[IC] Project Nebula ver. S - GB Start on 2nd Feb 2020
« on: Mon, 15 April 2019, 08:20:21 »
Shifted some of the older information in the below posts. Here are some of the new updates.

Renders made:

3rd prototype in progress, pre-polished:

Colour chip, colours undecided and not restricted to these:

Pricing and basic details:
1. Case will be top mounted, 6063 aluminium - t5
2. Brass weight, sandblasted
3. Around 7-8 degrees
4. QMK PCB
5. Monotone colour for anodizing - Silver, Pink, Dark Purple, Lilac, Black
6. Default will be aluminium plate in silver
7. Pricing - Base cost of 420 USD + PayPal fees. Shipping will be collected later.

Do note that shipping to USA will be approximately USD 50, Canada around USD 75. Rest of Asia / World will be advised.
I will invoice exact shipping cost when the board is ready for shipment

Additional parts:
1. PCB USD 40
2. Brass switch plate - Sandblasted USD 35

GB will start on 02 Feb 2020 and opened for a month to end Feb.
Limited to 100 orders based on FCFS. If there is too much demand, I will certainly run a round 2 with priority given to people that filled up the list and missed out the first round. I will send out the invoices in advance, if you have payment issues, do voice out to me in advance, I can try to work it out. Cheers.

Delivery - given the uncertainty to Wuhan virus epidemic that is circulating in China, I would set a buffer time of 5 months, extended if the situation remains dire.

More pictures below:

Prototypes reached me along with the PCB. I will do a build for testing and hopefully everything will turn up great!

Anodized samples.

- Older updates -

More
Hello all,
While Eve is currently anodizing our previous project "TaiChi", I decided to put forth this new interest check to get feedback on this new project.
Embarking with us is Project "Nebula" and without further ado, here are our initial proof of concept and prototypes.

[1] The initial prototype that we worked almost 8 months ago, featuring aggressive curves in its side profile:

[2] Modifications on the side profile. We find the initial side profile to be overly aggressive, breaking the form of what we intended. We wanted to avoid it being similar to a sports car bodyline.
[3] Taking into consideration of manufacturing tolerances, the curvaceous slope nearing the front bezel to be excessive, we made several iterations to the design before arriving at this:

[4] Renders and proof of concept Part 1

[4] Renders and proof of concept Part 2

[5] Some initial CAD drawings:

[6] Currently, the team is exploring on a feasible weight design not to break the form of the curvy sides.

I will provide new updates in the coming weeks once TaiChi GB concludes.

Never thought the two words could go together; interesting TKL!

I dig it! I'm in for it if it isn't too costly.

Will prefer for a alu bottom option. Brass plate, too.

Reminds me of the Dolinger but with wavy sides. Nice one!

Would be alu bottom with weights, the initial design feels too much like a sports car. We halted the project for awhile since we are doing TaiChi, and since TaiChi is pending anodizing we decided to kick it off again.

Great! Might want to sink the caps a little. It looks like your enter key is sticking up in the photo you just posted of the side profile.

It is really cool design.
I do not know how the Case color will be determined, but I want a deep green color.
I think this is a great combination with GMK Wavez.

I like the original prototype more than the new prototype. The visible split between the top and bottom pieces is jarring.

Also the silver anode looks nice. If this was offered in an “Apple Silver” I’d probably buy one.

Lynn made a comment regarding this on his korean forum

"I can to check out what was happening when I got calls, texts from my friends and peers.
Long before, I already knew that the GB runner liked my designs and this IC is similar to what I designed from last year.

Kinda feels awkward since when I finish the groupbuy for the Whale, I was planning on making the Dolphin for my peers, but got nothing to say in particular.
I am okay with having a similar design to the original design. What is there to claim a design, it's just a keyboard.
A cool keyboard comes out with a process like this anyways. When I first started designing, I referred to other people's design and added/removed certain features to make it my own.

Well, not sure if this going to work out, but I will try my best to make a better, cooler keyboard."

Original Text in file.

Make an EM7 layout plus F-row and you have my wet dream of a board. It'd be really nice to see an ergo with an f-row for once.

It would also be interesting to see a lower typing angle than the dolphin, that would definitely set it apart a bit more and offer a more ergonomic experience.

proto seems to have a pretty nice finish.

This is obviously heavily inspired by the Dolinger. I think it's just different enough that there's no problem with it, especially if Lynn isn't that bothered.

I expected a lot better from Eve though. This is a step back compared to past designs that were filled with originality.

If the side curves looked like this it would be different enough I think, and it would be sexier imho.

Jesus Christ this is a rip off of Lyn's side profile(dolphin tkl, dolphin linger, EM7, etc.) the proper manner would be "I have worked on this for 8months blah blah blah, this has been inspired by Lyn's design" bro, you talk as if you were the first one to have designed/discovered this one and people who dosn't know deep will look at dolphin and say "hey that's a nebula"  :-\
this is just my opinion but I see how massive the custom keyboard become as time passes on and I see that Chinese custom boards are growing and has made some good boards, but it is sad to see how many custom boards are just a rip off of Korean design...

There are two designs.  The first design perfectly copied the design released by Lynn on the blog, and the second design was the dolphin itself

Instead of complaining about the similarities to the Dolphin, I'll toss in some more suggestions to make this more original.

-TKL ergo layout

-a drop down of the top piece in the back with the engraved design/logo, or a badge of sorts in the same place like the Moon TKL does

-Lower typing angle, if that's possible. 6 degree boards are so much nicer to type on than 8 degree boards, the flat ones are justice the best

-USB-C daughterboard or aviator connector like the Evil80

And so on. EVE will almost certainly run this anyway, so at least we can try to influence this positively instead of throw shade.

Edit: just noticed, but is that a polycarb/acrylic bottom on the proto?
