Noob with Noob questions
« on: Sat, 20 April 2013, 14:47:39 »
Hey everyone,
I'm new here!
I was drawn in by the sticky thread about keyboard mechanisms, and I have an awesome buckling spring IBM keyboard that I've grown very attached to over the years;.
I've been lurking for a while and already have tons of questions, mainly because I'm a sucker for gadget envy.
I hope some of you answer them:
  • What's the difference between ISO and ANSI
  • What makes the Phantom so good?
  • Is there a standard way to order custom keysets? Is there a standard key diagram sheet? What about requesting plastic color samples? (for double-shot keys)
  • What about making trays/layout plates/pcb design?
  • Can someone explain stabilizers to me?
  • Is the PCB for the phantom open source hardware? Is the firmware for the teensy GPL?

Feel free to link me to things if there are good resources, obviously I'm looking to make a very customized keyboard, but maybe I'll design some keysets for group buys, help me get my feet wet!
Anyways, glad to be a part of the community!

I can't answer all of your questions but I think I can answer these atleast:

1. http://deskthority.net/wiki/ANSI_vs_ISO
3. You just look around, find something you like, and then check if it's compatible with your keyboard. Here's the keycap compatibility FAQ for WASD Keyboards keysets for example: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=30141.0
