Inspiration

My wife and I are expanding our home for our first child, and that means some interior design! The E N D G A M E for my home office would come from Knoll - particularly the classic work produced by Finnish designer Eero Saarinen for Knoll during the 1940s and 1950s.

The Lasurite blue used in this set reflects my favorite colorway for Saarinen’s womb chair. Keyboard collectors will undoubtedly see inspiration from other classic sources: original Cherry keysets and their descendents, like GMK 9009, as well as inviting modern sets like GMK Cafe, Solarized and GMK Firefly.

Enjoy the creamy alphas and woody modifiers legended with blue-green for a warm, clean interpretation of OG Cherry sets. Add the Lasurite blue accents for some subtle character, similar to GMK Blue Alert. These RAL reference pictures may help visualize the set’s colors in full daylight.

GMK Birch has four kits for now: a base kit with numpad and basic ISO coverage, novelties inspired by Saarinen's work, a spacebar kit, and basic coverage for 40% layouts.

These novelties reference some classic interior pieces from the 1940s and 1950s, like the womb chair, the tulip chair and table, the Eames lounge chair, and a healthy amount of cocktail glassware.

This is an extremely light 40s kit, offered to help a few friends use Birch on their 40s.

RAMA

This is Rama Works's collaborative aluminum artisan for GMK Birch. It has two infill layers and two tiers. You can see those tiers in the isometric view. The birch-colored drink tier is the lowest tier, while the rocks glass outline sits above it. Both are engraved into the keycap, which is anodized to lazurite blue.

All updates promised for August are in: new novelties, new spacebar kit, changes to base kit.

The August update will be delayed by a few weeks. In it, you can expect:


Still waiting on more survey feedback for 40s support and NorDe-UK. I'd love to offer both, but pricing needs to make sense. I don't want to ask vendors to buy out kits that fail to meet MOQ.

In the meantime, I've also secured vendors for US, SEA, UK and EU. I'll announce them soon. GB will likely run early 2021, but I don't have an exact date yet.

Will you offer a deskmat?

I’ve heard you all on this - we will offer a deskmat. Maybe several! I also personally want a “mini”-mat (500x250mm) to fit my personal keyboard tray, so you can expect that too. More news on the deskmat soon.

Color matching is tough, and you’re new at this. Can we trust you?

I have reached out to several people about color matching, and plan to employ the community’s state-of-the-art techniques to match color.

Rest assured: I’ll use the largest magnifying glass and candle I can find. /s

What about a 40s kit?

I am not personally a 40s user, but this kit is on my radar. If you are interested and require 40s support, please let me know in the IC Survey.

What about expanded ISO coverage?

I’m considering a few tweaks to the base kit to improve support, like R3 \| and R4 >< (thanks Konstantin). Depending on interest I am also open to adding UK-ISO into base.

A Scandinavian-inspired set without a NorDe kit?

I would love to support NorDe users, but it’ll be challenging. Consider two of the biggest sets to date: GMK 9009 sold 1500 base kits and 55 NorDe kits, while GMK MoDo Light sold 3000 base kits and 100 NorDe kits. At a 3% attachment rate and a standard 250 MOQ, I would sell 7.5 kits.

That said, if you’re interested in NorDe, chime in on the IC Survey and I will definitely consider it.

Love the base kit, but...chair novelties? (And other comments about Corbusier / Mies and Saarinen’s architectural work.)

I hear you! I’m not the biggest fan of novelties myself. If you’d like to express yourself outside of interior decor, I promise you’ll love the work coming from the artisans collaborating on this set. Hopefully you’re also interested in the base kit as is.

I'm a fan of the colors, they remind me of some Prostoria furniture I own (not quite Knoll, but close enough). Nicely done.

You can remove the 1.75u spacekey since there is no 40% support in the set, and that size is only used on a few 40% boards.
1.25u and 1u spacekeys would be a better inclusion, since they are also used on Alice-style boards, ≥60% splits and for standard split 6.25u space.

I set out to design something that fit into both my new home office and my (hypothetical for now, am I right?) desk at work, and thought of this as an excuse to learn some graphic design (a personal life-long goal). Thank you all for the kind words and feedback during the first day of the GMK Birch Interest Check. (I’m sending this message a bit earlier than 24 hours, because frankly I need to celebrate putting this out into the world.)

This set rendered on the gold Hiney TKL One just sold me. Count me in!

