Title: [IC] Vintage Keyboard Mega Lot
Post by: Xonar on Sat, 06 June 2015, 20:27:58
(http://i.imgur.com/NfCQHHH.jpg)

eBay user nieva6173.89ejjb (http://www.ebay.com/usr/nieva6173.89ejjb?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) has been listing some really cool vintage computer stuff on eBay recently, and I won an auction of his for 13 IBM Model F and M boards. I'll be going to pick those up soon, and he's also listed a bunch of nice Apple keyboards. There seems to be a good amount of interest for these boards, so I figure I can run a GB for these since I'll be going to pick up the IBM boards anyway!

AEK II Lot (http://www.ebay.com/itm/121670508789)
ADK Lot (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-11-Apple-Design-Keyboards-/121670533683?&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255)
M0110 Lot (http://www.ebay.com/itm/121670525746?afsrc=1&rmvSB=true)
M0110A Lot (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-12-Apple-Extended-Keyboards-Model-M0110A/121670539045?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Da2c8b623c15542b19314f36f5dde5a99%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D121670525746&rt=nc)
M0116 Lot (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-12-Apple-Keyboards-M0116/121670519107?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D5c3343dc62744c858f9096fc20c19472%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D121670539045&rt=nc)

12 of the AEK II boards are available, 11 of the ADK boards are available. 5 of the M0110 boards are available, 12 of the M0110A boards are available, and 12 of the M0116 boards are available, which brings the grand total to 52 keyboards.

I doubt these will fetch as high a price as the IBM lot did ($307), so the cost per keyboard should be pretty low, but of course we won't know until we get to the end of the auction. You can order one of each board.

After the auction is won and I pick the boards up, I'll begin sending out invoices. Of course, you'll pay 1/5 of the total auction price if you want an M0110, and 1/12 of the total auction price if you want an AEK II, M0110A, or M0116. Right now, we're going for a max of $85 for the ADK and M0110 lots and $240 each for the other lots, so that's about $20 per keyboard before shipping except for the ADK's, which will be about $8 before shipping. Shipping cost will depend upon your location and will be included in the invoice.

User Interest List:

Available Keyboards Based on User Interest List: 27

0/5 M0110 Available | 10/12 M0110A Available | 9/12 M0116 Available | 6/12 AEKII Available |

I'll tentatively put this here:

Link to Google Form (http://goo.gl/forms/T9zhWjvEYx)

Only fill it out if you're absolutely sure you'll be buying what you're putting down. Otherwise just express interest below.

ACCORDING TO XMIT, THIS GUY HAS AN ABSOLUTE GOLDMINE OF KEYBOARDS. (See thread here. (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=72596.0)) This GB will likely encompass many more boards after I meet with this guy to pick up this initial batch. I'll keep you guys posted!

It might be a good idea to come up with a price threshold on lots.  You'll likely be hard pressed to get people to agree to an open ended price.

That's a good point. What do you guys think is a reasonable price threshold? I'm thinking about $100 for the M0110 lot and $240 per lot for the AEKII, M0110A, and M0116 lots. That would work out to about $20 per keyboard before shipping.

i'd like one M0110A.

Added you guys to the list.

Got you both down on the list.

I updated the google form to include the AEK II, so if you submitted a response before it was there you can submit another response and I'll delete your old one.

Good luck with this! I'm not interested - I have one of each of these already. But if anyone needs a spare key switch or key cap for an M0110 or M0110A please send me a PM. I'm selling off parts from a donor M0110A board for a nominal fee.

Don't forget that there are three different kinds of AEK II out there: Mitsumi, Alps Salmon, and Alps White/Cream damped. Alps Salmon is one of my favorite switches.

Thanks! Yep, it would be nice if they were all Salmon Alps, but I'm guessing most of these will be Cream Damped. We'll see, though!  ;) And indeed, this is something to keep in mind before signing up for an AEKII.

