Yeah, I know it's a joke. I just don't know how it got started; BGG uses a gold system to add stuff like avatars and custom text, but you have to pay real money or something.

If you're ever paying money to geekhack in exchange for something other than the fun of donating to the site, you've been swindled.

All of the stupid crap we do to screw with user accounts is freeeeeeee.
Are you saying I can pay to have a spam star?

I paid Hoff to get a star, but he hasn't given me one. Why do you get one?

make some more posts, he's probably just busy screwing with other users' accounts right now  :))

Hoff, how many nudes do I have to bribe you with to change Halverson's title to "Traitor"?
Actually, I could probably get Byker to do that for free.

Hoff, although extraordinarily generous with his expansive/expensive artisan collection, is surprisingly stingy with custom titles.

BTW, isn't it weird that you can have only a few months under your belt and still be an Esteemed Elder as long as you get 1k posts? It's just not an accurate title.

I agree with you there, post counts by no means express your knowledge or experience on the forums. I see so many newer people that focus on getting a star when in reality it means nothing. I still consider myself relatively new and by no means an elder. However, I try my best to contribute to the forums whether it's build logs showing how to build/modify boards, answer questions/teach members, etc. Like I said before, the people who focus more on their post count do not focus on the quality of their posts.

Yeah, who cares about post count!?

But honestly, I don't think anyone is just aiming to have a high post count. If they're posting a lot it's because maybe they just enjoy posting and conversing with people. :/

Wasn't aimed at anyone. I have seen others get high post counts quickly before you two. Just wanted to say that post count means nothing. Demik has had his post count messed with and Punks has been here a while but his post count doesn't represent that.

Your words, not mine.  :))

I think the sentiment was that the little title associated with the star ("elevated elder" for mine) should be done away with. I mean we all know it's not indicative of a person's actual knowledge, but maybe some others see it is as unrepresentative?

Yeah it was not aimed at any specific person. Like Hoffman said, post count only shows your interest, however I just feel that some people see it differently as a way to "get in" or be respected more. All I'm really talking about is the amount of one word posts, threads created to specifically elevate your post count, etc. The **** that is really obvious. Also sometimes it just seems like people would rather make a post asking a question when google could easily find the answer for you.

I enjoy being on geekhack a lot so I have a good bit of posts considering how long I've been here, I'm sure that applies to a lot of people.

Post count only represents your interest in conversing with us weirdos. Plenty of people have been around a ton (and contributed/been active) and still have very low counts (inlikeflynn comes to mind).

Your words, not mine.  :))

I think the sentiment was that the little title associated with the star ("elevated elder" for mine) should be done away with. I mean we all know it's not indicative of a person's actual knowledge, but maybe some others see it is as unrepresentative?

There has to be a title of some sort. So start tossing some ideas around.  ;)

Maybe something along the lines of Contributor, Post Master, Spammer, etc. Something where the title represents your passion for the forum rather than your experience.

Where title = (post count / membership length).

So 1000 posts in 2 months = spammer.
1000 posts 1 year = post master.

Stuff like that.  :))

Maybe there should be a thread "Custom titles? We have custom titles?" and someone could move all the custom title posts into that thread to avoid polluting this thread about stars?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