Maybe the novelties can get a slight upgrade? Possibly add some interior design alternatives like a vintage record player/jukebox, vase with flowers, ottoman, a cigar (less on theme but think it would fit), framed painting or other nice touches to a home office. Just some things that came to mind. Either way, love the set and will be picking one up once GB comes around.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The novelties have provided a fun excuse to learn graphic design, but there’s clearly a mixed response to them. I’m weighing out a few options:


If I keep them, they definitely need to be polished, specifically errors in proportion while setting up my artboards. Some folks also identified two which may fall outside of GMK standards (thanks crykn and 159) - I forgot to double check this before running the IC.

I’ll keep you all posted on what I decide, and would love to hear more from you all about this in the meantime.

I’m absolutely considering those changes to base ISO support, thanks for suggesting them and sharing links to the reasoning for the keys. The improvement in coverage is phenomenal.

As for 40s support, I’m considering adding support in the form of R2 & R3 1u Esc, R3 Enters in 1u and 1.75u along with Tab in 1.25u, and R4 1u Shift and Enter. These may go into the Spacebars kit, alongside split alpha-colored white bars, as a single Extension kit for non-base layouts.

Thanks for calling this out. I agree! I think the tulip chair's bottom lip, the womb chair's cushion seam, and the grasshopper chair armrest are all thinner than GMK tolerance allows.

I will share a revamped novelty set early next month. As part of that, I'll make sure the designs conform to Uniqey's novelty guidelines. In the meantime, I've hidden the current novelty kit design.

I’m 100% in on the theme and aesthetics of this set, yet the novelties are not of interest to me.  But I will buy this set in a heartbeat if it comes to Group Buy. I would be more interested in novelties that convey subtle curves and clean lines in a more abstract way.  I don’t know what that would be, however.

I almost feel like there's a lack of blue here. Like, the set looks slick right now, but I feel like the modifiers should all be blue and the alphas birch, or the other way around. Or something, I don't know. You've probably gone through a million colorways beforehand so you might've tried those.

I also, as a lover of mid-century modern, usually associate darker woods with it, like walnut and rosewood, maybe a little teak. It'd be cool to see the blue with that rich brown. Maybe alt-alphas? I don't know, just throwing spitballs at the board here.

The R1 "Scroll" from GMK is a little messed up right now. The ll is tilted to the right. It looks like Scro//. I would recommend switch to "Lock" if GMK doesnt fix their molds. GL

I’ve started working on deskmats to take a break from a particularly challenging chair novelty. Vintage Knoll ads have provided lots of inspiration for these. I came across this ad and thought it was lovely - captures the curves of their landmark furniture really well.

One caveat on the novelties I've shared: after some feedback from a supplier, my US vendor and I are exploring any potential IP issues with legal counsel. Until we have a clear answer from counsel, I am calling that kit PROPOSED instead of finalized.

I would love nothing more than to see these novelties run as a kit, but I do not want to get anyone's hopes up.

Included this input in IC but it would be nice to see a few common 40s keys make it into the base kit (R3 1.25 tab being the big one). Hope some other 40s users could give some input as well, but that one key would be a help in fitting some popular 40s layouts and wouldn't likely be cost prohibitive

Mini-update for Birch:

Aluminum artisan design plans have changed, so I am working on updated designs. As a bonus, I will now include a reversed Eames chair (birch-on-blue) in the novelty kit.

Deskmats are nearly complete, and after that it's time for samples. I'm tweaking one render with the updated deskmat design, and will share that here when it's ready.

I don't think I've explicitly pointed this out, but one of the new renders shows a Dawn FE (by crykn of Finite Designs) in white. That Dawn is sitting atop the first confirmed deskmat design. :)

I have some bad news for international users - after chatting with vendors, I can't get to a place where set feedback and current GMK MOQs justify offering an International Kit. This will be my first GB for a wholly-original keyset, and I prefer to make conservative kitting decisions. Put another way, I do not want to obligate others (or myself!) to buy out a kit for which there may not be sufficient demand.

If the set proves to be successful, and folks demand either a second round or a run in another profile, I would be ecstatic to offer NorDE-UK options. Additionally, the base kit does offer physical ISO support. But as it stands now, I will not offer this next February.

My sincere apologies to all of you.

I love the colors but not a big fan of the novelties. It would be better to design some iconic symbols or things other than the furnitures. You should understand that not everyone has the same love to the chairs.

I enjoy the inspiration for the set and how you've translated it into the keycaps.

The colors jive well together, it's all very cleanly designed. The coup de grâce is definitely that RAMA cap, bravo. I mean, this set is simply wonderful. As someone who prefers and enjoys in your face gonzo colors and themes, I am ironically a fan of GMK Birch.

There was a comment about an ISO novelty enter with a floor lamp and I absolutely agree with it. You've already mentioned that you'll be designing and adding it to the novelty kit, good choice. Speaking of kits, the kitting is great. It will satisfy most people. Unfortunately, it's difficult to please everyone with all the niche layouts out there that would like to be supported, but I think most will be satisfied.

