Submitted.thanks for actually letting me know. anyone who's ordered already please send me you paypal
No paypal in the form?
How does this work? Can we just put a poker 2 without case into this "case", or do I have to build a keyboard around the case by sourcing my own PCB?yep, you could just stick your poker pcb into this. You would obviously need to desolder and resolder the switches into the plate though.
Ordered.check the more tag at the bottom. I'm actually going to be doing a grey to match the side of the cf
But just wondering if we could get a mock up of the keyboard with the acrylic layer.
Hesitation, Hesitation ...dooo eeeeet
This looks great! The HHKB style case is missing the left and right Ctrl holes on the bottom right?yessir, same layout as any other happy board

Correct :thumb:Stupid question but the one shown in the renders is the standard case right? This looks great! The HHKB style case is missing the left and right Ctrl holes on the bottom right?yessir, same layout as any other happy board
If someone could point me in the direction of a HHKB layout PCB I'd order the case pretty soon... Thanks!Since you're only remove the 2 keys on the sides of the bottom row any 60% keyboard should do, check GON pcb or Winkeyless for exemple.

What's the timeline like for this group buy? After May 20th are we thinking this is going to take 2 months, 3 months? Just curious...This question got answered on the DT thread :
Any renders of the happy layout case? Is actually happy style with 1.5 + 1 keys at the bottom or are just the two corner 1.25 keys removed?
It'll be the proper, actual HHKB layoutAny renders of the happy layout case? Is actually happy style with 1.5 + 1 keys at the bottom or are just the two corner 1.25 keys removed?
It should be 1u x 1.5u x 7u x 1.5u x 1u right? With two 1.5u spaces not having holes for switches in the corners. At least that was my impression. Maybe I'm wrong?

Any chance you'll add holes on the bottom plate for feet?with the current design bumpons are really the only thing that makes sense.
The layouts for the happy case are 1, 1.5, 7, 1.5, 1 and 1.25, 1.25, 7, 1.25, 1.25. If there is another bottom row layout that I should add then let me know.Good, if it was the 6u HHKB layout it would be a deal breaker for me, will be joining with that knowledge :thumb:
The plate is universal so it will work with every layout.

Been looking at the GON PCB... it seems that PCB has some fitment issues if you get the add-on wireless module, you think the GON PCB with the Bluetooth module can fit in this case?
Would it be easy to transfer a Pok3r into this case?Yes and no you would need to desolder every switch and led in order to remove the plate and install it in the CF plate
The supported layouts for the happy case are 1, 1.5, 7, 1.5, 1 and 1.25, 1.25, 6.25, 1.25, 1.25, 1.25. There are probably more because it's the same universal bottom row that the normal case uses and the GH60 has some weird bottom row options but the two I listed were the ones I had it mind making the case. I could add the proper 6u space option if there's interest but I don't really see a point to adding a useless spacebar option.

Yeah 6u is fairly pointless considering most keysets come with 6.25u and 7u spacebars.

EDIT: last question, how does the PBC actually attach to the case?
Not dumb questions to be asking. I'm curious about your first question as well.
Specific to the build though, the top plate is where the PCB is attached. The top and the plate are one in the same.
The CTRLALT 60 and GON Keyboard Works are all the same minimal design.
Does the PCB attach to the top plate via screws and standoffs (in which case, where are the female ends in the top plate?), or do the key-switches attach to the plate in such a way that it holds the PCB in place? If that's the case, do I need to get plate-mounted switches (and not PCB mounted ones?).
I'm thinking the GON PCB (& supported hardware) will be the way to go with this enclosure.

No. The standoffs that you see in the mockup up help support the plate, but it's the switches sandwiched between the plate and the PCB that "mounts" it.
You can order extra plates separate from the case. Got it (so PCB mounted switches will be okay here).
Now I need to figure out what's up w/ the "extra" case on the GB form.

I think the Happy plate would work with it if you choose the standard layout. You'll just need to leave the two switches on the bottom left and right off when building it.
But you don't think the standard layout would work with the standard plate?
Have you done any mock-ups to ensure durability?
A bit of both, i'm unsure how a plate of CF will handle being pressed down upon, as i've never held a 1.5mil plate, and i want to know if it starts wearing/shredding at the edges.the nice thing about carbon fiber is that it's known for its strength, so typical alum (or better) plate feel and no real risk of wear under normal usage conditions
I'd rather it not separate after a few months of usage.

So I don't have any insider information about BigBlueSaw's carbon material, but most of this kind of work is done on 3k plain weave, and this is 1.5 mil. An uncut plate of 1.5 mil CF of this type will have very little give to it; it will not fray or come apart at the edges. You can take the edge and drag it along concrete and it will get scratched and worn down but it will not fray and I've never seen it chip. So, as far as the bottom plate goes, I think you can rest easy.
With the top plate, that applies to the edges as well. Should be no chipping, separation, fraying, etc. over time. I am indeed interested to see how cutting all the switch holes in the top plate will affect its rigidity. I'm not worried about it cracking or breaking under normal use. At all. I just think that it might have a bit of "springyness" to it. Of course, you have the bottom plate, pcb, and possibly the optional middle piece to reinforce and stabilize it so I don't think it will be too noticeable.
Hope that helps.

Well I was just out in the garage looking for my CF stock so I could show you guys some pics of 1.5mm CF plate.
But I moved a few months ago and everything is in boxes, etc. Almost got crushed under a pile while trying to scoot the bottom box out so I could see what was written on it. And never found my CF!

Sorry for the continuous questions... can this board utilize plate mounted switches?
Sorry for the continuous questions... can this board utilize plate mounted switches?
It's probably physically possible to clip in plate mount switches at the top and bottom of each cutout. However, you're going to want a PCB for stability, as the large cutouts will allow switches to shift. This is mostly an issue with the larger cutouts for modifiers, and less of an issue around the alphas.
FYI carbon fiber is conductive so you'll want to have a sheet of plastic or something between your PCB and your bottom plate.

It can't be that good of a conductor...I know the Boeing 787 they add a copper mesh to the CFRP layup stack in order to ensure there is enough conduction in the event of a lighting strike. That said, even a crappy conductor could result in a bad day here... I'll have to see what kind of clearance I have when it's all mounted.

