Are the proud Sponsors off... The First GEEKSHOT TOURNAMENT !
POSTPONED!

INFORMATION THREAD (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40313.0)
So I had seen the SC2 tournament stuff lying around on the forum and was wondering if anyone was interested in a tournament on a different game, such as one of the Counter Strikes or any other suggestions?

I was thinking everyone who is interested puts there name in; then 4 player teams are randomly generated. There maybe a $1 signing fee which goes into a pot (& to cover server costs)...

But anyway if you have reason to tell me this is a bad idea please say, or if it is not allowed just removed it.

Regards,
Tym.

Sounds like a great idea. Maybe something like warsow? I suggest that as it is free and also cross platform for win, mac and nix.

Well I'm not a SC2 player but gaming tournaments and servers sound like a cool idea. If anybody's interested I could run some tournaments free (maybe TF2, Minecraft or CS) as I have Windows Azure servers in Ireland :D

Yep, no problem :)

Maybe some day we could have a big match with a $1 joining fee and then get Keycap trophies for 1st 2nd 3rd and then donate the rest to GeekHack.

I would be down for a tourney in a game I have without a prize, just for fun

Definitely not minecraft. I could do TF2 or Xonotic. Maybe some 8v8 action in MechWarrior if we can figure that out somehow.

I'd be down for a 1on1 in something like Warsow, or a team tourney in something like CS or TF2, although I don't really see me participating as I don't think there are enough European players to make it happen here, and I'm certainly not participating in a US tourney as the lag would be a killer.

Well regardless of the game, or of the region for those who can't or don't want to participate I will stream it for those who want to watch. Should be fun to get everyone involved, even those who don't have the game or don't want to play :D

I really suggest people look into Xonotic for this. Fast paced Quake style shooter for FREEEE!

Great for 1v1 matches, or it can do team stuff if you want.
Title: Re: FPS Tournament ?
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Mon, 11 February 2013, 19:41:54
I like last man standing. Basically you set up deathmatch with no respawn. It's quite easy style as you don't really need to keep track of anything, there is just a winner. Maybe set up with a best X out of Y games to have a longer tournament.
Is it possible to have the server in I don't know Greenland or something, then the ping will suck for pretty much everyone and be fair lol.

Yeah. I could do a DT vs GH grudge match!

Warsow is awesome, and unlike TF2 it doesn't take up a boatload of space.

Black Light Retribution go go.
Not the worst idea, but that'd rule me out unless I created another account. It refuses to recognise my login info after I changed password, when I look at their forums I see it's been a problem for about a year now. Not pleased.

Center Aligned Weapons! :)

Assault Cube would also be a good choice, it's free, it runs under Linux, the gameplay is intuitive and aiming and movement are crisp.

You get the same thing in Warsow. Though it really doesn't matter which one; Q3, Warsow and Xonotic all seem to be pretty much the same game with negligible differences. I do prefer the look of Warsow, though. If you turn on the simplified competitive textures it still looks pretty good.

Title: Re: FPS Tournament ?
Post by: metalliqaz on Tue, 12 February 2013, 10:05:39
Problem with CS is that you have this huge divide with really good players on one side and complete noobs on the other.  Very hard to find a middle ground.
Title: Re: FPS Tournament ?
Post by: 4LI4Z on Tue, 12 February 2013, 10:09:11
I don't think so, just make some random teams or Europe / 'merica, something like that.
Title: Re: FPS Tournament ?
Post by: inteli722 on Tue, 12 February 2013, 11:34:33
I'd probably say UT3, Xonotic, Warsow, or Quake3Arena. now to take a vote on which one people want the most. I'd probably eliminate UT3 unless you know where you can get it for free that's not pirating.

So that leaves Xonotic, Warsow, or Q3A.