Hi everyone! I have finished updating kitting for GMK Birch. These updates have been submitted to GMK for quoting, and you can see them below.

The most notable change is the inclusion of an extremely light 40s kit (accents are even excluded, to bring the price down as much as possible), which is tentatively offered pending GMK quoting. I am concerned about not hitting 100 MOQ with this kit, but a lot of friends would like to use Birch with their 40% boards.

Anyway, this is the home stretch! Once GMK replies with quotes and kitting is confirmed, I will share pricing.

My only gripe (considering that it's supposed to be a light kit) is that if your 40's kit has fewer keys than your spacebars kit, you should probably just go ahead and just roll them into the same kit. Or include 40's in some other kit instead of having it hang out there by itself. Making a separate kit just increases the cost of the whole set. Sticking that 40's and spacebars together means that you wind up with a $40-$45 all inclusive kit instead of a $28 spacebar and $25 40's kit, and then you don't even need to worry so much about MOQ of either.

Usually designers don't discuss their data and reasoning at length, but (as my poor friends can tell you) I'm a transparent and chatty guy. So you're getting a wall of text. Apologies in advance. ;)

I designed this updated kitting with the average user's expected out-the-door cost and price-sensitivity in mind. I've been asked to drop less common keys and even numpad in some instances. So folks are very concerned about this set's GB price. That said, 22% of respondents wanted Forties or Spacebars, but not both. Both Spacebars and Forties? 7%. So an Omnibus kit saves money for 7% of customers, while driving up prices for three times as many customers.

Note that 22% is understated, because I moved accent spacebars out of base kit. Users who want lazurite blue aesthetics must now buy Spacebars. With an Omnibus kit those users would pay a lot just to get the bars I pulled out. That felt unfair, because I launched Birch's IC with accent spacebars in Base.

So, I'm adding a second B into base and offering two minimally-kitted child kits. Split users who don't care for blue aesthetics but bought an Adélie can get Forties; users who need that sweet lazurite blue bar or use Alice can pick up Spacebars. I hope and think there's enough support to hit MOQ on those child kits, so I believe both kits will be made, but the GB will ultimately show me what's up.

Well I hate that you moved accent space bars out of base kit, I think keeping that one 6.25 accent space bar in base is better since it's that standard and most pupolar size. Since you already sent to Gmk for quote, it's probably late for a change. Still, nice set.

Yeah kinda bummed about that too especially when most of the old renders showed the set with the accent spacebar. Though tbf most other sets have the accent spacebar in a separate spacebar or novelties kit anyways so not a huge deal; will probably still get the set regardless since I'm really into the colors and the Rama. Though I think it might be helpful to show a few more renders without the accent spacebar to help people decide if the extra kit is worth it.

Well I hate that you moved accent space bars out of base kit, I think keeping that one 6.25 accent space bar in base is better since it's that standard and most pupolar size. Since you already sent to Gmk for quote, it's probably late for a change. Still, nice set.

Yeah kinda bummed about that too especially when most of the old renders showed the set with the accent spacebar. Though tbf most other sets have the accent spacebar in a separate spacebar or novelties kit anyways so not a huge deal; will probably still get the set regardless since I'm really into the colors and the Rama. Though I think it might be helpful to show a few more renders without the accent spacebar to help people decide if the extra kit is worth it.

Sorry about that, you two. That said, almost every single board render I've shared doesn't include an accent spacebar. They should give you a good idea of the look. (I personally found the 1-2 renders with accent bars overwhelming after a while, and realized accent bars in my personal sets have gone unused.)

We are a little over one week away from the opening of GMK Birch for group buy! GMK continues to review kitting, and I will have a pricing update for you before February 1st.

One additional note: Forties Kit will run regardless of GMK quoting. Have received lots of positive feedback on it, and want to see it through for my 40% friends.

To reward your patience with pricing, I've asked Motohiro to render GMK Birch on a suave blue KFE CE by Biso and beamingrobot. The KFE CE GB is open on Monokei for a few more days. Hope this gives you an idea of how the keyset looks on navy blue. :)

Awesome to hear! Love their work, such a detailed unique sculpt.

One more for my fellow artisan fans: Phage Caps has also confirmed he will offer a GMK Birch collab! I haven't had any luck with Damnations or Hexes, but I am an enormous fan of encapsulated artisans and am really excited by his work.

This looks nice. Very chill. Not super fan of novelties (they are fine, but not my fav), but fan of 40s kit, which is essentially alice too
