What I don't get is, it's basically a split Model M2, and everyone knows how relatively crappy they are... So what's the deal? Rarity hysteria? The "I have one and you don't" thing?

It must be awfully funny when a thrift store in Shoetree, Iowa puts something like this online expecting to get a few bucks for it, not realizing how many peeps are out there with rarity fixations, rich parents, and little interest in philanthropy.

Well this sold for US $1,260.70! Not too surprising given the starting bid. At that price I would consider emptying my warehouse of these  ;D

Holy cow! So what do you do after paying over $1200 for a NIB keyboard? Open it? Just look at the box?