Listed Games thus far:

Warsow (Website (http://www.warsow.net))
TF2
Counter-Strike (paid game)
MechWarrior Online (Website (http://www.mwomercs.com))
Xonotic (Website (http://www.xonotic.org))
BlackLight: Retribution (Website (http://blacklight.perfectworld.com))
Quake 3: Arena
Assault Cube
Unreal Tournament 3 (paid game)
Battlefield 3 (paid game)
Gears of War (paid game)
Tribes: Ascend (Website (http://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/))
Doom (Website (http://www.chocolate-doom.org))
Nuclear Dawn (Website (http://www.nucleardawnthegame.com/)) (Paid game, but Internetlad (added name to people list btw) has keys to use for it, so it's essentially free)
America's Army (Website (http://www.americasarmy.com/))

I don't think a paid game would work THAT well, but if it's the majority's choice, then sure, why not.

Updated list with iArson's suggestion.

I do think that we, if possible, should host multiple game types. For instance, we could have a best 2/3 match for different types of games, like CS, TF2, MWO, Xonotic/Quake style game, RTS, MOBA, etc.

This sounds good because then people who don't play some of these games have a chance in something they do know :) But this could get quite complicated if we have to privately host said matches  xD

Other thought, regardless of what game is chosen I think it best to have a fresh map that is not a default one. It's no fun playing against people that have every pixel of a map memorized in case of games that people play a lot of.

This is a fair point, that's why I am thinking random teams, as teams will usually have 1 or 2 good players with 2 nobody players.

All the participants should get a "participant" keycap...something like a keycap with this:
Kind of design, except custom designed, saying "I PARTICIPATED" and what team you were on. Just a thought, not that we have to do it.

And yeah, where have you been in education or parenting in general the last 30 years??? No matter how you did, you're still rewarded!

But yeah, it's just really to remember the event. It IS going to be team based, right?

I'm pretty sure the winner gets a keycap or something. Servers are usually free. Here they are at least lol

I think the OP was referring to hosting a server/renting a server or similar.

As I said in an earlier post if we need servers for something like TF2 or the likes, I am happy to use my dedicated server in Ireland, that's a good mid-point actually!!! :P

I used to be good at FPS games.  I've played a minor amount of NS2, a lot of CS:S, TF2 and Nuclear Dawn (Fun but too bad nobody plays it) and a smattering of other first person shooters.

I'd be willing to join a team if somebody needs a filler. I'm experienced with FPS games in general but my skills aren't where they used to be at, and i've been palying a lot of strategy and puzzle games lately. DOTA 2 Has eaten up so much of my playtime as well (that would be another good genre, as enough GHers play it.) I'd probably grade myself as fair-good for most FPSes.

TF2 would be fun but we'd have to have a groundwork for rules, as there's so much variety in gameplay, weapons, set bonuses etc. TF2 is designed for larger teams as well (think 9 man highlander, not 3 person teams.)

I don't like team play. I mostly just play deathmatch because I hate paying attention and just want to kill everything that moves. Got tired of people whining about all my team killing. Freindly fire FTW b!tches!

I'm exactly the opposite, which is why I loved ND so much. All about teamwork and group play, going from the commander overseeing everything and making the plans, to the squads fufilling the objectives, to the individual soldiers managing themselves and undertaking orders. . . but you really can't play with teams smaller than 9 guys (like TF2)

Come to think of it, I still have a boatload of ND keys (10-15ish?) in a text file somewhere on my PC that I got from the devs back when I ran one of the only clans for it.

Check that out, I could probably hook a bunch of people up with keys (even if that doesn't turn out to be the tourney game, they're just lying around as-is)

I think that we definitely have enough people for a very decent tf2 match. I was thinking of doing two rounds of payload and two rounds of king of the hill each on different maps. As for loadouts, one thing tf2 has always been good at is equal loadouts so that shouldn't be a problem.

Highlander(teams have one of each class) would be brilliant if we could pull it off!!!! :D

HAHAHA. . .

wait, you're serious? You're telling me the Huntsman, the FaN, the Kunai and the Black Box are all balanced, legitimate sidegrades from the stock weapons?

never mind some of the others that completely sidestep the original intention of the weapon it's replacing like the chargin' targe/aladdin's wee booties which basically turn the demoman into an instant kill, line of sight melee character, or the backburner which, for the longest time didn't have the airblast that took all the skill out of pyro, or the milk man set which grants +25 hp (which is more than it sounds if you're a scout) just for wearing a hat and using 2 alt weapons

Honestly playing TF2 with no restrictions would be a huge minus for me. I've played since beta and I still use mostly stock weapons because when last I played (which has been a while because of the issues I stated above) almost every single unlock is easier to use than the stock weapon, with a few caveats. The Dead Ringer and the Cloak and Dagger are obviously made for players who don't care to take the time to properly learn to manage cloaking.

