Damnit... Saw this when it posted at $0.99... Now it's posted on r/mk and here and it's up to $325... There goes my stupid dream of winning it.

And they aren't bidding against themselves, they are outbidding someone's autobid.

Yeah, I've sold my fair share of customs around the 350 mark and barely got any offers then, clearly I was doing something wrong.

Haha but I'm with you, not a fan of the LEDs as well. I thought what made the KMAC Mini so special was its unique layout until I discovered this on TaoBao with a similar layout.

I guess it has to do how the case is entirely metal.

Pretty much. This thing probably won't actually sell at this rate. It'll go for some astronomical price and not get paid for.

Wouldn't ebay just give it to the 2nd highest after the winner doesn't pay? Or do they not do that?

Think the seller can offer it to the second highest. They used to be able to anyway. I've personally never had a second highest bidder buy an item before.

sorry to hear about what's happening... but why in the name of the keyboard overlord would you spend any money at all in advance and send this expensive keyboard to someone from the internet all based on an e-promise? i'm a trusting person and i'm very nice to my friends but when it comes to borrowing money or buy/sell stuffs i don't play around b/c one should not mix business with pleasure and money is business, especially in your case a huge amount. so let the guy from ant simulator game (where his 2 friends of over 10 years drained his kickstarter funds on literally hookers and blow) be a solid indicator that ppl are bastards. golden rule of thumb for selling things - no money no goods. just don't ever make exceptions to this rule. good luck and let's hope there's some karma justice.

It was probably because JD never believed that raccoon would ever do such a thing like running off with someone's valuable keyboard.
For instance, would you ever doubt the cuddly bear that is HoffmanMyster to run off with a clack if I let him borrow one? No, bears don't have any use for key caps, duh.
Because of this trust we place in others expecting not to act egregiously we give them these sorts of privileges that we would not normally give.
Another instance would be the unspoken quid pro quo between friends. If a friend buys lunch for me it is a given that I will return the favour the next time we have lunch. It's like the obligation to help a friend move because you know that one day you'll need their help to move.
The assumption is that if we do something nice for someone, we expect them to honour that privilege and not abuse it.

Just so everyone knows...this is an auction by TheFlyingRaccoon.  This is MY KMAC Mini that I sent him on the promise that he would pay me for it when he had the money. Damn that's ****ty, glad we found out now before the sale was over though. Hopefully the auction gets shut down and you can get it back.

Okay, so I'll give you all the complete story.

In 2013, TheFlyingRaccoon and I were friends here at GH. We talked often, and he even sent me a sympathy card when SmallFry passed away, since he knew I took that really hard. We were chatting on Skype one day, and he mentioned that he would do anything to get a KMAC Mini, but they weren't really any for sale at the time, and anyway he was a poor high school student, and didn't have the money for one. I told him that I had a kit still unassembled, and that I would be willing to send it to him, with the promise that he would eventually pay me for it, when he could generate the funds. I sent it to him, and he assembled it and used it. Time went by, and I didn't bother him about the money, since he was working with [CTRL]ALT, and I figured he would get the money in time and pay me for it.

Last year, he advertised it for sale. I called him out for it then, and he promised to send it back to me. It was always once thing or another, and he never did sent it. He even offered to send me a free keycap set, which I told him thank you but I didn't need it. Messages were sent back and forth for months, and he kept promising to send it, but never did.

Now he lists it for sale again, this time on eBay. I just this morning sent him an email requesting that he remove the listing and return the keyboard to me. I will update here if he responds.

Ouch. That stinks.

Even if he can't pay for it, the least he could do is send it back assembled. Dunno why he has to go and sell something he never paid for.

Very few of the proposed "solutions" in this thread are reasonable. The only reasonable thing is what JD has already done: contact Racoon and request that he remove the listing and return the keyboard. This isn't a case of theft, it's a case of someone being an *******.

Also, regardless of this situation, the lesson to be learned isn't "don't ever trust anyone on the Internet," and I'm sure this wasn't the last time, nor will it be the last time, JD goes out on a limb for someone.

