C.R.E.A.M.
I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

If they are like reds with a shorter travel, wouldn't it be too difficult to make soft typing without bottoming out?

I have yet to see a real video of someone using reds going full typing speed that doesn't bottom out. I've asked everybody that claimed they didn't bottom out to provide visual proof and they always disappeared after :)

I'm averaging 92-97 WPM and it's close to impossible not to bottom out going full speed. So it's not like MX speed are really at a disadvantage here compared to reds in terms of bottoming out.

I'm an avid light linear fan and I've been using MX reds at home and at work for close to 3 years. I have a cooler master quickfire TK MX red at work and an original K70 RGB with MX red at home. I even consider reds to be a bit heavy sometimes. I have yet to try something lighter than reds.

I have purchased a K70 RGB rapidfire. The higher actuation point is nice and is indeed much more reactive and quicker than reds. The rapidfire keys feel much more stable than the keys on the original K70 (the original K70 felt woobly at time... even my quickfire feels nicer and firmer). I do miss the extra travel though as I loved the feeling of sinking into that travel distance and the possibility to hover just over the actuation point. I'm a very light typist and when I'm not at full speed, I just love the feeling of having my fingers float in the travel distance on the reds. My biggest complaint is the extra stiffness/weight of the switch. That extra weight toward the end of the press is definitely there. People wishing for a nice compromise between blacks and reds will really like the silver switches.

As for typing speed, I hit exactly the same 92-97 WPM with both type of switches.

I'm still in my exchange period to swap this for a K70 lux with reds. The silver switches kinda feel more tactile and less mechanical than MX reds. It's a tough decision. I'll probably keep it though since I already have my original K70 with reds so I can switch from time to time. I just can't make up my mind.

I need to try other switches too. Linear ideally :)

Cherry MX Silver Switches sounds much comfortable than Cherry MX Red Switches.

As for me, I prefer Shorter bond path.

Ugh.. you're not annoyed by that perpetual grit of sand inside of your switch? Scratchy scratchy switch. I was like you and I like light linear switch very much but after I tried gateron linear and topre (the smooth linear after bump), mx red is never linear anymore. After that, I sold my mx red keyboard right away. Side note, lubing doesn't help because the inherent rough surface of the slider.

If you want something lighter than reds, you can try gateron clear which is crazy light. I liked it but resting fingers sometimes trigger the switch and I was annoyed by it. I suggest getting gateron clear, change the spring with Sprit 55g, and if you want a bit heavier than that, use cherry case instead of gateron case. I actually use this setup, cherry switch case + gateron clear slider + 55g sprit spring. I recommend Topre 45g, if you haven't tried it, that's the only light tactile switch that I like. Although I, once in a blue moon, use blue switch just for the click noise  ;D.

So i thought i'd clear some misconceptions up here... I'm not sure where the photo of the short spring thing came from but thats now what the production "silvers" have from what i'm seeing they are using the regular "light" (red/blue) 45?g spring that is normal size. For the person that asked about "can I put a cherry clear spring in it?" yes. works fine, feels good. Heres some photos:

Just for kicks, i also lubed up and swapped in a 62g spring for the red silent... yum.  ;D I think i know what i'm going to do with my Mira.

Yea I think I accidently mixed up the springs or stems somehow when I was doing the pic, and since I was already thinking they were I didn't question it. I probably should of marked the springs or made sure to be more careful keeping them apart. I'm guessing the picture I saw was the Nature Whites or another heavy switch and Silent Reds but who knows. Although I had never noticed the the heavier MX switches are actually shorter than the Red ect springs.

I actually noticed the silvers I had felt heavy the other day when I was messing with them and figured I might switched them up when I was putting them back together or taking the pictures, and was meaning to check into it more.

Side Note: Be careful opening the RGB Cherry switches as I broke a switch tops clip opening one.

yeah i've also noticed the new rgb compatible cherry housings are stiffer. Theres mention in the video from CES about the silent switches that the bottoms are fiber reinforced now as well. I've also confirmed the new housings have no slop in the tolerances so no need for stickers... unless you're like me and think they might save some switches from a liquid spill one day.

Ah!

I'm not a switch expert like you guys are but wouldn't that explain why the silver switch is indeed stiffer than the red switch (the force charts published by WASD seem to confirm that also)? I mean you have the same cN/length of spring except in the case of silver switches, you get 0.6mm shorter travel distance to compress that spring resulting in more resistance?

Spring rate would only be impacted by the switch stem if it was being pre-compressed in its "resting" state. My best guess is that the only part of the silver stem that is LONGER is just those tabs at the bottom that in turn will make the switch bottom out sooner creating the shorter travel. I can confirm that the silent stem has in fact a bit of the rubber up in the socket for the spring. But not enough for someone to tell the difference.