What about aluminum cases and such, is there typically an insulator for PCBs in such configurations as well? A lot of top plates are also metal, though I'm thinking this is strictly about the bottom of the case touching all the business.

Awesome. So it still supports the 1x 1.5x 7x 1.5 x 1x too right? When you say flipped enter stabilizers these are the holes for cherry stabs?
Hum OK I was wondering because an opaque mid piece is less appealing to me than a milky one. Finally found my "box o random CF plates". Closest thing I could find to 1.5mm 3k plain weave was 1.05mm 0-90 uni. The different weave shouldn't make any difference in this case. The fact that it's 33% thinner does make it less rigid.

With two full dr pepper cans on top and the ~9" plate suspended at the very ends, there is a less than 1mm bend in the middle.
Obviously this is not scientific but I do this to show some of the folks who are not so familiar with CF how strong a material it is.
Although this is a thin and simple case it should be plenty rugged for all of us. :thumb:

I did a laboratory grade tensile strength test using a quality assurance jig used by aerospace companies.Show Image(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/25/1ba95e11c41469e80b2167a45672bd18.jpg)Show Image(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/25/b31e26f6e81a51b444acb293280ce48f.jpg)
:thumb:
If you don't post this to reddit.com/r/amateurengineering I will
Is there a possibility to put some feet under the case if we want a non flat board? Like holes for screws or something alike?
Yeah, you don't want to mess w/ the dust from that stuff. Rubber bump-ons will be the way to goIs there a possibility to put some feet under the case if we want a non flat board? Like holes for screws or something alike?
Not going to speak for the OP, but generally putting holes into CF should be avoided. Would definitely recommend stick-on feet.
Alright good to know thanks. Is it possible to find feet like the one on the RS84 with velcro or stick-on system?

A solution could be to use double face Velcro. You apply one hand on the feet and the other one on the bottom case. They usually come with a glued face.Alright good to know thanks. Is it possible to find feet like the one on the RS84 with velcro or stick-on system?

You could actually use those since they are hollow and don't have a screw sticking out. Just got to figure out a solution to """glue """ them at the bottom of the case.
I wonder if there would be delay for such little items.Alright good to know thanks. Is it possible to find feet like the one on the RS84 with velcro or stick-on system?

I can look on TB later. GONs shipping is usually $25.
I've also looked at conical feel for audio equipment but they are all too big or very expensive.

Alright, here's the part where I get to spend a year or so pulling together parts for my dream build. This is going to suck/be pretty awesome!
Man now I'm reallllly glad I picked up so many Gaterons from the last GB. Have a PCB I was going to throw in an aluminum case, but I think I'll wait now :thumb:

Awesome! Any idea of when we can get a look at the goods and when they're coming out?According to big blue saws general timeline, should be to me within 2-3 weeks
last two unpaid buyers have been removed, and we're on with the buy! I'll be putting in the order soon after a final review of everything. All shipping material is here so turnaround once the cases get to me shouldn't be more than 2-3 days barring any plans that remove me completely from the house

Sorry about that, order is being put in now. We had some problems with the actual files, but the buy is back on track :thumb: I have all shipping materials and spacers/screws here once I get the cases from big blue saw turnaround should only be a day or soCool! First and last time using BBS
invoice paid but I didn't understand that both the price of the case and the mid case were raised. That's pity indeed. Nevermind still looking for that case to arrive. Thanks for your work Hwood.Well I was trying to get the acrylic down to the original estimate but I could only lower it a tiny bit unfortunately.
Hwood, this stinks and we're disappointed but it's not your fault. Paid my invoice.
OK so not to get everyone's hope up, but I'm looking into a local place that opened up recently that is evidently cheap and does a really good job. I'll be back with details in few days
Nope. I said order was in because I was basically on the verge and was probably going to get it done later that day. But rest assured, all money is still safe with me :thumb:OK so not to get everyone's hope up, but I'm looking into a local place that opened up recently that is evidently cheap and does a really good job. :( Sad that I missed this groupbuy
Edit: I got a spot! Yay!
Patience is a virtue and one that I'm very happy to have with this buy. I'm sure hwood is doing what he can to make sure this goes smoothly! Hope all is well!
Just re-read my post, really didn't mean to be a ****!! I don't think I've ever been more excited over a group buy! Got the HHKB layout coming, going to throw GMK Hyperfuse on it with some lubed and stickered ergo-clear-gaterons. This might be end-game for me :thumb:
Let me first lay a disclaimer that I'm not trying to be a white knight, but I personally don't mind the wait. Everything else takes forever as it is. I have faith in hwood. I'm sure he must be doing what he can.I don't mind waiting (waited well over a year for another GB). However, updates would be appreciated. Even if nothing has happened.
Sorry about the lack of updates, I was just kinda waiting for anything new to happen before I postedIf you don't mind me asking what is the current hold up? Last update didn't indicate that manufacturing had started but you were awaiting another quote if I remember correctly.

It's a group buy, it is likely going to be awhile before you get the case. Group buys have taken over a year long for the product to get into the buyers' hands. I'm not saying this GB is going to take over a year but anytime you enter a GB you should understand that the dates the GB Leader gives are usually estimations. Also should be taken into account is that this GB is the first of it's kind, involving a carbon fiber case, there is a lot of design, testing, and manufacturing to be done to ensure that that the product is of high quality to ship out.

