Weekly Raleigh Meetups
There is a very nice crowd of keyboard enthusiasts right in Raleigh, and we meet up quite often! We go out to eat, have record listening sessions, BBQ's, beer time, coffee house hangouts, etc. If you are ever interested in just meeting some folks and hanging out please just PM me and I'll let you know what the local crowd is up to on any given week :thumb: We'd all love to meet you/chill!
I'd also be more than happy to help co-plan a meetup in other parts of NC if you are interested in hosting one, and would be more than happy to post any/all info here as well!
Current Community Wide Meetup Plans
Still recovering from the last meetup in Asheville. Now that we have had one successful meetup there, future ones will be far easier to plan I think. It will probably be late 2016/early 2017 when the next huge meetup happens, as KeyCon16 is going to be happening in August(?). So you should be making plans to go to that for the time being!

Solid! Also, since you are a Raleigh native as well I'll run a few of my location ideas across you just to see what you think as well.
First though was Raleigh Brewing, as they have a spare room and are almost always empty between 12-3ish anyways. I can look into if it needs to be rented at those times or if they'd just let us use it after we pick a date.

I have 3 different ErgoDox boards (reds and blues, may be modding one to browns) I can bring. I have a couple old Compaq G11x00 boards I could bring, too, but they're just your standard PCB-mounted ghetto-reds and browns. I got rid of about everything else once I switched to ErgoDox.

Good to know, I was aiming for one of those weekends as well, probably the first weekend in October. I'll give a few more days for people to reply and then set the date. it will be the saturday as well for sure.
Also, not sure if we could actually have the meeting itself there (it is delicious) but I'm more than open to all of us carpooling to a place to eat after the actual meetup. I'm looking into places now, probably will get a community center room rented or get my wife to get us a room in the awesome library at NC State depending on number of people coming.

In addition to the keyboards, I can also bring my soldering station if anyone needs some; I'm not the best with a soldering iron, but hey, I'm sure that it could be worked out.

I went with October 3rd as the date. This is a Saturday. Again, if you are traveling and need a place to stay there are a few of us here with rooms, self included, and we will be happy to put you up for the night. Please let me know if this date works for you and if so I can start looking for a venue as well and lock that down as soon as possible.
Also, I will have at least one keyboard to give away at the meetup, possibly more. I'd like to give a new mx/vintage keyboard away if possible so I'll be digging around the house for more. :thumb:

Yeah, I'm definitely down to go out that evening for people than can hang around :thumb:
Just wanted to do something directly after the meetup that would be good for people of all ages. The beer garden would be slighlty less fun for a 20 year old haha.
So far cooking out at my place is getting pretty much all of the votes, if that keeps being the case I don't see any reason why we don't have the meeting at my place either. I can just get food and drink and some large tables to lay all the keyboards out on (in a room without food an drinks, of course).

No problem. I live about 20 minutes from the Airport, so easy pickup. I have an extra bed, so you won't even have to endure the couch.

I had to miss the East Coast Meetup taking place this weekend but the good news is this meet up came out of nowhere and it's much closer.
If all goes well I should be able to bring a (silence please) Silenced Novatouch with Dolch and some red EK mods.
I will probably bring some MX caps to trade (or sell, whatever).

Adventure Landing may get you shot. Also, its about a 25min drive on the other side of town from where we are. The Dave and Busters arcade is much newer and only 5ish mins away from the other places, and overall probably a better bet :thumb:

You may go home and try it again and because of the slight temperature difference of your environment that the resin isn't behaving as you'd expect.

Yea! I think it could be fun and a cool thing to do to interact with folks. I like the idea of people making stuff and being into the hobby, but I also wouldn't want to contribute to an influx of folks just trying to make a buck on selling artisans.
Getting started with the guidance of someone who's done it would definitely make the process less intimidating for people who want to try it out! And I think it would be productive just for people to see and understand what all goes into artisan making.
There are a lot of components to master though - sculpting, mold making, casting - and ultimately you'd have a lot of equipment to buy and stuff to get to do it on your own! It would be fun to do like 3 meetups for casting though. First one could be making your own design, second for mold making, and third as actual casting. Seems like a lot to organize, but could be fun. I enjoy teaching though and it would probably be a nice outlet for me even. I'd be open to doing something like that in the future.

This is my strongest sentiment about having a casting meetup, however I do think it might be beneficial to do a simple multipart meetup like you suggested. There's still a lot to be learned from gravity casting and I think a course on safety is especially important. Wearing proper protection and being in a well-ventilated area is key when you are casting.

Yeah thats one of many pitfalls and questions i've read from people starting out. It would be pretty cool to have someone there to ask and have them show you how to skip all that "reinventing the wheel" right from the start though, right?
My favorite aspect of "beginners workshop" type classes is that you get to try out something with the supervision of an expert before you make the financial commitment to it. Pottery classes come to mind.

