In the mid-60s we had started giving select special forces members backpacks with mini-nukes in them to be mobile with.

How about a gun that encases enemies in cheese? Or one that makes everything it hits rectangular? A gun made out of balloons that fires small homing tornadoes? A barrel that shoots fish? Or a gun that shoots steaks which attracts tigers?
