The Vortex blanks that I have are pretty thick.

And I think the Gateron blanks are rather thick too.

I think Imsto makes pretty thick keycaps. If that isnt thick enough you could get some nail lube and get the cap so thick.

Any cherry profile PBT.

Best would be BSP but it's pretty much impossible to get right now.

The geekkeys ones? I didn't measure them and I no longer have them, but they felt different. Maybe it's because they are OEM profile.

how much would a solid cap weigh, 10g?

will reduce the force needed to press de key

Would most likely increase it, considering if it was solid you literally couldn't actuate the switch.  :p

Leopold is the thickest I've gotten averaged out, with Vortex and Gateron are around the same with only a very small difference .011mm and BSP isn't the thickest, just the smoothest. I've never had a Ducky set so im not sure on their thickness but they're OEM so I don't like them personally.

I've got some bad news though if you love thick PBT, I've heard the costar stabilizers catch/rub on thick PBT like Leopold so without filing down I can't say they wont. Filing down the insides where the stabilzers cause the rubbing on stabilized keys is common enough fix to that.

BSP I'd doubt would be too thick as it's 1.3mm to the 1.38mm of Vortex/Gateron and 1.53mm of Leopold. Do you want more or less texture? Vortex being smooth(not the smoothest) and IIRC Ducky having some texture or roughness.

I seem to recall the caps that IMSTO got from BSP were something like 1.8mm thick.

My gateron and BSP caps are both 1.39-1.46mm thick (it varies from cap to cap and the wall you measure)

My OG Cherry dyesubs are 1.5-1.58mm thick (same as the gat/bsp)

1.8mm wall thickness for production caps is absurd

Maybe the BSP caps I measured were on the low side of the allowed tolerance but they seemed thinner than OG Cherry caps.

I think they were actually thinner than 1.5mm in the first place. I've never measured them myself.

I have some BSPs coming in tomorrow. I will mic them and let you know. I guess I was mistaken in regards to IMSTO's caps. Just fyi though, 1.8mm isn't that crazy. MT3s are 1.8mm thick.

I should've specified Cherry profile when I said that.

MT3s are basically SA, the thickest part of the walls on my SA caps are 2+ mm.

I'm wondering whether solid caps exist... just solid.

Keycaps aren't empty to save material, but to allow you to press them down, you know. There could be a thicker top layer, on some rows, but that is all.

I'm in a same boat as OP. I'm also looking for a high quality 1.5mm thick keycaps (preferably black dysub or front printed letters) for my TeamWolf TKL keyboard with 6.5g R5 Zealio switches. Money is no issue for me. I don't know which profile is the best for Zealio switches but I'm guessing it's Cherry? Here's what I'm considering:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PBT-Keycap-Set-for-Cherry-MX-based-Leopold-Keyboard-Blank-Non-Printed-Navy-/281664522419 < The seller is currently away. But I'm hoping that he's going to sell the black color, preferably with front printed letters
http://www.geekkeys.com/geekkeys-dark-grey-dyesub-thick-pbt-full-keyset/ < I've heard that these are made by gateron and if that's true, I'd rather get this over Gateron Blanks
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1652

I've heard that Leopold keycaps is the only one with the average of 1.5mm keycaps while gateron is 1.3mm: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=71690.msg1754614#msg1754614

So I'm leaning more towards Leopold.

I've also heard good things about IMSTO, GMK and BSP keycaps.

Which one should I go with? And are there any other high quality keycaps that's 1.5mm thick and has black dysub or front printed letters?

I've lusted after IMSTO's blank grey set after seeing them on a 356CL DGE...

I believe these are made by Gateron. So, I'd recommend those (Gateron blanks) since they're more available and wallet-friendly. I personally prefer OG Cherry/BSP but I think that's a bit overkill for what you're going for.

Pretty sure like every Cherry-profile PBT dyesub set out there right now is printed on Gaterons? So unless you're looking for BSP or OG just pick what's priced well and looks good. Difference between Leopold and Gat has got to be minimal, right?

The MT3 prototypes I'm typing on right now measure 2mm (or very close to it). These are easily the thickest keycaps I've ever typed on. I don't know if the final /dev/tty keycaps will be the same, but I would expect them to be at least 1.5mm if not more.

I will throw in another vote for Vortex.

Also, I picked up this set: https://originative.co/products/classic-black. Very good quality and someone measured them at 1.5mm in the comments. They appear to be as thick as (if not thicker than) my Vortex keycaps. You said that you wanted blanks. Black on black is almost like blanks... as long as you want / are ok with cherry profile.

Mah Filco Majestouch 2 with Silent Reds gonna arrive tomorrow...
I got myself a genuine FILCO too yay. Ninja model, black, Cherry MX black.