With all that said, let's play soldner.

Hi, all! OP here, I have been enjoying all your comments and taking them onboard. I still like CS but I will really play anything! :D

I don't think the name should have Techkeys in as they are not running it, only sponsoring it. So still looking for names :)

I will start a new thread at a later date with details on, as well as prizes. If you have any questions you want to ask me feel free to PM or ask here.

The $1 entry fee is to cover server costs which maybe incurred/go towards prizes. Techkeys.us is sponsoring us with prizes (so the latter becomes irrelevant) and I will go into more detail again at a later point.

We have so many suggestions for games, why don't we do a "nintendo world championship" style tournament. Teams of x people compete in (3?) different games and whichever team gets the most "points" (W/L) progresses in the ladder to the eventual finals.

We could do games from 3 different engies. Source could be represented by TF2 or CS, one of the quake games for the "quake" engine, and then doom or one of the other F2P games. Since it's unlikely that somebody would be proficient in all 3 games played that would eliminate one ringer carrying the team as well. As an example i'd be highly experienced at CS or TF2 but have never played the other two, so although I might do very well at the source games, I would need somebody else who's played more Quake to pick up the slack in that game. It would also help with "evening" out the teams.

Also i'll throw in "GeekShot" as a possible title since we don't have many suggestions. I might think of one I like better later but for now throw that in the hat.

Nearest I can tell, we're trying to stay away from paid games unless the person who suggests it is willing to give copies away so everyone can play it.

I would tl:dr the post I'm about to make btw haha :))

The items that are completely different than the original intended ones (e.g. Demonight set, Huntsman sniper, Gunslinger engineer) are one of the reasons that we are still even talking about an FPS game that's 5 years old, it's like it adds extra classes into the game without actually doing that. Any items that are a "one-hit-kill" (e.g. Scout sandman and cleaver combo) require so much skill and timing that 90% of the time you would be better off taking them out with the primary weapon (blasting them 3-4 times with the scattergun).

If there are items that are blatantly OP, why do 80% of people still use the stock weapons like myself?  The only straight up replacements I can think of are the soldier shovel alternatives and that is because the shovel was proven to be UP compared to other classes melee weapons (and then they nerf'd the equaliser :P).

Saying that the milkmen set adds 25 health for changing two weapons and wearing a hat is ridiculous, the primary has 2 less shots before reloading and a tonne of other disadvantages and you lose your secondary weapon (pistol) which at times is like a sawn off sniper rifle with 12 shots! The mad milk obviously has advantages but this post is long enough :P

We could set which items are disallowed but isn't that getting a bit serious, I thought this was meant to be for fun?

I would rather have different Genres/Subgenres: We could have a Source Game, a Quake-style game, something like Nuclear Dawn, Tribes, and something like MechWarrior/WoT/WoWP, and each of the 2 teams gets points based on how well they performed (how many people they lost, how many kills, did they go for the capture or elimination, etc), and whichever team has the most total points ends up with the win.

Alternatively, we could do a 4 team ladder for each game, and do a scoring system based on how they place, then add up the scores accordingly (winner is the one with the highest score.) I'm not entirely sure how large teams should be, but  I'm thinking that 2 teams of 10 may be a bit too large.

I do think that we should consider some of the games already being played competitively. I support the BF3 idea mainly because its a good game. I get the whole paid/f2p aspect of things, but most of us are avid gamers who own them already. Worst case scenario I can always let someone use my account, and just borrow a friends to stream. I don't think that games should be picked on whether they are paid/f2p. Maybe a voting system should be implemented.

Where you're saying that the one hit kill weapons take "skill and timing" I'd say it takes luck more than anything. Spam arrows at a doorway that you know enemies are rushing through and you're bound to get a headshot eventually. In my opinion the one hit kill weapons are for scrubs who aren't good with the regular weapons, because they CAN'T land "3 or 4" solid hits with the scattergun, so they grab the FaN, rush in and unload both shots on a heavy and duck back behind cover, reload, and let a teammate finish the heavy off or hop back in for the miracle last hits.