Perhaps the stats are old red vs. new silent?
I am positive the springs between the new silver and new silent red are the same. Just for science I will confirm the regular rgb red and black case reds are also the same new bronzed "light" (45'ish gram) weighted spring.

I got a few with my Vortex 22-key switch-tester/numpad from Massdrop. It came with a bunch of new switches we cant seem to buy elsewhere yet: Silvers, Silent reds, Silent Blacks, new blacks, and all in both black and clear housings.

For my red 'silents' i commandeered them from a commission job switch swapping a Corsair Strafe to Gateron Greens. I haven't found a "quick silver" thats reasonably priced yet to harvest from. I'm not really interested in them for a whole board but I might try using them for my handwired game pad on the wasd.

Yea and the problem is that if you harvest them out of any current boards, they're probably black tops instead of those cool clear tops that come with the RGB's...We'll just have be patient!! It will be like the ole' 7Bit days! MUAHAHAHA

Are these shorter throw switches available in a tactile switch?  I will say that typing on a scissor switch adds about 15wpm to my typing speed.

I've tried them and sincerely hate the silicon balls inside the bottom of the stem's tube, but, they reduce the full travel and reduce the sound and ping to near nothing. While reading the features of these new silver's most comment sound like reds with something at the bottom of the stem's tube, let say silicon balls.  :))

That would be silent reds I think, silvers just have a shorter travel. Silent Reds and Blacks have that weird bottom out feeling. Now that I think, silicon balls mushiness explain the feeling perfectly. Not rubbery and more firmer.

Those expecting more WPM with silvers will probably be disappointed. The difference is way more in feel than in performance.

I've owned a K70 with reds and a K70 with silvers for a full month and have done close to 100 typing tests comparing them. I've scored identical results (top speed of 104 WPM with reds and 103 WPM with silvers).

The difference is really minor and like I said is more in feel and comfort than in true performance or faster typing experience. In fact, double tapping a key is even slower on silvers than it is on reds due to the actuation travel vs total travel. Add to this the very light but noticeable higher spring resistance of silvers compared to reds and fractions of millimeters travel difference and it honestly gives you pretty much the same results.

I've kept my K70 with reds and returned my K70 with silvers after that trial month.

Talking about fast switches, are any keyboards made with Omrom (mouse) switches?
How would these compare?
The short travel and quiet click would make them the best switches for me.

How are these compared to blacks? I am using reds now and I am just making way to many typos with my fat fingers when compared to my old board with black switches.

I will let you know very soon. I should be trying the board by september 18th so i'll let you know at that time ok :)

Me again! Currently typing this on MX Silver as we speak (Ducky One Side Print TLK MX Silver). It's good, very good. This new iteration of MX switch is very refreshing.

While it took a moment to get used to it, the threshold (lower in mm, higher physically) gets comfortable fast. Very fast. For the light touch-type kind of typist in here, it is really something you should consider.

It's a linear switch that offers little resistance like the MX Red yet it bottoms out before the actuation point (tactile nod) of an MX Brown. That means it is to be considered very much like a tactile switch, where the actual tactile feedback is bottoming out. I think Cherry realized most people just bottom out on the keyboard, therefore raised the threshold and that what you end up with.

Versus my current favorite (MX Brown), it feels somewhat home, as instead of the tactile register bump, you bottom out (a little sooner). It's MX after all, therefore i expected it to be very similar.

The claim of faster input is definitely true; you can feel the difference from the get go. Well, you SEE it mostly. It's hard to explain; as i type this, checking the text appearing on the screen, it's not the same pace as with the other MX Brown keyboard. I have no noticeable difference in WPM in between this board and the previous one (MX Brown), yet the text appears more smoothly, faster than previous.

As i read my previous paragraph i understand it sounds confusing lol, but i am having a hard time explaining the difference.

The input is registered faster but bottoming out sooner doesn't magically make me type faster. Does that make sense?

Oh but one really annoying issue is that whenever i try to press a if i get a little on its left side i might turn on caps lock involuntarily. As it requires very few travel distance to activate the thing, a slight bump does it. Therefore MX Silver is prone to input mistake. That being said, if you aren't very accurate with your typing, MX Silver isn't for you,

On a final/side note, the Ducky One board feels superb. High quality keycaps, high quality casing, well written documentation and the possibility to have every keys as a macro key is nice. It looks classy (white side print on black pbt) and the built in functions are cool. It can emulate a mouse also lol.

Two heights feet are cool too, and there's a route for the Micro-USB Cable if you want it either on the left or right. Overall great board, i highly recommend it. The price is right, just like the poker.

It also came with a set of blue keys for ESC/Enter/Backspace/arrow keys/numpad enter (even on the TKL board).

I guess that's it. Any questions feel free to ask!
