TOXIC CANDY CANES

TRIAL SALE - Thread in Classifieds - ENDED

TRIAL SALE DETAILS ANNOUNCED

FIRST SALE THIS SUNDAY

ORIGINAL POST

A couple of days ago, I posted two photos of some keycaps that my girlfriend had made for me in the ‘Post your keycaps thread’.

We were both so excited to see such positive feedback that we made a few more together (she shared her secrets with me!). Here’s a photo of one of the new ones we made today:

Depending on the level of interest, we are thinking of making some of these available for sale at a special price (as a trial to see what you guys think)!

Let us know if you would be interested or what colours/designs you like or would like to see. At the moment, the keycaps are all MX-compatible. For reference, here is a photo of the ones that were made earlier:

P.S. As modulor correctly identified, the process we used is “dip painting” - instead of applying the medium directly to the cap, the pattern is created first on top of a buffer (such as water) and the cap is dipped into it. This means that for each keycap it’s a one-shot thing, but every cap turns out completely unique.

(I’ve posted this in the keycaps subforum since it’s not an IC for a group buy - I hope it’s in the right place!)

looks good. I'd be interested in a green one.

So these are OEM/FILCO profile then like your other post says correct? That is a bummer then as those are different/taller than SP's keys. Getting a bunch of blanks from SP probably would be a good thing here ;)

We'll definitely be making some green ones soon. :)

Yeah, at the moment they are top row OEM keys just for the trial. We also have a limited number of keys that match top row Cherry profile that we're going to work on next, and we can order other profiles too!

We apply a protective clear coat the day after because we want to make sure the pattern has set and we’ve found it’s a lot easier to photograph the design without the flash reflecting off the gloss!

That’s why our newest keycap, which was only made today, has been photographed without the clear coat. :)

What kind of wear could these caps take?  It would be also interesting if you had a few made with hand painted or stamped legends on the key-cap.  Maybe a G or H would stir some interest.

Coat em in mudddd haha. I'm pretty sure there is protective coating that is non-shiny/glossy out there. Probably matte if anything. Should be put as an option for these if they are going to be sold.

I think that's pretty cheap for what you're asking.  one of a kind demands a premium.

Well, but also need to consider the efforts of making the cap. And to be precise, this is actually more random than specially one of a kind.

If CC's are around $20s, with that kind of effort he is putting in making new keycaps, im sure my price doesnt sound too low.......

EDIT: to answer your previous question, NIQMODS are selling at below $10 for the fruity caps

Thanks for the input Shadovved and metalliqaz. Pricing is always a difficult thing to settle. Maybe a little more about the process might help. :)

How they're made!
We make each key individually as the method doesn't allow for more than one to be made together, unlike spraying or painting.

What we do is drip the different colours to form a very thin skin on the surface of the buffer. A sharp point (like a needle) is used to drag the colours into each other to create the design. At this stage we can actually control exactly what we want the design to look like by manipulating the colours - this is the job for the artist, not me! :)) But if this step isn't done quickly the thin skin can dry out and won't stick properly to the keycap. Sometimes the medium doesn't disperse evenly, which makes for an uneven coating, and so we have to reset the buffer.

What can go wrong?
The keycaps have proved to be difficult to work with because of their odd shape and especially the concave top. Bubbles between the skin and the keys are our main issue, as well as creases or breaks in the skin. One of the hardest parts is having to clean the edges of the keycap while it's submerged and removing all residue from the surface of the buffer, otherwise they will stick to the key and ruin the design.

Every pattern can only be used for one key - as soon as the key touches the skin, that's it for both of them. Because the skin is so thin and it dries almost immediately, there is no way to fix imperfections after it is removed without making the coating uneven. Imperfect keys have to be discarded until they can be stripped down and cleaned for another attempt.

Each key is unique as the pattern is hand made each time, but it's definitely not random. :)

The ones that didn't make it...
About one half of the keys we make come out without imperfections, which are sometimes unavoidable. Here are some of the ones that didn't make it:  :(

I really love these caps, purple for me bro
And what if it just so happened we were working on green and purple Cherry profile keys? ;)

Is it possible to do these with a non-reflective protective coating? I like 'em, but I don't like my caps shiny/glossy.
We had a look into matte clear coats and it seems they’re a little harder to find, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for you!

What kind of wear could these caps take?  It would be also interesting if you had a few made with hand painted or stamped legends on the key-cap.  Maybe a G or H would stir some interest.
Durability is one of our main concerns too and at the moment we’re pretty confident with the clear coating we’ve got. I’ve been testing them on my board but the people who get the trial batch (look out for this soon) can provide some more feedback!

Also, we’re actually thinking of making some black & orange themed ones to hopefully raise some money for GH later down the track. :)

We’re excited to announce that we’ve finalised five keys that we’ll be selling in our trial sale this Sunday night US time (it’ll be Monday for us here down under). More details to follow :)

It took us a while to get these to a stage that we were happy with, but here they are!
  • #1 SWIRL (Dark Choc & Gold)
  • #2 MOLTEN (Red & Gold)
  • #3 CANDY CANE (Red & Cream)
  • #4 STRIPE (Green & Gold)
  • #5 HAZE (Purple)

These are all top row OEM profile (this is just for the trial - rest assured we’ll be doing Cherry and SP in the future!) Also, #3-5 were yet to receive clear coats at the time of the photo but they have now. The bottom row photo shows the colour of the Green & Gold most accurately - it is actually forest green in real life.

And here’s a sneak peek into what might be available in the future ;) Our first Cherry profile keys: Toxic Candy Canes