Problem here is that the delay has nothing to do with the design, testing or manufacturing. The delay seems to be coming from shopping around and awaiting updated prices, however revised quotes were sent out a month ago, on what I assumed was a higher than expected pricing from the original vendor. I was under the impression upon payment of the extra invoice, that manufacturing can begin through the original vendor.
I am a mechanical engineer, and routinely send parts out for quote for the quantities that are described here. It can definitely take a week or so to get a quote, but for a business to take a month to provide a quote, that is a sign that they are not interested in making the part and it is very unlikely that they will provide a quote that is competitive.
@hwood34 I know of some shops in the greater Portland area that are likely capable of doing this sort of work. If you want me to submit a drawing for quote, feel free to PM me and I can get some quotes at this end.
Would definitely need to be water cut, with the square interior corners, a CNC won't work well.OK so not to get everyone's hope up, but I'm looking into a local place that opened up recently that is evidently cheap and does a really good job. I'll be back with details in few days

I believe CF can't be laser cut and must be cut with water jet...not sure if that's just any water jet or something special.
Some CNC's can do it but they can chip it is the bits are not sharp enough, and the shape of our switch holes wouldn't work for CNC anyway I guess.
Obligatory request for update.
If BBS is up and running now, I for one wouldn't mind giving up possible savings to get them in to production sooner. Unless of course there are serious issues with their quality.
On a side note, what types of stabilizers will it take? Will I be able to retain my current Cherry PCB mounted ones? If not, can I stick Costar stabs on? If it won't take either, someone point me in the direction of Cherry plate mounts please! :)

It looks like Cherry plate mount to me, but I could be wrong.
Oh and excuse the double post but just wondering if you've confirmed the grey acrylic midpiece. If not, I'm imagining a clear frosted/diffused piece might look pretty amazing.Yup, trying to get it as close to the color of the cut side as possible

OK for real this time stay tuned for updates about the carbon fiber within the week. One thing I can say for sure is that BBS's acrylic piece price for some reason is actually a decent bit better than any other place I've gotten a quote from so we'll be ordering from them for that. So there is a definite there.

Can't wait! (The hype train saga part 4) :D
The order form was still open :P Does this mean I'm in on this? If not sorry for the spam hwood..Wow, can't believe I forgot to take that order form down lol. I mean since parts haven't been ordered yet there's no reason I can see to leave you out, I'll just wait to invoice once I get everything finalized
Just waiting on finalized PDFs to get this show on the road

Do you mean the quote is positive and they just wait on some inputs on your parts? :D

Yep, there was just one little weird thing with the quotes (a 30% price difference between regular and happy layout) but once I figure out what weird happened there, they just need all exact measurements and we should be good to go :thumb:

Ok cool thanks for your answers. I know nothing about making such quote nor what kind of files you need to provide them hence I was being a bit curious.

They prob know that HHKB users like to pay moreShow Image(https://s3.amazonaws.com/tapatalk-emoji/emoji12.png)
Could the price difference simply be that the HHKB has less switch slots to cut than the standard, and so is cheaper? I mean, it's not like 30% less cutting, mind you, so that is still a little weird. It's only like, four slots omitted, right? Yeah, that shouldn't create such a stark contrast in price.Yeah, I mean I was expecting a small difference, but as you said it's literally a difference of a few holes, shouldn't be so large.

While weight is one factor to prevent sliding, it's far from the only one. You could use 'softer' rubber feet, or rubber feet with greater contact patches to prevent sliding.I think one purpose of this GB was to make a lightweight case IIRC. Perhaps Hwood can comment on this as I may be mistaken.
Nobody has received this product yet, so we cannot comment on the weight of it.
Yeah, I definitely don't want a heavier than necessary enclosure, this will go into my portable keyboard which I'm going to be carrying around. While weight is one factor to prevent sliding, it's far from the only one. I guess one could design a bottom ALU or stain steel plate in order to make it heavier though. As it would be done on little quantity, it would be expensive I think.Yeah, I definitely don't want a heavier than necessary enclosure, this will go into my portable keyboard which I'm going to be carrying around. While weight is one factor to prevent sliding, it's far from the only one. yep, something light for portability, I guess theoretically you could just use some sort of adhesive to attach some weights if its absolutely too light, or something like lead tape for tennis or golfWhile weight is one factor to prevent sliding, it's far from the only one. Mechanical Engineer here, first of all, I don't see anything wrong with the drawings :)
I was going to ask if the manufacturers are receiving anything like a STEP file or DXF? These drawings are under-constrained, so they will need something describing the rest of the geometry.
I think I'm just not the target demographic for this. Which is a shame because I bet they are going to look gorgeous.

It's definitely not for everyone. I think it's a good value for what it is: an extremely niche product, made accessible for a reasonable price. For people who are willing to spend upwards of 200 dollars for hammer or mkc cases, this one is actually cheaper. It's even price competitive with TEX aluminum cases even with the acrylic mid piece. This case will definitely be one of the most unique around for a long time.

Since this is getting so close to fruition, would any one have any recommendations for shielding a pcb from the case? I know ngt mentioned using a sheet of rubber but would just a sheet of neoprene stuck to the bottom half work?
Wait why do we need insulating material between the pcb and case??? Isn't carbon fibre non-conductive anyway?I'm not sure why it would be needed either or at least I don't remember why. As the case is empty in the middle for those who didn't take the middle piece, the PCB should not be in contact with the bottom of the case, should it?

With a board that has an SMT controller using 3/8in spacers the usb ends up pretty close to the bottom plate but not enough to short.
Obligatory any updates?machining place is taking their sweet time with responses >:D
Is it too late to submit an order? Or am I just blind?
Not sure how I missed this. HHKB layout looking on point. Would like to step up if anyone backs out or if there are extras :thumb:Orders still open.

Up until this point, the company I'm currently going with has been pretty prompt in their responses, but for some reason getting this final quote seems to be taking absolutely forever.

Ah, great. How does one put in an order then? There isn't a link in the OP.
Submitted everything to a new place, now to wait again...Pm me with details
And I have some stuff to do tonight but I'll get you two sorted out with the orders
I now have all the parts I need for this build. Just waiting on the case... Hopefully this shop will be much quicker with the quote than the last. In any case I'm sure the long wait will be worth it when it finally arrives! :)
Has the money been sent yet or are we still waiting to hear back from this new place? I was wondering if I could get my money back, kinda lost interest in 60% at this point.pm'd
Otherwise putting my set up for sale. Standard plate + Acrylic Mid, paid $127 total.
Thanks hwood.
Good luck with this buy, I still think it's cool. Just more into the 75% layout now.

Could I get a PM/refund as well? Paypal address is mxraca277@gmail.com. I asked 2 weeks ago and I thought you said you were going to let someone take over my order? Next step will be a claim through paypal.

My Zealios have arrived. Can confirmed very hyped.
Another update: still talking with 3 separate places, though I'm almost surely going with one already. They've been great with quick responses (usually within 10-20 minutes) and right now are testing something out for me. So expect an interesting update Monday, possibly updates from the other two places sooner.