I might be a little more sore on the issue because some weapons (the demoman metal is hp sword comes to mind) are so blatantly OP For arena that it's like they totally forgot it's

in the game, and when I do play TF2, that's what I play.

Anyways, I wasn't looking to start a pissing match, and still don't want this to become that. I was just voicing my opinion on why I would personally like to see (certain?) unlocks restricted. I still use some unlocks consistantly. Like you said you'd be an idiot not to replace the soldier's shovel, or swap for a kritzkreig if that's what the game calls for, but I never use the minisentry or huntsman, for example, unless i'm trying to troll somebody.

I'm not entirely sure how large teams should be, but  I'm thinking that 2 teams of 10 may be a bit too large.

Depends on the games, I think, but 9 man teams are perfect for ND and TF2 (not that anybody cares that much about ND.)

If we had a limit of 27 people, we could do 3 teams of 9, and then play 3-5 different games, either sponsored by somebody who is willing to shell out for copies for those who don't have or F2P.

If we did smaller teams we would either have to consolidate or take ND out of the equation. It's fun but it simply does not work with less than 9 people (1 commander, 2 squads of 3 for objectives, and 2 stealths to provide intel and cap minor points)

Believe me, I've played ND in freindly clan matches, we would need to rig it up for teams of at least 9 for it to be fun. The maps are so big that if you only have 3 or 4 guys you can't respond properly to threats, so you just rush seige and roll up on the bunker and win in minutes.

I personally have one and it sounds like inteli has one, so if we plan to go ahead with the tourney I can do 18 copies of ND. Other than that the game is 30 bucks for a 4 pack, so we could raise the entry fee as needed to fill the extra spots, or something.

anyways, All for Nuclear Dawn as a game in the Tourney...It disappoints me how small the community is.

Okay, looks like I have 18 Keys for ND (17 raw text keys, 1 steam gift)

I personally have one and it sounds like inteli has one, so if we plan to go ahead with the tourney I can do 18 copies of ND. Other than that the game is 30 bucks for a 4 pack, so we could raise the entry fee as needed to fill the extra spots, or something.

too true. IWS tries so hard to keep it on life support too but everybody is too busy playing COD and BF. I'm sure it's the need for teamwork and lack of vehicles that loses ground.

There were supposed to be vehicles, but they didn't have them working well enough in time for release

If they released ND2 on a better engine it could be really big. Lack of advertising really hurt them too. Great game and nobody knows about it.

Counter-Strike (or most paid games, for that matter) are pretty much out of the question, because everyone who doesn't own it would have to buy it, or the people running this would have to gift a copy to EVERY single participant's Steam account (AKA it's expensive). The only reason we MIGHT do Nuclear Dawn is because 2 of us are confirmed to have a copy and one of us has 17 or 18 spare game keys.

I gotta think 90% of the people here have a CS:S license.  Unless you're super young.  It's been extremely popular since 2003 or something, and still to this day.  But perhaps that's a flawed assumption. :)

This means that everyone can take part in the tournament and everybody gets to play the games that they love. Simplez :D

I thought it was stateside too, but apparently after checking the headlines it appears to be isolated to europe. I get my news from BBC.co.uk so I had heard about it a while back.

Honestly, meat is meat. I don't understand why it's fine to eat a cow but oh no you can't eat a horse, or a dog. That said I would only choose to eat a horse or dog if there were no other options, but I wouldn't put myself above it.

What? FPS Tournament? Oh, right.

I do not at all understand that chart. Are there supposed to not be any total numbers or are they listed as most popular to least by what was picked? Why do some only have 1 game whereas other rows have 3?

I'm tallying the results now. 13-20 appear to be the same result multiple times, is there any way to check if this was just the same person answering over and over to pad the score

EDIT: Tally done.

These is the tally with 13-20 omitted under the assumption they were all the same person.

INFO DELETED SO AS NOT TO SKEW RESULTS.