The big one in Asheville Mid next year would be perfect :thumb: Visit the SO and come to the glorious mountains where beer is more than abundant, views are obscenely good, and everyone will be weirder than us and our little keyboard clan in the city. I'll have to get a poll up sooner than later for what dates work for people. Quite a few have expressed interest in traveling to that one.

Yea! I think it could be fun and a cool thing to do to interact with folks. I like the idea of people making stuff and being into the hobby, but I also wouldn't want to contribute to an influx of folks just trying to make a buck on selling artisans.
Getting started with the guidance of someone who's done it would definitely make the process less intimidating for people who want to try it out! And I think it would be productive just for people to see and understand what all goes into artisan making.
There are a lot of components to master though - sculpting, mold making, casting - and ultimately you'd have a lot of equipment to buy and stuff to get to do it on your own! It would be fun to do like 3 meetups for casting though. First one could be making your own design, second for mold making, and third as actual casting. Seems like a lot to organize, but could be fun. I enjoy teaching though and it would probably be a nice outlet for me even. I'd be open to doing something like that in the future.
Yeah you make a good point. I didn't consider it as a business, I just want to make stuff for myself or to trade if i ever get good enough.
I suppose you could simplify the whole 'class' and do something like "make a raised letter keycap weekend/GH meet up". Minimal sculpey use, simple mold, single shot cast. I dunno, you've gotten so good at the whole process i'd love to just sit and watch your work flow and ask questions. :thumb:
There are lots of informative videos on YT that cover the basics of casting and even some advance techniques. A lot of it is trial and error and figuring out a system that works best for you. With that in mind, I would think a casting workshop would impart limited educational benefit, simply because a lot of it is dependent on individual setups. You may go home and try it again and because of the slight temperature difference of your environment that the resin isn't behaving as you'd expect.

I obviously don't make caps, but I definitely see why an established maker (like the both of you) would be cautious as well. I don't see that as someone looking in as snuffing the community. What I do see is a LOT of these days are "makers" just rushing to start an "artisan" brand, and selling sub par stuff, be it the design or quality. Not publicly sharing the tiny little details of what goes on seems smart to me, honestly.
In person meetups are always so much different though. I'd love to see part of the process, even though I've got no intentions of ever making caps. I just like learning what happens so I can appreciate the artistic skill and work even more.

Thats a haul from DC. I drove it once, took about 8 or 9 hours i think out 66 through the corner of TN and back into NC. Its actually a bit longer if you come to Raleigh first but if you do i'm sure between LSB and me we will have a bed for ya.

It will be busy but its just a brewery at the moment, no restaurant yet i don't think. Lines to get beer might be a couple deep but seating is key. If its nice outside i'd bet they'll have some outdoor seating set up. I mean its probably just going to be the 4 of us anyway.

It will be busy but its just a brewery at the moment, no restaurant yet i don't think. Lines to get beer might be a couple deep but seating is key. If its nice outside i'd bet they'll have some outdoor seating set up. I mean its probably just going to be the 4 of us anyway.

It is available, I am just in the process of paying for it now so will confirm it for sure after I have that all handled. It is looking like it will be $300 for a 4 hour rental, so once I pay for it we may ask for donations just to help split up that cost a bit.
As far as housing goes nobody was really into renting large cabins out to a big non-family group. It will probably be best to find groups and look into hotels. I know a few in town are around $50-$60 a night, so splitting up rooms should be quite affordable. I will post more info on places to stay later as well as I continue to search.

Booper suggested airbnb. The two biggest cabins right by asheville i found just flat out denied us haha. :-[

Ok I just booked our hotel, we will be staying at the Hyatt Place downtown. I was able to use a corporate code to get a discount, I would be happy to try and get others tied into that as well but I cant promise anything. I will also share a trick of travel, you will be presented different rates for hotels and flights depending on where your IP address is... and i mean significantly different rates.
The Wife and I wont be in until late Friday night but we'll be good for breakfast Saturday morning, something to do mid morning, lunch, THE MEET, dinner, drinks,... etc. I definitely want to hit up the breweries: Wicked Weeds new "funkatorium" as well as Burial, Green Man, and HiWire which are all walking distance. BoostDemon, thanks for recommending that Sourbeer bar, that place was amazing.Yeah man, Wicked Weed's Funkatorium... I ended up going there Saturday evening cause i lost everyone after dropping off my stuff (or they lost me maybe :)) ) But yeah, it was awesome and I left with a big box of stuff to bring home. Next time I'll be better at organizing a brewery tour around the event. They are all within a block or two of the space.
p.s. that center table with the toxic cap board was Hoff's i think

Andy was going to do a big cabin for everyone, but that fell through. No one wanted to let a bunch of keyboard heathens rent one! haha.
I ended up finding an AirBnB place about 35 minutes away in Black Mountain though.