Got another response from one of the other two places. They had originally quoted me for 1.3mm carbon fiber. They're contacting the manufacturer for a quote on 1.5mm now. This place is using a method that prevents delamination of the carbon fiber so the switch cutouts won't be uneven and will be structurally sound. The first shop is experimenting with a method that would be able to produce it more cheaply but with a different method that would still keep the plate intact. Still waiting on a quote back from the third shop.

I assume all of these will be filed, etc. so that we won't need to worry about the horror that is carbon fiber splinters?

I don't think you will need to worry. It doesn't usually splinter like I think you are imagining. Think about it not as a piece of wood but more as a sheet of plastic, with fiber reinforcement. You don't normally encounter the fibers unless you sand, cut, or break it.

Saw your topic in Making Stuff Together earlier today--super cool stuff.
The first company is sending me a sample of something interesting we're working on. Updates on that in a few days.

Aesthetically and weight-wise it should be the same. That's all I'll say for now ;)

I'm pretty curious, what is it? Is it a numpad plate? This was actually just a little sample the guy sent me. And yea, it's looking really good so far. I'm almost definitely gonna end up using this place
Does your test project with them was positive in the end? Will it be the end-game manufacturer?

So while I won't be going with them unfortunately (found another place I liked more), I'd just like to say that Brydgeworks (and Steve who I assume is the owner) is a great place that is super helpful and responds incredibly quickly to answer all your questions (even after hours). Right now I'm just confirming the quote from the other place and then we can move forward with payment and production. And once I get all the cases in, I'll be sure to get them out the next day.

Just sent off all the technical drawings just to make sure we get all the dimensions right. They're sending me a sample of a switch cutout and screw hole just to make sure the cutting process will work.

Is this still open? I'd love to get this case, I love Carbon Fiber and this would be my first custom keyboard.I'd be willing to let you take my spot. I just had a kid so I don't think I'm going to have the time to actually build another keyboard anytime soon.

I just got an invoice where the case is $94 instead of $79 in the OP. I didn't see that communicated in the thread. Any explanation?

not sure where I talked about it but earlier in the thread I stated that there had to be a price increase since the quotes I was originally getting were incorrect
So apparently the machine needed maintenance and due to the holidays they had to wait to get parts in and fix it. So a switch cutout sample is getting sent to me today
If it ends up to not work out with the current manufacturer, i can probably manufacture it with my factory if you want.
Did you receive the sample Hwood?
Did you receive the sample Hwood?
Yep, got it today. Cuts and everything looks great. Luckily I now see that the person who drew up the design for me had the incorrect dimensions height-wise so the switch won't fit in the hole. So once I get that sorted out we'll be good to go

Hey Hwood!
The sample looks awesome! I was wondering if I could switch my plate from a normal 60% to a HHKB styled plate?
Hey, any chance I could still join this gb? Or is it over already?
Please tell me that I've not missed my chance. I need this in my life.
So right now they're just doing a better technical drawing for me. After that we'll be all set to go :thumb:
Alright, just waiting on the invoice from the company now. What we're doing to ensure we get this right is they'll get the material needed for all the cases, but will only machine 6 cases and 3 acrylic pieces (one sheet of each) just to make sure everything is right. Then once those get sent to me and I can check to make sure everything is right we'll get going with the rest of the cases.

What is the current status of the GB Hwood? Did they send the 3 pieces on the beginning of last week or was it postpone due to the problem on the CAD?
Alright thanks. You are definitely right. Would be a pity that after all that wait we'd screw something over. We all waited several months I'm sure a few more days/weeks is fine. ^^What is the current status of the GB Hwood? Did they send the 3 pieces on the beginning of last week or was it postpone due to the problem on the CAD?
Was postponed, we both just want to make sure everything is right. I sent him the right files and I'm sending him a switch so he can ensure the cutouts are completely correct.
@Hwood can i change my address or is it too late?
A beautiful carbon fibre case.

Yeah indeed!
As a matter of comparison, Hwood, does the middle piece will look like the one in the link above? I believe it is not the same material as the one we are using, is it? But in terms of color?
What size space bar does the Happy Hacking layout support?
Also are there any pictures showing the difference between the Happy layout and the normal layout?
The supported layouts for the happy case are 1, 1.5, 7, 1.5, 1 and 1.25, 1.25, 6.25, 1.25, 1.25, 1.25. There are probably more because it's the same universal bottom row that the normal case uses and the GH60 has some weird bottom row options but the two I listed were the ones I had it mind making the case. I could add the proper 6u space option if there's interest but I don't really see a point to adding a useless spacebar option.

Still time to add 6u space bar support? dem gateron PBT blank kits :p

Sorry, I think we're just gonna go with what we have now just so we can move ahead
Good lord, can't believe I missed this, this is the best looking case I have seen. Any chance of a second round?
If you send me mine first (since we're in drivable distance, lol) I promise to take gratuitous amounts of lovely pictures! ;)

See, I always think at first that it would be easy to drive somewhere to drop something off, then I remember shipping would still be half as much :p
I'm gonna be taking tons of pics anyway, don't you worry ;)

;) Any preliminary designs on the uTKL? Super interested if you can pull off a diffuser style one, since LEDs are all the rage these days ;)

Up the ante! Polycarb instead of acrylic, bottom is transparent but top is CF!
Just wonderin' where we're at since it's been a week since the last post here :)The guy has been swamped recently since they've been a man down, but I emailed him saturday, so I should get a response tomorrow. Trust me, literally any updates I have will get posted here as soon as a I have them
Do they only have like two employees or something? ;)
He sent the first three cases out today :DFantastic news!!!!!

So now that the end feels in sight, what kinds of builds are people planning? Switches, keysets, etc.I've decided on an Infinity board with Cherry MX switches. I don't have a clue on a keyset though.

I've got zealios, a gon nerd 60 and a carbon black keyset waiting for this case.
This is what it will look like to start with
- Happy config.
- Blank Gateron PBT (light grey alpha and dark grey mods) with blank CMY Mod Pack.
- B.Face PCB.
- Ergo clear alphas, linear modifiers :thumb:
We have similar taste. Only my 65g Zealios ended up in my Compact SQ and I'm still waiting for my Hack'd to be delivered (FML)!This is what it will look like to start with

Haha we pretty much have the same config. Just instead of the ergo clear I will put 65g tactile zealios in it. Well for the keyset I'll be switching between the blank gaterons, hyperfuse and hack'd by geeks.
PS: forgot to mention I have a middle piece with RGB on the PCB as well.
So, tiny problem. Turns out I wasted like $50 buying standoffs that are too long.

