[IC] Ergonomic Chair, Licensed copy of the Grahl Synchron 8
« on: Thu, 16 October 2014, 16:35:25 »
I'm not sure how appropriate this is to post here; I figured a forum dedicated to keyboards would appreciate an ergonomic office chair, since the two tend to go hand in hand, being part of your work space.

I'll start this off by mentioning Chris Pirillo, many of you are probably familiar with him, if not, I'm sure you'll look him up if you're interested.

This is the only person I've seen with one of these chairs, and the only person who has discussed them, albeit generally and it's worth noting that the Grahl Synchron 8 is no longer produced, although Grahl still makes chairs, they are designed completely differently and lack the same aesthetic as the discontinued Synchron 8.

Here are some videos of him talking about his chair:

And here are some old, sources for information on the Synchron 8:

http://www.duoback.co.uk/Seating--Synchron-8%28943365%29.htm

Needless to say, when I saw this chair a few years ago, I've wanted one ever since, it just has this sci-fi/star trek aesthetic to it that I really dig, and it looks comfortable.

So you're thinking, well that's great but it's discontinued, what good is all this to me?

Well after about a day of Google searching, I managed to randomly find a South Korean company that manufacture's a very similar chair to the Grahl Synchron 8

http://www.duorest.com/new/product/02_duorest_1_dr120.html

Now as it turns out this is no coincidence. Duorest in fact has a license agreement with Grahl dating back to 1995:

Here's a video in Japanese showing off the assembly and function of a chair, similar to the DR-120:

And finally here's a Japanese reseller with much better pictures of the chair than are on the manufacturer's website: http://tore-tate.co.jp/products/3069/

Here's the problem though, Duorest doesn't distribute the DR-120 or any of it's polymer/steel framed chairs to the US, only the wood back variety, and only in leather.

So that's where you guys come in. I haven't spoken to the company yet, but I will contact them and ask about organizing a group buy for this model/Will put this on Massdrop, assuming there is enough interest.

If this particular model doesn't take your fancy, but the style does, you can buy a similar model at Staples, online only: http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?PID=5487423&ci_sku=WYF078275484783&CID=AFF%3A5487423%3A5487423%3A10428703&catalogIdentifier=2&KPID=WYF078275484783&langid=-1&ci_src=17588969&kpid=WYF078275484783&cm_mmc=CJ-_-5487423-_-5487423-_-10428703&cid=PS%3AGooglePLAs%3AWYF078275484783&SID=skim21335X794039X22a90991ab5f2ea7118c8f2ec13c5de6&CJPIXEL=CJPIXEL&AID=10428703&gclid=CNWOzMaEssECFcJDMgodBwsARQ&partNumber=WYF078275484783&storeId=10001

I'm not sure, but the chair you're talking about got discontinued I think, they don't show it on their website.

I posted a topic on GH about the Ergohuman because I was very interested in the chair (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66496.0) but this week I was at a customers' office and I noticed a really cool chair by Rohde & Grahl (thats what they're called now).

Its called the Xenium, you can find it here: http://www.rohde-grahl.com/index.php?Swivel_chairs
One of the Xenium models comes in a duo back version: http://www.rohde-grahl.com/index.php?x-duo_back_en

Anyway one of their showrooms is actually really close to my house and hopefully I'll be able to take some time off this week to check out their chairs, if you want I can keep you updated.
If its a chair thats really comfortable I'm going to do a trial-seating (not sure what the correct English term for this is :P) and I'll post my thoughts about it on GH.

Not sure if their available where you're from though.
