binge has some pretty great ideas for AV and casting from the venue. if you have local gear that can help do these things, please get in contact with him. i will be flying in and won't be able to carry much compute with me.

another really great thing from last time that we will be looking for again this year is something willing to haul in a camera and a portable product shot studio. the collections that come into every keycon are completely bonkers, and this is, in many cases, one of the only times they'll be accessible for us to capture for the community.

How critical is the parking situation? I ask because if you look at..... http://goo.gl/lI8hfa You'll notice that there is only a few spots in front of it, but you can also park around the back and the side street...this place is basically a big empty room....with a kitchen (any chefs?) I'm going to try to call the guy at noon to see which options are available, the one on Church and Niles Center...or this one. And the cost.

BoilerMaker...are you from Chicago? (sorry if that's a dumb question)...but I just wanted to know incase we both need to talk to them in person (I can translate)...

I am from Chicago - I was hoping to do it downtown, but room costs and parking situation was a bit out of control.

I think most people will be coming by car, and a lot of people will be hauling stuff so I am thinking a hotel with a big lot might be ideal.

Ok, the first place (not the one I linked to in the post just prior to this) has a HUGE parking lot...actually...hang on...I'm getting a google link for it. http://goo.gl/gYFyh6 There you go, that place if you look...to...the ...North of it, it's got a nice lot. Let me know what you think, if not...I'm outta ideas.

Alright, so the update is as follows...

These properties are both managed by the same person...the "Big One"...(Niles Center and Church with the parking lot) might not be available, and the small one is the more likely (and probably cheaper) option. I'm waiting on a call back from him to confirm, I'll update you guys when possible.

The current plan is Saturday only, yes? How early/late are things expected to go?

Keycon is the same weekend as the 'big' MakerFaire, so I'm looking at flying into Chicago Friday night around midnight and back out Saturday night around 8.

A few of us will be hanging out and geeking out the whole weekend, but I believe the official KeyCon events are only on Saturday.  i3oiler can confirm, of course.

i can give a shopping list of simple items to make the light box out of if someone has a couple of light stands and tripod. if i check some luggage i can bring a studio tripod with macro rail as well. a small ad hoc studio needs:

light box
2 speedlights
2 light modifiers. preferably one shoot-through umbrella and one snoot.
2 light stands.
camera with 60mm macro lens (ie, 40mm APS-C or 30mm 4/3 equiv) for keyboards and a 100+mm (ie, 85mm APS-C or 50mm 4/3) macro lens for keycaps.
heavy studio tripod with 3 way or geared head and macro rail (i can probably bring this)
large white cloth (i can bring this)
a roll of white tracing paper
several large cardboard boxes
lots of white masking or gaffer's tape
gray card (i don't have a small one of these)
laptop with lightroom or other camera control and preview
domos

to all the brilliant friends who have left us, and all the students who climb on their shoulders.

I've got some pretty kickass umbrellas (well, by my standards anyhow) but the tripods aren't that nice...andd I think I have 2? SB-600 (Nikons) no wait, just one, and one vivitar flash...and triggers that I could bring.

On another note, am I still bringing the Projector?

An sb600 and vivitar will work great we can put them on optical slave so we don't even have to have triggers. And yes, you are still bringing the project.

I have signed a contract for the venue - info is in OP.

The Room is rated to accommodate 63 people in a classroom setting, but should be perfect for us.  There is plenty of parking and there is a good reasonably priced restaurant on site.

Donations will be appreciated but not mandatory.  If people could chip in $10-$20 it should cover most of the cost.  Whatever is not covered, I will sponsor with TechKeys.  Donations can be made to info@techkeys.us va PayPal

Thanks Hoff - You are a Gentleman and a Saint.

As for food, the restaurant in the hotel may be the easiest, but its hard to say no to some good pizza.  I'm leaving at a every man for themselves for now and if people want to group up and go in on something great - There was a clause in the contract about cleanup fees if we bring food in, but I think as long as we are respectful we should be fine.

There is also a mall across the street that has lots of food options.

Awesome work i3oiler, thanks for dealing with these logistics.  Will send some moneys your way. :thumb:

Personally, I definitely need to sample some authentic Chicago pizza, if only so when I get back to the Bay Area I can eat at Zachary's and say, "yeah this is pretty good, but not like *real* Chicago-style".  Also, I've had real New York pizza in New York City before, so I feel like I need to like, restore balance to the Force or whatever.

I think there is a good John Stewart bit about Chicago style pizza.  He compares it more to a soup than an actual pizza.

From Chicago can confirm.

Also on the topic of food, we need to hit up the Sheffield DMK. They've got top notch burgers.

Also on the topic of food, we need to hit up the Sheffield DMK. They've got top notch burgers.

I'm only coming to Keycon for the food.

Basically Chicago-style anything=heart attack.

From Chicago can confirm.

Is there something else going on between eating times?  O.o

Apparently some people travel in order to see things.

People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Pizza, hot dogs...what else does Chicago have to offer?