A bit of a double edged sword. On one hand it basically guarantees that some iteration of CS is making it in, and that only one iteration does so. On the other hand some people will be unhappy about "BUT I VOTED SPECIFICALLY FOR COUNTER STRIKE X or Y" and not want to play the one that gets picked.

Well the most voted games were Warsow and TF2 if I remember correctly? I am personally unbiased as I have played both games and love them. If you like I can flip a coin or we could start a vote on just them two(although all these votes are probably making people lose interest).

It doesn't really matter too much because we can play any of these games together at any time if we can just arrange some dates, it doesn't have to be this serious, we're here for fun right? :)

Edit: and I've just seen this http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=9955 , even more reason to choose TF2 or warsow :))

Why didn't you just tell google docs to make a nice graph of the results automagically and link us to said results? It's an option now, all you have to do is select yes turn that gizmo on (Publish and show a link to the results of this form).

Heh, brings me back to my competitive quake days.

Anyways: since there's obviously many different people here, with different os'es and preferences, the game should IMHO be:
Free, cross platform, and a game(as in not a plugin).
This would make it playable from everything from a Mac OSX box to a windows box to a OpenBSD box.
Also; the game should IMHO be playable at any ping since we have a few euro players, and many us player.
The ping requierment is almost impossible, but it should atleast be semi-playable, and then people can regulate between home and away server.

We've officially decided that, for this tournament, we're playing Team Fortress (which is: Free, Cross Platform, and an actual game). There will likely be more tournaments due to the amount of support we got (I wanted to play Xonotic, but meh. I've got over 900 hours in TF2...so yeah...)

Here's the link to the sign up form. Tym will post it in the locked OP and the OP to this thread at his earliest convenience, until then use this to sign up.

as it is planned it's looking like teams of 4 in a ladder tournament, teams selected by RNG as detailed in the form. If we get a lot of entrants we might increase team sizes. Part of the reason for keeping teams small is that the bigger the teams, the more prizes TechKeys has to eat and the harder matches are to co-ordinate.

EDIT: derp forgot the link

Pretty sure UTC is just another name for GMT. Either way I think the US is between -8 (cali) and -5 (NYC) GMT so a tournament starting at 6PM in the UK would start at 10 AM in cali.

We've got 4 replies on the form so far, so technically we've got one team :p

Tym and I are currently in discussion over the ruleset for the tournament. It's a strange situation since the tournament is sort of for fun, but there are also prizes awarded. If it was simply for fun with no prizes i'd have no issues with just playing anything goes, but as there are prizes I personally would prefer to see some manner of restriction, at the very least, on classes (no dupes and locked classes for single matches)

Thus far it looks like teams will be chosen completely at random by importing the XML list into Listrandomizer.com or a similar site, and then splitting the randomized list into groups of four, which will be the team. We have discussed doing this on video if people are concerned about us trying to team stack.

Those all look fine except for the Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol. If anything, It's a downgrade. You die MUCH quicker to a pyro or any other fire weapon, and all you get out of it is no fall damage and a little bit more health. I think whoever wrote those rules has never actually played with the PBPP. I can definitely agree with some of those, but others seem like terrible choices for bans. I would be fine with those rules mostly because I'm hoping I'm playing soldier.

(and Naturally both of the weapons I specifically don't want are legal for use... ( ._.) )

I would prefer something like:

Banned Weapons:

Gunslinger
Huntsman
Phlog
Pomson
Holiday Punch

Banned Items:

Bootie Time
Jingle Belt

All set hats are banned.

Most of those blacklisted items seem pointless to blacklist.

Is the holiday punch those mittens that make you laugh?

Personally I would hate to see the chargin' tard and the booties. Seriously what were they thinking besides "Idiots will buy this for sure" when they made it? Sidegrade my ass.

EDIT: I don't think we have to ban any specfic set item, or hat, just so long as your items/hats don't add up to the set.

Title: Re: FPS Tournament ? (Sponsored by Techkeys.us)
Post by: Internetlad on Mon, 18 February 2013, 18:02:07
I think some of the items like the pocket pistol and jingle booties are banned specifically because they ARE underpowered and nobody would use them anyways. We don't need to do that here, if somebody wants to wear the booties, or have the high five taunt, let em.

