Just watched Mortal Kombat and I thought it was fun for what it was. They did a good job with a girth of material and a limited budget bringing scope to something that was shot in a focused way. The film really seemed like groundwork for a franchise

I don't think they got their money's worth on $50 million.

They'd have to get much better writers for another one. Problem right now is probably none of the actors were memorable enough that people'd care to see them again.

Yes none of the survivors stand out, but that's why they can cycle in other characters for future films. I feel like they'd almost have to go with a known actor for Johnny Cage for that very reason, probably bring in Katana and Shao Khan(who's big enough to play him?)as well. The main group is just ripped good looking people who can fight, and I'd hope a tighter script would make it seem like they are acting better. Or just have way more fighting :))
They obviously blew the entire $50mil on sfx, he fought Goro at night for a reason.

The only real problem I had with MK is that when I think of Mortal Kombat, I think of the in-lore tournament that decides the fate of literal worlds, and iirc there wasn't even anything hinting at that in the movie, but that's more of a nitpick of me expecting them to first cater to people who played the games over the general audience. But to be fair, I was going in with an, admittedly, over-critical eye after the travesty that was the Monster Hunter movie.

We're at a point where it's getting too expensive to include plot.

True, especially with the bad reputation video game movies have. And even though they're improving, there's still the fact that video game movies are incredibly hit-and-miss. For example, I liked Warcraft. Thought it was a decent enough movie for what it was, even knowing the lore of the world and seeing some of the minor inaccuracies they had. It was a fun movie that followed the plot of Orcs & Humans, which is great because not many people are going to play a DOS RTS to get the story, then go through the 2 sequels and the lore of the MMORPG to parse through all of the retcons that came after.

But then compare that to a movie that felt like a personal insult to the fans, Monster Hunter. I get that it was trying to follow it's own story, that's fine. The stories in MH games are usually pretty damn bare-bones, essentially just being reasons to say "Hey, go hunt that big dragon!" And that's not always workable into a movie unless you're making a Kaiju flick, which they weren't really going for. But the amount of things that the movie just ignored or got completely wrong to an absurd degree, is staggering. Spoilers for a bad movie that I'm angry about ahead.

For example, the film treats Black Diablos like a "play with its prey" cat-and-mouse kinda thing, but Diablos are very specifically a species of herbivores, and Black Diablos are territorial because they are female Diablos in heat. The biggest threat in the movie is a stampede of herbivores, Aptonoth that might as well not even be capable of doing damage in game because they're basically dinosaur cows that hunters farm for raw meat. Then, there's the whole thing with the damn Switch Axe the Admiral uses. The film completely ignores how the weapon functions in-game, and by extension in-lore, except that it has an axe mode and a sword mode. They treat it like a sword-shaped flamethrower, which doesn't even slightly line up with how the weapon functions. As someone who actually mains that weapon, it's infuriating to see one of my favorite things in the series treated so poorly. Anyway, rant over, back to the point.

So yeah, I understand why MK went the route of being a little bare-bones by comparison. Less to mess up, and more of the fighting which is kinda the main point of the movie. I just hope they continue and show more of the actual lore from the games, because it's legitimately pretty interesting and I would hate to see that squandered.

Rewatched, Chaos Walking...

If it weren't for the plot holes,   it'd be considered a really well made movie.  Cinematography is spot on.

Just re-watched Breaking Bad from the start again.  Such a great series, better than just about anything else made before or since.  I urge anyone who as not watched it (is there anyone?) to make sure you do, you won't regret it.

Started watching the new MODOK series from HULU, it's a good take on a villain from a comedic perspective.  Also love that Patton Oswalt is voicing MODOK - fits perfectly.

For me, the problem with Breaking Bad is twofold. The first is that I've heard so many people hyping it for so long that there is no way for the show to live up to the glorified expectations everyone I've personally heard speak about it has set for the show. The other is that recently, I've preferred more lighthearted content. Sure, I may occasionally watch something a bit deeper, more introspective, and has a "darker" feel to it, but overall? I'll stick with my preferred stuff, mostly comedic in nature because I'm tired of the "world sucks" stuff in general, personally. From what I've seen, Gus Fring is cool though.

Now I wish I still had my Hulu subscription! I was kinda intrigued by the MODOK trailers, but was worried that it would turn out to be one of those series that just uses the same "adult humor" as crap like Family Guy or American Dad. Like sticking a few curse words and crude humor suddenly makes it immediately funny. If it's a legitimately good show, it may be worth it to check out!