In that case, I'd suggest filling out the form for just an M0110, and I'll still keep you on the user interest list for the AEKII. The user interest list is mainly to reserve spots for the board(s) you want since this is a first come first serve deal. If you decide you for sure want an AEKII later, you can submit another response. Conversely, if you decide you definitely don't want one, I'll open up your spot for the AEKII to the next in line if the list for that is full.

Not sure if you'll see any here, but, remember: Apple Design Keyboards with two square rubber pads on the back, that are Made in Czech Republic, are ideal key cap donors for Alps keyboards. They have PBT keys and normal (as opposed to AEK II style rotated) orientation for the Function keys.

If anyone is looking to convert the M0110/M0110A or the others for use with say hasu's tmk: there are $5 Pro Micro knockoff boards on eBay that work well for this.

Okay, the seller just listed 11 Apple Design Keyboards. At a price threshold of $85 for that lot, it should be about $8 per board. Updated the OP to reflect this.

XMIT says that the ones made in the Czech Republic are good cap donors. The one visible in the picture with the bottom facing up appears to be made in Mexico. Dunno about the rest. I'm not sure what the cap material or printing method is for the Mexican-produced ones, so if someone could provide info for that I'd appreciate it.

Now that the total keyboard count for this buy is 53 so far, I'm opening it up to more than 2 boards per person. You can request one of each now, and I'm limiting each board to only one per person. That's how I should have done it from the start. Sorry for the confusion. This doesn't limit any current submissions, but anyone who has already submitted a request can submit a new one if you want more boards.

I'd be interested in an AEKII!

Put you down for one!  :)

These are probably all ANSI keyboards.

My previous comment was about the Apple Design Keyboard as a potential key cap donor. I haven't seen any here. Apple Design Keyboards with two square rubber pads made in Mexico tend to have pad printed ABS keys. The ones made in the Czech Republic are uncommon in the US.

Id be interested in a cap donor for my infinity KB (m0116 I think is dyesub?). Would happily split someone interested in switch harvesting.

I live in the area and would be more than willing to pick up the items and help with distribution.

For me, I would only really want to be in if I could get them for an average of ~$20-25 shipped.  I've spotted enough at $30 shipped that anything more than a max of $25 shipped per board (I said 3 I wanted, so probably $15-20 a board) would be too much for me.

Yeah, I'm hoping these lots will go for less than the price thresholds. Which three were you interested in? I can add you to the list if you want, just in case the price ends up being lower than expected.

Seller just listed these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-Three-Apple-II-Computers-/121671395680?&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255=), btw. Anyone interested? :)

Yeah man, no worries. I'm mostly interested in seeing what else he has available. I'm free Sunday and hope he'll let me come visit.

modern ALPS is a real hole in my knowledge (I know much more about tee mount). If I want some dyesub caps to put on the alphas, which apple KB do I want? M0116?

Sounds good! The AEKII or M0116 will both be good cap donors for the alphas since both are dyesub PBT. AEKII layout is more practical in case you found use for keys outside of the alphas. F row keys are mounted vertically on the AEKII, though.

There's one spot left on the interest list, which I've added you to.  ;)

In this case the AEK II is your best bet, of these. But, watch out for the vertically mounted (90 degree rotated) switches on the function row.

Hi all,

Evan AKA nieva6173.89ejjb on eBay here. If you all want to put together a reasonable offer for these lots I'm more than happy to cancel the listings and hand everything off to dorkvader when they come to visit (or anyone else).

I don't really know what any of this is or what it's worth, but you all seem pretty interested. Any reasonable offer will be fine by me. Let me know if there are any more angles I should take photos of to post here so you can know what things are more accurately?

Thanks so much for your interest!

Sure thing, I'll put you down for a spot!

Just talked to Evan, and I think we can proceed to the GB phase now. Before shipping, we're looking at $17 per M0110, and $12.50 per AEKII, M0116, or M0110A. I suspect the ADKs are all pad printed ABS, so I'm guessing there won't be much interest in those. I'll find out for sure, though.

Everyone say thanks to Evan for coming to us directly!  :thumb:

Hello Evan! XMIT here. I'm the one who sent you here from eBay.

