Quake Champions Beta
« on: Fri, 28 April 2017, 08:21:55 »
So I haz been playing the Quake Champions Beta.

It's ok, bit boring. Like Doom 2016 multiplayer. It's fast paced, guess 120% viewing angle by default, or so it looks. But weapons are not as intense as Q3, nor are the sounds. Don't get that satisfaction when I kill somebody. People don't explode too gory bits and pieces.

But yeah... guess it's better than not having a hardcore FPS game in 2017.

Has Geekhack been playing the Quake Champions Beta? What do you think?

been playing for an hour or two, so far i'm enjoying it, i guess. i think i'd still rather play quake live though, shame it has no players. i can see that they're trying to follow the hot new game model of having crates and real money currency

not really getting a fluid gameplay feeling from it. enemies appear laggy (network lag, not fps lag) at times, despite us both having <20ms ping. same weapons, but each hero (which must be purchased) has a unique ability with a cooldown. if they wanted variation, i personally would have preferred new weapons honestly, not abilities. when every character is unequal, there will be balance issues and scissors-paper-rock issues

going to still give it more of a chance though

the problem is the $60 aspect

Sell this thing for $20...

Then promote it with $100,000 prize money per tournament..  That's how you get the game going..

Otherwise, people just login to play their csgo for drops.

*sigh* i wish I could get into csgo. My reflexes aren't good anymore. I was da bomb in cs 1.6 when I was like 14. Then I was like "yolo **** videogames i all grown up now gonna get some university education and become rockstar with moneys"

and yeah... then my gaming skills all went downhill. SO SAD //killmenow

+1 to QL being better. I'd be on the fence buying it for more than $20 given that they want you to pay to unlock heroes afterwards.

I like the idea of abilities more than I thought I would, but the RL doesn't feel right. It's all very Q4.

I wish, though not found of the hero trend in the slightest. Heard there is/will be a classic mode, not in beta yet?

World really does need a hardcore shooter with modern splash of paint though.

I still don't get the use of hero's. Why WHY. I mean you know it's such a pity. "Yes we'll make a classic shooter like Q3" And then they "innovate" it until it becomes trash.

Bummer. Can expect champs being held back from launch and more milking. If 'runes' are in game challenges, I wont expect much from any team modes.

Toxikk had a similar approach and still wound up dead  :-[

That's great. It'll ensure a lot of people try it out at least, and hopefully they can generate some sales from there.

Doom MP was great, but it definitely got monotonous quickly... and that's coming from someone who played a LOT of Quake and UT over the years. They just didn't have much variety IMO.

Well what differences are you seeing in the new quake vs doom,   that is more compelling and engaging.

It is fun, but not $60.00 of fun. On the beta there was no teamwork. It was just anothe fps death match.

that's what i liked about doom.

Teamwork is really stupid, if you have no friends...    I guess for younger crowd in school, they're generally going to have friends..

But for most people out of school,  Tp4s pretty much don't have any friends..

Funny you should mention that... from their email this morning:
Quote
Sacrifice is the new team-based, 4-v-4 competitive mode in Quake Champions. Requiring team coordination in Champion selection, strategy development, and in-game play, Sacrifice will be the primary team competitive mode for all major esports tournaments.

The game itself has potential, a few of the right changes and it could be really good. And I'm interested to see how this new mode plays out.

I also have a few beta keys left if anyone is interested.

I don't think it has anything to do with modes..

None of these fpses are all that different,   But esport promotional aspect is going to be key..

People have to believe that they're destined for --Greatness--  while playing this game,  EVEN IF 99.9% will never go beyond casual..

They need to pay a couple teams those million dollar prizes..  It's a fantasy land..

So you can still pay up front and unlock everything it seems like? Playing whatever free champion is in rotation each week seems awful.

Bit of confusion in here.

- You can play the game for free, and receive one champion to use.

-You can purchase the game(rumored $60), this gives you access to ALL current champions, and ALL champions released in the future.

- You can 'rent' any champion for 24 hours using 'Favor', which is an in game currency earned by playing games, completing challenges etc.

- Game contains 3 different tiers of loot boxes. Lowest tier is purchased with 'Favor'(in game currency), middle and highest tier can only be purchased with 'Platinum'(currency purchased with real world $, unknown rate currently).

- Any champion can be purchased forever using  'Platinum'(Real world $)

- Champions have a rare chance of dropping in all 3 crate tiers.

In my opinion this is a good business model and appeals to the 'F2P' player, or people just wanting to buy the game and not worry about renting or earning things.

Pretty solid gameplay in the quake style..

But it's not super different from Doom..  if people didn't like doom..  I'm not seeing what would win them over here..

The game starts out kind of choppy , but then gets smooth..

Does this have to do with texture cache.

What most people wanted from Doom MP was actual twitch-shooter gameplay, which Doom was not. It was like some ****ty hybrid of slower shooters like CS with twitch-like weapons and maps.

So I think Quake is going to do a lot better than Doom did, personally, based solely on the people who are actually looking for a modern twitch-shooter.

But it's still unlikely to gain the popularity of CS or even Overwatch simply because twitch-shooters just aren't as popular with the casual gaming crowd.