Those standoffs are going to be 1/4in long which will leave the case shorter than most sandwich cases. I'd recommend 3/8in standoffs because it'll leave the keycaps at a regular 3/4in height (from cap bottom to table) and 1/4in will result in usb clearance issues. Also if anyone plans on hand wiring a 1/2in standoff will be necessary because the teensy needs more clearance.
As far as screw length goes just divide the standoff length by 2, with the plate thickness they won't hit each other.
Edit: and if you aren't counter sinking the plates you'll want button head or similar

Countersunk screws look better :thumb:
Yes but if the plate isn't counter sunk they'll sit very weirdly and won't tighten correctly. It'll look like ****.

Super excited!

Alright thanks for handling the little crisis! I guess you paid with your own funds, didn't you? Do you need to split the amount? I'm not really in a good financial situation atm but I can help I'm sure!
Well I can't give you $50 but I can ship in $10 like the last time if that helps. I know that you are not rolling in money either as you are a student and this project took in your pockets. :/Spacers and screws ordered, should be here around the 22nd

Beautiful. Has it been confirmed that everything fits properly now?
And here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43865.msg2067880#msg2067880) are some quick shots of the full cases. I'll work to get some prettier shots once I get the second round of cases

Oh yeah baby! As pretty as I was expecting it to be! When you'll have the time for the prettier shots, do you mind taking some profile pictures with the middle piece as well please? So far it seems to give pretty much the same look as if it was a frosty polycarb middle piece IMO which is awesome! :D
Did they give you an ETA for the second round of cases btw?
Thanks again Hwood!
P.S: I wonder how much does it weigh as well.

Yeah, the waterjetting seems to have given it sort of a frosted look. I'm just waiting til the first set of people get their cases and confirm that everything is perfect before making the last batch.
And I totally forgot to weigh, guess either someone here can do it or I will if no one does by the time I get the next cases

The same case, but for 40% keyboards? :3 I have been wanting a case for my hypermicro
well there is, the pcb has the same mounting holes as the jd40 and other similar 40% boards i thinkbut regardless, would it be possible to do a one off during the production of your next batch or would it cost too much?My guess would be that it would cost too much for you as it would be a unique run hence unique machine/tooling configuration and so on.

well yeah, but there is a lot more offering for 60% cases in the market right now, as for 40% that is not the case (lol)
Is there a list of who's getting shipped in which batch?
Mine arrives tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pics!

I'll do a more detailed examination tomorrow morning but my initial impression is good.
Thanks Hwood for all your hard work on this! I think everyone will be happy with them.
Well, if anyone feels confident enough with CAD drawing to draw up a new top plate (maybe just add to Swills plate) have at it. Dr. Hubble obviously can't.
Honestly don't know why I trusted him enough not to at least have an acrylic proto done first.
If anyone was planning on doing some custom handwiring thing with this, please PM me
Yeah. Pads would be good.
Another thing to consider is noise since CF is loud! We need a sound clip if one of you guys can do one.
I'm a little confused. Is this still on its way to production or have more issues been found which need correcting?

When I started to assemble my case there were some issues with the design, issues in the original spacing that was done by DrHubble. We Skyped about it and agree that it is a major issue.
So now Hwood is working to get the design fixed. This is not his fault; he was relying on a well-known designer's expertise. We can all be extra encouraging to him as he's got extra work now to get this fixed, plus the issue of 6(?)x cases produced that are now useless for anything other than handwiring.

Damn that sucks hard. I thought the GB was done. Do we need to redo the whole case or just the top plate? I guess this means money has been wasted for the 6 first cases. You did good Hwood by not producing all the cases at once! Poor Hwood, I bet you were happy that it was finally coming to an end ... That's a pity you can't rely on someone to do the job properly (talking about the designer not Hwood).

Well, I haven't heard about problems from people who ordered the happy cases, so I'm not sure there's a problem there. I think if we redesign it right I'll only have to replace the top plate.
still sucks though.

Well mine (HAPPY designed) should arrived soon so I could test for you if you want. How much does a top plate cost?
Which sucks even more is that it should be neither you nor us to take the financial-toll for the redo.

The top plate I'm guessing is probably two thirds of the cost.

Would the incorrect cases that require hand wiring be available for purchase to help recoup some cost?

If you would like and if hwood agrees, you can pay him for a case, I can ship you the incorrectly cut one, and he can just ship me a corrected one when there is one available.

Yep, this is what I was planning to do. I'm not sure that I'd find six people for it, but I'd like to sell as many as I could to recoup the costs
Been crazy busy, but I took some photos of the case and posted them on Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mashby/albums/72157662996539173). I haven't built up the board yet, but I did put it together with the bolts that I have.
First Impressions
- There are some bubbles/imperfections/scratches in the epoxy on both the top and bottom plates. These might be able to be buffed out?
- There was some dirt on the inside of the bottom plate, but windex cleaned it up nicely.
- There might be a flaw in the middle layer. The gap where the USB plug is doesn't secure at the end, so it appears to flare outward. This might change once there is a board in the case, but I don't see how.
- The only bolts provided are for the four inside mount points. What are we suppose to use for the four outside corners?
I'll try and get some switches and key caps on the top plate at least to test the fit and report back when I can.

Been crazy busy, but I took some photos of the case and posted them on Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mashby/albums/72157662996539173). I haven't built up the board yet, but I did put it together with the bolts that I have.
First ImpressionsI'll try and get some switches and key caps on the top plate at least to test the fit and report back when I can.
With the middle layer, when the case is totally secured, it should hold itself in line with the case. It's not the best solution, and now that part of the board is being changed anyway, it's possible that gets revised as well. I somehow screwed up counting the screws and standoffs. I'm ordering more, and all the first round people in addition to the second rounders will have screws for all 8 holes.