Unlike game of thrones/ battle star gallactica,   Breakingbad lives up to the Hype, it's still not as good as FIREFLY though. .

No show will ever be that good ever again.

It has receded pretty far into the past by now, but Six Feet Under was brilliant and imaginative.
Cognitive distortions are patterns of thought, typically automatic and unconscious, that cause an inaccurate, negative view of situations, people, and/or events. These include things like jumping to conclusions; black-and-white thinking; negative mental filtering; overgeneralizing; mindreading (incorrectly believing we know what others are thinking, what their motives are); and emotional reasoning (believing that if we are feeling something, or if what we are thinking is associated with a strong emotion, it must be true).

I have the same feeling about the 60s
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Well, 50s-60s movies are a bit too simple when watched, that's just my feeling. But you can feel that those times defined cinematography.
I like to notice all those things like new, more complex stories, new ways to capture moments in movies, new camera views/moves - all that when watching movies.
You can see how cinematography evolved through ages - from 50s-60s to 80-90s and further.

My wife thinks I'm a weirdo, as I watch movie really focused, keeping an eye on every actor in the cine, sometimes I rewind to see something again as noticed something strange - either some interesting fact, or recorded mistake etc or just watch other actors in the scene, when main one talks and other very often show their reaction to something, when normally wathcer do not see them as focusing on main actor in the scene. Things like that :)

tp, I have oled since this January and I do not watch movies on it. Its my PC monitor (well, watched a couple on it, but 99% of the time its a monitor to read GH :D )
Plus tv has nothing to do with my way of watching movies. If you like and admire movies, you want to experience their view, learn their story - then you appreciate it and focus on every single second of it - this is my opinion. I never watched a movie by peeking every now and then - this I consider as a waste of time and tv :D
I watch movies on regular 65" LCD, which I bought 5 years ago. Plus I AM that person who grew up on blurry tv - I watched literally thousands of movies on VHS before I even saw a lcd in a store :)
My first lcd tv I bought was in 2009 I think.

As has been borne out by many studies, multi-tasking is "worse than a lie" as one of my instructors in an efficiency class loved to say.

I was 203km closer and grew up fine I think

Jokes aside, I dont think we will ever know if it had any affect on us. maybe it had, maybe not, I remember my dad taking me out to doctor to get some Lugol's solution.
All kids got it that day.

That was how I felt. The birthing episode was spectacular but after that I was done. Yet another example of how post-book material created to extend the TV show seemed extraneous.

Just started Invincible on Amazon. Good to see Image Comics getting their due recently, never thought this is what would be picked for an animated series.
It's pretty good so far, the animation sucks but they do it for kitch value to make it vibe like a '90s WB Sat AM cartoon. I'd almost say the voice actors are too good for the **** animation in some cases. They sure go for shock value to drive home points which reeks of early '00s comics being about as subtle as a brick to the temple, but not necessarily in a bad way.

Watched You Were Never Really Here for the second time last night, I'd forgotten both just how good and just how dark that movie got. For anyone that's seen it, got any similar recommendations?

Yeah, well made, but not scary - but then, do they really scare you when you're an adult?
I remember scary horror movies when I was a kid (Re-animator, Deadly Friend) - but once I've grown up, I can't find a single scary horror movie, its all either jump scary scenes, or just effects that are more funny than scary.
Well, I felt a bit of chills when watching The Others in the cinema, when I was 21yo, but not scary...

Saw this, almost relapsed..  don't do drugs.

It's like you can smell that ramen grease from the monitor, and the lighting is so accurate, it's dim, middle of the night, hungry, binge watching some dumb anime

Mainly watched some mindless action and comedy flicks this weekend with my mother and sister - Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Home Alone, the 90's Dennis the Menace Movie, etc.

It was a long week last week, so we all just wanted to turn our brains off lol.

I'm rewatching an anime from my early teenage years - Code Geass. I've never really been an anime fan, but for some reason someone gave me this series on a DVD when I was 13 or 14 and I enjoyed it. I recently found out that it was on Netflix and have started watching it again with a broader worldview and definitely understand some of the content a bit more. Very glad I decided to get back into it and rewatch it.

Beyond that, I've been slowly working my way through Suits which I love, can only watch it in certain moods though. Also running Superstore for a bit of silly comic relief, definitely get a few laughs out of it.