I dunno, Honestly, so much of it is personal preference. I'd like to "ban" as few weapons as possible, but the ones I do want to ban, I hate with a passion. (Lucksman, Gunslinger in arena.

What we could do is have a suggested ban list, then if both matched teams agree to "unban" a weapon for the match, let them.

I'd like to have "representatives" or "captains" for the teams and see them speak to the other reps and organizers as middlemen for the entire team. They can sort out what map (if not the custom map chosen by the organizers) and game mode both teams would like to play. That way if team A and B are in a match and they want to play on Fastlane with huntsman allowed, they can do it.

EDIT: Speaking of custom map, we should pick a balanced map made in the last month or so. . . (maybe 5 CP?) as the "default" map and install it. I haven't played TF2 since like september, but I could take a look.

I would probably nominate CP_Orange, due to the overly simplistic layout (you could learn the map within 5 minutes), but the cap times would definitely have to be modified. It's an absurdly long cap time for every point.
Title: Re: FPS Tournament ? (Sponsored by Techkeys.us)
Post by: Internetlad on Mon, 18 February 2013, 19:16:26
doesn't look like there's many new CP maps that have just been released. Maybe a map like Orange would be best then.

Fastlane is incredibly easy to learn too since it's just a straight line. everybody hates fastlane though lol.

I'm not big on regular Payload maps...I prefer TDM_Hightower personally (But that's just because I like playing Market Gardener Soldier). If we do those, we should have a Payload Match, a CP match, and cp_degrootkeep an Attack/Defend Map.

Win Conditions
This should also be on a per-bracket basis. Each team match-up goes through each of these gametypes.

This is my opinion, if we're just doing CP, then I'd say 2/3 wins moves up.

I would rather have really easy to learn maps because we have people who have never played TF2 before joining, so knowing maps will be a really obvious advantage, and with random team selection, skill could be stacked.

I say the Original CP_orange map. No frills, very open, and possibly the easiest map to learn.

This isn't a true competitive tournament, nor was it ever going to be. This is having fun with other people. There are people who have never played before, so we want easy to learn maps. While I'm fine with Badlands, I think a map or that has no hidden secrets would be preferable, and I think Orange_X3 perfectly suits that. It's a flat map with obvious cover and a big tower in the middle. It's an extremely easy map to learn. I think we should have a majority's approval on the map, but I think for our purposes that Orange_x3 suits us fine.

It also has no health packs, long sight lines, if there is a good sniper can destroy the whole game/round, no places for an engie to truly build, bias towards solly and demo... its not a balanced map IMO.

I'd rather play Dustbowl or Well

I'd rather see maps that aren't attack/defense. There are a lot of game modes where maps are balanced for both teams. Arena, KOTH, and a lot of 5CP maps never get any love but are exactly the same for both sides.

If we're talking stock maps, badlands and granary for 5CP and Nucleus for KOTH/Arena or most any KOTH maps are exactly the same for both sides.

I can vouch for anything where both teams are doing the same thing for this. I would LOVE for some hightower love, but that's not to be in this tournament...

Howabouts some Hightower as a fun thing after the event?

What is it with Hightower? Its not a good map

EDIT: If we play KOTH, its has to be Viaduct

I said specifically AFTER the tournament is over.

I prefer Nucleus for KOTH. I don't really like Viaduct. Please stop dictating what we need to do, as it's a community thing.

I'm not dictating, I just want to have the games be fair, fun and balanced for everyone, without being too competitive, but have us all still play on comp maps with comp rules to ensure a good game is played.

Pub maps generally dont make for good Highlander /6v6 games
Title: Re: FPS Tournament ? (Sponsored by Techkeys.us)
Post by: inteli722 on Tue, 19 February 2013, 13:09:03
This will be 4v4, not 6v6. I do much prefer Nucleus over Viaduct.

I would rather stray away from stock maps because people who play them a ton end up having a competitive advantage over those who have never played/plays little. I think a random map or a pub map would be best for our purposes right now, though I'm fine with regular maps. Maybe we can play something more competitive later (I would love to eventually play a highlander match with GHers), but for now we have a largely varied skillset, so a random pub map over something competitive, I think, would be the better choice.

