Advice needed on a good free DVD ripper/converter
« on: Mon, 06 July 2015, 04:25:47 »
I am looking for a good free DVD ripper/converter.

The purpose is to rip and convert the DVD's for my son so that they can be played on the galaxy tab 2 10.1 tablet during road trips.
Ideally I would like to keep only one audio track and have the movie start at the first chapter, so no menus or features.
And even more ideally it would be a portable application, so no installation needed, just unzip and execute.

Any suggestions?

I'll have to check everything when I get home, but I used DVDShrink (does a straight rip of the DVD) and Handbrake for the conversion.  I forget the name of the software I use to unlock the DVD so I can rip it.

I can recommend Handbrake for ripping and conversion.

I gave MakeMKV a try and it does a good job. It is fast and gives a nice overview.
MX Player can play the format, I only needed a different codec for the AC3 audio.

Maybe I should convert the mkv to another filetype to compress them some more, but at the moment I am happy with the results.

As I get Handbrake recommended a few times, I will be giving that a try as well.

Thank you guys for the responses, it helped me a lot.

I have used MakeMKV to rip, as said earlier and then I converted the mkv to mp4 using handbrake. I was really pleased with the results, and my son too, as I didn't hear him the entire 900km drive because he could see his favorite movies on the tablet. And I didn't have to change DVDs like I used to do with the portable player.
So thank you guys for the recommendations, they helped me a lot.