Anyone wondering why JD would send a board before receiving payment doesn't know JD, geekhack, or both. He is known to do these sorts of things, since he cares more about the community here than a few hundred bucks (my words, not his). Yeah, there's a chance of getting burned, but there's also a (much higher, IMO) chance of doing a huge favor for someone and helping to build this community into the trusting and friendly community that I perceive it to be.

PM exchange with TheFlyingRaccoon (01 May 2015): "Hey JD! Really sorry about that, I would be happy to send it back to you if necessary. From what I remember, Bunny gave it to me in a trade. I honestly did not realize it was yours or I owed someone for it. I don't have money to pay for it, in fact I really don't have any extra money right now and I was trying to sell it to buy a phone since my old one is dead. Anyways, let me know what you would like me to do, really sorry about that."

Me: "Yeah, man, I would love to have it back, actually. If you want to desolder the switches, since I sent it to you as a bare kit, that is fine, or I can send you replacement switches, or alternatively some cash for them and your assembly. Sorry to hear about your phone. I understand what it's like to be broke with little income.

If you need my address:

[REDACTED]

Thanks for the quick reply!"

TFR: "Do you want me to include a keyset with it? As a thank you gift. I have a few different sets that work with the layout."

Me: "Nah, bro, you don't have to do that. I have plenty of keycaps, and maybe you can sell the extras you have if you need cash. Thank you for the offer, though. I appreciate that."

PM from me (15 May 2015): "Hey man, I was just wondering if you ever had a chance to ship the KMAC Mini, and if so, do you have a tracking number?"

TFR: "Not yet, I need to get a box that will fit and packing materials. Want to be sure it arrives okay!"

Me: "No problem, thanks for the update. :)"

TFR: "Hey sorry for the delay, I'll try to get out the KMAC this weekend."

If JD could prove to PayPal the situation with the board, could somebody buy it and win a claim with PayPal and then send it back to him? I doubt it, but I'm just spit balling ideas here.

This is what I suggested to JD. If we just report the listing, all that happens is it gets taken down.

If one of you actually buys the board and then can prove that it's stolen goods or something you may be able to dispute with eBay or PayPal to get your money back.

I would honest be disappointed with eBay if they took down the auction because a mob on an enthusiast forum reported a listing. Quite a slippery slope.

*Maybe* if JD could prove that he's the rightful owner of the board, but I don't even think he can, given that this was a handshake agreement.

knowing ebay they might not even give a f. I was recently scammed by a buyer selling a gift card. I sent proof of delivery, the item being packaged, and I even got a written statement from usps and still they refunded the buyer.

This is exactly how I feel. A little mob on a keyboard enthusiast forum isn't going to do much. The only thing I ever got taken down was a video game flash cart, and that's because a powerhouse like Nintendo complained to online vendors that it promotes piracy.

The best case scenario is someone buys it and gives it to jdcarpe, and then the buyer opens a dispute and hopes for the best.

Let's face it, the board would sell in minutes on reddit so Raccoon will get the money one way or another.

If you're going to crowdfund a mini for JD you may as well get his own mini.

But if JD still has some proof of his chatter with Raccoon from back then you could probably file this in small claims or something.

EDIT: another point is that ebay doesn't remove auctions.

Ebay ****ed me over (not the first time) and made it so that nobody could see my listing except people in my province. I set the price low originally with worldwide shipping options. 1 bidder for the entire listing. Asked my US friend to see what was wrong with it and he told me that he couldn't view the page.

I hate ebay.

The worst part is that when I called support they refused to remove the listing because there was already a bid on it.
Meaning that I basically had to tell the buyer that I wouldn't sell it to him under any circumstances.

So who are you referring to exactly? The only members I can think of doing shady stuff are Pac and seth_k. DrHubble's problem wasn't on this level of ****ty, just a lack of direct communication, and even then he still passed off the project to two other competent people. The ratio of bad to good might not be great, but to say "high school students are bad news" is far from the truth

Then again I don't know the exact age of lots of members here, maybe I'm wrong.

The only exception I've seen is billnye *because* I know his age. I wasn't calling out all people who are teens as bad. If I remember correctly, you're a teenager too. Or maybe you're in your early twenties now.

