CM Storm Recon - The new fingertip grip mouse?
« on: Sun, 05 August 2012, 03:44:59 »
http://www.cmstorm.com/en/products/peripherals/Recon/

I've heard rumour about this a while back, but now it finally look like it's close to being released.  Personally I'm a claw grip user but in general I do like small mouse that I can pick up easily.  This one the front part looks like it flare in so it's easy to pick up, but the back part flare out so I'm not sure how it is in practice.  Though 11.6 cm length seems a bit bigger than what I like but still fairly small I guess.  (Spawn/Xornet is 10.7 cm and it is the perfect size for me)

It also come with multi-color adjustable LEDs (usually only found on top end gaming mice).  Considering it's an optical I hope the price range will be under $50 when it goes on sale.

I've been waiting for a nice small fingertip / claw grip gaming mouse with forward/back buttons and hopefully this one will be able to deliver :P

Another video of it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehfOWqph67I&feature=player_detailpage#t=375s

Depending on how much this mouse weighs, and the ergonomics i may have to give it a try (looking at it though in the video in scale with the cm quickfire, it doesn't look that small but remains to be seen).

+1 on wanting to know the weight...lightness is quite important in a fingertip grip mouse, at least in my experience.

I never heard of it.  Strangely enough their website lists it as a palm grip mouse.  I'll see about getting a review sample.

Yeah that's what I find weird too, listed as Palm but I know prior to release it was advertised as fingertip grip.  But the arch does look a bit tall so I guess hard to tell until it's released

I just wish it was a bit flatter in height, but I guess I'll wait till it comes out to judge.  However I'm very interested in the price, hopefully it will be around $40.  Where's Carter when we need him lol

I wonder if that is the same type of rubberized coating that is applied to many Logitech mice.  It looks and feels great for the first month, then it quickly turns to finger grease crap that can't be cleaned (at least I haven't found a way without leaving lint, etc. all over it).

Digging a little deeper, I found a document that lists the weight as 139g. Considering that it's also 116.4mm long, it doesn't sound like a fingertip grip mouse at all.

Based on the size comparison it looks kinda big :(  Spawn/Xornet was a perfect size for me now this just look like a palm grip mouse sighhhhhh

EDIT:  Seems like this might be similar size to Kana, kinda like the half way point mouse

wow recon is disappoint, i'll just say right off the bat, without touching it, it sucks, i mean it's bigger than the spawn and almost the same size as the addler (i have and use both), i don't want an in between i want the recon to be 70% smaller.

I think he mentioned he has it already.  For me I own a Xornet (same shape) and there are a few reasons why I'd want to try Recon:

1. Multi-Color LEDs (LOL I know it's useless but I can't help it)
2. No ring finger bump, while that doesn't really bug me (I got used to it and it is comfy).  But ideally I still like to pick up my mouse with thumb + ring finger. (Especially for fingergrip people, though I'm more like claw)
3. The dpi steps seems a bit better, Xornet has weird steps like 500, 1000, 2000.  While Recon has 800, 1600, 3200, 4000, and 1600 is a good step for me.
4. While I grew up using symmetrical mouse so somehow those feel more nimble and precise. (But I'll agree Xornet is still super comfy to use)

true, with the spawn/xornet you "live with" the weird ring finger bump.

Well I know this is released everywhere else in the world except north america since Carter said he doesn't want to launch it until it's ready.  Though technically they can still import it from other places I think... lol suspense is killing me, it's like so close yet so far.

It sounds like you would probably like the Roccat Savu a lot. It isn't symmetrical, but it's not very asymmetrical either.

lol I thought about it before but surprisingly it's pretty hard to find Roccat products in Canada.  Though it's ok looks like this is out now haha.

look nice and small now I'm just wondering if it would be easy to pick up, because the side button do look a bit close to where you'd pick up the mouse.  I'll find out soon lol.

hold up, hold up, does this have angle snapping?

CM Storm Recon?  No angle snapping/prediction.  And it uses a modified DeathAdder/Abyssus sensor (forgot actual name), so basically DeathAdder/Abyssus uses infrared, the Recon uses the normal red light.

There's a few reviews online that explains it but I forgot where I read it, ask google lol.

Ah, I see, they really gotta update that "sensors" guide on OCN... Recon is not on the "angle snapping removed" list.  ^-^

I know, it's OCN, but that's the only list.

I didn't mind the look but I was hoping the size / shape would be what I'm looking for.  So I bought it today to try it out but I find it's a little bigger than what I liked.

It's actually about same length as Razer Naga but the "butt" kind of flare out at the back also the curve from top to bottom is kind of squared and wide.  So even though dimensionally this is similar to Rager Naga but when you hold it it feels a lot bigger.  Definitely more for palm grip.

I have small hands but at least with Razer Naga I can still claw grip it.  With CM Storm Recon it feels like it's just a tad bit too big to claw comfortably.  Maybe I'll have to wait for the next version of Spawn / Xornet  :(

Picture here shows example comparing Recon to Razer Naga Hex and Mionix Naos 3200.

So you can see even though it's pretty close in size with Naga, but its boxy shape make it actually feel wider and bigger.

Even though the side is grey, it's actually fully rubber coated through out, it's actually very comfy.  Softer than Razer's rubber coating.

Yeah this mouse looks pretty interesting. I like the matte coating on top, and the fact that it's small.  ;)

Did anyone use this mouse successfully on W8 64 with altered profiles uploaded to the mouse and FW 1.10?
...because i'm trying to figure if the one i had to send back was actually faulty or if my mainboard has picky usb ports.

p.s: im a semi claw/palm gripper and i liked the shape (and price) very much, just didn't get it to work...

Edit: figured that pos recon software out: you must not have less than 2 extra profiles on the mouse, also you need to set lod to max for it to track on a desktop - bah what a chore to get past this..

Its very nearly a excellent replacement for a MX310 - everything but the actual shape of the mouse is good if not excellent.

Excluding the mess that is of course the mouse configuration software, that is.

The weight is ALOT more than I expected ; worse I've checked three different documents, with three different values for the weight (between 139g and 160 G???), Perhaps there is some metal ballast on the inside I can remove.

It tracks on gritty / lumpy desks far better than the old logitech, and the scroll wheel is a work of art.
The two main mouse buttons I do find are easily bumped or accidentally hit, and the right side buttons basically need to be disabled as they are pressed accidentally far too often.

So out of the box, its so-so; with a few setting tweaks its better. If this were a review I'd deduct at least 2 points out of ten for just that atrocious default setting alone. Its takes a little bit of getting used to the different shape - but being as its nearly the same length and width as the MX310 and just a tad higher its still a very close match for a fingertip gripper.

If this is a non-angle snapping, non-accelerating mouse, is it a worthy replacement for a g400? I think the recon may be a better shape for my claw grip.  Anyone who has been using them for a while, how have they held up? Do you still like them?

I agree with you. I haven't found a real solution (at least when I was using non-trackball mice), but I simply cannot stand rubber coatings. They feel nice only when new - and in the hot country where I live, they get nasty in 1 month.

I wonder if that is the same type of rubberized coating that is applied to many Logitech mice.  It looks and feels great for the first month, then it quickly turns to finger grease crap that can't be cleaned (at least I haven't found a way without leaving lint, etc. all over it).