Well I guess it was to be expected for a GB as ours as we are the first to make a full CF case (AFAIK). I'm looking forward to get mine. I'll try to build it without soldering and I'll report back to you afterwards.
Hey hwood,
Just wanted to say I continue to appreciate the communication. It sucks that stuff has gone wrong, but I love that things still feel like their moving.
Let me know if I can help. I have no skills in CAD or anything like that, but I wouldn't mind throwing a little extra money your way, if that would help.
Cool. If you could PM me your PayPal I can send something.Hey hwood,

Any amount helps really. I think I could sell maybe one or two of the cases to recoup that money, but I still expect to take a loss on some of the cases
P.S: A test I forgot is to put the PCB along with the switches on top and see if it has enough room for it? Is that it?
P.S: A test I forgot is to put the PCB along with the switches on top and see if it has enough room for it? Is that it?
Yeah. I though that the case would fit tight enough around the middle that it could just hold that piece in. Guess I'll look at that

I think the issue is the standoffs are a bit longer than the mid layer is thick. If they were a bit shorter, even shorter than the middle layer, I think it would be better.

Yeah, that was why I wanted to go with 1/4" instead of 1/2" originally. Could someone with a case do a quick measure just to confirm that would work (I'm almost 100% it would though)
I can only find a threadless version of the same standoffs in 1/4". It's nylon thiugh, so it should work right?

What screws are you using? If they're self-tapping, it should be fine, as nylon is pretty soft. If they aren't, I've broken machine screws trying to tap predrilled holes in nylon standoffs.

These (http://These). So that's a no then? At this point it seems like the best course of action would just be to take a tiny bit off each of these spacers

Link's busted.
Are the spacers just marginally too large? The best course of action might be to just buy a sheet of sandpaper, cut it into squares, and send a square along with each case, so people can sand down the spacers to their preference (or cut them themselves, if they have appropriate tools to do so). I can talk to some people I know and see if they have any better ideas, if you like.

Yeah, that definitely seems like the best solution. It's actually a bit nicer since you can get the standoffs to the exact height of the case. Now, we just need to wait on the revised files and we'll be good to go. This time I'll try and have an acrylic proto done for cheap at a lasering place.

I was modifying my previous post but you were quicker to answer. As I was saying, I'm a bit tired and I forgot the beginning of the conversation, sorry. I apologize but I don't really get your picture. Is the solution to have shorter standoff so the top plate squeeze the middle piece to the bottom plate?

Well, that's also going to happen. But the piece the way it is now, it's not connected all the way around. This lets the long part in the back swing out and stick out from the case. I just plan on putting a thin connection on the bottom so it won't interfere with a USB port, but will still make the piece one complete rectangle all around
Oh yeah I got it. Thanks but I guess this will be for the next cases to be produced, what happen for those already made? Will the shorter standoff be enough?

Yep, this is just to ensure again that it won't happen. But with shorter standoffs it should also be completely fixed

Ok, thanks for your explanation. By the way sorry if I had stupid questions. I just read again the previous messages and I totally misinterpreted them. I now understand what were the problems at first. :)
Hey, hwood, I finally got around to measuring. There's not enough thread length on the screws to use a 1/4" spacer.
The spacers you have can be filed/sanded/cut down no problem. However, there are some changes I would suggest:
1) Change the spacers and screws. The spacers won't fit in the holes in the corner of the acrylic piece right now anyway. Do you know what size those holes are? I don't have calipers here. I recommend some basic stainless or black oxide button head screws with a steel threaded spacer. Would probably then fit in the holes in the acrylic mid layer (steel standoffs tend to not be as thick as the plastic ones). Like some of the black oxide screws here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#socket-head-cap-screws/=3hchc6npmailiq27di and here are some threaded standoffs: http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-tubes/=3hchc6npmailiq33rc
2) Make the screw holes in the plate much smaller. They are pretty big right now. If anyone wanted to use smaller screws the head might fall through or show some of the hole if misaligned. IMHO there's not any reason for the huge holes. They force you to use larger diameter screws, which force you to use a larger standoff, which is part of the above issue.
3) I like the idea of having a hole in the spacer layer for the usb port, rather than the break as it is now. That will help hold it in place better. If you don't end up doing that, however, I do think having shorter threaded standoffs will allow the top and bottom plates to squeeze the acrylic properly and prevent slippage. Especially if you have proper threaded standoffs in the corners.

For the first two points:
I'd like to make it smaller, but as of now I've already have to replace the full set of spacers and screws once, and honestly with the money sunk into the first six cases, I'd rather just change the size of the hole to accommodate the spacer. But I guess I can add up all the costs and go from there. For the standoffs you linked, are those prices for each individual one, or for packs? Because if it's the former, that's around another $700.
For the last point:
I definitely plan on just having a hole there instead of break.

I'm sorry I'm not trying to make it difficult or more expensive. The prices are for a pack, often 25 pcs per pack.
If you tell me the existing corner hole size in the mid layer I can try to find something that would fit. If that would help you.
So where are we at now?

The size of the cases are being fixed right now. The person fixing should have time to finish it very soon, I'll be sure to update when they do.

Cool, looking forward to the update. Did more people get in touch with you regarding the handwiring case?
any updates?
Big ups to Joey Quinn for helping fix all this **** with his own free-time.
We back on track?
I wanted to get some custom screws, any changes to the screw hole size?

Have you got a response yet? It's been a week since.

LeandreN has a contact who does CF work, maybe they can do the order? I think they're in CN though, if you don't mind that.
This place is fairly popular so you probably already know about them, but just in case: https://www.bigbluesaw.com/
hwood,
There hasn't been an update from you in a few days shy of a month. When you built out the plates, the spacing appeared to be off. How goes the correction of that? Why are you not returning to the same vendor with a new drawing/DXF?
wont be getting into reasons, but if anyone wants to take over my spot let me know.
Happy Case 1 $94.00 $94.00
Acrylic Mid Piece 1 $25.00 $25.00

If OP need help with production, PM me.
We did made sandwiches style case for a friend last year, tested and worrking:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/I1Tajp5.jpg)
CF plate on Weaven and Lustro was revised since then and now even better with all minor mistake fixed and cosmetic improvements.
We can correct your mistake (if there's any) and product prototype for inspection in less than a week, our VMCs for aluminium parts are working under full load but laser cutter (for acrylic mid piece) and non-metal CNC milling machine (for plastic & cf) still have some free slot in schedule.
Happily able to help, we know it sucks to wait for prototype again and mistake and wait again, been there in past.

