Oh, Binge!  I just did something of that sort with my Penny Candy Hoot a couple days ago :)  I polished it with rubbing compound, and it's a lot more metallic copper-y now, more metal sheen.  Pretty cool!

in order to preserve detail, you might want to try polishing with felt instead of high grain steel wool or any other mineral abrasive. dremel has a number of branded accessories for rotary tools, but there are more types of polishing felt, on and off mandrels, than there are stars on the sky. example: http://www.spartanfelt.com/mandrel-mounted-felt-bobs/