For our reference, the 104 front-printed caps weigh 112g (grams). The kitchen scale was jumping between 113 and 112, which means that the weight is ~112.5g, minus the ~1g for the plastic bag, and we're getting 112g, rounded up! Everybody with FILCO caps please feel free to measure weight too.

The thickness of these caps are 0.87mm or 0.93mm or 0.90mm, i often get these same readings when checking several caps, the spacebar, etc. So i am assuming that the nominal thickness of the caps is 0.90mm. Also, as with most plastic material, the black keycap surface is easily scratched, for example with a finger nail, which leaves a darker/shinier mark on the black "textured" finish. Maybe even worse, when i look through the keycap out of my window, i can see that the material is less dark-transparent, i.e. it is even thinner (argh!), at the 'bottom of the MX stem holder' (if you know what i mean). And that 'bottom', on the opposite side, is exactly where we place our fingers, namely in the middle of each cap! In other words, the keycap is the thinnest (=much less than 0.90mm!) in the center of each keycap, i.e. exactly where the switch stem is located omfg. What can i say? So far i am not impressed with my genuine FILCO.

As you can see, the rest of the board including the stabilizers plus the white thingies weighs 1098g. For a total weight of 1210g. Again, not impressed. For comparison purposes, my (white) FILCO knockoff weighs 1266g total and has 1.15mm thick keycaps, full RGB, PBT double shot backlit and cost only 70bucks shipped. With some luck i should receive my new blue-white keycap set, supposedly 1.4mm thick, also PBT double shot backlit, next week. The tracking of my AX shipment looks promising.

While i am proud of owning a famous brand keyboard, i also feel that the product could and should offer more for the price. Afaik FILCO prices are only that high because the company is Japanese, and Japanese wages/salaries plus import/export procedures plus cost of middlemen/distributors artificially augment the price for the end consumer in the West. The retail box says "MADE IN TAIWAN", but since Taiwan are 100% Chinese, the product was made in a Chinese factory etc and imho one should not think of it as being higher quality as we like to think of genuine Japanese products (Casio, Seiko, Japanese pens, Japanese swords/knives/blades, Toyota) or Korean products (Leopold, Samsung).

I will weigh my white stock caps and weigh&measure the new blue-white caps as soon as i get the latter set in, probably within 1 week. My pleasure my contribution.

So I needda get myself some new caps.

I tried Ducky caps, I tried Vortex caps. Is there anything thicker out there that I am not aware of?

I want REALLY REALLY THICK PBT caps, preferably blanks.

I think Ducky is the thickest among the modern PBT, they feel even a tiny bit thicker than Gateron to me. Other than that you may have to go the vintage and non-MX router to find the even thicker PBT caps.

Just trying to keep the facts straight, that's all. I even backed it up with photographic evidence, which nobody else has seen fit to do.

I would argue that claims like "Ducky is the thickest among the modern PBT" is way more of a marketing move because not only does it sound like a marketing pitch, it's not accurate.

All righty, you won both arguments :P

I haven't provided photos but I've been measuring with calipers, not a ruler  :p
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Yeah, that's a better method. Unfortunately, I don't own a set of calipers. A close-up shot of a ruler will have to suffice.

Does Vortex print on Gaterons?

If I remember correctly, I think I read somewhere that they are different.

please could anyone make a clear description of how LEOPOLD PBT 1.5mm keycaps feel and perform?

I mean, do they have a textured surface, or do they feel grippy? Or would you claim that they feel similar to any other China-made ABS or PBT keycaps, i.e. smooth and rather slippery?

I don't like slippery keycap surfaces, i would prefer more grip.
i found that the thin black ABS keycaps by Razer and Corsair have friction surfaces and are not as slippery as the several PBT keycap builds i've tried so far.

Any comment in detail?

The gaterons I'm typing on are akin to ceramic. I've never felt anything better.

OG Cherry POM maybe? Same 1.5mm thickness but denser than PBT.

I have a FC980M and I really like its keycaps. They felt a bit strange at first, but the more I use them, the more I like them. I especially enjoy how they sound and feel. The surface of these keycaps has almost no texture or maybe it's very subtle. However, they are different from normal cheap abs keycaps, because they feel like touching a matt surface. I do not have much experience to compare them to other keycaps. I don't find that they are slippery nor grippy. They are just right.

Sounds very positive, thanks so much for your detailed explanation/description, appreciated!  :-*

I certainly have no concerns about buying a Poldi. The price seems fair enough too. I'll be broke afterwards though  :-[

Right now i am typing on my new AX keycaps (double shot, translucent, PBT, nominal 1.4mm) and they're an improvement over the stock. I took a couple of cr*ppy photos of them, so i'll better open a new thread for a mini review.

Anyway I am eyeing with the Poldi mkb, even though i am veli satisfied with my current FLICO knockoff wiv de AX keycaps.

( FZYI AX = aliexpress )