Im placed order on M3 hexagon binding posts, it take any M3x5mm screw (10mm spacer + 3mm for both top and bottom plate). The outer dimension of the post supposed to be 4.5mm, but I will only trust my own measurements once it arrived, will take 5-10 days.
Any updates?
Any updates?
My ordered parts came just this Monday so I still working on it, lasercut parts for test assembly will be ready this weekend & carbonfiber prototype will come along early next week :)
Sorry for taking long, my own group-buy require more work than I expect... buried in excel sheets all day.
Just did the acrylic test today. Unfortunately the acrylic mid-piece was failed when I cut it and I'm out of thick acrylic stock. Will try again tomorrow, when it done I will move to CF final product. I will try two slimmer acrylic piece 5mm instead one 10mm thick - thick acrylic led to less precise laser cut at the back.
But the top and bottom pieces border shrinking was okay, should not have any problem by now.
Spacing for largest 60pcb (same size of 60% plate) - okay
USB port having one more hex post, should be enough to keep the acrylic mid-piece in place - total 9 hex post.
There's lots of room under the pcb, should I shorten it so the case look slimmer?Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/OSLarXU.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/WoF1r8X.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/l7EzYDv.jpg)
Hopefully everything will be set in motion this week :thumb:
UPDATE: this is how the acrylic mid-piece will rest. I'm out of thick one so this is a test on slimmer 5mm acrylic. It will be flush with the hexagon post with right thickness.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/RqpMdsS.jpg)
I ordered some 10mm hex post for this project. Would order the 8mm for final product.
My previous sandwich case was screw into the acrylic type so I dont have stock for difference length binding post right now :blank:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/Zd7DXye.jpg)
Update: done with double 5mm acrylic mid-piece for final test.
Will do carbon tomorrow.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/wnky4lZ.jpg)

It would look better if I stacking 2 black acrylic spacer near the carbon and just one clear/frost in the middle.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/UH4ggS7.jpg)
also, this is my carbon, I dont know hwood's carbon is matte or gloss or any difference from mine yet.

just one more thing to clear up and the carbon fiber will be sent out. package is massive....Can you pm me the address you babe for me, please? I'm concerned you may have an old address.
could we see pics of the carbon fiber you're sending out? thanks
Anyone know the size of the screws that foggyflute used? I'd like to see about getting black or gold screws :)
Do you still ship screws with the rest Hwood or do we have to get some ourselves? Perhaps the last messages only concern those willing to have custom screws on their board.

The pics I posted earlier of the protos should give you what you need. Afraid no one will be seeing the inside of the package until it gets opened by foggyflute :p
/EDIT: It's foggyflute here, forgot to lock out bazh account on this particular browser.
Already got more than enough screw and post, case will be shipped from me assembled. It's metrix hex so best to have hex key, but you can use Torx screwdriver no problem. I bet everyone got a set of torx already, right?
Did not heard from hwood since last week. I still not got his tracking number for the carbon.
Yea sorry, I'll throw the tracking up on here when I get back. It's been difficult finding a way to get to the FedEx place since the click n ship isn't working. I'll just Uber over or something.could we see pics of the carbon fiber you're sending out? thanks

whats up hwood? it'd be nice to see a pic of the carbon fiber that's going to be shipped to Froggy. would make us all feel more comfortable knowing that the GB is making progress and showing us what our money was spent on.
don't think this is unreasonable seeing as it's been over a year

just order yourself a set from aliexpress shouldn't cost more then a few bucks and could come in handy in the future./EDIT: It's foggyflute here, forgot to lock out bazh account on this particular browser.Well I'm not sure I got one. I'll have to check at home. I don't remember ever using one to be honest. ^^

Really? Im must be out of touch then @.@
Will throw a hex key in with each set. Cost me about $0.1 each. But use a better one if you have.
Never hurt to have a set of Wiha or Wera.

so the hold up is something with fedex's click'n'ship? is there anything we can do to help?

some pictures I took earlier. Idk how long fedex takes for international stuff but the delay comes from finding time to actually go to the fedex facility since the online label wouldn't work and I didn't feel comfortable just leaving this box out in the open waiting to be picked up

Hwood im a bit concerned for your well being. Tell us truthfully how much you are into your own money for this group buy. shipping a 25 lb package being sent to vn cant be cheap (guessing in the 2-300 range). Not sure honestly. Package was 450.

I was the one who started the group buy and set the prices and delayed it a year, I'll take whatever hit I need to to get this out.

Not my fault they don't have more specific categories...

I've asked foggy to post all updates as they come here
Hi everyone,
As you may well known from Bazh's last update, foggy has felt sick, so I'm here to help and take over the handling and shipping work.
About foggy, dude have been diagnosed with autoimmune disease, which is kind of serious health problem if you don't know yet. Poor guy got so bad luck that the disease kick in at the trachea, which cause him hard to breathe and have to go to the hospital like everyday. Even Bazh has not caught up with his condition for foggy has very little communicate with everyone, even friends here in Vietnam, even I didn't know about it till Bazh's recently update and asking. So there's that, the GB was delayed for this but let's hope the guy will be okay and hopefully the doctors were wrong.
Back to the GB, I've just arrived in HCMC yesterday, after a day visiting foggy now I has had access to the office, everything is still here hopefully. I'll start packing things and quoting price for you guys immediately. There's a lot of keyboard cases here and fortunately foggy has done all the prepare work so hopefully things will go smoothly. I'll do my best to help so bare with me if it's a bit slow or something I'm not sure. It's the first time I deal with this much product at once.
Cheers,
Pearvn.

Yep. I consider my Weaven "lost" now. :(
Yep. I consider my Weaven "lost" now. :(
Come on, it is not because Foggy is quite ill at the moment that Bazh, Pearvn and co. are not trying their best to deliver everyone's goods ASAP. Yes it might take longer than expected but I think everyone will have what they paid for eventually. I'm not saying that because I already received my Lustro but because I do believe in them. They are dedicated to deliver a good service and good quality products even though they have a hard time atm due to the current situation.
But I feel you, it sucks when you have to wait a long time for something you crave for. :(
Probably safe to consider this dead considering how Weaven and Lustro stopped having updates. :(Why do you always have to be so negative. Chill out and see how this plays out.

