3 unit SA spaces I could get a hold o until carbon comes next year.  The 2u shift is the brown key from my Rama M10-A, not sure of the color code.

I would be as well, if it weren't for the fact that customs here in Norway tend to ask me for my social security number to process my package (since i had it shipped to my office and not to my residential address) - which they may or might not do unless i check the tracking and see that it is needed - not doing that tends to delay delivery.

By the way, who's transporting the international packages? USPS?

Anyone else's tracking not updated yet? It's been nine days, and still says USPS is awaiting drop-off.

Ordered on keyclack.com last week but still haven't heard anything.

@jchan94 Can I have a timeline for shipping?

You are not alone. We would’ve received the package by now if it was sent out the same day the label was created  :))

It's been happening, so I wouldn't write it off that he didn't ship it.  USPS doesn't reliably update shipping.  Of course, they also lose packages when they say that they haven't received it yet, so...

Hi everyone,

I've been getting emails about the tracking not working, or being updated.

These packages were already dropped off well over a week ago at this stage.

I've contacted USPS about this already

Tracking finally updated last night.  Left City of Industry distribution center.  Nine days for USPS to even get it on its way out of the state is completely bonkers.

I had the exact same experience... 9 days without even leaving the area?
Seems like USPS is even worse than post here - Usually overseas packages gets here in a couple of days, then spend 3-5 days clearing customs and arriving at the end location...

That's pretty typical of the City of Industry hub. Takes forever to get stuff through there sometimes.

Is there any movement to run just the orange modifiers in the reddish versions?

The cream and brown are exactly as I’d hoped.  I wish the orange had more red mixed in.

Came in today! They look amazing! Sadly, after $60 for shipping, I still had to pay $30 in duty. All told, 1 set of alphas, 1 40s kit, $235.

Shipment cleared Canadian customs yesterday afternoon.  Making the trek across country now.

My sets finally arrived. Sorry for not replying to all the messages about my selling of them, it just became to difficult to coordinate what I was going to do with them before they had even been delivered.

They are now up for sale on mechmarket. https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/7fejwh/au_h_sa_1965_alphas_tkl_novelties_w_paypal/?st=jaf8dsqi&sh=d5cbe467

I got an email where I was told the label is automatically created when the order is made, and that they send the email with tracking when they pack the order.

It's been six days since I got the email, and I'm worried the package has not made it to FedEx, as I assume FedEx would scan the label when they receive it.

I also want to order some BKE domes, but I'm reluctant until I know that this order has been delivered.

My FedEX shipment finally updated today. Status: PICKED UP.  Also got an estimated time of delivery. Shouldn't be long now as I'm the next state up.

Does USPS have tracking for this kind of mail in Norway? I see that my package departed Luxembourg on the 21st... and no news since then :(
<EDIT:> Finally arrived in Norway... time to get excited :)

For future GBs, I wish there would be an option to select other means of transportation than the notoriously slow USPS...

357 days wait... it's finally here! Super happy about it - although I wish the customs-declared value would be the same as I paid, not the pre-discounted price, as that gave me another 15$ unnecessary tax  :'(

Is there any chance of another round being run? It looks like everything is sold out on KeyClack except the novelties & numpad. IMO this is the most attractive keycap set I've ever seen.

There was a stock error, but I'll the TKL/Planck+40s kits back up in July.

What about the Non-Standard kit? Had to cancel my whole order and give up the then in stock non-standard kit due to stock error for the TKL Set, under the advise that all sets will be restocked in June/July.

If there are no plans to bring back the Non-Standard Kit it would seem that I was deceived in giving up my set...

If you email back with the email you got about cancellation, we will set aside the kit for you. You should have also received a mail stating that you can reserve it without any payment, due to the cancellation.

Either way, just look for that mail regarding cancellation due to the Alphas being not available, and we will set aside your original order for you, due to the inconvenience of the miscount in inventory.
