old Compaq laptop project
« on: Tue, 10 January 2017, 21:50:29 »
Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help and ideas on this but it can't hurt.

I recently bought a very old Compaq Elite 4/75CXL laptop for $25 at a thrift store, with the idea of removing all the old components and putting new ones in from a new laptop. I've built many desktops but in the desktop world there are standards for everything...with laptops there really aren't, so making things fit will be challenging and will require lots of modifications to the old case. I think the best thing to do is buy a newer laptop or netbook, taking it apart and fitting all its components into the old Compaq.

The old keyboard feels amazing to use, I desperately want to use it rather than fit some new keyboard there. For me this will be the hardest part of the project as I have no idea how to make the old keyboard work with another motherboard...I doubt the ribbon cable will fit anything. The keyboard is the only component from the old laptop that I want to keep.

So far I'm only into this for $25 so if it's going to be impossibly challenging then I won't lose any sleep. I am a complete noob at DIY keyboard building and modification, so any resources or ideas anyone has for me are greatly appreciated. I was unable to find anyone online who has done this before, probably for good reason  :))

Here is an imgur album with some pictures:

Thank you for any ideas or discussion!

You're missing the most important pic - the one of the back of the keyboard.  If the ribbon cable is connected to the 'switches' it's just a matter of connetcing the rows and columns to a Teensy and mapping them, if there's a chip on the board it will be harder...

I would think getting any ports to line up would be the hardest part so interested to see what you can do with that :)

So here's the keyboard taken apart. I don't see any chip anywhere...

Reminds me of my old Compaq lappy w/trackball. This project sounds like a hell of an adventure