It's good to be optimistic, but in his defense it's been playing out for 607 days. The current hope of the GB sits with someone in Asia who has come down with an illness, who has 2 other GB responsibilities that take precedence over the CF-LX, and he hasn't signed into GH for almost 2 months.

Best we can do now is contact pear_voz who is on the other side of the country--I don't think he's been handling the other GBs though. I hope foggyflute is getting better--sounds like things were pretty bad though.Just shot him a pm, though since this was still in the production phase I'm not sure how much help he can offer. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised

Came at basically the ****tiest time for this. Not that it's an excuse for trusting someone else to look for a waterjetting place for a few weeks (his line of work put him in close touch with lots of places, thought I could get a better deal for the buy, turned out to just be a lazy ******* who didn't care much to help or communicate), communication not being perfect between myself and BBS, and taking too long to ship the materials to foggy. If someone knows of any other reputable places in the area (unlikely but I'll take any suggestions), I'm all ears. It's just at a point where I obviously don't have a job right now and am out enough money that it's hard to keep shipping all of this around (already cost me $500+ just to get it to foggy, back will be around the same if not more with added packing and protection on the inside). If it's any consolation (not much I'm sure), this buy is getting done one way or the other no matter what I have to keep putting in, at this point it just isn't looking timely. It feels indescribably ****ty to have this hanging over my head at all times, especially now that there isn't much I can even do anymore.
Sorry guys.

Try bazh. He's a part of TriviumTek as well, I believe.
Any news?

:(
Basically...
Eh, problems on my end too. ****ty situation everywhere. Although luckily there's just one kink right now that'll be worked out soon:(
Basically...
Just to be clear, I am not "sad" at you. I'm just sad for the whole situation. Seems like this kind of thing happens all too often.
I'm getting sending failures when I send emails now. I sent out a fresh round of PMs to everyone I've heard connected in anyway to foggy and I've sent a message to the Facebook page (although I'm not sure how many people are actually part of this operation or if anyone checks the page these days). I'll see if I can google and come up with some phone numbers I can call (and I'll keep my vietnamese friend nearby in case I run into a language barrier lol).
Looking at the timing of all this though, I have high hopes that everything or quite a bit of the work might be already done and the actual product just needs to be shipped, which obviously makes this whole thing an easier solve.

Thanks for keeping at it sir. You should get a perseverance-ness-ly-ing award!
"Mr ---- is recovering and getting back to work right now, thank you."
so some good news here :)
thanks hwood for your continued efforts and status updates, even if the update is just "still unable to contact"
There's response starting up from "Triviumtek Supporter!" Perhaps that's the key?
Looks like Weaven is coming back to life, however requiring Originative's help to do so. I don't know if you'd want to run it yourself, hwood34, but it might be worth it to check with Triviumtek Supporter.
Any news from VN?
I think Weaven and Lustro are finally finishing up (I got my Weaven in, and it's all done!), maybe CF-LX Reincarnated?! ;)
You certainly know how to make a man moist
If anyone's interested in something like this but TKL just shoot me a PM. I won't be taking money upfront like a GB, but just seeing if I can get a head count to use up the rest of this carbon fiber

I'd possibly be interested in a TKL in this style. What kind of PCB would be compatible though?

I'd probably just use JD's universal plate style since I already have a copy and that seems compatible with quite a bit

If you could do a TKL with the A87-spec (to fit PCB's like Leeku's, or GON NerD TKL if you request for one with a flipped USB port), I'd be interested too. :)
What about a matching numberpad?
possible to change the order from 60% to TKL?

Hwood!
How's shipping going?
I haven't been this excited about a keyboard since the last time I bought a keyboard.
Niceeeeeeeee~ how will we get out tracking numbers? ;)
I sometimes wonder what it looks like in China right after they resume shipping things post-CNY... China Post being backed up for weeks and all. Probably warehouses and warehouses of Jenga. ;)
I got a bunch of stuff to do tonight but I'll try and get as many labels printed as I can to get everything out tomorrow morning with USPS pickup. Otherwise, I should be able to finish off everything after I get back from work that dayHey hwood, I had a change of address since I ordered the plates, can't remember if I told you about it or not, should I PM you my current address just in case?

Got mine in the mail today, thanks for sending these out! Only got to look at them for a minute but at a glance they looked great!
Any extras get made or maybe someone had a change of heart?
Unfortunately not, sorry. TKLs coming soon though :p
I was trying to assemble the case and notice that it doesn't quite sit flat so it wobbles when I press the top left or bottom right. Perhaps the holes for the screws/posts aren't aligned properly?
Have to figure out a way to fix this little problem...

Did you try and make sure all the screws were evenly tightened?

Yep. I tried just securing the 2 carbon fiber parts without the middle layers as well. Separately, each part does sit flat, but when I assemble it, it gets wobbly.
Are you sure all the fasteners are the same length? If the individual pieces are flat, and one corner has two plates being pulled slightly closer with a slightly shorter fastener, this is the effect I'd expect. Given this case design, I'd look for a spacer post or screw that's shorter than the rest.

Really like the look of mine, was definitely worth the wait. I've since used the PCB I was originally planning to use with this on another project, what PCBs have people found work well in this case?
Yep. Props to Hwood for gutting this out when plenty of others would have folded.
I received mine and all looks well with it. However I don't have a PCB anymore for it so I might be putting it up for sale. PM me if interested.
If I do source a board for it I will post pics here. It just might be a while since I'm pretty busy with work.
Built mine up today.
Not able to get any underglow light to shine through the frosted acrylic, but other than that everything is really nice. A few imperfections along the CF edge if you look really closely, but from arms length it looks perfect. No wobble on the board once I tighten the bolts in a symmetrical fashion. It's nice and light (as expected), but no movement on the desk when the bumpons are attached to the bottom. I'm currently trying out a flat angle, but I might change it up later on. Hoping to take this to work to get a bit more time on the board and break in the switches.
All in all a satisfying build. I gave hwood34 a fair bit of grief in this thread in the past, so I just want to say an extra thanks to him for finishing this long slog and getting the GB finalized.
Bit concerned that I've not seen mine
=[