The tournament is just for fun anyways. If two teams want to play a match on ANY stock map or game mode, we can load that up. We do have to decide on a "default" game mode,  map, and ruleset to play on, though.

Get those sign ups in, by the way, it's closing in a few days (some time fridayish) and we'll announce teams and we can plan the tournament ladder/round robin beforehand.

I'm thinking either a mirrored 5CP or KOTH map would be best because they're easy to learn, the objective is straightforward, and you can easily say "We won 3/5 matches, gg." instead of "Well you moved the payload to the bomb site in 13:23 minutes, but we had more kills so who won?!"

Either way, yes, we need a couple more sign-ups. If we don't meet the limit we pretty much have to extend the sign-ups for a couple more days.

I've played all of 10 minutes in TF2.  I'll never learn it.  I think I'll sit this round out.

This game is far from pub, if you have the right config, right maps, class limits and weapon bans. I guarantee you'd get destroyed by and 6v6 team  ^-^

I still view it as a pub game, and the fact that you need to ban classes and weapons for it to be competitive is a warning sign right there.

4v4 is too little, lets do 6v6 next time. Not sure if we can use the same server though, probably best anyway because people were complaining about the lag :) haha

I think a weekly game day (FPS or not) is a really cool idea.  When I think tournament, though, I think 1v1.  That would allow US and EU players to stick to their division until the finals.  It would also allow more than one game.

We need the people to back that up. There were a couple people who were displeased about how the first one didn't go as planned and seemed to give the air they wouldn't be back, and others who may have obligations and will have to drop out.

We barely got 12 players as is. I'm all for 6v6 but weed need literally 50% more people signing up for this from what we had previously.

EDIT: Plus TK only sponsored 4 caps (1 for each player)

and Tym, didn't luke say that he wouldn't have the server next weekend? If that be the case, you might want to postpone for a fortnight, and reboot the whole tournament from scratch. Figure out everything beforehand, a time, a date, rules, and the have everybody sign up and work the teams.

And hopefully we have some reliable stand-ins this time. I think there were a lot of people who really did want to make it but were confused about what time it was. It's very difficult to co-ordinate times between US and UK. I think the easiest is if everybody sets up a second clock on thier computer (easy with windows 7) that runs on GMT and then EVERYBODY just either uses GMT to co-ordinate, or figures the difference and double checks it. We could also post a chart that would show the time spread as the match would occur around the world.

The information was too spread out as well, I think the second thread made it confusing. Just have everything in the one thread, or at least have the second thread unlocked so it gets bumped and people notice it. This could be the overall FPS Tournament bi-weekly thing, and then open a new thread for everybody interested in each individual tourney. A mass E-Mail the thursday/friday before would help everybody be notified what the final word was. That way nobody has an excuse that they didn't know, at least beyond a reasonable amount of effort on the organizer's end.

Just a few ideas.

I proposed hosting in New York as it's kind of a middle-ground for good latency. Also another option is to host the different games at different locations -- like TF2 obviously is in UK, next game in the tourney can be hosted in California or NY

Main thing was we had luke set up with a server free for our use in ireland, that was a big plus.

In my Call of Duty 2 days I was in a clan called BATS (British American Tactical Squad) and we had scrimmages all the time. It's an equal disadvantage (milliseconds equate to milliseconds whether you're on one end or the other)

Anyways, this kind of sputtered out. Are we planning on doing the matches this weekend, next, or even at all?

F*ck knows...I'm kinda dissapointed about how it ended up and im not sure how to continue. And im pretty pissed off I was blamed. I didn't want to do it when we did it I knew it was too rushed. If we plan it for say 3 weeks from now?

I think we should wait till we have enough participants and then wait for a week or so so that we know we have the participants and nobody's going to drop out on us. I think we should probably have 3 teams of 4, and 1 team of 4 as backups.

Sorry that it didn't work out tym.
I would bet that it would be easier to play CS instead. Easier to find players since Everyone has played it, and knows how it works cuz the rules are simple.

Me and jcrouse vs all

I would love to participate in this! I have both TF2 and CSS - I prefer CSS, but I'm happy to play TF2. However, I'm pretty bad at TF2 so please forgive me if I let the team down.
