[Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: Supplement Cherry Double Shots

I wanted to see how many of you guys would still be interested in some supplement doubleshot keys for your incomplete Cherry sets.   Just to be clear, I'm specifically talking about the control, windows, alt, space, menu and caps lock keys.

I'd be willing to organize or co-organize this group buy.  [strike]Since I'm new here, I wouldn't mind fronting the costs myself if enough people sign up for sets.  I know nothing about the Group Buy 4 and whether this is planned to be in there, but it would possibly take a small burden off of those guys if it were separate anyway.  [/strike]

I bugged Melissa over at SP for a quote.  These costs don't include custom legends (which I would really like to do).  I found a near perfect match to the Cherry keys if that works out.  Custom legends would add ~$25 per key.

UPDATED PRICING (8/20):

Pricing cannot be combined on the white and black sets.  50 white sets and 50 black sets will be priced at 50 sets for all of them.

100 sets (50W/50B):  $16.09/set

Legend cost:  $210 (about $2 each)

I will try to keep the final cost at around $18



Update: Color choices

I think I'll ask you guys to update your posts with the following color choices and quantities (X = quantity):

(X)WHITE: black legends on beige/grey with white space bar
(X)BLACK: white legends on black

I'm at work at the moment.  I am aware that different layouts are an issue.  This was intended as merely an extension of Moogle's final kit (likely two color options), but I will see what I can put together if requests are high enough for additional keys.

Right shift font was close to the cherry corps. Others (capslock, alt, ctrl...) need to be slightly bolder. Both black and beige colors are a little off so I hope you find the right color this time.

 Moogle didn't use custom legends, which is why the text wasn't as bold.  Also, Melissa says that their color GAW is a match for the Cherry keys.  But, I'll have to get a hold of one of those plastic color chains that have been going around (either digitally or otherwise).

Its a supplemental kit for those that bought donor Cherry POS boards for double shot keys. These keyboards have incompatible offset stems for the front row, and caps lock keys so they don't fit on Filcos, Leopolds, Das, etc.

EDIT: Well, I just took a look at the original Cherry keys, which are all left justified like this.  So, you can call it a mistake on the Windows key, or is it?  Up to you guys.

I think you're right about the left justification. I guess I just prefer it centered. I want the black moogle set either way. I can't stand the mismatched fonts

N8N: Yeah, it looks like most of the 1800 layouts have a bad shift and no long numpad 0.  Would anyone have a problem with including 1X numpad 0?

Just for an update regarding font.  I think we have enough people in on this that custom legends is my preference.  

This is the font I will be using as a base to match to the Cherry keys.  The tail on the lower case t doesn't bother me too much, but I can create some custom paths in photoshop to correct non-matching letters like this.  EDIT: It also looks like the kerning is too tight on this font between certain letters.


Also,  I'm working with 7bit to match the key colors, but there's only a few colors left that I'm asking him about.  If that doesnt work out, we might be stuck with the Group Buy 3 colors.  Weak sauce

Well I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it!  you can sign me up for a couple sets if you decide to include the right shift and long zero.

If you're going to do them in black on white/grey I might be in for a couple sets of those too, I actually prefer that look just haven't been able to find them.

Now why can't someone just make a bone standard 104 key keyboard with plate-mounted Cherry MX clears, NKRO, a true ANSI layout, and a nice old school doubleshot set of keycaps?  If there were something like that available on the market I would have already bought it!  (the Cherry POS boards are close, but they're PCB mounted, don't have doubleshots, and I keep hitting backslash instead of enter thanks to that goofy vertical enter key!  But even so I owe you guys thanks for turning me onto them because they're cheap and darn good.)

Edit: now that I look at my G81 board vs. a real full sized board, I would also need a "plus" key for the numpad as well.  That might be too much scope creep for this project, and sadly, that probably means it's worth my while to just cough up the $80 for a new set of doubleshots even though these ones are not bad looking.

So to make a G81 space saver board set of d'shots work on a full size board you would need:

-full bottom row
-right shift
-numpad zero
-numpad plus

plus, you'd have to mod the stepped caps lock key from the G81 to work on a centered-swtich G80.

anyway, put me down for (3) black (1) white - I may bump that up depending on how many sets of white doubleshots I'm getting (working the DT group buy on those as well.)

Yep, I feel your pain.  I had to get 2 full sets of doubleshots from TaoBao to get what I needed.  The first set I got is an 1800.  I was actually going to look to see if I had the keys you're talking about, but I remember that it is in fact harvested from the space saver layout.  I'm missing the long + and long numpad 0 as well

No one else has this issue?  I'll ask about the pricing with Signature Plastics on Monday and see how it compares.

My concern with this color choice is that it is too yellow.  Getting the right tone should be the first priority, then matching value.

Yes indeed as well as the keys N8N mentions.   So hoping you can get White-on-Black, vice versa and the right tone of Cherry grey as I'm also on the look out for DS greys.

I would love to trade.. it's only that I'm in South Korea now. :-( Too much postage cost, maybe?

SoulFree918:  I'm sorry for my ignorance, but is the reason Moogle didn't go with the stepped caps lock due to the stem positioning?  If so, then no to the stepped version.

Litster:  Unless I get some help with this, I don't see a separate order thread.  I might just set a soft maximum to 50 orders.  I don't think help is necessary though.

Sorry guys, I'm almost definitely cutting the grey color.  This is meant to be a supplemental kit, but the grey kit does sound cool.  Maybe in another group buy if this one goes well.

Regarding the Windows logo, sure the 'old' one is more recognizable, but I thought it looked terrible on the last moogle kit. Too big of space between segments. It just looks kind of like 4 blobs to me. I was only pointing out that some attention was needed on that specifically and offering a simplified suggestion that SP might manage better.

I see your point lysol.  To me, the problem is that the line weight isn't consistent with the other keys.  You have these big islands of black, whereas every other key uses a reasonably consistent weight.

EDIT: I do see that the windows keys look stylized.  What if it were an outline around the 4 windows shapes?
