I got hold of some of these keys recently.

First impressions - built to really last - lots of material.

Don't take Rit dye (or didn't when I asked them to).

Slightly bigger (1mm longer - north to south on the board - very close east to west and about 2mm higher) than filco switches.

Shame they don't come in a variety of colours and profiles.

Oh, if you are going to try the Rit dye, I know they can stand 80 degrees Celsius in a preheated jug until the water cools down - no sign of distortion.

Available from http://uk.rs-online.com/web/ part number 333-861

quick edit - the black key is the escape key from my filco...

Damn, those look like solid caps.  Do they make whole sets with legends?

Can they be Dremel'd out to fit onto model 'M' keys in place of the original caps....?

Just wondering.

And even at the prices listed...it's still an expensive proposition, if you wanted to do an entire keyboard.

Sighhh.....

Nice caps, thanks. They do seem to have some other colors.

That'll teach me for buying without paying attention.  That red cap would look pretty cool as an esc key...

The "numeric caps" are double shot and contain the keys 0-9, A-F and four blanks.

The interesting question: Do they fit on a board with standard key spacing? The blank ones in the OP's photos most likely won't.

Ug, what a layout. It may be ready for night combat, but those arrow keys are in the absolute worst place I can imagine, short of between the g and h keys of the home row.

I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

Double  shots.  Pisses me off Cherry claims they can't make em anymore.

If it were only about double shots... have you seen the caps Cherry puts on G80s these days? Thin as paper. Their  sound and feel can make a grown geek cry.

Strong work, webwit.  How do they feel compared to the stock Filco caps?

Common, it's great for assembler programming.

I don't even know what that is, so I will have to take your word for it.

I think the OP  was saying they are standard spacing but the key top was taller and broader.

Hi Ripster,

They're slightly larger at the base of the key north to south (following the direction from the bottom row to the function key row), but webwit's keyboard doesn't seem affected.

They're definitely taller.

Funny, there I was waiting patiently for a set of blank keys to turn up for my filco before adding the white keys...  Looks good webwit.

Are the keytop contours on these cylindrical?

In most shots they kind of look hemispherical/cupped, but could just be that they are shallower. Hard to tell from the pics.

I'll agree with "Geek," but "hack" was intended for the writers in the forum like, "that reporter is a hack."  Fair enough, though.  We are pretty geek-heavy these days.  We used to have a lot more writers.

Yep, they look familiar, got a couple of red ones some months ago from RS-Germany...

They didn't fit on my Filco, so I tried to dremel the stem, ended in getting KBC caps instead, lol!

Warning! Only the white caps fit my Cherry boards, the others have a stem which is too wide. I'll post some pictures later.

Oh dear, the white ones don't fit my filco.  They fit on the switches no problem, but scrape against the side of the key well (if that's the correct term).

On closer inspection, some of the keys seem to have come from different batches, with changes to the gussets supporting the stem.  I see if I can get any pictures that show this up.

Wow, those keys have a very old school shape and thickness.  Those could be fun on my over the top Cherry project.  Keys with the thickness and texture of a Commodore 64 on a nice MX switch would be a beautiful thing to behold.  I bet those things "thock" like mad!

I have the feeling the Commodore keys are Cherry compatible.  My VIC-20 is buried, but maybe someone can test.

Run Stop instead of Esc?

^ Yeah what he said. ^  Funky old thick key caps are exactly what these MX11800/11900 boards need to take them from "pretty good" to "daaamn son, now that's a keyboard".  I was considering some double-shots, but the Cherry double-shots don't look particularly thick or impressive to me.  These Devlin caps look Superklasse!

Oh.
I thought "hack" was for keyboard modifications.

No, that's wack! =P

I have one and tested it a number of months ago but they did not fit. From what I remember the stems were too wide and too loose (aaaoooh). However they did work ok with little modification.

I am happy to have found this thread, as I was getting concerned that people didn't want the thicker keys. Of the ones I have made and sold  the majority of people liked the thicker keys but there were a few people later that liked the lighter ones I made originally. So what I ended up doing was making the keys thicker but with a slightly lighter plastic. They feel much, much more solid but the tactility is still there and they are easier to  make. The sound is lower too, making them ever so slightly more thocky.
Hmmm... come to think of it I should post this in the other thread.... (scurries off)