The only other person I recall is sethk, and that's the basis of my slim foundation. There probably are many other leaders whom I didn't know were teenagers, and ran successful buys, and for that only do I rescind my presumption.

I'm still 17. And I guess at this point this more directed towards whentheclouds since he's the one who originally made the sweeping statement, but just because you've seen a couple (literal couple) of examples doesn't mean you should assume anyone of that age is ****ty. Realize that the average age on this forum is probably early to mid-twenties, I'm sure there's a multitude of teenagers here that don't post tons or run GBs that are here for the same reason as you and have had plenty of transactions and such go smoothly.

But again, I'm sure the few, more visible members pulling **** like this don't help the situation.

Very few of the proposed "solutions" in this thread are reasonable. The only reasonable thing is what JD has already done: contact Racoon and request that he remove the listing and return the keyboard. This isn't a case of theft, it's a case of someone being an *******.

Promising to pay for something, then running off with it (and flipping it) - sounds like theft to me.

Unfortunately eBay doesn't much care what it sounds like -- they care about what can be proven. And sometimes they don't even care much about that.

Yes, I don't know why TFR said he thought it was a gift from Bunny back in May of last year. I think it may have been a case of "selective memory." In our latest exchange via email, he quoted my original PM saying that I was shipping it to him, so he knows now, at least.

TFR: "Hey sorry for the delay, I'll try to get out the KMAC this weekend."

why did bunny trade it if it wasn't his?

the trade had absolutely zero to do with me

the board was never in my possession, neither was i any part in the deal that went on between jd and raccoon as im sure jd will confirm

So he's a thief and a liar. And a moron. Gotcha.

Wasn't Sherry also a teenie during his whole kerbopple? The only exception I've seen is billnye, and I actually was surprised to find out how young he was.
Thanks man. Means a lot

I've been here for one week under three years, since I was 15, and I've never had one complaint.

I would be happy to chip in some money towards getting a new kmac for JD too when I get some money, as he has never been anything other than an outstanding member here.

I wasn't considering Classic Beige as that didn't come to fruition. I would love to see it come back, however. Anything before that I have no clue you've run.

Huh? What is this? It looks sort of like a Space Cadet—could that be why people are bidding so crazily on it, the power of suggestion?

But this isn't even a vintage board, is it? With a case like that? I'm baffled.

That seems like an outrageous amount of dough to me for a board that doesn't even look particularly old. I really was curious. Before I posted, I looked around the Web but couldn't find any details about it. – A.

Some people think it's funny to bid for the sake of bidding just to increase market prices. This isn't the first auction its happened, it won't be the last.

Only the KMAC Minis go for that much.  Normal TKL KMACs are much more reasonable.  Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is trying to make a quick buck off the associated name.

That's a ridiculous overpay then.  KMAC 2's were never particularly rare or sought after and the kit price was around $400.

They are sought after, rare maybe not as much as others but enough to warrant people paying over GB price. Just checked my list and the lowest I've seen one go for is $600, was going off memory before but I know they've gone for more.

It was already past that, but some folks retracted their bids, probably after reading this whole thread, that the seller is selling something that is not really his.

All the 600 bids were retracted.

I sold mine 2(?) years ago for about $450, so prices have come up a lot since then I guess.  I still maintain that there are other boards that are "better" at the $600 range, which can net you pretty much your pick of customs.

jdcarpe - if he really was a highschool student in 2013 and you sent it to his home address, chances are you have the address of his parents. It should be easy for you to procure a name and a number. Call them an advise that their son is attempting to sell property that doesn't belong to him.

The wrath of a parent is typically quite effective.

To those that have advised contacting the authorities - he can't. This is a civil dispute. He'd have to sue him - or his parents if he is still a minor at this time.

it's not that much.last month i got someone selling his kmac mini for around $500-550,but unfortunately lost connecttion with him.I also got an offer for kmac 2 for $400.There is no fixed priced for custom board. It depended on how the seller want(non or profitable)The price is getting higher because of the hype of Korean board is too high, and many Chinese collector willing to pay well for them.