From all of us, we're so sorry for your loss. :(

I know there must be quite a lot to sort through. The more photos and/or listings you post, the better. I already copied the photos you sent me previously, earlier in this thread. Though, can you possibly provide higher resolution and/or more photos?

Also, out of curiosity, where was your father's electronics shop? I spent some time in the Boston area and wonder how many times I must have passed it by without stopping in.

Surely we can help you find good homes for all of these items. If not here, places like the Vintage Computer Forums have folks who would be interested in these items. Different forums have different rules for being able to post Classifieds and the like but I think we can help with this. (Is anyone here active on vintage-computer.com?)

If you're just curious to know what something is, maybe some of us can chime in on this thread to let you know. I looked through the photos and spotted:
- IBM monochromatic CRT displays
- Macintosh Plus, SE, or SE/30 (difficult to tell from the photos)
- Apple Extended Keyboard in box
- Apple II displays
- a Model M and some other unknown keyboards in a box (what is the one with "ears"?)
- IBM PC XT
- a typewriter
- Apple IIs and floppy drives

Lets also take a moment to thank XMIT and dorkvader for helping immensely to make this buy possible!

I'm looking at the attached photo of Apple Design Keyboards.

I see two there with square rubber pads. I assume these are Made in Mexico and have pad printed ABS keys. These are still nice key donors for someone who really needs keys. Better than nothing.

Would shipping to EU/Sweden be possible (and less than $20 for a board)?

I'd be interested in a M0116 (or two).

In my experience, you're looking at about $50 shipping to the EU at the very least for a keyboard. I usually ship USPS Priority. Are there less expensive options? UPS and FedEx international rates always seem higher.

Yikes!  Well… I'd have to pass again, I guess.

Yeah sorry. The good news is that adding a second keyboard really doesn't add very much to shipping costs.

I've sent keyboards to France, the UK, Germany and Switzerland and it always works out to about that much.

That's true. A total of $75 for two M0116s with shipping would be ok, I guess.

Unfortunately, this buy is limited to only one of each board per user, for now. If we get a lot less people interested in the M0116 than expected, that probably will change, though.

If any AEK-IIs are still available, I am interested! Should I fill out the form accordingly?

I feel like  restoring this  MO110 is going to be a lot of work... But I'm still exited none the less to get it in full working order.  :)

I hope I can restore it to somewhere to the level of this:

It takes a few hours but is worth it

If I want some dyesub caps to put on the alphas, which apple KB do I want? M0116?

In this case the AEK II is your best bet, of these. But, watch out for the vertically mounted (90 degree rotated) switches on the function row.

I wont be using the function row but a m0116 might be better since it has a 1x \| key so I can put it up on the top there for hhkb layout.

Put be down for a m0116 please! (again: totally willing to split switches with someone. I *only* want the caps)

Evan

Hello again from the other thread! I am fairly local (as are a few others) and if you need help sorting through it all I figured I could lend a hand.

I posted a similar message in the other thread about this collection, but figured it makes more sense to post it here:

Dorkvader came by earlier this morning and helped me go through a lot of the collection. He left with an entire car load of keyboards for the group buy. It turns out I'd initially miscounted some of the models that I'd posted on eBay, and we found more of some, so many of the original numbers are now incorrect. He has photos of it all and is planning on posting the entire collection later today (I think).

Many many thanks to XMIT, Xonar, SL89, and Dorkvader for taking the lead on this endeavor!

I've been seeing a bit of chatter from local people interested in coming and taking a look at everything. If anyone is interested, I'm open to the idea of freeing up a day next weekend (probably Sunday the 14th) as a sort of open house event to offer an opportunity take photos, make sales, and help me work out what all this is and what I should do with it.

If only I had a vehicle, or a ride from Philadelphia...
It sure would make things easier.

everything has been taken out of my car.

If you bought a KB from him on eBay I have it here with me.

I am organizing with everyone to see how best to deal with this.

Pictures in the first link appear to be about 45 - 50 kbs.
I believe I took home about 78 - 82 KBs today.

I will be posting be in the GB topic from now on https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=72620.0
